Hello James,

one request for your opinion on what would be a rules question, if I may...

Would you consider an outsider familiar (as attainable via the Improved Familiar feat) to be affected by spells like Banishment or Dismissal?

If so, is there any easy way for the Wizard (or Witch, or whatever) to get her familiar back?

Here are two abilities:

If the tactician also has cavalier levels, these levels stack for determining the number of uses per day, and he can take the better progression.

This ability replaces weapon training 1.

How would you say these two abilities interact for a multiclass cavalier / fighter? Would you get a second Teamwork Feat as a bonus feat to use with Tactician? Does the second ability also allow Fighter and Cavalier levels to stack for determining tactician's duration per use?

I think I'm going to post this in the rules forum too, but I wanted to see what you thought.

Blundering Defense:
Pre-req - Cautious Fighter, Halfling

When you fight defensively or youse the total defense action, allies gain a luck bonus to AC and CMD equal to 1/2 the dodge bonus from the action you are taking. Allies only gain this bonus while they are adjacent to you.

The focus is not to have the halfling be the actual target. The main intention is the +5 AC/CMD (Luck) that it sports by being next to someone. The more the merrier.

Is there a chance that a gazetteer for the following areas will be released far into the future:

1) Southern Garund

2) Casmaron

Or is the main focus right now on the Inner Sea? Would there have to be enough interest from fans to consider publishing those gazetteers?

Considering the difficulties in creating the Jade Regent AP and its supporting products, how long until we leave the Inner Sea again?

Nope. There's not enough room for all the dinosaurs that ever lived to exist at the same time on Golarion. They have lots of competition for food and territory too, what with all the monsters.

Undead outsiders are treated as any other undead as far as how positive and negative energy affect them.

Mr. Jacobs,

While I love the mechanics for the pathfinder rpg, there are a few aspects of the lore I'm not too fond of(and many more I love), the main being the enforcing of the "always chaotic evil" label onto certain races (orcs, goblinoids, etc).

As a rule I don't like setting the distinction between good and evil on racial lines, I don't like labeling sentient creatures as monsters to make it "ok" for a party to slaughter them en masse, and somewhat selfishly, my favorite races happen to be orc, half-orc, and tiefling, which in most campaigns are often shoe-horned into villainous roles(worse, in regards to the first, cannon-fodder roles, and I hate cannon fodder in all it's forms). So while I use pathfinder mechanics for the most part, my world is largely homebrewed to allow for so called "monster" races to have as much capacity for good or evil as any humanoid race(which tends to have them floating around the darker side of neutral, truly good characters of any race are a rarity in my world).

Now, my question is what was paizo's primary motivation in enforcing the role of the traditional badguy races? Was there a lot of debate over the matter or was it fairly unanimous?

We don't "enforce" the always chaotic evil label, in fact. As mentioned on page 5 of the Bestiary...

Pathfinder RPG Bestiary wrote:
The alignments listed for each monster in this book represent the norm for these monsters—they can vary as you require them to in order to serve the needs of your campaign. Emphasis mine.

The assumed world for Pathfinder is Golarion, and we made a lot of choices with that world. One of those is that orcs are MUCH more like Tolkien's orcs (AKA chaotic evil rampagers) and less like the orcs of Warcraft. There can certainly be non-chaotic evil orcs in Golarion, but they're rare and unusual.

For the most part, we skewed heavily traditional for the alignments for 2 reasons.

1) We were nervous that if we made TOO many changes to things underlying the flavor of the game that we would estrange our existing fan base. The fact that at the time we were switching from 3.5 to Pathfinder was the same time D&D was switching to 4th edition and that they WERE making some sweeping and enormous changes to the flavor of the game further convinced us that we should stick to the traditions because there would be a fair number of folks who prefer those traditions. As it turned out, we were pretty much spot on with that assumption.

2) Because we at Paizo are fans of the game's traditions and legacy and nostalgia, and changing things just to change them doesn't sit well with us unless we REALLY think they need to be changed. And orcs as chaotic evil creatures isn't something we thought needed to be changed.

BUT. As the Bestiary mentions... those are the assumed norms for their alignments, and can vary as needed for anyone.

I don't.

I do like the fact that we've found some excellent authors and even some valuable, now indispensable employees via RPG superstar. THAT is an aspect I get excited about.

But managing the contest is a big deal, and takes a lot of time and resources. I don't have those to spare for the contest, and so I generally don't really pay much attention to it other than a cursory glance now and then and chatting now and then with folks here about how things are going. It's not until the final round stats that I get in there and spend a weekend reading and writing feedback for the final four proposals—I want to do so without any preconceived notions about who the contestants are as well.

This year's RPGSS experience has been slightly different, in that I got a chance to screen the basic ideas for the proposals for the last round before they were developed into full adventures. This screening wasn't intended to provide any feedback—only to let the writers know that they can proceed because their ideas don't parallel anything we've got in production. That happened last year, and as a result the proposed adventure (which in my opinion was easily the best and most interesting of the 4) essentially died on the vine because we couldn't do it. (The adventure was about a monastery taken over by giants that had a portal to Leng in the dungeon below... which is pretty much the same plots as Shattered Star parts 4 and 5, which at that point had not yet been announced.)

There's a chance. I'm more interested at this precise moment in doing a gazetteer of Southern Garund or Arcadia. A gazetteer for Casmaron would require us to have published rules for psychic magic since Vudra's all about that... and since we don't have a psychc magic sourcebook yet... Casmaron is not yet an option.

The main focus will ALWAYS remain on the Inner Sea. When we do other continent books, they'll be like the Dragon Empires Gazetteer—tied to an adventure path and several other products that feature themes from that continent for 6 to 9 months... but then we want a few years of Inner Sea focus before and after those at the least.

If we do one of the other continents and we see a huge upsurge of interest in that other contient, all bets are off. We didn't see a surge of interest large enough to abandon the Inner Sea after Tian Xia was covered, though...

If I were to do this, I would start the campaign in Magnimar and have the PCs charged with settling the land west of Riddleport and north of Ravenmoor in order to expand Magnimar's influence. Riddleport would become an early antagonist, but the main enemy would end up being the city of Korvosa... likely with some Ileosa or Runelord involvement.

It's not even CLOSE to the part of that AP that makes me the most nervous; doing up that character doesn't actually make me nervous in the slightest.

The part that makes me nervous is that the whole AP is a Mythic AP, and no one knows if folks will love or hate that... and worse, no one has ever done a Mythic AP before, and so there's a lot of uncharted territory in the development of it. More so than there was for the first Pathifnder AP, which was partially written and developed before the Pathfinder rules were finalized in print.

That's disappointing; sort of. I was really excited when I learned about the "fighters get tactician too!" concept. I thought it might be an attempt to help make multiclassing more viable. Not in the sense of, "is it mechanically possible to multiclass?" but rather in the sense of, "how can I build a unique character?"

If archetypes have one fundamental weakness as a design idea, I'd argue that this is it. Archetypes often remove much of a character's unique specialization, especially when they trade away things like bloodline powers, bonus feats, rogue talents/rage powers, and so on for a specific unalterable list of abilities. And I'd also argue that the ability to make a unique character with his (or her) own personal mix of powers is one of Pathfinder's draws over, say, 4th Edition. That's why I always liked multiclassing / prestige class dipping, anyway.

Hello Mr. Jacobs,

In this thread: Best Larger Weapon: Huge Falcata?
The question about if having to use an additional hand to use a larger weapon than they would normally be able to is considered a penalty.

This is confused a little by the monster ability that the redcap has the ability:

As a redcap is size small and uses a medium sized two handed weapon.

Now with the tiefling variant ability:

Hey James,

Do you have any books, novels preferred over rule, you'd recommend that gives a good take on what it takes to actually live in Golarion? Specifically I'm looking for something set in Kyonin. I'm just looking for something that goes into some of the minutia of life and politics in addition to adventuring goodness. Extra points if it involves the struggle with Treerazer and gives a good look into both internal and external dealings.

Thanks!

Hey James, I have two questions about creature creation.

1. What factors go into deciding the main type of an original creature you are making? Like, what made the bone golem a construct instead of undead? Or the rust monster an aberration as opposed to a magical beast?

2. What characteristics make a creature the Fey type? I felt a connection to nature was one, but there are several creatures of the Outsider type (like kami) that have similar connections to the natural world.

First of all, you are awesome for having a thread like this. I was just recently made aware that this thread existed and I think it's great. I only have two questions right now:

1. A similar question has been asked about teleportation in general, and answered by you. I still have a nagging curiosity in the back of my head so I hope you don't mind. Lets say a character has the Dimensional Dervish feat and is fighting a flying creature. Can that character teleport up to the creature's level, strike it, teleport around it striking it a few more times, then teleport back to the ground for his final stopping point? Or do all intermediate teleportation points need to be on solid ground? This is assuming the creature is within range to do this, as the feat limits total distance you can travel. I know it could be done with some method of levitation or flying, but how about without it? Due to the general answer about teleportation you gave before I feel like this probably can't be done, but I am still curious.

2. Dimensional Agility specifically calls out Dimension Door or Abundant Step as it's only prerequisites. Could a Shadowdancer's Shadow Jump ability qualify for taking Dimensional Agility? The only difference I could see between abundant step and shadow jump that would really make a difference was the range increments for Shadowdancer's vs. the Ki required for Monks, so I compared them. A lvl 20 Monk with 18 WIS could use Abundant step 7 times per day (this is assuming the Monk doesn't use Ki for anything else that day), a Shadowdancer would eat up his total range in about 5 jumps if he used the full 60 feet allotted for each jump. Of course the number of jumps could go up slightly if he did not use a full 60 feet each time (this is assuming the Shadowdancer only use Shadow Jump for Dimensional Dervish attacks that day). I am curious if there is an official rule on this? If not what is your opinion?

3) Do you have any advice on making non-spellcaster BBEGs? I want to make a warlord type villain that is still a threat by himself. I'm thinking some good unique magic items might go a long way toward that goal. Any other advice?

Sorry for bring up this question again, but I got an additional query on this subject.

You mention that the ideal of the Alchemical Weapon (Su) is to get "damaging" alchemical weapons like acid or alchemist fire to affect targets that are some distance away.

However, Alchemical Weapon (Su) states sneezing powder as an example of a harmful alchemical liquid/powder. Yet sneezing powder is not a damaging alchemical substance, it is a disabling one. It gives a disabling effect on a failed save.
Even though sneezing poweder is a non-damaging alchemical item, it can be used by Alchemical Weapon (Su), as per the ability's description.

In the same vein, Tanglefoot bag is also listed as a Alchemical Weapon in Ultimate Equipment. And it is also a disabling alchemical item.
Tanglefoot bag is also stated that it is a "goo", which is usually a liquid, a thick liquid, but still a liquid:

Ultimate Equipment pg. 107 wrote:

A tanglefoot bag is a small sack filled with tar, resin, and other sticky substances. When you throw a tanglefoot bag at a creature (as a ranged touch attack with a range increment of 10 feet), the bag comes apart and goo bursts out, entangling the target and then becoming tough and resilient upon exposure to air. An entangled creature takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls and a –4 penalty to Dexterity and must make a DC 15 Reflex save or be glued to the floor, unable to move. Even on a successful save, it can move only at half speed. Huge or larger creatures are unaffected by a tanglefoot bag. A flying creature is not stuck to the floor, but it must make a DC 15 Reflex save or be unable to fly (assuming it uses its wings to fly) and fall to the ground. A tanglefoot bag does not function underwater.

A creature that is glued to the floor (or unable to fly) can break free by making a DC 17 Strength check or by dealing 15 points of damage to the goo with a slashing weapon. A creature trying to scrape goo off itself, or another creature assisting, does not need to make an attack roll; hitting the goo is automatic, after which the creature that hit makes a damage roll to see how much of the goo was scraped off. Once free, the creature can move (including flying) at half speed. If the entangled creature attempts to cast a spell, it must make a concentration check with a DC of 15 + the spell’s level or be unable to cast the spell. The goo becomes brittle and fragile after 2d4 rounds, cracking apart and losing its effectiveness. An application of universal solvent to a stuck creature dissolves the alchemical goo immediately. Crafting this item is a DC 25 Craft (alchemy) check.

Given that sneezing powder, a non-damaging, disabling alchemical item is allowed to be use with Alchemical Weapon (Su). Why would tanglefoot bag, a similar, non-damaging, disabling alchemical item, not be allowed?

Awesome! Have you ever read Sepulchrave's Tales of Wyre? It was a campaign journal on ENWorld that explored whether a similar thing were possible.

Nope, never did.

Regarding Tanglefoot bags please explain why a flask of alchemist's fire is a liquid and a bag of tar or resin is not. Viscosity does not change its state of matter.

Because I said so?

More seriously though... that's always how I've imagined them to be. It's no big deal if you let tanglefoot bags work.

Hey James...Merisiel has fainted in her thread...

Is she going to be ok?

Hello Mr. Jacobs,

I have a rules question if you don't mind. I already asked this of Mr. Reynolds, but I think he maybe busy.

In this thread: Best Larger Weapon: Huge Falcata?
The question about if having to use an additional hand to use a larger weapon than they would normally be able to is considered a penalty.

This is confused a little by the monster ability that the redcap has the ability:

PRD wrote:
Heavy Weapons (Ex) A redcap can wield weapons sized for Medium creatures without penalty.

As a redcap is size small and uses a medium sized two handed weapon.

Now with the tiefling variant ability:

"PRSRD wrote:
You have over-sized limbs, allowing you to use Large weapons without penalty.

Very similar language is used and I was wondering if you could please give your best interpretation.

Thank you,
-Hexen

Redcaps break the rule and their ability should not enter into any arguments or assumptions about any other creature doing this trick, so you can't cite or refer to redcaps for this reason.

That said, the ability is basically the same, just worded different.

Thanks!

For Kyonin, check out Elves of Golarion and the Kyonin gazetteer in Pathfinder #17. There's a lot of non-rule stuff about Kyonin in both places.

1) For the most part, it's personal preference. In the case of something with the word "golem" in its name, it's always a construct.

2) Fairy tale elements combined with links to the first world combined with a generally humanoid shape combined with generally humanoid emotions, all mixed with personal preference.

Were you a fan of Veronica Mars, James? If so, then the aforementioned Kickstarter was launched with a $2,000,000 goal this morning, where Warner Brothers gave them permission and said if they hit the goal they would distribute a Veronica Mars movie. It fully funded in under ten hours.

Since I had to google Veronica Mars to know who you were talking about... I guess I would say no, not a fan.

Do still hold out hope for a non-evil orc tribe down the line though, or the opportunity to start one

Never say never and all that... but this is very unlikely to appear in print. It's just not something I'm all that interested in, mostly because I've had my fill of it from Warcraft.
