Zigel and Karrin:
** spoiler omitted **

I thought we would. Karrin wants to the city and Zigel so far seems to know the most about it so she concocted this little errand to get a guided tour. Besides a disguise kit could come in handy at some point . . . a false mustache is sure to throw a stalker off the trail. :)

I love playing Karrin, she quite the change from Tristan Lidu, and it's fun playing a character that's deceptively stupid.

Sovereign Court

Male hu-man Paladin

In case you missed it Karrin is afraid of devils. Go figure huh? Raised in a lawful good monastery, she was taught about good and evil, heaven and hell, and without any sort of actual knowledge of the planes she has all sorts misconceptions. Karrin is very much afraid devils leading her into temptation . . . she's probably unsure how they'd go about doing that, but she's afraid of it non the less.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Guy you are doing a masterful job with Karrin. I could see she was terrified, and Veria is a lot to take in for a young woman fresh from the Prime. As I said before in the main thread, if the current post doesn't meet with your approval, please let me know and we can retcon the encounter. Karrin is obviously wary (rightly so!) of the erinyes, and she should have the option of rebuffing her entry in her personal space.

Sorry, Ffethpaar, Greep is a bit intimidated by your claws and teeth and he is used being in the backgound shooting instead of melee. Once he knows you a bit better he will be honored and eager to spar/bond.

(Aren't double standards fun? greep- troubled by 'offputting' and yet Ffethpaar=scary. Someone should point this out to the G., he'll be surprised.)

He would be overjoyed to spend time on the shooting range with his team/kin. If we have time before Patrick launches the adventuring.

No, everything looks fine, the only thing I'd contest is her getting between Karrin and the door, as I imagined Karrin with her back to it. Karrin is a complete 'noob' when it comes to the planes so this sort of interaction is actually what I was hoping for.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Niel, you can head back to the Silver Rose for some sparring practice if that is your wish. Ffethpaar and Renakr are sparring. If you ask nicely Mercutio might act as a mobile target holder for your practicing

the disguise kit can be found on PG 130 of the PHB and costs 50 gp.

Thanks Guy, I will read up on it tonight. Assume you have gotten that item gratis from your new friend (?) Veria.

hopefully you won't have to babysit Karrin for much longer. She's smart, and she's a fairly quick learner, and so the language will come soon enough. Sorry if Karrin is a bit needy right now . . . but hopefully she'll get on her feet soon and Zigel will be able to do his thing more. :)

nah its a lot of fun taking zigel down paths i had not thought about . already this games is great fun karrin is a fun pc to interact with and the whole veria thing . man was that fun to make a speech for. great fun.

To the players:

I just want to say I am very pleased by the level of interaction and roleplaying you have all done. I wanted to have you explore Sigil a bit before we got down to the adventure, and you all stepped up beautifully. We will be underway with the shakedown adventure soon, but feel free to visit anything else that is in the Cage.

Again I also want to thank you all for coming up with the NPC seed ideas, it has really helped me craft individual story arcs for the adventurers.

I'm not surprised. You're really doing an excellent job providing detail and background, but that means a LOT of typing, and even if you enjoy writing/storytelling it can be overwhelming! Great job BTW.

Maybe when the team reassembles you'll have less work :)

husband half Italian Expert 15 (carpenter 5/ gamer 5/ reader 5)

I recommend microwaving a damp towel, then wrapping above and below sore area (fingers). When towel cools, reheat and repeat. This can be improved if you have one of the commericial heatable pads for muscle/joint aches.

Another traditional remedy: "Soak it in cider."

Have a rest, dude. We're cool.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Ehh, I am good. I am enjoying the posting, even though I am trying to keep Sigil as 'canonical' as I can, which means scouring my reference books. I wanted you all to explore Sigil, to try and give your characters a sense of it. I am also trying to build up your attachments to the NPCs you had suggested to me so as to have story arcs on hand for later. As soon as we get together the main work will be done. Then comes the next hurdle, coordinating PbP combat!

May I suggest using party initiative. First guy to post after combat is announced rolls for everyone. Others just add their init to the base roll. Initiative order is always the same. It really cuts down on confusion.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Oh he11s yes! A very good tip Kruelaid, thank you. Sigh, I have to get off to work, but I am busy planning the first encounter, hopefully we can pull this off.

For Seeker

Spoiler:
Hey man I was hoping you could help me out with something. I need to whip up some stats for Hanali, but I am starting to get swamped up with the story, and the mechanics aren't my strong point anyway. She is rapidly becoming more than just the secretary I had first envisioned, and I'd like to include her in your adventures. If you could, stat her out with resonable/high stats (like a 34 pt buy). Don't forget that she has a fairly high CHA score (15+) and is more DEX than STR or CON. Give her 2 levels of Monk and 2 of Rogue (I know monk isn't Pathfindered yet, but I trust your mechanics interpretations implicitly.) She really doesn't carry weapons, but she has two ornamental hairpins that are designed to act as daggers.

Thanks Seeker, you're a lifesaver. She's actually Aasimar with elven ancestry (1/2 elven, 1/4 human 1/4 Celestial of some sort). I would focus on the Aasimar side more than the elven side, but feel free to use aspects of both.

More fluff for the fun of it:

Coinage in Sigil:

Being the Hub of the Multiverse, Sigil is innumdated with coins of every description. One thing a Planetar and a Pit Fiend can both agree on is that gold is valuable. That being said, most merchants will accept any coins offered, often keeping a scale on hand to get a measure of the weight of the actual metal. Also, the Guvners run a mint located in the Lady's Ward near the City Barracks (and well guarded at all times). There are several coins they manufacture.

Copper: aka: Greens, bits, coppers, pennies. These coins are the lonely stepchildren of Sigil's coins, much as the penny is today in America. The high price of living and availability of specie guarantees that this coin will not have much buying power (unless you live in the Hive). The Cant nickname of 'Greens' came about from the verdegris that forms on these coins in Sigil due to the atmosphere and the acidic secretions of some of the resident's hand oils.

Silver: aka Stingers, quads, silvers. Silver is usually the smallest coin you do actual business with in the Cage. They are called 'stingers' in Cant because silver can harm so many Lower Planes denizens that they got this nickname. Quads comes from an old practice of splitting the coin into four pieces for smaller transactions (now rarely done) Note: Among some fiends it is VERY insulting to offer them payment in silver, akin to giving someone poison ivy as a houseplant.

Gold: aka Ladies, Jinx,. The main coin of business. Called the 'Lady' because of the stylized Lady of Pain inscribed on its face. (not too lifelike, no one wants Her Serenity to get mad about graven images!). Jinx comes from an old superstition that gold is an unlucky and evil metal, 'tempting' cutters into bad deeds.

Platinum: aka Merts, plats. Sees a lot more action in Sigil than most other places, just because prices are so high. Merts comes from Mertion, the Platinum Heaven.

Mithral: aka Hammers, Brights . This coin, 50 gp value, is used primarily on large cash transfers. Getting change for this can attract unwanted attention from Knights of the Post, so peery cutters don't flash these outside a temple bank or a mercantile office. They are called hammers because they are actually minted by dwarves for the mint in another location, and have the hammer of Moradin inscribed on them. Brights because they have a very impressive shine to them.

BTW- I meant to report the results of last weeks super battle. As you may remember, I used our group for inspiration for an encounter in my bi-weekly Mutants and Masterminds game.

I had to adjust the group when I arrived at the gamestore (where we play) as I found out that three of the seven players had to work unexpectly. (Seven is really too many players, but attendence has been spotty enough that it has been managable and I had a hard time telling friends 'no' when they asked to join the game.) I dropped the Greeper and lowered the morale of the local contact who had joined the team.

The battle went pretty much as planned. The heroes had to reach and guard a specific spot. They used illusions to hide their approach, but kept the same illusion in place once they stopped, which gave them away. My villians went into action, shutting down the heroes communications and attempting to pick off the heroes, one by one.

Part of the background story is that the villian group is being controlled and is not happy about it, so they did not set up auto-kills in their ambush.

The players, while initially startled and annoyed by the array of attacks, eventually turned the battle around and, once they realised what was happening, managed to capture their attackers.Of course, by then, half of the heroes were unconcious- including the over-confident and self-proclaimed invunerable brick.

The heroes retreated through the dimensional gate, taking the Rosa Argenta with them. In the new dimension, both teams will be out of reach of the master villian, and freedom is assured. (With perhaps one more confrontation between the teams to resolve their rivalry.)

The campaign is nearly over, so I am attempting to talk some of the players into switching over to playtesting Pathfinder. As I do not run a D&D game, can anyone reccomend some of the Paizo modules for me to run for them? I'd like some low to mid level stuff until the beta rules get here, and don't want to take them thru one of the adventure paths. Any suggestions?
thanks,
niel

So did Bizaro Karrin kick butt?

Bizarro Karrin did indeed kick butt. My version of her was a sword and shield wielder (I was short of female-with-great-axe figures). When she teleported in and attacked with sword, they were relieved when the damage level of her weapon was low- the the carrier attack went off. She was able to blind one hero and nullify the force field of another. How they had to scramble to keep her from getting a second shot in on either target! They're next plan was to blast her from range- until they realized she could use a held action to redirect the blast her shield absorded. Since Karrin was after a capture, she shifted her attacks to the heroes radiation controller rather than take out the hero leader, but she was eventually double-teamed by two blasters and knocked unconcious. In the eventual rematch, she will be able to take advantage of what she learned about the heroes and I hope to set her against the hero leader/illusionist.

Kruelaid- I will get a copy of D0 and D1. I already have a copy of 'Carnival of Tears', but I don't think it would be a good playtest for my group of players. They would concentrate on the horror, not the rules. While my wife really liked it (she's a Ravenloft and horror fan), the adventure seemed to me to be too much of a test of the character's character rather than a test for the character.

niel wrote:

Well D0 and D1 are fun, but they did need some modification (The monster density was just whacked); but best of all they set up a nice location, had great NPCs around town, and we just sort rolled a long freely. I ended up adding a lot of detail to the town. You can just download D0 and print it, and you'll be finished by the time D1 arrives.

If the Players were getting into it you could run carnival, or just switch in some other small town stuff.

There are lots of possibilities.

Arctaris had to bow out because my game is running a little fast for his schedule and he feels pressured.

You were interested, so I am asking you... but then that was before you started your own.

Fake Healer offered to take the spot and has the time but I just asked him to wait for me to check with you, first.

I have been a lurking on yer game thread and I love it! BUT ... yeah I am feeling a bit stretched right now, and with my increase of job responsibilities with the dawn of Spring here in New England and the uptick of household chores I don't think I could do your game justice. Let Fakey take a swing at it. If anything else happens or you need a walk-on NPC or something I'll take a crack at it, but right now my dance card is full.

Kruelaid: If you like zombies, do pick up World War Z. It reads like Studs Terkel writing about the aftermath of a George Romero film. Scary stuff that the matter-of-fact reporting makes you sit up at night and shiver. Really realistic (as far as zombies can be). Also, should you ever run a game, D20 Apocalypse has stats for viral undead. A game like that would rule.

K folks we are on the cusp of some actual adventuring here! (YAY). I know the game hasn't had a lot of action yet, but I wanted to spend a little time 'setting the mood' as it were. I think you are all doing a great job with the characters so far. Hopefully we can get this ball rolling soon and you can try out all your shiny combat skills (after trying out your sleuthing skills first!)

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I've never seen the excitement of WoW but a couple of my players love it (I think I've the only one at my table that hasn't tried it). I've been DMing long enough to realize that different aspects of the game are entertaining to other players. Some people love the idea of building, others the art of design, some love combat, and me I'm a bit of a story junkie. The real trick to DMing is seeing what players want and then mixing your game to give people what they want.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

It's all good Niel. I'm glad you stepped into the WSI thread. Saurig is a good persona, no problem with the contact angle, not like you guys will run into Traveller Smurf in Sigil either (I may be gonzo, but there are lines you just don't cross). I'll be happy to roleplay away in the Copper Cauldron until we can all get together and move out, it makes the time go by, and when we get to the actual combat everyone will feel like they are running real people rather than piles of stats.

Saurig is the perfect fit then. Cheers had 11 successful seasons without any action, it was a great show, and I think the World Serpent Inn could easily run months without the slightest hint of action.

Absolutely Guy. I am just a bit burned out and bitter from the whole MMORPG scene. I went through two different ones for about 5 years (EQ&WoW) and at the end, I looked back and said, "Is that all there is?" Hundreds of hours of playing, fighting, dealing with the vagaries of getting a group/raid together, guild politics (GROAN) ... it finally just struck me as hollow. But you are right, a good DM plays to the players. One reason I wanted NPC seed ideas is they give me a chance to involve you guys in the world with NPCs that YOU want to interact with. Anyway, I'm ranting. I've been having more fun typing in these boards than all the whizz-bang graphics in WoW ever got me.

Even with the right role players I think you'll find a dialogue strong pbp needs a good scrap every now and then.
