Bonjour de Nouveau, Jenny.

Hopefully, you've found these boards to be helpful...and more than a little crazy at times - especially on the other thread.

Anyhow, how's your foray into Pathfinder going? Figure it can't be any more rougher than Rolemaster. Appréciez-vous votre jeu PBP?

Nessa's axe is neat, but I thought that helm was cool too - it gave Nessa that 'stern' look.

I still have the helmet Alex!
actualli i have both Agrona and Nessa costumes
well not Agrona s sword that was a loaner from a friend!

about pathfinder i m still trying 2 make my way thru the rules and character creation!

Hey, sorry I never got back to you on that, busy couple of days … BUT, I’m very pleased to see you’re joining a new play by post game using Pathfinder rules, very cool!

Just be warned, play by post games are not for everybody – if the game itself doesn’t work out, that may not be a reflection on the Pathfinder rules, but more on the nature of play be post games. I love play by post, I’m playing in and GMing a number of them here on the boards, but they can be really slow … and sometimes, through no real fault of anyone, the games just die. But I do hope you have a lot of fun with yours, and your new rogue character, and that you get to give Pathfinder a go with your real life gaming group too.

Cheers!

Welcome to the posts Jenny. I hope you have fun with the PBP you are in.

Whoo-hoo! A fellow Canadian.

Welcome to life on the Paizo boards Jenny. Here's hoping you have a lot of fun in this hobby of ours.

If you have questions about any aspect of the game, chances are you will be able to either find the question already asked and answered already posted by someone else, or you can find lots of help from the various people here. Keep in mind that not everyone will have the same opinion on the topic, but that does keep it interesting around here. One of the things I like best is the people at Paizo keep a fairly close watch on these boards and are active participants in answering questions.

Anyways, again, welcome and have fun!

Pathfinder (like D&D 3.5e before it) has great flexibility but that in someways is also it's weak point. No real reflection on the gamer designer make making so many "moving parts" balancing rules out so character A is as useful as character B is/was almost impossible. You will hear lots of talk of "builds" in Pathfinder - meaning which feats/classes you take as you progress. I suggest (at least at the onset) ignoring advice in this area. Read the rules and choose the things that scream "my character concept". Might not be the best character mechanically speaking, but if you like the character, then it's a good character.

You won't believe the hassles I got for making a one armed human fighter whose favoured weapon was the morning-star... For a game that depends on imagination, you may be shocked at the lack of imagination some people can show!

Luck with Pathfinder,
S.

PS: When you read the rules on Clerics you will see they only start being able to wear Medium Armour. This caused a massive outcry from the boards, people complaining that Jason (the writer of Pathfinder) had destroyed the Cleric class. I think it's ironic that in your "character photos" your "fighter-type class" is definitely not wearing heavy armour yet no one on this board seems to be complaining at all. Go figure. Double standards? Sexism? I wonder.

PPS: Ah, your character is a barbarian! Still not withstanding my above comment holds true.

PPPS: Ok, thinking about it, perhaps your "armour" as a certain distraction effect. <Orc charges you>. <Orc> "Grrr, die barbarian woman! Ah, would you look at those..." <Noise of half-naked barbarian woman stabbing distracted Orc in the throat>. Ok, Jenny you win, carry on.

;)

Are you sticking to Rolemaster? wow what an intense game to start with;

here are some of my favorite classes:

Houri; this is a great character. Great spell lists that are deadly and fun; good price on adrenal moves and with Deadly Kisses list your character can really fight; but with all the charm and mind control stuff; you can sit back and watch two guys fight over you if you want as well. This character can be hard for some GM's to keep up with; but is one of my favorites. I played mine as a whirling dervish from Araby and dressed her like the princess in Aladin. Its always nice to have a few puppydogs or kitty cats <people> under your thumb and dance, baby, dance. and ..ahem... you never lack for money if you into that sort of thing.

Archmage: This is a great character if you have great spell stats as you can pick any like five or six spell lists and make them your prime lists. With this character, you can make a very versitile or very specialized character with you choice of the best spell lists in the game. I had an Archmage say "I can do that" after any situation or someone cast a spell. Drove people crazy; they called me on it once; "you cant do that" but lucky for me; that was on my list and I could; hehe. If you take this character; make sure you take a combat list that has lots of instant spells or the fight is likely to be over before your done prepping a spell from a regular list. If you like lot of combat spells then just play a Warmage as they get better weapon costs for one weapon; so do that rather than an archmage with lots of warmage lists. With this character you can pretty much create any type mage you want from any book or theme.

Bashkar: having a non spell character gives you a lot more skill points. This one is a beserker; give him a two hand sword or axe or whatever <I pick with the lowest fumble range>. This guy tears through enemies; well, to be fair; then tears through everyone else, so take lots of perception. If you GM allows you to pick rather than randomly roll backgrounds; which is an option; there is a choice as a background option to take one spell list 1-50; so you can pick one list that this guy or any non caster can use; this can make these non spell guys really really neat. You dont have to play him like your celtic guy; though you could. I played mine as a low civil servant in the judical system; was a torturer; road around on a cart with a rack; thumbscrews and all kinds of torture implements. I would show up at the local constable and if they had guys in jail to be hung; I was the legal representative that hung em; cut heads off; gave lashes; or whatever punishment the court decreed. He went from town to town as smaller towns couldnt afford a full time guilded torturer; so just like district judges travel from town to town; so did this guy; lot of fun.

Paladin; great all around guy; you end up spending all your skill points on move in armor for various types and in your weapons; but you get some really neat and helpful spell lists and all your base lists rock. You might not be able to cure all the bleeding that happens in the game; but your are a great healing battery and sencondary healer. This is a pretty good healer that can fight; sorta, I was always standing after a battle; but killed less and did less damage than other melee guys; and really; nothing beats a true healer class.; but this is a good class and your banish and exorcism can really come in handy and stuff from the spellbreaker lists. If you gm has a particular religion you want to expose; this is the guy.

as for survivability in RM or SM for that matter; it is all about exerience; those crits can kill you sure; but high armor values and high defenses are very helpful to bring down crits; sure anyone can be one shotted with a good enough roll; but with either enough armor or adrenal defense; it is less likely. Make sure you can do some damage no matter what you play; better to roll the crit than take the crit roll.

One reason I like the Houri; is that character can make enemies fight each other over him/her as the prize. better for them to crit each other than you.

That HOURI class sounds like fun!

SOLNES: i know about deviantart some friends of mine post there (like Armando!) yur right its a great place!

Hi Jenny, I have been playing D&D all along and can give you a little direction. Everything used to be Races and Human Classes (long ago) now everything is about Feats. So open the book to the middle and look for feats table and fing some interesting ideas from the ones indented farthest to the right. This will help you choose your class, your class will carry skills--pick a focus. That is what your character will be best at. Now find where your greatest advantage in ability scores will be and pick a race that carries a bonus there--assuming the class is allowed. Now roll your scores (this is all backwards but works well) and put the highest 3d6 out of 4d6 where your greatest advantage is. Now choose equipment while envisioning your character in action!

The Houri class is loads of fun; lol. In that game you get like a +30 or something for spells you cast while touching; it doesnt have to be a kiss; but most people cant resist a beautiful person anyway; the spells make it over the top; which I like.

Need a thug for a task; buy him a beer, or find one shopping or drop something on the street in front of him or some little thing; thank him and give him a nice hug and whisper in his ear; bam; chances are he is your slave for a while. Got friends in jail that you need to influence some jury guys or the judge; hehe or the clerk <their easier targets> just wink and smile and their putting in your hands.

got someone you cant affect; well; closeby there is probably someone you can.

They also have that cool spell; you two fight over me; that is handy if your captured, if you need a distraction in a bar, wherever there is groups.

Kisses that stun; kill; enslave; sheesh. Dances to change your face; your body; heck even your sex; become the guy or girl of your targets dreams.

This character was way fun; take martial weapons to add to your dances and your a fighting machine as well.

Be shy or wanton; this character has it all. If your naturally a flirty person; this character is for you; its all about expression; so if your a player that sits back and lets other do stuff; a character with this class wont shine.

Scarab Sages

I'd check with the GM and other players before running a Houri; not because of the overly sexual nature of the class (since your group is already used to you, LOL), but because it can be potentially annoying for one player to be dragging round an army of lovestruck henchmen, stopping the other PCs from being in the spotlight.

Same goes for a necromancer with an army of undead, or a druid with a zoo full of animal companions.
It can get boring if you're the guy who resolves all his PC's actions within a minute, then has to wait half an hour for his turn to come round again.

An 'enchantress'-type can be worse than a 'beast-master', since as well as resolving the henchmen's actions, you get dragged into debates about 'Would he really agree to do that?', and 'Would being asked to do that give him a new saving throw?'.

If the others aren't happy, offer to let them run a minion each, make rolls for them, make decisions for them, how they can best interpret your commands. Then everybody can share in the fun.

Snorter wrote:

As someone whose highest level character is a fighter in a game with a certain druid, I can vouch for that, [vent]I wouldn't mind so much if they made an attempt to be efficient with their army of minions, but they insist on rolling *one* attack at a time!!![/vent]

With Rolemaster, or Spacemaster for the matter, it takes such an investment to create a character that you really aught to find one you really like, I wouldnt worry about other players; they aught to be able to find there niche. In our game when I played a Houri; there were two nightblades and a dancer and I forget the class; but it wears demons like armor think it was chaotic lord and I think someone was gypsy. Limelight was share by all. Course, gm killed me off with a magic ring that choked me to death and it was the only magic item we ever found; so, maybe my take on it is way different from others.

Another really good class is Monk; most of your spell lists are all instant spells; have a list full of evasion type stuff to stay alive and one of the best healing lists in the game; plus you get a good sensory list for vision and hearing and another for movement. I always like the Dervish also; kind of like a houri without the sexy content.

Nightblades are like magical assassins; i think they are probably the most popular class in the game; every group I played in had at least one; some had like 3 or 4 which is why I never played one, but they are pretty cool.

A Rolemaster Monk was my first RPG character EVER. Like Jenny, I've got introduced to the RPG world through Rolemaster. Must be a Quebec thing...

Couple this with the first post of this thread that she's had 3 chacacters die fast and I'm glad Jenny is looking at Pathfinder instead.

Or thet groups here in Quebec tend to try many games. My introduction to RPGs was the good old AD&D, but we did pick up and get a roll at most of 'em. What killed Rolemaster for us was the complexity of the rules (sooo... many... tables...)and the sheer evilness of the crit system. Gosh, one of our melee combatants got one-shoted by a bunny. A bunny damnit! The DM could only explain the crit as that the bunny well, liked nuts.

Anyways, with all the games we tried, our staples always stayed D&D, in its various incarnations, and Shadowrun (with the occasional foray into Call of Cthulhu, GURPS, or the original (french) version of INS/MV.

In any case, welcome to the world of gaming Jenny. I'm sure you will like Pathfinder. It is very well conceived, and the base setting is rich, deep and colorful, while somewhat dark and "mature".

That being said, don't be afraid to try out new games and settings. There are many gems out there, and you might find one you like even more, for varied reasons. For instance, D&D 4th edition does have its appeal, mostly simplicity and balance. The flipside is that the rules are obviously geared towards combat, and there are very few out-of combat effective powers. But it does'nt hamper the Roleplaying part, as you don't need rules to do good roleplaying.

I have played more game systems than I can remember; like playing a toon that is involved; usually in intrigue. Most games have that built in.

Same here, I have recently been thinking about all the games I have played and... well it is a really long list and I am not sure if I am not forgetting some of them.

Welcome to Paizo, Jenny.

Based on your alias' character background you are off to a very good start in playing Pathfinder. While crits happen, you come across as a player that very much enjoys getting into character and simply enjoying the time with your friends.

One thing to keep in mind as a roleplayer - your characters are ways to explore doing things without trying to really do them. Say, selling an entire orphanage into slavery or establishing a "flower shop" or dance studio or what have you.

Above all else, have fun, what ever game you play!

Turin

I just read your character background, and this is a very well written backstory. It is interesting, and leaves a ton of hooks for the DM to exploit (hehe) - a dead scion of a noble house will raise some questions for sure. I really have to say, I´ve seen long time players with worse stories, and I tip my hat to you in that regard. Most of all, happy gaming and a good time.

Stefan

Alternatively you could play a half elf Paladin carried around in a Cage by the Farmers who own you (Normally they kill Plague elf but as a Paladin to their god of Agriculture you are of value). As your primary power would be a detect evil, you become their way of exterminating the forces of darkness.

You are right though Jenny; Rolemaster can involve a high body count as things become fatal very quickly. This can mean not getting to attached to ones character :(

Pathfinder, and by extension D&D, tend to be far more forgiving.

That said, it just depends on what you like.

Firstly, Holy Crap!!! Where the hell were women like you 24 years ago when I started roleplaying?

Now you have made the leap to Pathfinder (aka D&D 3.5e+) from Rolemaster.

Are you playing yet, or still learning/making characters? I'd like to hear your thoughts, as a self-confessed newbie, on a certain pet-hate aspect of "modern" RPG's of mine. I won't mention the aspect until you start playing.

Cheers, and your (incredible) physique aside - well done on the character design and development. I'm jealous as hell, I'm sure we all fondly remember being that way when we all started RPGing - character first, rules second. It's sort of like believing in Santa.

S.

PS: If you ever feel like inventing time-travel and going back to the early 90's let me know so I can post a suggestion on a location for your first trip back in time... ;)
