So: who plans to buy?

Alpha Release 2 General Discussion

1 to 50 of 238 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | next > last >>

I am well aware that when someone starts a discussion with, "I am not trying to be a ____, but" it usually means they are, in fact, a ____. I hope to be an exception.

I don't mean to be a spoilsport, but how many people on these forums, or who are among the 15,000 downloads of Pathfinder Alpha 2 so far, plan on buying the release product?

I am generally pleased with everything I've seen, and I can't think of a single change I dislike. However, it's one thing to see Pathfinder (or, for that matter, Dungeons and Dragons 4) as an improvement over what is currently available and another to consider it such a notable improvement as to be worth a purchase.

For the sake of the gaming industry in general, and the obvious hard work of the people at Paizo in particular, I hope my discussion is met with dozens or hundreds of pledges to purchase the finished product. I just want to be honest - I like it and I like it more than DnD 3/3.5/what I've seen of 4, but I don't like it enough to buy.

Scarab Sages

I've preordered the hardback. First preordered book ever for me.

Scarab Sages

I'll definitely buy the Pathfinder Beta (already pre-ordered), and the final Pathfinder product next year. Even if there are updates not to my liking, it will still be better than both current 3.5 and 4.0. Based on my liking for Paizo's work in general, starting with the Shackled City hardcover, I can't imagine being so dissatisfied with any aspect of their 3.x update that it would keep me from wanting to play the final version.

Edit: I'm also pushing Pathfinder RPG on my players, emailing them small chunks of updates and letting them know when each new Alpha version is available for download. They're probably getting sick of hearing "Pathfinder Alpha!" from me, but I work hard so they can have fun so on this one they'll just have to deal ;)

Scarab Sages

I will buy it once it is available at my game store or via amazon and I'm sure at least 4 books will be bought by members of my gaming group once I own the book.

Dark Archive

I absolutely will be buying it, and there is a good chance I will by the beta as well. The PRPG is the best thing to happen to D&D since 3.5 came out IMHO. There is even a chance I will be buying multiple copies so I can introduce some friends to the game by giving them the core book as a gift.

Absolutely.

I'm definitely buying. Before the Alpha release I was burnt out as a DM, and let another member of my group take over for a bit. Playtesting sessions have sparked my interest in sitting behind the screen again, gotten the blood up, and I'm having a great time.

The very fact that Jason and the other great people at Paizo are willing to allow us an active role in the development of the product, and actually let us see what is going on, goes a long way for me.

Liberty's Edge

My wife and I already preordered the beta softcover for 2008 and the final Hardcover final in 2009. So I'm ante'n up. Suggesting to my players they do the same.

As I don't plan on going to 4e, and there won't be other 3.5 material out there, I'll certainly be picking it up. I don't know if I'll be buying the beta as it will still be a free pdf, but the hardcover will grace my bookshelf as soon as possible. Given that all Pathfinder material will be converting to PRPG in August 09, I won't have much of a choice, since I don't plan on canceling my subscriptions any time soon.

The Exchange

I pre-ordered the Beta and plan to preorder PRPG after I get that. Probably gonna get 2 at least just to help Paizo some, and I plan on buying everything PRPG related afterward also.
I am trying to make Paizo strong. Maybe strong enough to make WotC sell the D&D license and maybe strong enough to buy that license. Of course the build up will take a long time but you gotta start somewhere.
'Help us Pai-zo, you're our only hope.'

As it looks now probably not for a good while. Most o f the changes are either not that good or just things that were all ready in 3.5 (I'm looking at you Sorcerer).

Now that I am finally making and saving money, I will certainly pick up the HC, and will get 4th edition too.

Dark Archive

I'll get beta.

Also, the final product next year.

So far, I count 8 Superscribers, if that means anything.

I guess it will mostly depend of the quality of DnD 4E... The books will be on the market 2 month before the Pathfinder Beta release and I don't see why I would like to go back to 3.5 if 4.0 resolve my main problems with 3.5 even if Pathfinder is a lot better than core 3.5 ...

I've got a copy of the Beta preordered, and two copies of the hardback preordered. :)

I count 21 Hardcovers pledged for so far. If you post, why don't you add to the number so we get a running tally.

Liberty's Edge

22. I can't grok pdf's so well.

I already have mine preordered (Both Beta and final) and we will more then likly by a second for our group as whole

26. I will need at least three copies. One for my side of the screen and two for the players.

27. that's in about an hour of counting.

had to edit to correct count.

I've pre-ordered both and my whole group (5 more) will be buying them as well. I can hardly wait! :)

I've got mine already pre-ordered. I'll be honest, though. I don't know just how much of it will be replacing 3.5 in my games and how much of it will just be used alongside 3.5 material.

Definitely planning on purchasing both the beta and the final book.

Dark Archive

I will buy the beta softcover (it's just sitting in my cart; as soon as the D3 pdf is released, I will checkout and make a proper preorder), and I plan to buy the hardcover, possibily in multiple copies - I'll have to talk with my players and friends about that.

I've already preordered the Beta and the final hardcover, so count me in as well. Can't bloody wait!

38 I guess - I pre-ordered the beta and the final book as soon as they were announced.

The Exchange

I will buy. I've had my Beta AND my release hardbounds preordered for quite some time. I have three more hardbounds I am going to need to get for my kids ...

I am probably more of a fluff guy than a mechanics guy, and I *love* the fluff. The art, the characters, and the "feel" of the game bring back a love of roleplaying for me that hasn't been here since I cracked open the Player's Handbook way back in 1978. I honestly feel that everything that I want in the game (the feel, the flavor, the sense of created by loving and respectful hands) is all here.

How can you NOT want to buy it? :D

oh - and 39, 40, 41 and 42 ...

I'm buying both the Beta and the Final versions, because I think the project merits financial support and because I don't actually own the 3.5 WotC books. I'd rather my dollars go here.

40. Preordered 2 betas and 1 PFRPG. I'll probably pick up additional copies for my players (since most of them are minors.)

So am I 45?

I actually will probably only use bits and pieces of the rules rather than the whole thing, but there's enough that I like that I'm willing to give them money for the work. It may be more "Thanks for doing this work, here's some money. Oh, look, I get a book for my donation!" mentality, but with how useful the bits I plan on using will be to my enjoyment of the game, it's worth giving them some money for it.

Plus, as a freelance writer hoping to use these rules in my writing, I'll take it in PDF and hardcopy form since both are useful depending on where I'm working at the time.

Haha. :)

I didn't realize until I read this that there were going to be two different books, so reading comprehension-- on me I guess.

Now that I have, "yes" on the beta. I really like the product so far, as seen in alpha, I like that Paizo's staff opened it up for discussion and playtesting, and I want to see the somewhat-finished version they come up with.

I personally hated that Wizards released "preview" books like Races and Classes, so I think it's awesome Paizo has enough confidence in their product to release the beta as a free pdf while also offering the option of a really reasonably priced softcover. A pdf on the computer just doesn't compare to a real book in your hands.

As for the hardcover version, I want to say "yes", but the answer is really "it depends on how much I like 4e". I'll be honest and say that while Paizo is my favorite D&D publisher by far, I'm intrigued by 4e and will buy it when it comes out.

If I switch to 4e, then I won't have much use for it, even though I will still buy the adventure paths and companion books, no matter what edition they are, for the high-quality settings, ideas, artwork, etc.

I have to add that while I understand that publishing quality books takes time, I wish it was the hardcover, finished version of Pathfinder that was coming out this August. Right now, 3.5 is still my system, and I know Paizo will make it 10x better. But by next August, 4e will have been out more then a year, and if it's fun, I'll have a well-established game going for that.

I wish my answer was a little more gung-ho, because I do think Paizo releases the best D&D stuff out there, but there you go.

41. You can count me in for a copy of the final version, can't wait!

45- I'm in.
EDIT: wait, what? what number are we on now?

Liberty's Edge

I will absolutely be buying the final hardback and probably will by the beta as well.

Like someone else said, if you are not going to switch to 4E, how can you NOT at least pick up a copy??!!! Remember, the 3.5 ooks will no longer be available or supported ....

No way. Even the alpha version is too far beyond 3.5e for my tastes. Some of the changes are interesting, but most are simply unnecessary. I wanted fixes for a couple of minor bugs and that's all. I won't be buying the Pathfinder RPG for the same reason I'm not buying 4e.

But at least Paizo didn't diss the gaming community like WotC. For that, at least, I'm grateful.

49 and my buy makes 50...I think...

I just canceled my 4e pre-order and pre-ordered both the Beta and final.

3-4, depending on the size of my gaming group at that time.

Welcome aboard.

I think that's 50 by my count. EDIT: 53 now

I have pre-ordered 1 copy of the soft cover beta, and will use that and the pdf's to discuss options with my group (me the dm, 6 players, 2 occasional fill-ins).

I will buy at least 2 of the hard cover (me and a spare).

If my group does go PRPG, that is 6 more copies. Based on what I have seen so far and knowing my guys, we probably will.

I will be purchasing both the Beta rules and the final version.

I like many of the changes being introduced by the Pathfinder RPG and will most likely buy the product. I expect that at least one member of my gaming group will also buy it and perhaps more. If I do buy it, it will be my first purchase from Paizo. Up till now I have been exclusively a WotC D&D customer and if I remember correctly I have never bought a third party product before. With the advent of 4E, however, this has changed. 4E is making both rules and flavor changes I dislike and does not feel like D&D any more to me at least. Seeing the quality that Paizo is putting into the Pathfinder RPG and the fact that they maintain D&D flavor, I may well buy more Paizo products in the future.

I think this whole process is very interesting. However, I won't be buying the final product. If I wanted talent trees, I'd go with 4e.
I'd like to find someone who is fixing the bugs in 3x instead of independently replacing it with a 4e knock off.

If the price was right (i.e. closer to $30 than $80 [Canadian]), I'd buy it. That could change if they started adding stuff I really didn't like, but I haven't seen any "deal-breakers" so far.

I'm in.

Actually likely to buy 4 copies of the Beta & at least one of the Final.

So...I don't know what that does to the counts...Sorry.
