Hello!
So I just stumbled upon this thread:
http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2s1lz?Clerics-of-Razmir-Why-Not
and all the included links taught me why Clerics worship only one god always in Golarion.Right on.
But, I do have a question! Imagine this hypothetical if you would:
•Party is about to take a voyage across (ie: not costal) the Inner Sea and said party includes a Cleric of, oh let's say Torag. Obviously, the party wants a blessing for safe travels across the treacherous waters, and as always, they turn to their holy man (cleric) for such a thing.
Does the cleric:
1) Pray to Gozreh, God/ess of the sea, because this is his/her domain and they don't want to incur his/her fickle wrath, potentially putting Torag in a foul mood with his devoted servant?
2) Pray to Torag, his chosen diety, even though Torag has nothing at all to do with the sea, potentially inviting Gozreh's fickle wrath for daring to shun him/her in his/her very domain?(Or, tl;dr - If you live in a world where the existence of multiple gods is simply a fact of life, how do you totally devote yourself to just a single one without constantly stepping on the toes of the others? How does a Cleric cope with this?)
1) The cleric prays to Torag. If he prays to Gozreh, he runs the risk of pissing Torag off and not being a cleric. If the character was another class OTHER than cleric (probably not warpriest or paladin), then praying to Gozreh wouldn't be a problem, really.
The whole point of the cleric is that she DOES focus her devotion on one deity, in a world where there are lots of deities. That singular devotion and loyalty is the fundamental core theme of the cleric, and it's something that pretty much no other class requires to that extent. Warpriests SORT of do, but that's just because they're a hybrid class that inherits that trait from clerics.

James Jacobs wrote:Not really. Absalom gets its drinking water mostly from rain barrels and cisterns and reservoirs. Mundane, but there's plenty not mundane in the city as it stands. It doesn't need help there with magic water systems.I guess I thought the consensus was that Absalom had cisterns, and I got to thinking about how cool the basilica cistern looks.
So what I suppose I meant to ask is, is there such an aesthetically pleasing cistern in Absalom? Would you ever set an adventure there? What sort of monsters might you insert? (Those medusa columns are quite suggestive, but there's something aboleth-y about those carp...)
I suppose so. If I wanted to set an adventure there, then absolutely. I wouldn't use aboleths. They're too obvious. Maybe... a cabal of slithering trackers?

Hello again James!
This time, a question about Hellknights, and their motivation.
1) Imagine a Hellknight order gains an opportunity to expand their influence and set up in a far away land, known for its "lawlessness" (Brevoy/River Kingdoms in this context). All under the patronage of a local ruler. How likely is that a Hellknigh order will send their Knights so far, and will they even consider it? Is overall expansion of order influence on their agenda?
2) Do Hellknight themselves have some form of a way to create sub-orders, vassal orders, or even new orders in general?
3) How many active members (a guess will do just fine) do orders usually have, and would be willing to spare for an above mention endeavor?
Thanks in advance.
1) This has certainly happened before, and has SPECIFICALLY happened in the River Kingdoms (see Pathfinder Online)... but it's rare. Rare enough that having done it once in the River Kingdoms, I'm not super eager to do it again. But obviously, they'd send plenty of support to that far-flung outpost.
2) Yes.
3) It varies. The smallest order is the Order of the Torrent (of which we'll be revealing a lot more in Hell's Rebels), at a membership of 23. That number will not remain at 23 once Hell's Rebels gets under way, of course. Most other orders are much larger than that, but I don't believe we've published those numbers. That lets us keep the numbers fluid for future use we haven't yet anticipated.

What publications can information about Scuttlecove be found in?
EDIT: Dragon Magazine #355 has a little bit of Scuttlecove content too. I'd forgotten about that one!
Warning: there's a lot of mature content in there. As in violence, sex, nudity, drugs, and all that stuff. It's not to everyone's taste. But I really did enjoy writing it.

Thanks, this should work great as add-in content for an NC-17 Skulls and Shackles PbP campaign I'm running on another site.
Would you have put Scuttlecove on the mainland, near where Port Peril is located, or one of the major islands, like Mokatu?

That's... pretty small. :)
Can you give any more information on the Order of the Scar? (Taldan, anti-assassin, rapiers) I always thought they were the smallest order. Were the Torrent even mentioned in PF #28?
Thank you! :)

Thanks for the answer James. Just 3 small followup questions:
1) Me my guys just love the Idea of Iobaria, the Slavic vibe, and all the fun stuff it may hold. Any hint, will there be a full AP or a guide on that region, anything on that peace of land? I know Reign of Winter has a chapter in it, but that's hardly enough for me, in particular.
2) Will Corel be coming back, and is he really a dragon, or I am free to just think of something fun with him without being afraid to break any future fun when we pic up other APs (quite frankly, I dislike what's happening in Kingmaker)
3) Is there a conon for APs?

If a mythic character with levels in Cleric gain the Divine Source mythic ability, what does that exactly mean in regards to their relationship with their deity? Obviously the cleric wouldn't pray to themselves (I think you said as much yourself), but would the deity act like a "sponsor" for the new quasi-deity much in the way Aroden did for Arazni, Milani and Iomedae? Would they still require the character's allegiance when or if the cleric becomes a full deity, kind of like a saint, or would the cleric-turned-god be allowed to seek their own destiny and build a following of their own?

1) What's in Reign of Winter is all we've aid so far, and we've no plans to do more there anytime soon.
2) Beyond what we've done with him in the last Kingmaker, no plans for him anytime soon either.
3) Ummmm huh? Are you asking about AP canon? If so, then yes... but only for the individual AP. Their canon is self-contained. We do this on purpose, so a newcomer to the game can play them in any order wtihout having to read everything that came before.

You've hit square on the head one of the things that bothers me about Divine Source.
It needs to be an individually crafted response though, hand built by the GM and the player.

Hi James,
Thanks for answering my earlier questions (even if somehow I screwed up the numbering AGAIN...aargh)
Anyway, since the Darklands were brought up, would you be interested in doing a hardcover book focused on that topic? How likely is it that someday Paizo may do such a book?
Of course I'd be interested in such a book, ESPECIALLY (and perhaps ONLY) if I was the one who got to write it.
It's not high on the list of books for us to do though.

So I stumbled onto this thread and tried to find something relevant to my question, but this is a huge thread and the search function didn't really turn anything up.
A couple years back I bought a few different box sets of the Bestiary pawns. The ones that are thick cardstock with plastic bases. I've used them quite a bit since then but noticed something when I opened my first one. There's no creatures in there larger than huge. Do you guys plan on releasing a Bestiary box in the future featuring these larger creatures? Having an elder dragon to throw at my group would be awesome.

As I understand it...
We've looked into the possibilities of doing Gargantuan or Colossal pawns... but that's really difficult. Not only does fitting enough of them on a sheet get tricky... but more vexingly, the point at which the plastic bases shift from Huge to Gargantuan or Colossal, the costs for creating them suddenly take a jump into the point where we'd have to charge more than we think the product could support. SO... it's a physical limitation of the product, more or less. Gargantuan and Colossal pawns are simply cost prohibitive to produce, package, and sell.

Erik put in the Gygax easter egg. I created the Arneson easter egg to match it.

If you worship a Pantheon of Deities, would a worshipper gain the gifts of all of the Deities, or are they still forced to select one as a major focus? (ex: A Cleric from Absalom worshipping the Ascended Pantheon be able to create simple ale or wine, a Cayden Cailean gift, as well as bestowing Good Hope to her allies, a gift from Iomadae)
I am not sure if the gods are okay if someone like to like a bunch of them, rather than a single one.

So I'm confused by anti-paladins of chaotic neutral gods.
I mean, anti-paladins are unable to do "good" since its against their code, but chaotic neutral gods don't care about good and evil and are more about doing whatever they want... At most they'd be against being selfless I guess?
Anyway, my question is: Are anti-paladins of Calistria still required to do evil acts for sake of being chaotic evil?

Question regarding Ultimate Campaign "Bargaining" system
Someone brought up an interesting point that would render this entire system completely useless. And, so, I believe a poor choice of wording was done with the writing of this system.
It's really 3 questions so here they are:
1) Was bargaining meant only for non-magic items or any item?
2) According to the ruling, a buyer can make an Appraise OR Sense Motive check. The system favors one who makes a successful Appraise check on the item, which is not difficult to pass at all (considering if you're selling a high price item, you are definitely dealing with an NPC who can beat DC 25+ easily).
I say it favors the one choosing Appraise instead of Sense Motive because Appraise alerts the buyer to the actual price of the item. According to the rules after that, the Initial Offer is 2 x Undercut Percentage taken off the successfully Appraised price and the Final Offer is the Undercut Percentage taken off the successfully Appraised price. (and Undercutting is always a minimum of 2%)
3) Which price is the value the buyer is looking for when appraising? Example, I have a PC who located a trade agent in town and is trying to sell a Ring of Evasion (25,000gp). Normal rules, he can sell it for 12,500gp. But he wants to bargain a price for it so when the Bargaining rules say an Appraise check determines the item's value, which value are they talking about? The 25,000gp or the 12,500gp? (He's trying to sell it for 18,000gp, so would that be under-value because of the item's true worth or would that be overcharging because of the items value at 1/2 price?)

When adding class levels to a creature with racial HD, how do you calculate wealth appropriate to it's challenge rating?
For example, would an ogre with 2 fighter levels (making for a CR 5 monster) be averaged at level 2 (780 gp) or level 5 (3,450 gp)?
Using the chart near the bottom of this page for reference.
Thanks for your time :)

A cleric (and by extension, a warpriest) can't worship a pantheon, so that's not an option anyway. And since no other class has to pick their class options based on a deity, it's not really an issue there either.

You're kind of right to be confused by them, since they're not that common. Basically, an antipaladin is ALWAYS chaotic evil, and one who worships a neutral evil or a chaotic neutral deity is bordering on heresy. They'll likely focus entirely on a chaotic neutral deity's chaotic elements, or on a neutral evil deity's evil elements, and fill the rest of their personality with their own chaos or evil as appropriate.
Yes. Anti-paladins of Calistria are required to be evil and thus commit evil acts. Not because Calistria demands it. Because the evil part is how they bolster their OWN powers.

Folklore came up with changelings. Wes, I believe, was the one who brought them into Pathfinder though.
Whether or not we do more bloodlines depends entirely on if we ever do more about changelings. I could see us doing a single one of them if we had an unusual changeling in an adventure a LOT sooner than us doing them all for all the options, though.
I can ask Wes to check his thread, sure... but it turns out that he's pretty busy and is more responsible than me and doesn't have time to check the boards that often. ;-)

Those are better questions to be posed in the book's thread. I wasn't involved in Ultimate Campaign's bargaining system at all, and haven't even read it, so I've no insights to offer.

What did you think of the Seeds of Sehan campaign arc?
Also, what's your favorite Paizo adventure outside of the APs?
I was intrigued enough by Seeds of Sehan to greenlight it and approve it for print, so I obviously liked it to a certain extent! I really did enjoy that it took a pretty crazy challenge—make yak folk interesting—and in large part succeeded.
My favorite Paizo adventure outside of the APs, not counting ones I wrote, since that's lame, is Carrion Hill... although I actually wrote a fair amount of that one too, so maybe instead I'll nominate Feast of Ravenmoor, which I intended to write but ran out of time and hired Brandon to do and he knocked it out of the park. Feast of Ravenmoor was based on a short story I wrote many years ago, and it was a real kick seeing Brandon run with what I'd started! He knocked it out of the proverbial park!

I look at the creature's final CR, then assign it wealth equal to what a heroic NPC of that level would have.
So a CR 5 ogre fighter would have 3,450 gp of stuff, which is what a 5th level fighter would have.
I also don't feel enslaved by that. I mix it up now and then, keeping an overall goal of roughly double the expected wealth for the entire adventure in mind.

What IS this Seeds of Sehan thing people are asking you about that you apparently enjoy?
Is it correct that Hell's Rebels will continue the tradition of APs with strong Chelaxian themes (namely Curse of the Crimson Throne and Council of Thieves) taking place primarily within a single city?
Would Kellids use barbed lances and/or javelins, or would they prefer straight points that'd be easier to pull out of a wound?
You think there's much merit to discussing the "orphaned monster" scenario (colloquially referred to as "the goblin baby problem" here on the boards), or do you think when it's introduced in a game it stops it dead as bickering over alignment, hack storytelling and pop philosophy invariably ensues?
Do you think science fiction general sets itself apart from other genres of fiction with an express purpose is to use speculative technology and alien worlds to discuss issues of philosophy and morality? Would that mean that "space opera" like Star Wars is effectively a separate genre, as I'm not sure Star Wars puts as much thought into hard questions like Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep does due to its use of the monomyth for its structure?

I'm not sure that the end result of that would differ much from what I've been doing over the past 10 years, frankly. ;-)
If you remove cost... something with entirely outrageous supplementary stuff would be fun. What Chaosium's done with Horror on the Orient Express is pretty incredible.

What IS this Seeds of Sehan thing people are asking you about that you apparently enjoy?
Spoiler:I get the impression that if I wanna play a god-in-making via Divine Source, I should avoid cleric and warpriest as classes. One of Wrath of the Righteous' traits reveals the PC that has it is the child of whatever deity they worship. Such a character could easily be spun as a nascent deity, as mythology is rife with such people (Heracles probably being the best example). How would a character WITHOUT that particular trait start becoming a god, as the catalyst of being half-divine already isn't there, and the mythic power seems either to come from family heritage or demonic influence?
Is it correct that Hell's Rebels will continue the tradition of APs with strong Chelaxian themes (namely Curse of the Crimson Throne and Council of Thieves) taking place primarily within a single city?

Seeds of Sehan was a 3-part adventure we did back in Dungeon magazine (issues 145–147) that had some pretty off-the-wall featured monsters. Typing "Seeds of Sehan" into our search feature
Yes. Hell's Rebels takes place mostly in the city of Kintargo. It spends more time, overall, in Kintargo than Crimson Throne spent in Korvosa, but less time in Kintargo than Council of Thieves spent in Westcrown. Spoiler for a few more details...
Why wouldn't they? Any reason for anyone to use them is a good enough reason for a Kellid to use one. The Kellids are a very widespread and diverse ethnicity, after all.
I think that it does indeed encourage too much alignment bickering, pop philosophy, and disruptive-to-the-story distraction. If your group gets worked up by this thing, you shouldn't run adventures that involve that content, frankly. There's plenty of other storylines to tell.
That's certainly one thing science fiction does, but the genre's big enough to include space operas or future horror or whatever.

I am not sure if the gods are okay if someone like to like a bunch of them, rather than a single one.
How about feats that are designated to a specific Deity? Can Pantheon worshippers gain Courage in a Bottle (Cayden Cailean feat) as well as Butterfly Sting (Desna feat) if they worship the Standpoint Pantheon, or do the deities still believe that worshiping all of them is still not enough devotion to give these Feats of Strength?

I'd say no. Worshiping a pantheon is not the same as worshiping a single deity, and allowing just anyone to pick one of those specific deity-themed feats erodes the flavor of worshiping that deity. It's not a case of the deity believing anything. It's a case of a worshiper herself being focused enough on the worship of a single deity being appropriate for such a feat.
Put another way, in world, if a character is devout enough to qualify for such a feat, that more or less means by definition she worships that single deity anyway. A worshiper who only partially venerated that deity would not qualify nor would she consider that feat an option.
