In the ICv2 article out this morning, Pathfinder is now tied with Dungeons and Dragons 4E as the best selling Role Playing Game on the market for the past quarter. Allow me to be the first to extend my congratulations to the entire Paizo team! You guys have earned it. *Salute*
Awesome, congrats guys!

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:Wizards may be going through a transition, but who says that the new red box/Essentials is a failure?I don't think anyone said that in this thread. But the reported number is 3rd quarter sales, and red box/Essentials didn't come out until September/October. If you look at their product schedule for the previous 2-3 months, it was pretty thin (some Dark Sun stuff, Psionic Power, and some modules).
Indeed. By contrast, Paizo doesn't have much that would drive a new influx of buyers in the next couple of months, so I can't imagine anything but a strong Q4 performance from D&D and Pathfinder dropping back into a solid second place.
If that turns out to not be true, though, it will mean something quite signficant for the state of the industry.
By the by, these are just sales numbers for people buying through their FLGS. Mainstream sales outlets like Amazon or Barnes & Noble aren't represented in those figures.

Gilfalas wrote:What are you counting? I'm getting Player's Guide, Advanced Player's Guide, Gamemaster's Guide, Bestiary, then there is a dozen "Pathfinder Companion" books, several "Pathfinder Chronicles" books. And are they counting the adventure paths?
That alone is a huge indicator that Paizo is actually OUTSELLING 4E. 4E does have a ton of books out and PFRPG has only the 4.
Well in my original statement, I was counting the only books that would be considered in the "main" line. So Core, GMG, Bestiary, and APG for PF. 4e has PHB 1, PHB 2, PHB 3, MM 1, MM 2, MM 3, DMG 1, DMG 2, Martial Power 1, Martial Power 2, Arcane Power, Divine Power, Primal Power, and Psionic Power. That's 4 to 14.
But if you also include the Companion and Chronicles books, well then you need to include ALL of the other books in the 4e line that aren't those that I listed or adventures. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure that 4e would still outnumber PF. And if you include the Adventure Paths, you are effectively saying anything with the Pathfinder name on it, so you gotta include everything with the Dungeons and Dragons name on it published during 4e., minus standalone modules, if 4e has any (H1/H2/H3/P1/P2/P3/E1/E2/E3 are all "paths", so you count them). At that point, you might be roughly equal for the number of things published.

Woo HOOO!
This is great news folks. We are really proud of our game, but could not do it without the fans, GMs, players, playtesters, and other enthusiasts..
Lets all just enjoy the moment. No need to get into arguments in this thread about what this means to other companies.
Good times..

And Hasbro, in a raging fit of jealousy will try to buy Paizo, replace the "Pathfinder" name, fire all their talent, and put Wayne Reynolds rendered Mr. Potatoheads in place of the golem.
Of course, that's just the conspiracy theorist in me speaking.
Congrats Paizo Staff. Keep doing what you're doing. :)

Even if this analysis is correct, I'd still say that it was something significant moving from #2 to tied for #1, given how it seemed to be widely proposed that the gap between 1 and 2 was very significant.
Exactly. It may be that D&D reclaims the top spot next month and this came about at least in part because of the relatively light 4E release schedule leading up to the release of Essentials.
But even if this turns out to be a short term thing, the idea that the Pathfinder line could be matching Dungeons and Dragons barely a year after release? That's an incredible achievement. I doubt that even the most optimistic within Paizo expected things to go quite this well.

I don't want to analyse the data and make any conclusions
I simply use this opportunity to sayCongratulations Paizo
and thank you for the wonderful products.and with Paizo I mean the whole staff, not just the "famous" people that everyone thinks of.
Yeah. Everybody forgets that Cosmo person ...

Not to rain on the parade, but do we have validation that Pathfinder and D&D are indeed tied for sales in Q32010? That might be a simple error in writing data to the table on that website. . .
It's not conclusive proof of a non-typo, but in this link the comment about RPG's is that Pathfinder and D&D are neck and neck.

Good catch! I think that's enough evidence (:

Congrats Paizo!
I also have to say congrats Evil Hat! The fact that Dresden Files made the list is pretty amazing. Of course, it also means White Wolf really has declined a surprising amount. FFG's 40k RPG is certainly holding fairly steady. Go Deathwatch!

Where I live, there are five stores which have PFS games. One has as many as five tables running at the same time and is running Year of the Shadow Lodge on Satuday in a week and a half. At the recent con we had about 45% PFS, 45% LFR and 10% percent everything else.
Needless to say, I think your experience and mine show why there is a great deal of discrepancy in the perceptions of what is happening out there.
To Pathfinder, I say congrats. Drive 4e into the lower levels of the Abyss.

Those are not events. Judging by what I looked up and the fact some one is running PFS out of his apartment, I am assuming ANYONE can start up a society game - which I presume is on par with LFR or LG or what not. That is not an "event." It's just a game with official rules lawyering.

Congrats to Paizo. My brother just said less than a month ago that he predicts Paizo rising to the #1 spot in the RPG industry, just because of the sheer quality of your products and the enthusiasm of both the employees and the fans.
I'm not going to read into this too much, but it does seem to indicate, if nothing else, that the gap between 4e and Pathfinder is not as wide as some would suggest. Here's hoping my brothers' prediction comes true!

Which is technically the same as worldwide D&D day, except for LFR and PFS you make your character beforehand or run a pre-made as you see fit, while woldwide D&D day you have to run what wizards gives you. Yes, in Worldwide D&D day you may get to keep the mini for the character you played (depending on the boxes - some years you could some you couldn't) but that's only because WotC makes the minis and can sell/give them away at a loss to write it off *shrug*

Well earned. Paizo constantly delivers quality products using the best selling rules of all time. Here's to the future! Can't wait to continue purchasing pathfinder!
PS-I have never bought 4th edition d&d. My group just didn't want to switch rules systems. We are glad we made that choice.
Keep up the excellent work!

This is true, and it's not necessarily even a scientific study of that. Also not factored in here are direct sales, such as paizo.com sales (including subscriptions and PDF sales), or Wizards' D&D Insider subscriptions. Foreign translation sales and most licensed products are not going to be counted in here either.
But it's still probably the best measuring stick the industry has right now.

Not to rain on anyone's parade (this is what, the fourth time that phrase is used here? :p), but the way they judged this isn't exactly "scientific" ;p
It was literally them going to a handful of stores and going "So uh, what RPGs are your best sellers?" and attempting to extrapolate widespread conclusions based on the responses.

Who said it was scientific? It obviously is an indicator. The practical matters of life depend on indicators a lot more than they do on scientific data.

Wait...isn't science based on taking data points and extrapolating widespread conclusions? ;-)

I picked up a 21 day aged ribeye from a local specialty butcher. It has been suggested that I go with a nice Zinfandel, but I am still mulling it over. I need something that is going to saute well with a mushroom and shallot blend.

Congratulations, guys.
I mean, my bias has always been obvious and expressed without restraint (Pathfinder all the way!)
But, it's still good to see stuff like this.
I'm particularly impressed by the fact that you don't have as many core books and the fact that you are going up against a product with a widely recognized name. It's a bit like a facial tissue company that was created a few years ago matching Kleenex in sales.
What I'd be most interested in finding out is how this translates to net profits (ie. what are your costs of production vs. theirs)? Yeah, I realize I'm probably not going to find out.
