I just got a copy of the BB and LOVE the Pawns! Like everyone else, I would love to see more, especially if they were made just like the ones in the BB :) Sign me up for sets based on the Bestiaries, APG/UC/UM and various APs :)
I like this idea too. For those of us with smaller wallets the pawns are a great solution for nice miniatures without the expense. Anyone know of a way to get extra stands?

... making them wet&dry eraseable. Adding numbers for gangs and the ability to quickly mark conditions would be very useful.
Do this! It's something I'd never have thought of, and it it utterly fantastic.
Seriously though, shipping and customs fees would prevent me from subscribing to minis, but a sub to a sheet of die cut card? That I could live with :)

I created a tutorial on how to make your own do-it-yourself Beginner Box style pawns.
Here's an image of the finished product.
The two pawns in the middle are from the Beginner Box; the others are ones I made myself using Paizo images.
If you wanted to spend the time you could create a couple of hundred for all the monsters and NPCs you might encounter. I think this technique has a lot of promise. Only thing is you have to know a little about image editing (I use Gimp, but Photoshop will do) to pull this off.

Thanks for the advice Dwilimir, but uh... most of us don't want to spend that time, we'd rather spend the money :P
I'd rather spend the money too! But, for now, the pawn products are very limited. Also, I doubt Paizo will produce Pawns for every creature or NPC you could ever encounter -- this is a way to supplement a core Pawn collection even if/when they start selling pawn sets.
But...agreed...doing this (like painting minis) is not for everyone.

You know what I would like to see instead? Tokens. Built to scale. With the beautiful artwork on it. And not cardboard, I would like to see a durable plastic, perhaps even another picture of the monster or player on the back done in reds to show bleeding or dead.
Easy to transport, no set up or worrying about bending, no pieces breaking off, and no falling apart when you friend dumps beer all over the table. You can just rinse throw them in a bag and go. Like poker chips, but that are small, medium, etc.... gargantuan.
Now that is something I would like.
And for the few that want to see the back of figures... perhaps a worms eye view....

Sounds like, except for the plastic, what you want is D&D's Monster Vault.

Am loving this idea, and am working on putting together a sheet right now. Thanks so much for sharing the template and idea.

The plan in general would be to grab Bestiary images and use them?

WHere the hell can I see pictures of the pawns? There are none on the products page. I cant' find pix anywhere.
WHat the hell do they look like?
It's really lame that they don't have pictures.
There are plenty of images. This picture can be accessed from the Beginner Box page (not the same as the product page). You can also see a video there which features all of the contents of the Beginner Box including the pawns.
In addition to that the Beginner Box section of the forum features a thread full of links to reviews of the Beginner Box, most of which contain images.

Just wanted you to know that I started working on minis for Jade Regent using your idea. I'm still looking for the 3mm board and I'm waiting on my mini stands, but hopefully they'll look great.
Thanks for the suggestion.

You bet! If there's a Hobby Lobby in your area, that's where I get the 3mm foam sheets (Hobby Lobby's brand is 'Funky Foam', and you can take in a picture from my blog post to have them help you find it). It's floppy when you buy it, but it gets stiff after you glue on the paper, seems just like balsa wood or the Pawns the Beginner Box has once you're done.

So far I've only used images from Paizo's commercial paper minis line, but you should be able to use any creature or NPC image which you can see on your computer, so long as you can get a high-res screenshot or export it. Usually I can just google image search for the creature names and find a high-res picture suitable for home-made Pawns (for use only for personal campaigns).

I couldn't find the 3mm board at Hobby Lobby today. I'll check tomorrow using the product name you mentioned.
The sales folks at Hobby Lobby probably will think of it as craft foam, not a board, as it's floppy and not stiff (but will be stiff once you glue on the paper).
Here's where you can get it online:

Thanks. Picked some today and just did my test run. I'll see how they dry in the morning.

Yeah. Definitely a score as far as the cardboard pawns are concerned. It helps alleviate a problem I just know is going to pop up with PF plastic minis that are coming out. Like the D&D minis line that came before, the hard to find singles are not going to be the rare, high-level minis, it'll be the common monsters. No matter how many times I checked my FLGSs, I could never find goblins, orcs, even kobolds, as they were always snagged up as soon as they became available.
Silly how that tweaks things, isn't it?

Just would like to throw in my vote for more pawns. I am not a minis purchaser, and never will be, but pawns rock.
Ditto, I'd definintely pick up more pawns, much easier/safer/better to transport to houses for games than minis. One guy in the group keeps getting minis for the group, but geez, my dining room has too many minis that he leaves there for storage.

I have been making these for almost a year using a similar system. One trick I added to my processes, is to whenever possible use a very high DPI and photo paper.
If you are like me and bought a cheap printer because I needed to print just a hand full of stuff and stuck it in the corner, be sure to read your manual, even cheap printers can do reasonably high DPI on photo paper.

If Paizo ever made something akin to WotC's Monster Vault, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Not holding my breath though.
The product is good enough that you could buy it for Pathfinder.

That link is great, Dwilimir! I posted it again in the tutorial thread for paper minis so anyone reading it would see they had another option with paper minis.

I found your tutorial last night. Have you try printing to adhesive photo paper?
