If you were starting a new 1st level campaign, what would you start with?

Advice

I am going to be running a game on Fantasy Grounds and need advice on what the best one to start with would be. Inner sea? Don't know.....I am an old 1st ed guy.....and like that feel...but want you guys to chime up and tell me what you think the coolest way to go would be. Thanks very much

Oh...and if I started with the basic box....will that let me tie into Inner Sea or another campaign?

Rise of the Runelords. No question.

They will be doing an anniversary edition soon, but converting the early books should be easy enough to hold you over until it comes out.

So I am clear....does this take place in the Inner Sea setting? Is the inner sea basically like the old Greyhawk gazetteer? Just a setting....and the modules like Rise of rune lords take place in it?

Would this be something I could transition into from the Basic set?

Inner Sea is basically a section of Golarion, Pathfinder's home world, much the same as Grayhawk was part of Oerth. You can see maps of Golarion on the web to get a basic idea of where everything is.

While each path is set at a certain place in Golarion, many of them could be shifted to a different location, if you wish.

If you ever played Blue Box "Expert Edition", you might want to take a look at Kingmaker. It focuses on wilderness exploration, at least in the first module, and later on building a kingdom with the PCs as rulers. Even if you don't like the idea of the PCs as kingdom rulers, the first module can be a fun intro to a group of PCs based in the Brevoy area.

Also, there's an excellent wiki for pathfinder which can give you the basics of various countries and aspects of Golarion.

Cool....I think I have decided to start in the basic set...and then go from there. Can you easily transition to Core rules and to a Adventure Path from here?

That I can't answer, as I don't have the box set. I imagine the rules in the box set are the same basic rules as the Core rulebook, only condensed and (perhaps) simplified. It would certainly be in Paizo's best interest to set up the box set as an easy transition to more PF products to increase their market share. Also, having seen the preview character sheet at http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/v5748btpy8osv, it basically seems like a normal PF character sheet.

As far as setting, you could certainly transition Box Set characters to Golarion proper after a few sessions if you wish.

You could certainly do this... But, the Beginners Box is just an introduction to the Core Rulebook. The BB only uses 4 of the races and 4 of the classes (5 if you use the "Player's Pack") available within the Core Rulebook. It also uses fewer feats, fewer skills and a smaller choice of equipment than is available with the Core Rulebook...

Having said that, the Adventure Paths tend to make use of all of the rules from the Core Rulebook...

My point is, it can be done, yes, with a little modification. But you need to be aware that you would indeed need to modify the AP or be familiar with the stuff the AP uses that is not in the BB (thankfully, the PRD is available for that)...

I don't know what you mean by "Fantasy Grounds," But I wholeheartedly agree with this post. Rise of the Runelords--by far--evokes for me the feeling of First Edition. The first volume, Burnt Offerings, in particular, is all kinds of awesomeness. And it starts in Sandpoint, which I believe is also featured in the Beginner Box, right? I'm a subscriber, but RotRL has been my favorite by far.

Fantasy Grounds is an online program for hosting games.

I can't speak for Rise of the Runelords personally, but I've heard good things about it. It has an out-of-the-box feel from some of the now-cliche ideas of 3.5 Ed. I play Society and thus start with Society scenarios, but I think if I were to do a home game, it would be RotRL.

As for the BB, I would recommend starting here if they don't know Pathfinder and then allowing them to 'rebuild' their characters once they move on to the adventure path to allow for all the other classes and races. Otherwise, shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for all the info. In reading, it looks like Rise is the one to beat.....but, one of my guys has already been through it. As a second choice.....would Carrion Crown be the one to go with?

I personally really like the flavor of Ustalav. It is Pathfinder's version of Ravenloft. If that is the kind of atmosphere you and your players like, then Carrion Crown is the way to go.
