So this is fun:
Yesterday, WW and I met with the director of my school (my boss, but also Teensy Valeros's principal) to discuss his transition to first grade next year. She dropped a bomb on us: we can only re-enroll him if we get him on ADHD medication over the summer.
The only problem being, the kids and I were supposed to leave Dallas on June 19th, and not be back until a week before school starts.
Now I have no idea how in the world I am going to find a new pediatrician, get him on medication, and still take the children to visit my family this summer. Because, no, it doesn't make sense to get a pediatrician in Oregon, and no, not going to Oregon is not an option. And no, taking him out of the school is not an option, either.
F**k.
You should at least call up a local pediatrician in Oregon. I know that our pediatrician here deals with a lot of out-of-country visitors whose kids get sick, and they work with the families to try to get them insurance coverage and the medication they need.
So in all likelihood (considering where I know you'll be) you can find a pediatrician in the large nearby town who'll be willing to do a one-off prescription for you with the caveat that all refills will be from your regular pediatrician.

I constantly quote Confucius when it comes to his thoughts on manners etc. One of my favorite Chinese philosophers. to be fair I don't know many more Theirs Lao tzu but I found his philosophy quite bizarre sometimes.TIL that Confucius lived during the Warring States period of China, where there were constant wars, tyrants pressed peasants into service, and things were just generally s~#!ty. Confucius sought to fix society by using the family as a blueprint for government: Daddy state owes his children citizens care and protection, and they in turn owe him obedience and loyalty.
Yes, Confucius was the original family-values politician.
Interesting. The author of the religion book I recently read (God is Not One) straight up mentions that Confucius is his favorite thinker. I don't know any quotes or the particulars of Confucius' rituals, just that he considered ritual to be part of personal cultivation and social harmony. From what I learned yesterday in Netlix's documentary Genius of the Ancient World, which devotes an episode each to Buddha, Socrates, and Confucius, it sounds like I would find Confucius' attention to ritual and manners stifling; but I do appreciate that it was part of his mission to make society and people more humane.
It's funny about Lao Tzu and Confucius, they founded basically diametrically opposing religions/philosophies. Confucionism is all about manners, ritual, obligation, and social responsibility; whereas Daosim is all about spontaneity, nature, rejecting social norms, and personal fulfillment.

I don't like suggesting this, but you may have to get the pediatrician in Oregon, as if you're moving to the area, then pretend it's a surprise when you "have to move back". I'm sure your insurance will charge you out-of-network...assuming that they cover it at all...but it sounds to me like your only realistic option.So this is fun:

I'm sorry. I really just assumed that your job would include health insurance. But at least that removes a layer of complication for this particular situation, I guess.

Haha. Insurance. Yeah, that's cute.We have an HRA. Medical expenses for myself, WW and the kids are covered up to $500/month (a skosh more, but I don't remember the exact figure), but we have to pay in advance and get reimbursed. And, when that was impossible because things are so tight, my boss even fronted the money for his testing on the school credit card , I submitted the receipt to the HRA agency, and when they *eventually* reimburse me via direct deposit, the school does a payroll deduction. (It's supposed to be no later than the 7th day of the month following claim submission, but it never is.)
So, it sucks, but it's better than nothing.

Their might be a taking it to far approach but for the most part I agree with his thoughts. Manners for example its amazing how much of a difference an experience can seem when say someone bumps into you and keeps walking or bumps into you and apologizes. Little things like that can go a long way to improving society.

Romeo and Juliet Is a terrible story really. It appeals to teens with their hormones running rampant but any reasonable adult knows its ridiculous. Also I think you may have misinterpreted the stage directions...

I don't know what Texas is like, but in California I'd lawyer up. The one time they tried to put Impus Major on ADHD medication he immediately became suicidal and the medicine went straight in the trash. I didn't know it was legal to require anyone to take mind-affecting drugs, much less children.
this too is a known possible side effect. I am glad you saw and moved immediately. However, do not throw out adhd meds- someone may need them, and its rarely the guy going through your trash looking for things to sell.
At game on Friday, I scored a very petty victory over the GM. She had been using Vampiric Touch on us, and had read the effect out loud to make sure she was doing it right. So she hits me with it, says "You take 26 damage, and I heal 26." I laughed loudly and said "HA HA HA!! You only gain 25 hit points, because I'm f$@!in' dead!" A very petty victory indeed.
No real worry though. The cleric hit me with a Breath of Life and brought me right back.

So, this was a bit of a revelation to me, and is a really good example of how not to write an AP:
We're just entering Book 4 of Strange Aeons. The party is 10th level. And they have reached the very first location with a base value of over 2,000 gold pieces.
GothBard put it really well: It's one thing to say, "OK, this is a low-magic game, so the maximum item value is xxx and you're only getting 20% WBL" or some such. It's another thing entirely to say, "Well, this is a full-level AP and you're getting full WBL, but you won't be allowed to shop at all for levels 7-10."
Part of the fun of building a character in any game is the shopping. My gnome in Shiro's game has 120 pounds of random crap in her Handy Haversack. And yes, it's mostly crap. Vomit capsules. Foaming powder. A Feather Token: Tree in case she ever happens to need a tree...
...but buying all that stuff is fun.Precluding PCs from shopping at all is not fun...
EDIT: And people say, "Well, you just had a 90-day boat journey. Why weren't your casters crafting?"
To which the easy response is, "Er, they started that boat ride at 7th level with less than 1000 gold pieces in cash each. Exactly how were they supposed to craft with no money and nowhere to purchase materials?"

And, honestly, they're right about his ability to focus on his work. He's really smart, but he can't keep his attention on anything other than reading a book for more than a couple of minutes. He says it "hurts, like really hurts in my brain" when he tries, or if he has to be silent. I tell him six times to find his socks and shoes and put them by the door. He keeps doing totally random other things. I get mad. He starts crying and says, "Mama, I'm trying to, seriously, but my brain won't let me."
My biggest concern is not that they want him to do it, or the cost of doing it, it's that the timeline for getting it done feels rushed to me... for something this important, I really want to take the time to find a good doctor who will be careful with his dosage and teach me how to monitor him and what to look for, both good and bad, so I can be a good advocate for him. I mean, I'm pretty darned granola, and of course I'm worried about the potential side effects (because, yes, paranoia and depression are really damned scary), but I honestly don't believe he will be able to even get through grade school without an intervention to help him regulate.
I'm basically looking at it like vaccines at this point. Yes, there are some children who have had extreme adverse reactions. But that's not a reason to not get an MMR shot, because the potential benefit vastly outweighs the risk. And, a trial period on this medication will not put him in any immediate danger.

I once auditioned for Romeo and Juliet. I was thrown out and banned from the theater. I don't know why. The script clearly said "Enter Juliet from behind".
my directorial debut was a failure for just such a reason.

a very healthy and powerful attitude. Still, be careful. Most kids really shouldn't be on psychotropic meds, because the industry doesn't test meds for them.

Paizo really dropped the ball with respect to ending the magic mart. It is something I try to address in my games, but I have yet to find a one size fits all approach.
I've never been able to relate to the urge to avoid the so-called magic mart. (As in, "Okay you're in the town bazaar, here're your options and general restrictions, have at it.") D&D expects PCs to have a certain amount and type of magical bling, the game gets mighty wonky if they don't, so giving them relatively free reign in purchasing via an abstracted shopping process just makes sense. Unless of course the DM drops basically what they're expected to have as loot, that's cool too.

You're totally right, but it's hard to put my finger on why. Everyone wants basic consideration from others, so on a personal level being polite makes people feel valued. I guess there's also an element of "I'm living in a cohesive society, not just a large concentration of isolated people." How does Confucius justify manners?
(I suppose I could find a translation of the Analects, but I'd rather have a conversation about this. Pun intended. ;) )
