Allia Thren |
Looking down at the shipwreck, Allia sighs audibly.
"Do you... do you think they marooned us here and then crashed into the reefs trying to get away again at night?"
She sets her backpack down, sighs again at the ship and then begins to take the things out she won't need on the ship, freeing up space and lightening the burden of the pack.
She places her bedroll and blanket near a rock that she would find again easily, holds the casing housing her flute for a moment, then lays it down on the ground as well. She doesn't want to lose it and taking it on the ship seems too dangerous.
She slings the waterskin over her shoulder, deciding to take it with her, maybe someone was still alive and in need of water, and fastens the spell component's pouch to her belt.
She ponders for a moment if she should wear her armor again. It wasn't a very good quality and she wasn't used to it. The captain had given it to her, in case they would get attacked by pirates and such, so she'd not be completely defenseless. But it constricts her movement a bit.
"What do you think... is there anything aboard that means us harm? Yes, I know you're not psycics, but you're more experienced with these situations."
Petronicus Wintrish |
"There's the Jenny." Petry said rather derogatorily. He looked somberly at the wreck of the sailing ship and the sorry condition of the single lifeboat next to it. "Everybody knows the boat is leaking, everybody knows the captain lied..." the young man sang under his breath in a disgusted tone. He straightened up after a moment. "All right, we've got two choices: swimming and climbing. Who wants to hold their breath, and who wants to make like a mountain goat and jump?" he asked everyone. "I'll swim as best I can (1 whopping skill point, 10 STR), but I do have some rope if you want to tie it to each other."
Petry looked at Kalis. "I agree with Kalis, the lifeboat is for last, but even if we swim there, we're going to have to climb up into the ship or through a hole in the side, if there's one big enough. And someone needs to take control of the lifeboat while the rest of us search the ship."
Allia Thren |
I understood that we need to make the climb and swim check to reach the lifeboat, not the ship itself. Quote GMT: "Fortunately, it is still low tide and the ship is still relatively accessible via a large rocky passage jutting out above the deck".
So I guess with a rope and maybe a single climbcheck we should get there easily.
"The lifeboat seems to be wrecked just as bad as the ship itself, why do you want to go there?"
She looks around for a place, like a rock or a root, where the rope might be fastened, so it can lower them onto the deck and points it out to the others if she finds anything. (Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23)
Petronicus Wintrish |
Petry shook his head. "The lifeboat is to get our stuff back without swimming." he told Allia. He looked at the cliff and rocks near the Jenivere. "I don't think you can swing from the cliff to the lifeboat. That's a long jump."
(Edited by the GM Todd correction below. Where's that map?)
(Edit #2: No problem in your post below, Allia. We're like the first few episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, where the actors and actresses were still feeling each other out in the roles.)
Allia Thren |
(Since Petry changed his post, to correct it according to GMT's post, mine didn't make sense anymore, so changing it, see below)
Edit: Ninja'd by GMT :)
Edit 2: GMT, I'm not quite sure I understood your sentence about the lifeboat correctly. I thought "crushed by the waves" means its broken and in pieces. Did I misunderstand that part?
Edit 3: Just to make sure, Petry, sorry about my tone in the original post, Allia is just a bit stressed out right now, that's all. Just RP.
"It doesn't seem very high. I think if we tie a rope to that rock over there we can just use it to pull our things up. That should work right? Because I think the swell is too rough to use the lifeboat safely around these rocks"
Kalis Daen'ith |
Kalis looks from one speaker to another and finally looks back at the boat. He pulls out his rope and tucks it in his belt where it can be easily accessible and walks onto the ledge and looks for a good place to jump onto.
GMT- I forgot to say I picked up my gear and armor at the beach once everyone decided to go. I drop it all onto the rocks before I go up to the ledge.
Allia Thren |
She nods slowly at Meraxes. Of course he was right, it's unlikely anything still lives on that ship.
If some of the sailors survived they would have abandoned the ship long ago.
She takes her armor and places it down on the ground to her other things that she is leaving here and follows Kalis to the ledge.
"We really should tie a rope to one of those rocks, or we'll have trouble climbing up again."
GM_Todd |
Current time - Approximately 7:30AM.
The rocks are a little slippery, but you all proceed carefully up to the ledge. From this perspective, it becomes very clear to all of you that any of the crew would have been unlikely to survive, as the lower decks have been completely destroyed where the majority of the crew slept.
Even over the waves, you hear something making a terrible racket just below the main deck. Sounds like something solid is being bashed against something else solid.
Gelik Jask and Ishirou decide to stay behind - they are completely unwilling to board the ship.
Due to the pounding of the waves on the ship, movement aboard is treated as difficult terrain.
You hear a loud scurrying as two creatures crawl onto the deck - they look identical to the eurypterids you fought on the beach, but these are slightly larger and blue in tint.
Here we go!

Party
As your party leaps onto the boat, the sea scorpions rush at you, drawn by the sound of feet hitting the deck and Dragolan's yelling. One of the scorpions attempts to move closer, but due to the awkwardness of the deck, only moves 10'. The other, however, is able to get close to Kelis and strikes out with its claws.
Claw Attack (x2)
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Both attacks miss.
Aeryn, rather than draw her weapon, moves away from the scorpions. She looks as if she's going to be sick again. Alternatively, Sasha draws her weapon and steps to fight.
And...go!
Kalis Daen'ith |
Kalis dances about a bit, avoiding the scorpion's claws, but once he sees an opening he smiles slightly. More vermin to kill! His sword is a blur as it leaves it's sheathe and he grunts as he sweeps it down into the scorpion.
ATTACK:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 (+1 BAB, +3 Str, +1 Trait, +1 MW, -1 Power Attack) DAMAGE:1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 (+4 Str, +3 Power Attack)
Meh on the roll!
Dragolan Canario |
Sorry for bringing down the average, guys.
Dragolan holds up both his hands over the party, takes a deep breath, and whistles in an odd and rhythmic pattern. Everyone feels a bit more capable. Casting bless on the party; +1 to hit and on saves vs. fear.
Petronicus Wintrish |
Petry looked dubiously at Dragolan's massive girth. I don't think there's a boulder big enough on the island for him to brace against with that rope. he thought to himself. Help...friend! said a small voice. Petry looked down at his shirt, and the hidden gemstone behind it. Oh, now you're talkative? he asked. Where were you when I was being carried like a sack of rocks to the beach? Silence was his answer.
(Bravo, GM Todd, bravo. Ask and you shall receive. Awesome picture of the boat.)
Petry will do his best to find a large boulder (where's a tree when you really need one?) and tie his 50 feet of silk rope off to it. Then he can jump down to the boat, trailing the rope after him for later.

Petry instantly regretted not having a weapon on him. "These are bigger and uglier!" he warned everyone. He scrambled to Sasha's side (G12), then realized he was empty-handed. Grinding his teeth in frustration, he looked down at his bare right hand, saying "Miner's pick!"
Call Item (1 pp; 1 hour duration; 1 standard action manifesting time; two-handed improvised weapon that deals piercing damage like a heavy pick (1D6))
Allia Thren |
"Oh no, oh no, not again! I knew I should have brought my armor."
She grabs the whip that's hanging coiled up at her belt, letting it unfold. She takes a deep breath and then swings it, as if she was doing one of her performances with it, trying to flip one of the scorpions over on its back.
Trip attack on F10: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
GM_Todd |
My fault on the armor, Kalis. I wasn't paying attention.
Retcon Claw Damage
Claw - 1d3 ⇒ 1
Take one point of damage, please.
Allia attempts to trip the sea-scorpion, but thanks to its multiple legs, it manages to remain up. It is a four-legged creature, so a successful DC is going to be 15, just for future reference.
Thanks, Petry. I wasn't as positive about this one.
Meraxes |
Do you mind using imageshack again? I can't see the maps
"If one of these things ate my scrolls I'm going to be so pissed..."
Meraxes, finding himself between a two cougar sized lobsters and rather unarmed, slinks back as far as he can away from the two. He sees the mysterious chelaxian conjure up a pick and Meraxes figures that Petry wants more of that cougar-lobster action than himself. Meraxes gestures to switch places with him.
I would very much like to 5ft step to E14 as fast as possible.
Do nothing! I don't think Meraxes knows his enchantment spells aren't limited to people. Perhaps his snake-dreams will reveal something to him or something. We'll see. If he gets a good line of sight on a lobster he may throw some acid. For now he'll laugh to himself because he has the same bloodline as Jafar.
GM_Todd |
All right. I'm going to make the move for Brin in this first round. I hope he doesn't hate me for doing it.
With a grim look on his face, Brin draws his great sword and advances towards sea scorpion. As he does so, the ship pitches and causes him to stumble, falling onto his blade and dying instantly.
Just kidding.
With a grim look on his face, Brin draws his great sword and advances towards sea scorpion. He raises his sword over his head and attempts to cleave this larger enemy in half as he did the others on the beach.
To Hit:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 REALLY?
Critical Confirmation: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 Critical confirmed
Damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (2, 6) + 4 = 12 x 2 = 24
Before the scorpion knows what is happening, it is cleaved in two.
Unbelievable.
GM_Todd |
Beginning Round 2
The remaining sea scorpion is unaware of its comrade's death. It continues to lash out at Kalis - this time with its menacing tail.
To Hit: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
The tail misses wildly.
Aeryn, rather than engage, scrambles onto the rocky passage. "I'm going to go get Gelik and Ishirou," she says.
Sasha, seeing the quarry in front of her cleaved in half, turns her attention to the other one. As she turns, she sees Petry's miner's pick. "Where in the world did that come from?!" she asks, moving to Kalis' side. She grips her rapier and attempts to slice at the creature.
To Hit: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Sasha is able to hit the vermin and creates a large gash on its back, dark black blood spewing forth.
Creature takes 6 points of damage.
Allia Thren |
Is amazed at with what ease Brin cleaved the first of the two giant crabs in half. "Maybe they're not so tough after all", she mumbles to herself.
She turns to look at the other one and notices that both Kalis and Sasha are standing in the way, making it harder to hit the beast without accidently hurting one of them.
She decides to get into a better position, and walks over the moving deck besides the redhaired woman, from where she once again tries to pull the feet out from under the monster, but once again fails horribly.
Move: To C11
Trip: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Round 02, Initiative=12, map is shipround2pcs.png
HP=7/7 points, AC=11 (touch 11, flat-footed 10), no armor, no weapons, speed=30 ft.
Fort=+1, Ref=+1, Will=2
Holding psionic focus (electricity); Power Points=4
Call Item manifested, 1 hour (Miner's Pick)
A human miner's pick appeared in Petry's hands, and he gripped it to raise it above his head. Brin, however, surprised everyone when he lunged forward and, two-handed, sliced the sea scorpion into so many little bits. Sasha turned away from the vanquished creature, and Petry was left saying "Ah, uh...", his attack foiled by the beefy fighter.
Petry decided to run around the crowd to approach the other sea scorpion from the far side. The tool in his hands crackled with sound. (Move from G12 to B15 in a counter-clockwise curve. Petry will stay 10 ft from the creature to avoid an AOO, and do a 5-foot step next turn and attack.)
GM_Todd |
Dragolan, do you mean C15 to A14?
Dragolan - wherever he is actually standing - misses the enemy with his strike.
Allia is unsuccessful in her attempt to trip the giant scorpion - missing so badly that her whip becomes entangled in the scorpion's legs, causing her to drop her whip.
Alternatively, you can fall prone, but I thought this would be preferable.
Petry, you can only move 30' with a double move, unless you want to run, which will require an acrobatics check, due to the pitching of the ship. If you want to move where you said (B15) you'll only take one AoO.
Allia Thren |
Actually, Allia, you don't drop your whip. My fault.
Oh hehe... I would have believed you :) Whew, but it was close.
about Petry's move: He still has 6 squares per move, just each move costs him 2, diagonals 3. So with double move he has 12. To F13=3, E14=6, D15=9, C15=11... ok you're right, he won't reach B15, but C15 is almost the same, can move to C14 with 5ft, or another spot with a normal move, and then attack normally. (also B14 is occupied by our cook now)
Unless you say "double move in difficult terrain is like normal move on normal terrain" then he can make it there. F13=1, E14=3, D15=4, C15=5, B15=6.
Kalis Daen'ith |
Wow you guys posted a LOT while a guy is asleep on his day off :-)
Kalis frustratedly removes the tip of his sword from the deck and dances to the side to dodge the scorpion's wild swing. Move to b12 where I can get flanking, taking the AOO if I can not 5ft step.
He bends his knees and sweeps his sword out low hoping to at least hit the scorpion's legs if not it's head.
ATTACK:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 (+1 BAB, +3 Str, +1 Trait, +1 MW, -1 Power Attack, +1 Bless, +2 Flanking) DAMAGE:1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15 (+4 Str, +3 Power Attack)
Wow, my to hit rolls suck!
GM_Todd |
Kalis misses wildly, almost severing Sasha's right-hand in the act.
Brin moves to help with the remaining sea-scorpion, but is unable to get close enough to attack.
Begin Round 3
Map Link
The scorpion, angered and bleeding, turns its attention to Sasha, the one responsible for its wound. It lashes out with its claws.
To Hit: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
To Hit: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Both attacks miss her nimble frame.
She laughs manically as she attempts to drive her rapier back into the wound of vermin.
To Hit: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
She does so successfully, severely injuring it, but not quite killing it. She continues her crazy laugh as she withdraws her sword.
Scorpion takes 6 damage.
Allia Thren |
Allia growls as she's nearly forced to drop her whip, able to pull it back just in time before the scorpion can yank it from her.
Knowing that the leather strap won't penetrate the hard shell of the crustacean, she once more concentrates her efforts on bringing it down, to make it easier for her companions to deliver the killing blow
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 Oh for crying out loud!

Difficult terrain
Dragolan spelled Bless (+1 to hit and on saves vs. fear)
Call Item manifested, 1 hour (Miner's Pick)
The pitched deck made Petry stumble as he ran around the others. Sasha and Kalis struck at the sea scorpion, the redhead doing more damage. Petry stepped up (5-foot step D14 to C14) and swung his pick over his head at the insect-like creature.
Miner's Pick attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3 points
Dragolan beat Petry to the attack with his light mace.
GM_Todd |
Almost at the exact moment as Dragolan struck, Allia tried again to trip the beast. Fortunately for her, it was already dead.
And in his haste to prove his mettle, Petry drove the pick into the vermin's skull a couple of seconds after its death. Its blood splatters on all around. Rather than appearing angry, Sasha just continues her maniacal giggling.
After the last eurypterid dies, you're able to examine exactly what remains of the ship. You move to look at the lower portion. There is no map for this, so use your imaginations.
Although the lower decks are ruined, some of the ship is accessible. Notably, the Captain's cabin's door has been smashed open, and it appears not everything has been washed away. You can also see the larder is intact from here, and a quick glance downstairs to the ruined lower deck reveals the room the Eurypterids were so keen to get into- the Supply Room.
Where to first?
Allia Thren |
Allia knows her attempt this time would have succeeded and was only foiled by Dragolan killing the thing with a heavy blow first. (yes yes, I know thats not what happened, but she has to tell herself she wasn't completely useless)
"Did anyone get hurt? No? That's good. We should check the captain's cabin first, maybe he's still alive!"
With those words she heads below deck and towards the captains room
