Hi James,

I for one would love a hardcover book on the Darklands, so sign me up as one potential buyer. Especially would love to see more on the vaults of Orv.

I have another question. The Occult Bestiary was just announced for this summer. The description mentioned things like psychic liches and occult Night Hags. Will this book basically just include "occult" versions of already existing monsters (like what was contained within the Mythic Adventurers Hardcover), or will we get completely new monsters as well?

I have a question that is sort of like a rules question, but has quite a bit of houserule aspects to it, and also I just wanted your opinion as an official of Paizo:

How would a Familiar/Animal Companion/Cohort work mechanically?
By the rules of the Familiar, the animal has all of its base stats and does not level up or gain racial hit dice, it only has some stats improving at the rate of its masters.
As an Animal Companion, they gain racial hit dice at a rate parallel with their master's and also gain feats/skills and such.
As a Cohort, they gain class levels at a rate relative to their leader and also gain features as any other NPC.

So which rules circumvent the others? Which rules won't apply? How would you rule it?

One issue that concerns me is the Natural Armor adjustment from the familiar rules, would these stack with the Natural Armor increase from being an Animal Companion? or Increasing in size? What about getting an amulet of natural armor? By RAW, the familiar rules state that it is in addition to whatever their natural armor already is, but if that's the case, you are looking at a HUGE natural armor bonus, (like in the 20s)

A good question for the rules board and an FAQ tag.

In my games it's a free action as part of a move.

The book's still being outlined, but my goal and hope for it is that it'll have a mix; variant monsters (MUCH more variant in nature than what Mythic did) AND completely new monsters, with the majority of them being new. Stay tuned!

I don't really think a familiar/animal companion/cohort WOULD work, honestly. Those are three different sets of rules that were built to allow very similar things—a sidekick to a character, essentially. And it works best if a sidekick's only filling one role. Multiple sidekicks are possible, but in my opinion, that lessens the point and weakens the point and makes it less interesting overall.

So... these rules don't need to circumvent the others, because they shouldn't ever apply to the same sidekick.

They don't really exist. Something like the above, deciding that standing up from seated is part of a move action, is something I'd generally rule on as an on-the-fly ruling during play. I don't write them down or record them; they're basically just my style of GMing.

The only two house rules beyond the norm that I always play with are:

1) When a bard gains a new tier of Versatile Performance, the player gets to reallocate ALL skill ranks.

2) Breath of life is called cure deadly wounds so that clerics and others can swap out spells to cast it spontaneously.

Most of my other house rules got more or less adopted into Pathfinder when it was created, frankly...

Hi James, I hope you are having a good weekend.

In a few months our group will be running a Skull & Shackles campaign where most characters (PCs and NPCs alike) will have firearms. They will be martial weapons instead of exotic weapons, and the prices will be reduced.

I have read the sidebars in that AP on adjusting the game for that assumption, but I also know that you have a lot of experience running games of that type.

Can you share a bit about what changes you made to the rules when running such a game? Did you do anything like use armor-as-DR rules to offset all of the touch attacks? Were there any things you tried that either worked very well or very poorly?

Thanks.

I am encountering confusion about Cold Weather Gear and cold rules while running AP67/Snows of Summer. Wondering if you can help.

When the temperature is between 0-32F, which of the following is/are true:
1. Characters wearing cold weather gear do not have to make hourly Fort checks.
2. Characters wearing cold weather gear still make hourly Fort checks and get +5, but the DC does not increase.
3. Characters wearing cold weather gear must make hourly Fort checks, get +5 and the DC increases by 1 for each check.
4. Unless a character has Endure Elements or similar protection they are not considered fully protected at 0-32F and have to make hourly checks, even if they have cold weather gear (which is just better protection than unprotected, but still not total protection).

My assumption is 3 & 4, but opinions differ because of how the Cold Effects section is worded, including module-specific wording in AP67.

Finally, is there any difference for these rules beteween normal cold and supernatural/magical cold (such as that in AP67) with respect to protection, or is the risk assessment always based solely on temperature?

Thanks.

(ex: A Cleric from Absalom worshipping the Ascended Pantheon be able to create simple ale or wine, a Cayden Cailean gift, as well as bestowing Good Hope to her allies, a gift from Iomadae)

I am not sure if the gods are okay if someone like to like a bunch of them, rather than a single one.

A cleric (and by extension, a warpriest) can't worship a pantheon, so that's not an option anyway. And since no other class has to pick their class options based on a deity, it's not really an issue there either.
How about feats that are designated to a specific Deity? Can Pantheon worshippers gain Courage in a Bottle (Cayden Cailean feat) as well as Butterfly Sting (Desna feat) if they worship the Standpoint Pantheon, or do the deities still believe that worshiping all of them is still not enough devotion to give these Feats of Strength?

I'd say no. Worshiping a pantheon is not the same as worshiping a single deity, and allowing just anyone to pick one of those specific deity-themed feats erodes the flavor of worshiping that deity. It's not a case of the deity believing anything. It's a case of a worshiper herself being focused enough on the worship of a single deity being appropriate for such a feat.

Put another way, in world, if a character is devout enough to qualify for such a feat, that more or less means by definition she worships that single deity anyway. A worshiper who only partially venerated that deity would not qualify nor would she consider that feat an option.

It's worth noting that in the Eberron setting where Pantheon worship was allowed, they set up the Pantheon as a specific diety with the same amount of domains available, not as a pick and swap from anything in the Pantheon.

My suggestion? Do one of these:

1) Remove the touch AC element of firearms. OR

2) Make firearms resolve against normal attacks, but give pistols the ability to reduce armor/natural armor by 2 and rifles the ability to reduce it by 4.

Mixing a full BAB with the high damage/crit of a gun and the low AC was too much, in my opinion.

For the cold question itself, that's best asked in the rules forum. But going with assumption 3 and 4 is fine. Just pick the one that sounds best for your group and let the players know.

There's no difference between cold caused by natural or supernatural effects as far as these rules are concerned.

Not a question. But also worth noting that this was one of several creative decisions that were made about Eberron that helped me make my decision that the setting was Not For Me.

Nope. I use the rules as written in the one Pathfinder game I'm currently playing with a gunslinger player. I wanted to see how those rules work before I made decisions and now the game's close enough to being done that it's not worth ramping it back.

Those are in fact the first two of his books I read, although in the opposite order. As in the case of Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Dean Koontz, I was introduced to F. Paul Wilson via "The Tomb" by my grandmother.

My absolute favorite book by Wilson is Nightworld, but that one's best if you read all the books of the Adversary cycle (which include all the Repairman Jack books, all of which are quite good, and many of which are quite great themselves). I also quite like "The Touch," and certain elements of that novel inspired the ancient history of my own campaign world, and thus in a very roundabout way also inspired Golarion.

I have seen the Keep, and there are parts of it that I think are great (the soundtrack, the casting, and some of the visuals), but I think that other parts of it are terrible... primarily the changes they made to the story near the end. I'd love for it to be remade.

Has Inner Sea Races already gone to print? I'm super excited!

I do hope you'll be delving into various ethnicities for nonhuman races, such as elves. According to one of the Pathfinder Society Venture-Captains, I'm not permitted to play as an Ekujae unless my skin is copper-toned or lighter. The discussion is getting uncomfortable, to be honest, especially for a company that prides itself on doing better.

I'm hoping that with Inner Sea Races, I'll be able to point to an actual rulebook and say, "Not all elves are X." I knew you were planning to do better, especially with all the parts of Elves of Golarion that were never intended.

Do the Ekujae have a primary religion, and if so, what is it and how "traditionally" elven is it?

Do the Ekujae cross over with other Mwangi cultures at all, or are they totally insular? (I had an idea for an Ekujae who became a student of the Magaambya.)

Can you tell me anything about that school? What should I read to learn more?

Will ISR have information on how to play a character of a given ethnicity? Not just skills and feats, but personal rituals, beliefs, sayings, manner of dress, etc. Because otherwise... I'll just have to keep pestering you for answers. :)

Thank you for your time, and I'm sorry to be such a bother.

Hi Mr. Jacobs I have a few questions that have been bugging me.
1. Is the story from the Harrow book “The Sickness” the origin story of Urgathoa? It mentions the thing that Urgathoa desires and Pharasma stole from her, and I guess with Death’s possessions I would say a mortal could flee his power. Plus disease is part of her domain.
2. How legal is the production of holy water in Cheliax? I mean with their wide use of devils would they want that poison around that much?
3. My group is playing Skull and Shackles and we just met Kerdak Bonefist. We, including the GM, have no idea however what is up with his hand. Does he hide it? Does it have a special ability? Is it a curse or a magic item? Is this info out there somewhere?
4. I’ve had a few players lose limbs during play and I said as long a they had the lost limb and it was relatively undamaged just using a certain amount of cure spells they could reattach it. Does this seem fair to you or would they have to use regeneration?
5. I really like the naturally magic items (not made by a spellcaster), like the Rimepelt from AP 68 and the Whispering Lilies from the Lost Pathfinder short story, can we get more of these?
6. Why is the worship of the Infernal Lords and other infernal demi-deities illegal in Cheliax? They are all servants of Asmodeus so why can’t people get power from them?

James,

1) If Apsu and Dahak have breath weapons, what kind are they most likely to be (besides "whatever kind they want because they're gods")? I have suppositions, but am interested in what you have to say.

2) What is it that Aroden was supposed to be "returning" from when he died instead? Was he missing, or had he just not interacted with the material plane in a while?

3) If the goddess from your setting that inspired Pharasma was Lawful neutral, are you surprised if Pharasma seems more lawful than most other alignments to me and some of my friends?

4) In your setting, does that goddess (Turthonir if I recall the name) have Paladins that worship her?

I wasn't really into network TV shows at the time, so that helped. And by the time I was around people who loved the show (AKA started working at Paizo), it was already several seasons in and back in those days there was no streaming options. Today, it's several seasons of shows, well over a hundred hours, and I've not had the time to add a new show to my schedule. Jessica "curated" the first season and showed the five or so best episodes, and THAT'S what finally got me on board.

And I quite liked the big block of cheese day episode.

Oh GOD no... Inner Sea Races is still being developed. It's coming along, but it's still a fair bit away from going to print.

We will be talking a bout about racial ethnicities, much more so for humans. And if a Pathfinder Society GM is really being that obstinate about skin color... please report that to Mike Brock, because that's ridiculous. In any event, we'll be mentioning non-human ethnicities a bit, and will be talking about how some elves in particular have darker skintones. I'm TRYING to make sure we get a lot of these illustrated too, but that's tricky since there's a lot of races and not an infinite amount of room in the book. BUT yes... if a GM is saying you have to play a light-skinned ANYthing... that's inappropriate, and should be brought to Mike Brock's attention.

I suspect that the primary religion for the Ekujae is something akin to druidism. Gozreh worship is pretty common too there though, along with worship of Ketephys.

Whether or not the Ekujae cross over with other cultures there varies by tribe. An Ekujae student of Magaambya is a cool idea.

There's not much written about that school at this point though; Inner Sea Magic has some info, I believe, and its founder is detailed in Mythic Realms.

Inner Sea Races covers a LOT Of information, and for human ethnicities, there'll be several pages each. For non-human ethnicities, not a lot, since we need to focus on a more overarching presentation for those races. It's just a reality of the size of the book and how much time we have to put it together, alas.

And don't worry about being a bother! Questions are the whole POINT of this thread! :-D

Are Minotaurs a male only race in Pathfinder? I looked up some stuff, and it seems that in 1st and 2nd edition D&D they are a monogender (assuming that is the correct term) species. It's less clear in 3rd edition but seems to be the general rule except in the Dragonlance setting. Only 4th edition made it clear that there are both male and female minotaurs. It caused a bit of a debate between me and a friend once, but it's not that big of a deal in the longer run. Just something I think was worth asking since there is a chance to do so.

1) Unrevealed. Lots of what's in the Harrow is intentionally vague and methaphrical.

2) It's not legal. Holy water's something you'd need to buy on the black market in most parts of Cheliax, but in fringe areas where the Government isn't as oppressive or the cities are more cosmopolitan, it's more readily available.

3) He does not hide it. It's in his name. He wouldn't claim the name "BONEfist" and then not show off his skeletal hand. He's detailed in the 6th book of Skull & Shackles.

4) The game, as written, does not include limb loss. If you include it in your games, you need to include affordable solutions to fixing it earlier, not later. Of course, if you DO make it more affordable, suddenly peg leg pirates are lots rarer. It's a balance each GM will need to achieve on her own. I'd say that using a cure spell to heal all the damage done during the severing WHILE holding the severed limb against the stump WITHIN, say, a minute or an hour of the event should work though.

5) We shall see. They're tricky, since they break the normal rules for how magic items are made (and thus, how magic items are balanced).

6) Because the worship of Asmodeus is the state religion. You can certainly worship other devils, but if you don't worship Asmodeus above all... that's breaking the law.

1) They are dragons, and thus of COURSE they have breath weapons. They're also deities, so there are no rules for what they can do. AKA: It's whatever they want.

2) The short version: when Aroden was active on Golarion, he was at first a quasi deity (a mythic wizard with the Divine Source ability or something similar) who soon ascended into demigod status. At some point (we haven't said when this is), he ascends from Demigod status (and thus having a stat block, probably CR 26 at first but CR 30 by the end), and enters true deity status (and thus no longer has a stat block). At that point, he leaves the Material Plane to, I suspect, get his Great Beyond realm in order and set things up out there to join the Core Pantheon officially. His prophesied return was "Once he's done there, he'll return to usher in a new golden age for humanity" or the like.

3) Turthonir was that goddess, and yes, she is lawful neutral. And thus no, I'm not surprised that Pharasma seems more lawful to you.

4) Not really.

There are female minotaurs. Male/female is the norm for races, and just because it's not specifically called out, that should not be taken as evidence to the contrary.

We don't actually say so in the Bestiary... but we do in Mythical Monsters Revisited.

There are no male harpies.

Hey James, a couple of question...

1) How do Pharasma and her church view things like the Alumms from Ketapesh, the Final Blades from Galt, and other soul trapping things considering they keep the souls from Judgement?

2) In which countries is slavery leagle? IO am a little confused here...as I hear one thing but don't remember reading it. For instance is slavery leagle in Taldor?

Thanks for your time.

It's worth noting that in the Eberron setting where Pantheon worship was allowed, they set up the Pantheon as a specific diety with the same amount of domains available, not as a pick and swap from anything in the Pantheon.
Not a question. But also worth noting that this was one of several creative decisions that were made about Eberron that helped me make my decision that the setting was Not For Me.

It was a leadup to this question. What do you dislike specifically about that approach?

1) Not favorably.

2) I don't believe we've ever nailed that list down in print. It's certainly legal in Cheliax and Katapesh. It's certainly illegal in Absalom. I don't recall off the top of my head if it's legal or not in Taldor—I suspect it is, but with moderation.

I think that clerics are more interesting when they focus their worship on one specific deity. It helps to separate them out and gives them a more unique class role. I like to think of it akin, to a certain extent, to people who really get passionate about a fictional character or author or performer, to the extent that they do cosplay of the character or travel across the world to hear the performer.

But also, I really REALLY love how clerics and the concept of specialty priests were presented in 2nd edition D&D for the Forgotten Realms. Essentially, every deity had his/her own variant cleric class in that system, and that REALLY appealed to me.

Finally, deities are kind of the way a world who doesn't have "main characters" gets the "main character" vibe. A game world's main characters are, of course, the PCs, but when we design that world, we don't get to design those main characters. It's the one part of the story we CAN'T do. And so, for someone who's designing a world, designing deities really is the closest it comes to being able to build your own characters and proxies in the setting. And thus, being able to play a character who worships one of those deities is a way that you kinda get to play your own character in a world you design. I don't know if I explained that all that well... but yeah... all of those reasons are why I prefer clerics to worship a single deity. There's plenty of options for classes to worship multiple deities, but there NEEDS to be at least one option for a class to be all about single deity worship and to have their class abilities defined by that.

Iron Gods Spoilery Question:
In the end, the PCs have the option to elevate Casandalee as a minor goddess in her own right, and have the option of determining her domains and alignment by inserting new modules into her. From an ethical standpoint, is this really a good idea? Casandalee may be an AI, but by this point the PCs probably consider her a friend too, and she has her own will (which is why she broke from Unity in the first place). Why would she let other people decide the kind of person she should be? Why doesn't SHE decide what kind of deity she wants to become?

Also what would be elements of her portfolio, as opposed to domains, given that a deity's portfolio can be a lot more specific and detailed as to just what their interests and beliefs are?

Wait, I'm confused. Doesn't Absalom have one of the larger slave markets in the Inner Sea? And laws that you can't assault the slavers with magic to free all the slaves or something?

Or am I remembering a different city?

I love all of these words. :)

Will there be ethnicity groups for half-orcs as well, or would that be mostly overlapped information from human ethnicities?

The Exchange

3 quick questions about splash misses that seem to have no clear or correct answer elsewhere and are leaving me scratching my head. Note: Here is a diagram pertaining to my question: Splash Miss Diagrom

1. When you miss with a splash weapon and start counting range increment squares, do you start ON the numbered square as 1 or do you start in the NEXT square outward in the indicated direction as the first counted square?

The reason I ask this question is that if you throw something like alchemist's fire at a range increment of 1 (10') and miss, splash damage will never hit the target unless you start counting range increment squares immediately next to the target.

2. Exactly what does "indicated direction" mean in the excerpt below?

Splash Weapon SRD wrote:
If you miss the target (whether aiming at a creature or a grid intersection), roll 1d8. This determines the misdirection of the throw, with 1 falling short (off-target in a straight line toward the thrower), and 2 through 8 rotating around the target creature or grid intersection in a clockwise direction. Then, count a number of squares in the indicated direction equal to the range increment of the throw. After you determine where the weapon landed, it deals splash damage to all creatures in that square and in all adjacent squares.

Is the "indicated direction" a radial fan-out using the target as the center as shown by the blue arrows in the linked diagram (where 1d8=1 would move the impact TOWARDS the attacker as in the text, rather than ending up behind the target on multiple increment squares, etc.

3. What happens when missing with vertical splash weapon attacks (throwing at a target above you)? Do you assume the same horizontal plane in space around the target or do you rotate the plane 90 degrees and treat the miss vectors as #5 pointing straight up and #1 pointing straight down?

Many thanks in advance...and for your other great replies.

1. Sarenrae deems the Cult of the Dawnflower nigh heretical for its miltarism. What do other deities think of organizations that worship them, but are one alignment step away? For instance, a CG Calistrian brothel, or a CN Cayden Cailean church&bar?

2. Are there circumstances under which a paladin would agree with slavery? Like, the slaves are well provided for and treated kindly, but are still considered owned property?

3. Given that you don't even have enough time to read Paizo's stuff, do you ever make time to read 3PP publications?

4. Have you ever looked into buying Scuttlecove from WoTC?

5. If a CRPG for Pathfinder were to be developed with its own original story, would you prefer it be built like a Roguelike, a first-person adventure, or party-quester (ala NWN)?

6. Are Paladins of Lymneris and/or Arshea a thing? If so, do they have less discretion with prostitutional (sic) clientele given they have Divine Health?

Abadar, patron of cities, wealth, merchants and the law, has, of five Domains, one that's relevant, Law. He probably should have Community, as patron of cities. He probably should have access to some sort of Wealth / Greed / Trade domain, if such a thing were to be created for Pathfinder (preferably not just poached from the Wealth / Greed / Trade domains in 3.5).
Abadar and Erastil have a not-always-friendly sort of conflict going. One of those areas where they conflict is that Erastil is very much an advocate for the citizens of a community, and thus he has the Community domain. Abadar, on the other hand, is much more "corporate." He doesn't really care as much about the individual, and thus does NOT have the community domain, on purpose. Admittedly a pretty subtle move on my part, but that's the basic reasoning there. And since we have no Wealth/Greed/Trade domain in the game, he offers Nobility instead. (Subdomains, from the APG, will help as well.)

Hey, James, I ran across this question you answered almost five years ago, but it ties into something I'm wondering about in relation to Giantslayer.

Trunau has a prominent Banker, but the vibe I get off the town is much more Erastil than Abadar: more defending-one's-home-and-hearth than civilization-must-prevail. Am I misreading the atmosphere of the community?
