I own it on DVD. It has only gotten better with age. Get it. They don't make em like that anymore. Deprive remains a favorite.

Aranna wrote:

What was Robot Carnival like?

There looks to be 3 copies of the DVD at the Amazon.com site but is it worth buying? Or is this one of those anime that was better when it first aired and will look extremely dated now?

The stories in Robot Carnival carry over extremely well - they're not tied to any specific time period or cultural bucket, and they're all self-contained. You needn't know what happened in some other series somewhere to enjoy them.

If anything, this is Mecha Fantasia, if I had to "classify" it.

I'm not sure if the copies on Amazon are legit, but I'm seriously considering scarfing one up.

Deprive and Presence will forever remain two of my favorite shorts, ever.

Robot Wonderland!!!!

I remember seeing Robot Carnival at some point (Sci-Fi channel maybe?). I personally wasn't a fan of it myself, but the Presence short has been the one exception.

You mean you didn't even like "A Tale Of Two Robots: Chapter Three"?

How could you not enjoy such a superbly tremendous piece of marvelous technological engineering?! TRULY! The power of his electrically charged automaton was a sight to behold!

He even gave three seconds to pray to whatever heathen gods they held dear!

I'm recalling it mostly from my opinion at the time. Honestly I don't remember any of the shorts besides Presence, though watching that clip does make me want to re-watch it now. Perhaps I'll have to see about watching it again and possibly revise my opinion on it.

Silver Crusade

Mecha Fantasia is pretty much spot on when it comes to describing Robot Carnival. That's what I tell others when they ask me about it.

Deprive is easily one of my favorite shorts.

So is "A Tale of Two Robots Chapter 3 - Foreign Invasion".

Starlight Angel... the shojo piece appealed to my sense of romance. Still does after all these years. If I hadn't seen this, I would have never watched Sailor Moon. I love Sailor Moon.

Cloud and Nightmare are very artistic. Of all the shorts, Nightmare actually drives home the idea of Robot Carnival being like Fantasia. Very Night on Bald Mountain (my favorite piece from Fantasia, oddly enough).

Presence disturbed me when I first watched it. That hasn't changed.

Franken's Gears both saddens and cracks me up.

But my absolute favorite part of Robot Carnival? The opening. Hilarious, innocent and easily one of the most violent things you'll see. And the fanfare is just the icing on the cake (I have it on my iPod Ani-Mayhem playlist).

Thanks Blayde I had no idea I could watch Robot Carnival on you tube. You saved me a bit of money.

Well... I've made it to episode 523 of One Piece. The Straw Hats are back together and I'm digging the new looks they have. Mostly.

Franky's look is kind of off-putting for me. Other than that, the rest look pretty neat. Especially Zoro's. Very samurai.

Oh, and Greylurker, about Whitebeard... He truly was a manly SOB. Newgate took about 267 sword wounds, 152 gunshot wounds, 46 wounds from cannonballs, and got half of his face blasted off, resulting in 465 injuries in total*. And that's not counting Kizaru's lasers and Akainu's two magma blasts. And even after taking so much damage in his already weakened state,

Spoiler:
he died on his feet.

*That's an official wound count, btw.

Now, does anyone know what Dream 9 is? Someone told me it's the source of a collaboration between Toriko, One Piece, and Dragon Ball Z that was done last year to celebrate Toriko's 3 year anniversary. Now, I know that when Toriko debuted, there was an episode of One Piece that brought the two properties together, as the respective creators are good friends. But Dragon Ball Z? Can you imagine Zoro and Vegeta meeting up, then fighting it out? That would both be scary and awesome to see. Here's hoping its true...

Was Deprive the story about the robot/android that rescues the little girl? I really like that one, the one with the girl in the robot amusement part who gets dumbed, and the one with the two robots fighting in like the 1800's.

Silver Crusade

I know there's an episode where characters from Dragonball Z, Toriko and One Piece are going at each other to claim a prize of meat. I saw it on Youtube at one point. If I can find it when I get home this evening, I'll try to link it. Can't remember what it was called though.

And Whitebeard truly is an awesome character. Slightly spoilerlish.

Spoiler:
Normally I'd complain when most of the main cast are gone for so long as they were from Impel Down to Marineford. But both arcs were just great! Mr. 2 Bon Clay in Impel Down and his final scene is definitely one of my favorite scenes in the series, followed by Whitebeard when he goes up against Akainu. And of course Whitebeard's death.

As far as the looks, I agree with you on Franky. I think his went a tad overboard. I'm curious about Zoro's wounded eye, and if there's any significance to it or not. One thing I don't like, and not sure why it bothers me, is the animation for when Luffy uses Haki.

Luffy's Haki look I originally thought was like turning himself into Vulcanized rubber. Something harder and more solid. But that seems to be the look for Haki armament in general.

I'd heard that description elsewhere, and while it was nice to justify it, from what Haki is supposed to be still wasn't a fan of it. If it was simply a method he developed because of his body, I wouldn't mind so much. And then yea, they used it elsewhere and took even that idea away.

I suppose it's also an annoyance since when it was used earlier in the series it didn't have the same effect (like when Rayleigh was training Luffy).

Silver Crusade

Busoshoku Haki is supposed to be an invisible armor, but maybe that's only to those incapable of using haki. Remember, there at least 25 people capable of using it, so something had to be done to make it stand out more. The Summit War Saga had most, if not all, of those capable of using Busoshoku displaying it in some form or another.

Besides, it's only after Marineford that the darkening effect comes into play, once Luffy learns how to wield the power himself. And since Luffy can now use it, we (the viewers) needed to be better able to see it once the ability is activated.

I personally love the darkening aspect of the color of arms provides when its in use.

Silver Crusade

Okay...

I learned that Dream 9 is actually the 9:00 AM Sunday timeslot on Fuji Television. It was once held by Dragonball Z Kai and is currently filled by Toriko, which comes on before One Piece. The DBZ/Toriko/One Piece collaboration comprises episodes 590 of One Piece and 99 of Toriko. Toriko will be ending with episode 147 on April 6th and will be replaced by a returning DBZ Kai (apparently bringing the Majin Buu arc with it).

Learned a lot. Like Fairy Tail returning April 5 (new series picking up where the previous one left off) on TV Tokyo. Kind of mitigates the addition of the Buu saga to Kai (I didn't like what was done to make Gohan irrelevant after all the build up from the previous arcs plus if Toriyama had had his way, Z would have ended with Cell Games).

Oh and for all you Attack on Titan fans, here's a clip of the English dub for you. Enjoy!

I know toriyama and the publisher had issues with the series going on so long. I didn't know he wanted to end it at cell games tho... But given a lot of the things that happened, it makes a lot of sense.

Silver Crusade

That's my understanding of it, Freehold. And yeah, you can tell that the Buu saga was a bit... off.

Oh, and here's something else for you guys: Fight!

One of the shows listed in that Top 10 I hadn't even heard of before (Fate/kalied) and another I spoiled for myself (One Piece), but others were all too familiar (Attack on Titan, Fairy Tail and Kill la Kill).

If I recall, the Buu saga was supposed to be a kind of 'Gohan Inherits the title of Earth's protecter' wrap up of the series, but the story just took itself in a different direction.

I personally felt the Buu saga pushed the power threshold too far. Cell already basically obviated the whole 'Z-warrior' team outside of the Saiyans and Piccolo and even then, they really couldn't stand up to him either.

I haven't even watch that link yet and I know exactly the fight you are talking about for Fate/Kalied. Was a freaking brilliant battle

Silver Crusade

I finished off the second season of Wakfu. It was very enjoyable. The villain was sympathetic in his own way, but his personality, coupled with the plot he engaged in, made him utterly unlikeable.

I've begun watching the Punk Hazard arc in One Piece (currently on episode 595). I'm digging Trafalgar Law, especially that whole soul switch he does as part of his Devil Fruit power. Talk about some hysterical moments...

This week's episode of Kill la Kill is the final one. If you haven't been following it, please do so. I cannot recommend it enough.

Black Lagoon debuted on Toonami, replacing Soul Eater. I DVRed it and will be doing a side by side comparison of that episode with an unedited one to see what they did to it. Having watched the series before and knowing that Revy is by far the most foul-mouthed character in the show, I'm curious to see how toned down she is for Cartoon Network.

I'm looking at watching Bayonetta: Bloody Fate. Being a fan of the first video game, I'm curious as to how it ties in with the game (if at all).

Again, Cowboy Bebop. It was a long time since I watched it now... But the one scene that truly stuck with me was Ed playing against the old, demented master hacker... And when he manages to defeat the guy, rearranges the pieces to let him win.

I am not sure depressing is the right word, though. It is melancholy, with the characters stuck in limbo together. And eventually, the things that need to happen do, and the world is sort of a better place. I found it beautiful.

Finished watching Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic recently (or the season that's dubbed, anyway). Was pretty good.

The whole main cast have lost everything they cared about... and instead of finding each other and forging a new future they remain at arms length from each other.

Spoiler:
And by the end what has changed? Spike goes off to die. Faye has the whole girl out of time theme slammed in her face. Ed and Ein leave much the same as when they came and Jet just continues on. It leaves me feeling depressed by the end. Sure it is a fun ride getting there but still...

** spoiler omitted **

True, after a fashion. However...

Spoiler:
Spike got to spend time with his girl and got his revenge. Ed got a reunion with her father, and a wicked cool data dog. Faye got to tell Spike of what she felt for him, sort of. And Jet, well, he did just continue on. And the world was certainly not the same, seeing as the Bigshot presenters returned home. It was the end of an era, as I understood it. I believe the point was that their circumstances, from the beginning, were an emotional limbo.

Silver Crusade

Been kind of lost without Kill la Kill... even with One Piece, Magi and Shippuden to watch.

Need something new to watch now.

Any suggestions?

Jojo's Bizarre adventure over on Crunchyroll. They are putting up season 1 and season 2 is just starting

AWESOME!!!

Silver Crusade

Wait... season 2?

Must look into this... (disappears amidst electronic vapor)

I collected the first two DVDs from Super Techno Arts (with the Tarot cards included) in 2003, but something happened and they stopped putting more out, or so I thought. Now I'm finding out that they not only did four more volumes between then and 2005, but there's a TV series as well.

Looks like I've found something new to watch.

Thanks Greylurker!

They have the entire first half of Season 1 up, that covers all of Part 1.

Season 2 starts Part 3

Parts 1 and 3 are directly connected, Part 2 delves into the secrets of the Stone Mask but isn't 100% needed to understand part 3

...
now that I'm thinking about it I still have some Crunchy Roll guest passes if anyone wants them

A new season of Fairy Tail is on the web.

If anyone else is twiddling their thumbs as to what to watch, here's a link to all the current stuff airing this season. It's meticulously organized, if I can say so myself.

AniChart

On a side note, since the next seasons of [Log Horizon] and [Sword Art Online] are coming out in a couple of months, I've found that another MMORPG-based anime called "Blade and Soul" is doing an alright job of filling in that void, even with only one episode currently out. I would say that it isn't about players trapped in a game, but more like [Ragnarok Online] insofar as its the story of characters in the game's canon setting.

Considering that lodoss war show... That would have been hilarious back in the day... Ah the memories.

Silver Crusade

On that we're agreed, Free. As a Lodoss fan, I'll be checking it out most definitely.

Alot of what was listed doesn't interest me right now, but that doesn't mean I can't pop a look later on to see if my mind has changed. As stated before, I will be checking out JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Fairy Tail. I'll also be looking at Mushi-shi 2 and Soul Eater Not.

I have actually been looking for a Sub version of Marvel Disk Wars.

I know I should be ashamed of that but for some reason I have to check this show out.

A lot of the new stuff I've seen so far is pretty typical but entertaining enough to watch. Big ones for me are Jojo and Fairy Tail but oddly enough I'm enjoying some of the Sports stuff as well. Sports anime are strangely addictive.

WIXOSS might have potential. Surface wise it's a card game show aimed at girls. "Fight with cute card avatars to win your Wish". But there seems to be a dark side to it that looks like it could be interesting.

oh and Soul Eater NOT was a lot of fun for a first episode

Silver Crusade

Fairy Tail was awesome and the episode of JoJo that I saw was as well.

I'm catching up on One Piece (I've begun the Dressrosa Arc, which is the current story arc being shown) and both Magi and Shippuden have been very good to watch. I might check out the Marvel anime, but I'm still looking at catching Soul Eater Not and the Lodoss series.

Record of Lodoss War was awesome.
My first thought upon watching it was "This is so cool. It's just like the old Basic/Expert D&D I played back when I started gaming".

I was not particularly surprised when I learned that the writer based the series on his Japanese D&D-clone game.

Nanana's Buried treasure was fun. It's a Boy and his Ghost sort of story, to be filled with action, adventure and fun.

Have to give the main character props. Not many would sacrifice an arm just to cop a feel

Nanana's Buried Treasure, huh? Hm...

Way I heard it, it was the director's game run with the writer. And it was based off of the Japanese version of D&D, modified to run with 2d6 because it's hard to find other dice in japan.

Which, when you consider that the D10 originated in Japan, makes little sense.

However, the R. Talsorian "Gundam Senki" variant of Mekton was also modified to use 2D6 for that very reason, so as little sense as it makes, it does bear up.

Strangeness abounds!
