There are not enough avatars for everyone so even though I would rather have my own it is not an issue.

Avatar overlap is unavoidable. If someone gets irritated because you snag 'their' avatar they need to do a little growing up.
I get momentarily confused sometimes. "Wait, I didn't say that!"
Mine's pretty popular so it's hard to get proprietary about it...and I'm almost positive I wasn't the first to choose it. If we could upload our own I'd probably get irritated if someone used the same one as me, mainly since I usually create my own art.

I think anyone who'd get upset at someone else using their avatar should just do without one.
That said, if we get a proper viking ship avatar, it is mine!, and I'll cut ya for it! ;)

Were the avatars custome-made (eg. personalized, uploaded, etc.), yes, it would be an annoying move, and a netiquette violation.
As they're from a default (even if rather large) selection, some overlapping - in some cases, frequent - is inevitable, so I don't really care.Now, those smurfs...

Oddly enough, it's never my own avatar that's the problem, it's other peoples. I'll be like 'why is he talking like that' and then realize it's not who I thought it was.

I used a picture of myself but Paizo took it down and replaced it with a better looking image! They said this Jubilex fella was a whole lot sexier than me. After seeing it I agreed. But eventually decided on a dragon....

Yeah, getting confused with TOZ is a bad thing. Makes me wonder why nobody picks the same avatar as Cirno, Ravingdork and Carty. :P
At least Dragonsong is cool enough not only to run with same as mine, but also makes a habit of posting right next to me to magnify confusion :D

I may not be the first or the only to make use of the Alistair Wade avatar, but I am definitely the best.
I like this avatar. Not too many other folks use it though. :)

Jeremy mostly posts in places where I don't go so he's safe. I used this avatar long before Dennis Baker showed up. He needs to find his own avatar... I'm doing some research, I know where he lives!

Well of course there must be animal doctors on the boards. Who do you think looks after the happy shiny sparkly rainbow pony when he gets unwell and grumpy, if there aren't any nice priestesses of Lamashtu around to do it? On those mornings when he's off his hay and nickering, or on those evenings when he just won't have his oats, he needs a kindly animal doctor to give him a sugar lump with some medicine in it to make him feel better and to get his spirits quickly back up.

It would be hilarious if they swapped all the avatars around on April Fools....would be super confusing....

As far as unique avatars, I very rarely encounter other posters using the same one that I do. Generally I'll get confused for a few seconds (since I'll not remember having said whatever they said) before realizing it's someone else.
It actually throws me for a bigger loop though when it's other frequent posters whose avatars are in use by other people. I remember a couple weeks ago, I thought TOZ had finally snapped and was having a debate with himself over something in a [house/]rules thread. After getting some coffee, I finally realized he was conversing with another poster who just happened to have the same avatar. XD
Either way though, no anger or jealousy, just a bit of confusion since I recognize avatars more quickly than names.
I don't see too many with my avatar, so don't know if that would bother or confuse me. I have more problems when someone changes their avatars. I do appreciate that many of the staff have unique avatars so you recognize them immediately. I don't know if any one who has been posting for a long time would really need that.
