I can joke, but the reality is, one of the places we've talked about moving is central Jersey. Princeton and Rutgers both offer the program I want for grad school, and my partner is become an Italian teacher, which are in high demand in New Jersey.

I've heard (and seen on TV) that lots of Jersey is pretty nice. There are parts that are kinda awful or rundown, but lots of it seems to live up to the Garden State moniker.

Maybe the anti-Jersey propaganda was created to keep New Yorkers from moving in? :)

Well, the internet is being contrary, so it took me a while to see these. Yeah, it was the Jersey comments. As you guys probably tire of hearing me say, except for the high cost of rent, I really liked central Jersey, both Princeton and Rutgers. Nice little town and lots of countryside, orchards, farms, vineyards. Just avoid the turnpike, and such places as Newark, as much as possible. And you can take day trips to Philly or Manhattan or the shore.

Good point, Ambrosia. I have no problem with NYers, but they have a terrible attitude when it comes to Jersey. Plus, the concentration of population is already high enough.

I have heard some really good things about Jersey, and met some real nice folks, but like New York, the people from the city of the same name have been less than polite, but that is only my experiences.

I think the reputation comes from New Yorkers. For the most part, the New Jersey they see is Newark and the surrounding area. It doesn't create the best impression.

I've heard nice things about most of the state as well.

And don't forget, I'm from upstate New York, which is a hole by any standard.

I spent several weeks at Fort Dix. It is really pretty around that part of the state. Hiking fifty miles a day, I saw a lot of it.

Sorry, M. I'm being statially insensitive.

My only experience with New Jersey was when my family was going on vacation to Maine, and as we drove up I-95 in the morning, the sun shined through a rainbow-like fog. It was kinda eerie.

You think upstate NY is a hole? I'm trying to remember what all I've seen...Albany, Cooperstown, and that campground where you can dig for gems. It looked like mountains and woods to me...loved Cooperstown.

There's nothing to be sorry about! I just have a soft spot for Jersey...probably not many Texans will tell you that.

Rochester is probably one of the better cities, although it does have mile upon mile of abandoned industrial sites.

Try driving through Utica, or even Buffalo for that matter. And check some of the small towns in the Northeastern part of the state, or along the southwestern border with Pennsylvania. Houstonderek and Shiney will attest to those small towns being frickin scary.
