I'll just say that yes, I lived through that, and no, it was totally different.

There is a fundamental difference between, "This disease exists, it can affect everyone, and it's God's punishment for these people's immoral behavior," and, "This disease does/does not exist at all."

EDIT: OK, OK. I'll spoiler.
** spoiler omitted **

This is generally true - starting around 1985 or so.

If you go back to 1981/1982, there were definitely a few years of refusing to take it seriously. Those were years of politicians asking “why should we care about some new cancer that only affects gay people?”

I'm actually quite curious on the topic, and, being from the Bay Area, I happen to have resources: My uncle-in-law was in the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus when it hit, and my retired co-worked is on the Board of Directors of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, so I have a couple of people I can talk to directly who were profoundly impacted.

Being willing to learn. What a concept! :-O

EDIT: Apparently learning is best while nekkid. Who knew?

EDIT 2: And yeah, being from the Bay Area, *we* saw it being taken very seriously from the start, so I definitely got a skewed viewpoint.

I don't think that being completely nekkid while learning about AIDS is a good idea...

Here’s an article with some history.

Spoiler:
We have a president who scoffs at a disease that has been around for 6 months, and we rightly criticize him for his callousness and short-sightedness.

Reagan didn’t acknowledge that AIDS existed for 4 whole years.

Interesting read, thanks. It was my high school years, and I was far more worried about Reagan sending me off to war or starting a nuclear exchange with the USSR. I still have no idea why anyone considers him a "great" president. But that's just me...

From how he was discussed in my years among the right, it mainly comes down to him being the president when the "modern" Republican party really got its stride going, him being both the first and last Republican to recently win by a significantly large margin (and hence why they've been desperate to declare every R president victory since as a "landslide" even though none come close to how Reagan did), him overseeing the end of the Cold War, him being in such powerful support of the Moral Majority, and him being the one that pisses the Democrats off the most.

So... Reagan...

Yep. Going there:
He's primarily beloved because he espoused everything that I consider "wrong" about society.

Deregulation and taking us back to the "good old" 1890s when companies could kill employees and customers alike with impunity, because it wasn't the government's business to make sure that products were safe? Check.

The "War on Drugs" that saw the militarization of the police, the consequences of which we're reaping today with the George Floyd riots? Yep. Reagan.

"Greed is good" so it's OK to do a hostile takeover of a company and lay off 30,000-40,000 workers, so long as YOU make a cool $800 million? Yep. Reagan.

Deficit spending at a breakneck pace, all to spend the Soviet Union into bankruptcy? Check!

There are many, many more. But essentially he took a "business first, people last" approach that is antithetical to my beliefs, so I will always consider him a terrible president for the United States.

For the rich, he was great.
For those who would prefer a theocracy, he was great.
I will give him credit where credit is due: He managed to take down the Soviet Union, though I think Gorbachev deserves a lot more of the credit. However, if the U.S.S.R. weren't in dire financial straits thanks to their arms war with the U.S.A., would Gorbachev have ever come to power?

But the whole, pro-business, people-and-the-environment be damned approach to rule is something I cannot condone, so I didn't like him.

A young boy was walking to school when he saw a dead cat in the street. When he got to school, he told the teacher what he saw. “How do you know if that cat was really dead?” she asked the boy. “I know because I pissed in his ear.” The teacher looked horrified. “What do you mean you pissed in his ear?”
"I walked up to him and went 'Psssstt!' in his ear and he didn’t move."

I finally got my dream job at the guillotine factory. I’ll beheading there shortly.

How did vikings send each other secret messages? They used Norse code.

Something for VE and LM to look forward to:
Yesterday Impus Major finally got to spend a day with his friends, after 92 days of isolation. They spent the day wandering Albany and Berkeley, settled down in a friend's back yard, and talked about life. For hours. Then Impus major came come and sat on our front porch, watching the sun go down, for another couple of hours.

He finally came in after 6 hours of introspection, both alone and with his friends, and couldn't stop gushing about how amazing life was, how lucky he was, and, in particular, what incredible parents we were, and how grateful he was that we were such good parents.

After 19 years of feeling guilty about not paying enough attention to him, and trying to argue with him about how much time I'd not spent with him, and him arguing right back about all the time I had spent with him, it was just amazingly heartwarming.

My favorite snippet of conversation:
IM: And I love how when we argued you never once said to me, "Because I said so," or, "Because it's that way," but you were always open to talking things out with me.
NH: When have we ever argued?
IM: Fair point. If but we had argued, I'm sure you would've listened to me!

There was another bit where he went off about how I wasn't just some generic parent who didn't care, I was "Chaperone Joe" who looked out for ALL the kids, and that was just heartwarming as well.

Yeah, I slept well last night.

EDIT: For the record, the big ones were:
- Never using "Because I said so". I always had a reason for my decisions
- Actually caring about what he was doing and with whom, and explaining my concerns but letting him do things anyway
- Not being abusive. Apparently we were unique among Impus Major's friends this way. Which is pretty sad
- Spending some time with the kids. I felt horribly guilty that the *only* time I spent with them was a once-a-week game night where we played board games, I ran Pathfinder, or whatnot. Yet that's what Impus Major remembers; not the other 6 days of the week

Does anyone remember the rules to Woranball? It's been a while since I've played.
Don't feed her after (Dutch) midnight.

But, it's always after midnight. And I think she would be quite sad if we never fed her.

Besides, what's the worst that could happen? We get more Worans? That might make some people (like Freehold) very happy.

Blue is my favorite color.

Hopefully a nice deep dark blue. Not some sickly pale or light blue.

I felt horribly guilty that the *only* time I spent with them was a

This will get Vanykrye and Woran going:

Support: So, how about using some kind of ID to distinguish them?
Customer: We don't want to do that because of security concerns. What else do you have?

This this this this this. Even now as a 35-year-old adult my parents react to me disagreeing, arguing, or wanting to discuss their opinions or mandates with "stop arguing and talking back all the time and just do what you're told". It's beyind frustrating and makes it impossible to actually discuss anything of importance without it devolving into "because I said so"s.

The Wyrm is operating openly now. I thought Standing Rock was bad enough, but this is naked monstrosity.
