I am yet another lost soul wandering homeless after my regular group lost their minds and began playing 4E. As I have dignity and self-respect I chose to leave the group as I don't consider board games D&D. Long story short I work 12 hour days and have little time for gaming. I would like to find an understanding group that could guide me through learning PbP gaming. I would be willing to play any class but prefer melee. Rangers, Fighters, Clerics geared for melee etc. I'm fairly interested in a Halfling Ranger (Warslinger trait swap) with a halfling sling staff.

I just started with PbP games and here are a few bits of advice I can offer from my recent experiences:
Be patient and keep watching the boards for a new game that is starting.
When you find the right game, submit a character concept that is complete, a character builder program like HeroLab is super useful because it lets you build legal characters quickly and output the stat block in BB code format. Sounds like you already have the halfling ranger in mind, so build him up and create an alias for him so that he is ready to go when you find that game.
When you do get into a game, post everyday and try to make sure the group is never waiting for you to take an action.
Get familiar with the text formatting for these message boards and PbP games. The dice bot is really useful and provides the rolls, so no dice needed.
Good Luck!

Its probably best not to trash 4E on the Paizo boards. Critically assess it in a neutral fashion yes (although I have never actually seen this happen) or discuss the aspects of the game that you don't like in a friendly way and take the rebuttals with good humor.
Trashing 4E causes a dog pile and gets threads locked. Also there some really annoying posters who swarm on a 4E is teh suxxors post, whom I don't like because of their tone, style and the fact that they are pompous gits and the less I see of their posts the better.

Sorry, didn't mean to trash on 4e. I've read some of it, tried it once, found it too video-gamish for my tastes in a rpg. When it comes down to it, I was simply giving kudos to the player for stepping out of a game he didn't like rather than play and not enjoy himself, just for the sake of playing. It could have been any game I was talking about, just happened to be 4e. I know lots of people enjoy the game, and more power to them for doing so. It's just not MY personal cup of tea. mho only, YMMV.

4E is not to my liking either... I did not enjoy it. I have many complaints about it and how it was introduced. Unfortunately people can't have civil conversations and there are a hardcore group of haters and defenders that rush in and vomit agenda and diatribe all over the thread and if I can head those guys off at the pass all the better.

Well thanks for all the help and moral support everyone. I will follow your advice and be patient. I also know the trouble with 4E. My group and I were very close friends for 15 years. For reasons unrelated we all no longer speak but it feels like it started with our 4E arguments and then moved into everything else in our lives lol. Never move in with your friends, especially your RPG group! haha
Oops I posted as a diff alias. Still Dunn tho!
