Haladir, (hope I'm not bugging JJ)

From my perspective, not really. You're basically talking Charisma scores and self-promotion (diplomacy and bluff checks). van Gogh had a huge Int mod and no Cha to speak of, and didn't invest much in ranks. Warhol was a famous schmoozer.

The house painter is a professional painter, so profession (painter). He just does it as a living. Paint the wall, paint the cart, schlock the cabinets, etc. He's more like a scribe using a big brush.

The Artist is a Craft (painter) who makes specific works of art, just like a jeweler does with gems. Landscapes, portraits, illustrations, etc. His analogues are sculptors, woodcarvers, jewelers, and so forth. It' sounds funny to call them a Craftsman, but that's what they are doing...making specific items, although its art instead of tools or finished products.

Should there be a charisma factor in the price? Yeah. There used to be a feat in 3.5 that made your items 'artistic' and upped the sale price for them, but I don't remember what it was. Maybe JJ knows some rules for being 'avant-garde' in your crafting.

Yah... please take discussions to their own threads. Makes it hard to sift through questions when there's large posts with no questions.

Actually, the Craft might be the portrait painter, and profession might be the professional. I'm just used to putting blue collar work into Craft and white collar into Profession. But Artist painters create objects, and professionals cover and recover existing items.

Could be either interpretation I guess.

==Aelryinth

This is absolutely how I would divide it.

I always made the distinction between Craft (painting) and Profession (artist) to be: Craft is the skill you use to create a particular work. Profession is how well you are at getting clients/patrons, managing you studio and/or apprentices, buying paint & materials, and (most importantly) selling your work. My example is: Vincent Van Gogh Had a very high Craft (painting) skill and a low Profession (artist) skill. Andy Warhol had an OK Craft (painting) skill and a very high Profession (artist) skill.

Am I in the right ballpark there?

Craft is the skill that makes things you can touch and use.

Profession is the skill that just makes money.

I've always explained it in terms of economics: Craft skills create goods while Profession skills describe services.

Anyway, its almost Christmas time JJ, and people are harassing me for my Christmas wishlist. What should I do?! What should I ask for?!

What makes them lawful is their behavior.

Over-analysis of alignments only leads to insanity too, by the way.

I've always took their Lawful to mean Discipline, which ya kinda need when you worship a God of Pain and Suffering.

I did. I traveled about 100 feet north to hang out at Wes's place. Does that count?

You should ask them for a pet tarantula.

Hey James, hope you're doing well!

Question:

The final revelation for oracles with the Heavens mystery includes the following line, "Should you die, you are reborn 3 days later in the form of a star child, who matures over the course of 7 days (treat as the reincarnate spell)."

What is a star child and does it have any effect on the ability or does it just work exactly like reincarnate? Thanks for your time :)

Hey James are there plans for expanding on the outer sea region of Golarion? Like beyond Tian Xia. I am curious about the rest of the planet, what other cultures and races and civilizations exist?

Thank you very much for your time and response.

I'm not sure Metterak is official Golarion stuff. Try King Daralathyxl, from Dragons Revisited. Prior to the publication of Bestiary 4, he was the second most powerful creature in the setting, second only to the gold dragon Astarathian.

Hello James!

Wanted some clarification on Wrath of the Righteous. The party has recently just started to besiege a certain citadel in Book 2. It mentions certain NPCs accompany them along with this (and they have befriended another NPC within). Do the NPCs that come along (and they befriend inside) count against their experience?

The first book explicitely says early on they don't but I've seen no such caveat in the second book. I just want to make sure I'm not skimping them experience they'll need and wanted to know what the intention was.

Liberty's Edge

Curse of the Crimson Throne question:

Spoiler:
If you were to "officially" rebuild the Red Mantis Assassins from book 3, would you keep their Rog3/Ftr2 base, or rebuild them from the ground up?

So, as far as Golarion is concerned, is Psychic magic a different source of magic (the difference between Arcane and Divine) or just a different style of magic (the difference between a Wizard and a Sorcerer)?

What exactly a "star child" is is left to the player and the GM. I've always envisioned it as something like an adult version of the thing from the end of 2001. In any event, it's pretty much just flavor text with no rules attached to it.

That sounds like a great end-of-the-campaign challenge for a group of 4 20th level characters.

There are always plans to do this. We expanded on Iobaria a little more in Reign of Winter, for example. We'll continue to explore other continents now and then as Adventure Paths and other developments make sense for it.

Doesn't really matter if he's official or not. The question was, at its core, "what level should my group be to face a CR 24 encounter?"

1) We haven't said in print what Lord Varklops is... so he could be anything.

2) Of course there's a chance. Biolante is awesome, after all.

3) I just playtested the swashbuckler yesterday and provided a lot of feedback to the team, and have a meeting with them later in the afternoon to talk more about it. But that'll probably be about it as far as my direct work on the book. I might be recruited to help edit some of it later, but I'm not going to be involved in the direct design or development at all.

4) I'm intrigued by the investigator, the shaman, and the brawler.

5) Probably not. Should I?

Nope. NPCs should not count against experience. The point of having NPCs along is to help the PCs and to build the story. The PCs shouldn't feel "punished" by having friendly NPCs along... and if the GM finds that having the NPCs along makes the fights too easy, those NPCs should find other things to do.

The main intent of the NPCs is to give the PCs NPC friends, and to act sort of as "insurance" against the unpredictable nature of how any one group will interact with the difficulty of an adventure.

Will you increase the differences between Arcane and Divine magic in future products. Because divine magic just seems to copy Arcane magic in my opinion

Magic is magic. Whether or not it's "arcane" or "divine" only really says what sort of class uses it; there's not really much of a distinction between the two in exactly how it interacts with the world. By design, since we do not want two fundamentally different magic systems.

I am just about to begin Sword of Valor and I had a question on the NPCs from book 1. Each of my NPCs were atleast friendly, several are Helpful. Would you suggest that the NPCs seek out the PCs and volunteer or would you require the PCs to ask the NPCs to come with them?

Also I have a question about how you would handle one of the encounters:

Spoiler:
My party currently has a Paladin, Ranger, Barbarian and Inquisitor, and I'm concerned with their ability to fight the swarms on their way to Drezen. I'm not sure if I should change the encounter or do something else since the immunity to weapon damage is going to be a significant impediment to this group

Thanks

I think Frozen is a great movie but I just remembered you don't like singing so I am not sure you would like it. Though I really liked how the snow queen's abilities worked and what she could do with them. I wish the sorcerer class worked more like that.

1)Other then the demon lords, old ones, and kaiju, what monsters did you design in the Bestiary 4?

2)Will the Advanced Class Guide book have new options for all the classes or just the 10 new ones?

3)Is the dimension of time still cannon in pathfinder since the great beyond book is 3.5? What about the other demi-planes mention in the great beyond book such as the fleshwarren, the lost, freehold of the rouge angel, crypt of the dying sun, prison of the laughing fiend, mnemovore, the machine armory, or the circle between?

4)Do you know who came up with those demi-planes?

5)Are there any musicals you can watch?

I would have the NPCs seek the PCs out and volunteer if the PCs don't ask them before hand to accompany them. UNLESS I got the idea that the players hated having the NPCs along in the previous adventure, in which case I would not force them on the party, as much as I think having NPCs helps the story.

Spoiler:
If you're concerned, have a helpful NPC, even Galfrey, tell the PCs point out that, "Listen... the boss demon of the Worldwound is, among other things, the lord of infestations. That means that I can GUARANTEE you'll encounter swarms, and from what I've heard of your fighting style, you are not ready for swarms. I can spare a half dozen vials of alchemist's fire and a half dozen vials of acid, but you should look into getting some more gear or having Aravashnial prepare some area-effect spells to deal with the inevitability of encountering swarms in the land ruled by the Lord of Swarms."

3) The Dimension of Time is still out there, as are the other ones, but for now we're not doing much with them.

4) Todd Stewart came up with the bulk of them. The Dimension of Time's been in the game for decades though.

5) Not really. I suppose animated movies like Aladdin or Nightmare Before Christmas are bearable.

As long as their faith is strong, they'd welcome them in most cases. Note that what a deity welcomes is not always 100% in sync with what the deity's worshipers welcome.

It just means that was the off-the-cuff spur-of-the-moment don't-read-anything-into-it reply I had. If I had plans to make him into a demigod, I would refresh my memory as to what we've actually said about him and the traditions we started.
