Bruno Mares wrote:The upcoming Advanced Class Guide is a very good idea, but some class is just non-sense.
Brawler, swashbuckler and warpriest already exist like archetypes, and bloodrager and skald could just be archetypes for bard.
But why the hell create hunter and slayer?!? They already exist, named as ranger and rogue!
I think I just didn't understand the real intention of the book, can you explain to me why the redesign of these classes that already exist?
I really think you could create something better classes with new concepts than that, like the arcanist is being created.
Using "why the hell" in a question raises flags, first off. Please try not to ask your questions in an antagonistic way. It just makes it look like you're looking for an internet argument and not honestly asking questions.
Obviously we think that all of the classes in the book deserve their own full base classes.
I don't see a difference between the following:
1) You can create a swashbuckler using an archetype or a base class.
2) You can create a "fire mage" using a sorcerer or a wizard.
The POINT of this book is to grant more options, and that includes more options to build some types of characters.
I am not raising flags, just doing my questions. Sorry if looked offensive or antagonistic. Really, there is no difference between a base class or an archetype, but today, the game has too many options (which is very good), creating many loose ends in the rules, due to lack of standardization and new models of rules presented in recent books. Excessive exceptions in the rules creates confusion on most players, which often causes discouragement to use new books. Given this, is there any future idea about a revised version of the rules, PRPG 2nd edition or something similar, standardizing the rules of the books from 2008 to the present day books on a single issue?

Bruno Mares wrote:As you say, they all still can be archetypes (old or new). And I ask James because in the playtest threads, the discussion is to improve the classes, not question their need or reason for existence. Still want to understand the not clear intention and reasoning of why create new classes when they could be brand-new cool archetypes (except the arcanist, shaman and maybe investigator).Well... I'm not the right one to ask, frankly, since I'm not all that involved in the playtest.
But I'll try to dip a little deeper...
Taking the swashbuckler as an example... it's archetype is INCREDIBLY weak and kinda pointless. One of its big "draws" is that it lets a rogue gain a weapon proficiency in a martial weapon, but most swashbucklers are going to want to use the rapier which is a weapon rogues can already use, so that ability is kinda wasted on most rogues (and worse, replaces one that they might want).
Furthermore, a swashbuckler rogue means that you don't have a full BAB, which a swashbuckler kinda needs.
And making a swashbuckler fighter is a bit nonsensical, since that fighting style (one weapon and nothing/buckler in the off hand) is the weakest option for fighters. And the fact that the higher level you get, the more you're "wasting" class features if you don't wear heavy armor starts to suck.
So, the swashbuckler as a base class DOES fit an underserved niche—the role of the lightly armored, graceful, one-weapon combatant who uses Charisma as a battle resource.
Whether or not you agree with our choices... we made those choices after a LOT of discusion and thought, and came to the conclusion that each of them services a niche that an archetype alone simply can't. I'll leave it to Jason to "defend" the other choices (not that I feel they need defending) since beyond the swashbuckler (which I've been trying to get us to do a base class for ever since Advanced Player's Guide was being concepted above 5 years ago), I don't really have a LOT of insight or knowledge...
Improve the brawler, swashbuckler, warpriest and other themes that already exist as an archetype to a base class is ok, but I can't understand how and where the theme of hunter and slayer is different from the theme of ranger and rogue, respectively. The questioning about these two classes is about its theme and purpose, since already existe classes that serve perfectly to these themes.

I'm curious if it's referenced anywhere how Asmodeus regards the Worldwound. I was thinking of going with a Witch for the Wrath of the Righteous AP, and thought it might be interesting to have a pact with Asmodeus, on the assumption that he probably wouldn't be terribly happy with Demons rampaging through his potential worshippers. I know that Golarion Devils aren't typically portrayed as caring about Demons, but he has to be somewhat concerned about the destruction of some potentially useful souls/worshippers, at least?
Not directly... but for the most part, Cheliax's house of Thrune kind of actually appreciates the Worldwound since it drew so much attention away from their nation. In a way, the fact that all the Iomedans and other crusaders turned north was what really helped the House of Thrune assume power in Cheliax and allowed the rise of the church of Asmodeus along side. So in a way, Asmodeus's faith kind of owe the Worldwound a favor.
As for how Asmodeus regards the Worldwound? Equal amounts of concern and nervous fear and amusement and delight, probably.

How would you adapt a troop into an army?
I'm thinking a troop that covers a much larger area. A massive mob of mooks, meant to be fought by Mythic characters. (that was going to be more alliterative, but I didn't know any synonyms for "fight" and "character" that started with M) Like Ninety-Nine Nights, where evidently you can have upwards of 1000 enemies trying to mob your face in.
I wouldn't.
Once you're talking armies, you're talking true mass combat, and at that point I'd build an entire book's worth of rules to handle it if I didn't want to use the simpler mass combat rules from Ultimate Campaign.

Yes. Because Barry White is anachronistic.

What's the difference between legal reasons and licensing reasons?

Arshea and Calistria don't get along well at all. Their personalities are way too different. Arshea basically finds Calistria to be too mean-spirited, while Calistria finds Arshea to be too tentative with pushing her limits and to distracted by worrying about being nice.
1. Would their respective worshippers feel the same way about each other?
2. Is this what Merisiel meant when she said Arshea is "too safe?"
3. What limits does Calistria feel Arshea should be pushing?
4. Besides non-consentual sex, what does Arshea consider taboo?
5. What other gods and demigods would Arshea feel strongly about?

As with massive swarms, I believe the standard recommendation is just to use a lot of adjacent troops instead of trying to stat up one giant troop.

Mr. James Jacobs,
How do I make the/some forums more welcoming and inviting? I've already got the "Be polite myself part" down and I already don't mention social/political issues because that just asking for trouble.
That's a good start. It's also a good idea to avoid getting caught up in flame wars or edition wars. But just be friendly.

James, have you ever heard of an edition flame war that sees which edition of the books burn the best?
For fastest burners, I would have to place my money on the D&D basic, as there was less ink per page. Unless ink burns really well...
When it comes to best flame colors, I bet Paizo has that one in the bag!

1)In your opinion, is the world of Golarion on a fixed or mutable time-stream? Meaning, are all events in history fixed and unalterable or does the possibility of time travel allow for the participation and possible clanging of events in the past? (Canonically speaking)
2) Does this in any way interact with the Age of Lost Omens?
3)Unrelated- What would be the equivalent of Dragotha on Golarion? (high-end, undead dragon)

Did you miss my zoo question?
I did.
There's lots of zoos on Golarion. Some more famous than others. There's one in Magnimar, at the very least. I believe there's at LEAST one in Absalom. Other cities doubtless have them as well.

1) Any time PCs are involved in ANYthing... the answer has to be mutable time stream. Canonically speaking though... I'm not gonna make that decision until we do an actual time travel adventure.
2) Only in that the "death of prophecy" is to a certain extent us acknowledging that PCs break prophecies (aka go off the rails) all the time.

I love the Grey Wardens in Dragon Age, that elite fighting force everyone seems to recognize by name. Which organization would you say is most like them on Golarion? Or are there a couple different which are similar?
There's not really a good choice for a "Gray Warden" replacement in Pathifnder. I suppose the best choice would probably be the crusaders of Iomedae. Maybe the Knights of Ozem.

Been a while James :)
Could you name a few ways that a humanoid (human, elf, dwarf, etc..) could permanently acquire the advanced creature template? I assume being born "perfect" is a way, but others?
Depending on the GM... a miracle or a wish could do the trick. As could divine intervention or exposure to powerful magical effects. An artifact could do it as well. Basically... any of the classic origins for a superhero would do the trick.

James, I've been thinking of the level distribution in Pathfinder from a population perspective (meaning how large a percentage are a certain level).
This is the possible distribution I came up with:
L1-5: 80%
L6-10: 15%
L11-15: 4.5%
L16-20: 0.49%
L21+: 0.01%
21+ would be anyone with sufficient mythic tiers to push them over the normal limit I suppose, if you aren't using epic level rules.
I did all the levels percentage individually in a spreadsheet, but it is too big to post in it's entirety. Also tried to turn it into a graph, but as it would be a very steep curve I had to use an algorithmic scale to make it less "messy", and I'm not a big fan of those.
Basically assuming there are 200 million people in the world (roughly what Earth had around 1AD), there would be 1 million people over level 15 on the planet. 0.5% might seem a bit high, but it is believed that around 1% of the population has a Ph.D (or some other form of doctorate, like a MD or JD) so maybe not.
What do you think of this level distribution? Do you agree with my estimates?

>>Azu<< Paizo and third-party publishers are always looking for reliable, creative, and conscientious freelancers. That means demonstrating your skills and ideas... so submit your best polished stuff to Wayfinder and Yggsdrasil and Gygax Magazine, to the KQ site, to open calls for adventures and encounters, and to the SuperStah! 2014. Be professional, communicate, and deliver quality work on-time and hitting the requested word counts. Learn as much as you can. Hone your skills and build up your RPG resume. When you're ready, pitch your ideas to the smaller third-party publishers and let them know you will also develop their ideas into finished products.
