I'm getting ready to be a new uncle again. So I may be out of touch for a couple days. :-)

I've been working on a few different versions of my monster idea.

One thing the monster template in the blog doesn't have is the italicized description, which I hope is just an oversight at this point.

Dan, I noticed that too. Unless someone wants to ask about it (which maybe one of us should do), I'm going to go without it. I figure they gave us the template for a reason.

It also doesn't include any of the post stat block formatting. So I would do as Jacob Trier suggests and follow the lead presented in the most recent products.

I think all of us "not getting the love" have a roughly equal chance to get in. It's a small sample size.

If I repeat that enough times, maybe I'll convince myself...

The FAQ actually says the twists will be announced when voting closes*, though the blog entry with the monster stat block template makes it sound like it will be Tuesday.

Come on, poetry slam monsters; you know you all want to see Custard the Cowardly Dragon made real. Who needs a bandersnatch (frumious or otherwise) when you have Custard to fight?

* I'm assuming the Round 4 twist will be to use another competitor's monster, but that's just guessing based on previous competitions, of course.

its a relief to see you all alive and well- for a while there i was afraid my [redacted] monster finished you all off, lol.

i'm with jacob (michaels)- i was under the impression that rules for round three were going up today when voting closed... its probably best for me that they didn't, my chances of making next round seem awfully slim and this'll save me from doing any real work on my monster (which i have an idea for that i was really excited about)

Twists. Oy veyzmeir.

Hmm. So other than poetry slam, what could they be?

Obviously pictures is one I think we're all considering.

I'm wondering whether they'd also consider giving us some type of bare bones description to see how we then stat it up. That would be similar to what happened when they last did monsters, in 2010, and what it sounds like the actual process is based on this thread (see Adam Daigle's comment, the third one down).

That was a tough round, Tom (though I still think last year's Round 2 was the most brutal I've seen).

In 2010, I think a lot of people in Round 4 made these kind of gonzo crowd-pleasing creatures, but then having to stat them up as a max CR6 really surprised everyone (at least that's my impression based on going back and reading them two years later).

I was actually surprised no one did the Brown Urus, since I thought that would have been one of the most able to be translated, especially at that power level. Maybe people were worried it didn't have enough "wow factor? That rat king/emperor got a lot of love.

I'm not sure where this question goes, but I did not necessarily want to start a new thread.

Are we allowed to ask questions of the judges regarding assignments during non-voting hours?

I’ve never been a freelancer, but I imaging that they are able and encouraged to communicate with their clients making sure that needs are being met.

I spent a lot of time during the last writing round wondering how the judges would interpret various aspects of the assignment rules.
But I guess that is part of what the contest is about, divining answers to unasked questions.

Liberty's Edge Contributor, RPG Superstar 2012 , Star Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 9

Perhaps if your question gives nothing away regarding your entry, you can ask. For example, the question of the introductory text came up--that might be a valid question if it weren't answered in the full stat block reveal.

You're absolutely right about keeping the lines of communication open with your client. I can tell you from my experience as a translator, it's always best to keep a running list of questions on any given project. For minor questions, you can just make a note of it and continue working (the answer might become apparent as you work). You should update your client regularly, asking for feedback and offering what you think the best solutions are for any issues.

For major questions or problems, you should always ask your client explicitly. It can save both the freelancer and the client a lot of time and effort. Never be afraid of appearing ignorant.

But that's just my take on it.

Steve Miller wrote:

Yes. And if it's something we think needs to be clarified (like, "we forgot to say your monster can't be a template"), we'll make a big post about it so all the competitors see it. And if it's something we don't think needs to be clarified (like "Do we include a Tactics section?" when the provided template doesn't have a Tactics entry), we'll transmit AWKWARD SILENCE.

Excellent! Under what method do you prefer we ask the questions? In this thread, a separate thread, private messages?
