This is the main OOC thread for the Mercenary Company game.
All out of character discussion that isn't squad based goes in here.
Character Generation can be done however you like, there is a 25 point buy limit for abilities if you aren't rolling them and you need to post what books you are using and the page number. Hitpoints start at max. Maximum of 2 Traits to start with.
sunshadow21 |
Character yet to be named, half orc shapeshifter ranger
books: core, APG, Ultimate Magic (maybe) to try out words of power once I have a chance to thoroughly read up on them (until 4th level, the choice will only effect use of wands and scrolls, so immediate yes or no would be helpful, but not absolutely required), Orcs of Golarion, maybe Adventurer's Armory
Talbot Flynn |
Private Talbot Flynn, First Squad, reporting for duty.
This is Jaycen Keenword.
Character is built using Core/APG rules except for maybe the traits which I am not sure of but should not be a gamechanger.
Concept: Pvt. Flynn was once a the slave of a chelaxian nobleman. When he escaped his captors, he took up the life of a mercenary, seeking a sort of brotherhood with his fellow soldiers, he vowed never to be an unwilling servant again. Talbot is a crack shot with his light crossbow and his skills at disarming and crafting devious traps are a welcome boon to any squad.
Ryuko |
Private Cortland Broadcloak of Squad 3 reporting in as ordered.
This soldiers materials are the Core Rulebook, Adventurers Armory (Aldori dueling sword, Parade Armor, Masterwork backpack, possibly other items I've forgotten), Kingmaker campaign players guide (Sword Scion trait), eventually Inner Sea Primer (Aldori Mastery feat)

I'm happy with the characters so far.
I'll have the actual in game threads up once each squad has finished their individual character sheets and posted their name, squad and books used in this thread.
Each squad should then choose where they are starting their adventures, decide on the nickname of their company and suggest some possible adventures they'd like to participate in.
I'm also thinking about starting up a recruit thread where those players who aren't actually in a squad can run one shot adventures for each other or maybe just freeform? It's just an idea though and not actually set in stone.
Monkeygod |
I'll have "Blaze" up later as well.
I like the idea of the freeform for recruits as well as a place for any of us who for whatever reason need to temp bow out of the actual game.
As for IG stuff, Id like to suggest Katapesh as the start for squad 3. Adventure wise, I'll throw up some ideas tonite, hopefully.
Me'mori |
While we're all gathering, anyone have any tips or tools they use that others might not?
I've used Ye Olde Mapmaker to great effect once I have a template. And I use Paint since Photoshop is pricy.
Also, if it would speed things up for the DM, feel free to make D20 rolls for my character and I can simply add in the modifier if you don't want to. I endorse the DM making the passive rolls for my character.
Krathok |
Squad One fully assembled under Red River Running, based in Isger
Rolecall:
Abitan - Halfling Poisoner (Rogue)
Bear - Human Bear Shaman (Druid)
Declan - Human Counterspeller (Wizard)
Hakon - Halfling Hexcrafter (Magus)
Krathok - Half-Orc Guide (Ranger)
Malnivar - Human Skirmisher (Ranger)
Talbot - Halfling Scout / Sniper (Rogue)
Or in other terms we have: the Butcher, the Brewer, the Bear, the Cannibal, the Sniper, the Bookworm and the Bushwhacker.
Polish still to be applied to some crunch and fluff, but otherwise ready to report for duty.
Pvt.Fury |
Requesting transfer to squad 1 or 2, as my character concept would probably fit better there.
Squad 2 is undermanned as one of our Recruits has not gotten back to us in awhile. If Pentor approves it, welcome to the Iron Carnival. Walk on in and let your Freak flag fly!

Sad to see you leave The [insert squad 3 name here] but I understand if your character works better elsewhere. I guess that leaves us a slot if anyone is still interested in joining. Also, looking to me like we'll end up as The Sea Wolves out of the colony of Sargava. I'll get back to everyone when it's finalized on voting.
Nine Tail |
Nine Tail's build is done in this profile. I posted some background in the Squad 2 Iron Carnival's OOC page. I will finish the background and description tomorrow
Tian Barbarian Spirit Totem and Invulnerable Rager "Samurai"
Used the Core and APG for the archetypes
Hakon "Hooch Clown" |
Hakon, always reporting for duty with a smile. Jinxed Halfling Hexcrafter (Magus)* of Drayen
Any and all suggestions for a nickname are most appreciated.
*I reserve the right to rebuild the character within the class/archetype as soon as the book comes out next week (currently utilizing the most recent playtest document).

I wanted to post a query to all of the squads and our illustrious captain. I noticed one of our squadmembers had hero points listed in their stat block. That made me think, "But we're anti-heroes". Of course, that thought came from the Black Company and Malazan protagonists all being anti-heroes. These groups being the inspiration for this game made me wonder if maybe there wasn't something there for us.
Originally, in the recruitment thread, a suggestion was made to have our characters make use of teamwork feats. It seemed many people echoed that sentiment there. Since the Hero Point system includes the "Anti-hero" and simply gives them a free feat in lieu of hero points, I thought it could be a good addition so long as the feats were required to be Teamwork Feats. This keeps the anti-hero vibe and promotes teamwork and company/squad/character bonding.
Thoughts?

Mad Claw, Rich Parents as a trait is fine. Just let me know which book and pg number if possible and it's fine.
Squad 1 is fully assembled and based in Isger. I'm sorry to say but I don't have a lot of free time for the next 24 hours but I will have an in game post within 48 hours of this post for all the squads that are ready to go. It probably won't be a good post but at least it'll be something!
Yucale you are hereby transfered to Squad 2, unless there are some serious objections and you'll take The Deceivers place.
That means that Squad 3 has a spot open, which according to my list goes to Doomed Hero. I will send him/her? a PM.

Pentor, if you like we can throw up an RP post of us just pissing about around the campfire. I think us squaddies would enjoy starting to stretch our RP muscles a bit and find our character's 'voice'.

That sounds like a really good idea! Do what needs to be done, and I shall be back in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Roger that Pentor, I'll kick things off shortly.
Squad 1 is formally known as 'The Crimson Kings'
We muster under a banner of a crowned king in robes against a black background, whose mouth is agape as though moaning. His eyes have been wrenched from their sockets, leaving cavernous holes that spew forth blood running over his cheeks. His belly has been split crosswise and his hands are desperately trying to stop his entrails from spilling forth... though it looks like he is losing the battle.
RP thread is up so we can get settled afore Pentor formally gets us started later.
Darkbiter |
squad 3 campfire is up. I will finish up my character sheet later today.

*clears throat and adjusts his bandanna*
Alternately, for the "civil" folk, the banner is also a gold crown atop rose petals on a black background, under which is a twisted rope.Doomed Hero |
Mr. DM, squad 3 seems to be nautical themed. I have an idea for a dwarven alchemist/bard with a bagpipe under one arm and a mortar under the other.
The question is if you'd allow for some tweaking of the Alchemist concept to allow him to make his bombs into mortar rounds, both for stylish awesomeness and to increase their range. (added construction times/cost/whatever is fine by me)

I'm ok with a slight tweak to the Alchemist concept. Let me read up on it and I'll let you know what needs to be changed.
Currently I'm working on the in-game posts and should have them up soonish with any luck.
Pentor Lionsmane |
Also please note all characters start with Maximum Gold for their class! It's like christmas only santa isn't drunk and making passes at my mum.
To save me some time I will also be using the threads that you folks have already started to post the first in-game posts.
Also Drayen has suggested that we use the Hero Point system. I'm not fully conversant with its intricacies so I'm not sure if it's workable or not. Does anyone have any experience with the use of Hero Points?

Hero point system is detailed in the PRD under 'Advanced New Rules'. However in keeping with 'The Crimson Kings' less than savory nature - we were suggesting that we get the 'anti-hero' version. Basically just a free feat that must be a Teamwork feat.

It's like christmas only santa isn't drunk and making passes at my mum.
Among the strains of the various party conversations, you hear a sweet high pitched voice, 'Hi, Mrs. Lionsmane! I'm Pentor's friend. Have some punch. I made it myself. Mmmm, that's good, isn't it? Come see my room!' You see an innocent looking little boy whose face seems to be painted like a porcelain doll's speaking to your mum as he takes her hand and leads her down the darkened hallway.
I'm happy Santa couldn't make it, too.
