I hope they write it so that guys like me who never read legion; or havent read it in like several decades; can pick it up and be introduced to the characters.

I sure hope they do a better job than Marvel does with their attempt with their title; Guardians of the Galaxy. I read and collected a lot of those, but the story was fairly weak and hardly kept my interest.

I am of course looking forward to your game; oh wonderous Prophetess

One of the more interesting aspects of the Legion of Super-Heroes was the fact that they had tryouts, especially in the early days. Many individuals applied but few were accepted. Perhaps that's what my game needs; Legion Tryouts.

Are you talking about Guardians now or Guardians from the early 90's? Because that last book put me to sleep, this new one I can't stop reading.

I'm surprised they aren't a part of your game already. That's one of the things that scares me about the new Legion though, considering DC fans reputation for hating new characters.

My apologies Freehold DM, but you misunderstood my statement. In this case I meant Legion tryouts as in PBP playtesting. I was fishing to see if any interest existed.

That's one of the things that scares me about the new Legion though, considering DC fans reputation for hating new characters.

Regarding Legion tryouts in the comic. In the past (a few decades back anyway) DC introduced new characters such as Tyroc, Wildfire, White Witch, Blok, Dawnstar, Chemical King, etc. The ones fans greeted warmly were kept for the long haul, those that didn't grab the readers interest were removed from the Legion roster (Tyroc I'm looking at you!)

I think if they a strong negative reaction over a new character or how one of the old characters are presented, I think DC is to the point of making changes for the sake of the fans.

Remember the Legion Outpost? Let's hope it makes a comback as well.

Hey, cool, we just started our 32nd page.

hehe that is a thought; can I be a founding member who gets to judge? Cool; rational; Brainiac :) I remember them giving Bouncing Boy a rash and him feeling to inadequate to be a member; then he became the leader and brought hope to and organized all the alternate heroes; I liked his story.

Not sure if your serious or not?

EileenProphetofIstus wrote:
You said it all Aaron. Glad to hear your a Legion fan. How extensive of a collection have you acquired?

I'm not at home right now to count, but I'm sure I have more than 40 issues, most of them dated from the 1982-1984 period.

EileenProphetofIstus wrote:
You got any favorite characters?

Maybe... Wildfire? At least, I often find myself wishing I could see him in action more often in the book. Mind you, one of the great things about the book is seeing the members act as a TEAM. I don't like the issues that focus on just one character.

EDIT: Oh, also I'm a sucker for really ALIEN aliens, so I like Tellus and Quislet for that reason.

EileenProphetofIstus wrote:

Yes, that WAS one of the book's charms.

EileenProphetofIstus wrote:

Yes, sometimes when I had to wait in line, or for some other reason had nothing to do for a while, I would amuse myself by thinking of Legion tryout scenes.

(And imagine my surprise later, when I read the second "Showcase Presents" volume, and found that one of my "reject" ideas had actually been written!)

Sure; I am serious; even when I am not hehe or was that "sure I am serious; except when I am not" I never get that right; common among efreetis.

Well if any one else is, I'd like to hear about it. The majority of the combat chapter needs some playtesting. If something got started the focus would have to remain on roleplaying and combat in order to catch some serious glitches. I'd also like to see how the multi-character issue goes.

Other issues would require glossing over (such as space combat) such rules will most likely be a year away.

EileenProphetofIstus, now you've made ME curious. How extensive of a collection have YOU acquired? I'm guessing hundreds of issues.

Aaron Bitman wrote:

Now you got me curious. let me go count.

Let's see I've got 22 graphic novels, some which are new stories others which are reprints; I've got all 12 hardcover Legion Archive books which gives me the complete collection from 1958-1977. I have another 619 comics or so which includes the continuation of the Archive books on through the re-boots and Legion stories put in other comics like Action, Justice League, old Adventure comics from the 1960's, Supergirl, DC presents, and so on.

Rough guess is about 750-775 or so, this would be an attempt to subract duplicate stories. Anyway, that's about the best I can figure.

Hey, cool, we just started our 32nd page.

It's interesting, because IIRC they killed off Chemical King but Tyroc simply "Went back to his home planet". He had a few appearances in Legion of 3 Worlds, I think. What was the issue with Tyroc again? I remember they tried to start a "Someone on the Legion is racist!?!?!!"(Sun Boy, maybe?) as the storyline surrounding him and his planet comprised solely of black people who removed themselves from society a la a Ray Bradbury(was it Bradbury?) novel, but I'm not sure if I'm remembering that right.

Holy cow. That's about twice the figure I was expecting.

I've never seen the Legion story you describe, but I think the Ray Bradbury story to which you're referring is "Way in the Middle of the Air," which first appeared in "Other Worlds (July, 1950), and which appeared in The Martian Chronicles (although it was eliminated from the 2006 William Morrow/Harper Collins reprinting.)

Thanks for this. Why was it eliminated from the 2006 printing?

Come to think of it, I guess my "Showcase Presents" volumes must include almost 100 Legion stories, so if you count those, I have about 140 Legion stories.

Freehold DM wrote:

I don't know for a positive fact, but I feel safe in assuming that it was due to the story's political incorrectness. I know that Bradbury got complaints about it.

Damn, that's a shame. I will have to check that story out, it's been years since I've read an excerpt and may have to familiarize myself with it again if only to see what the hubbub's about.

Yes the Showcase books would cout as many, these are the black and white versions correct? I think they cover all the same stories as the archive comics. Are there 4 Legion Showcase books? I assume they begin with Adventure Comics #247. What is the last story printed in them?

Yes.

There are 3. Number 4 is scheduled to come out later this year. Amazon.com should have it available on September 28.

EileenProphetofIstus wrote:

Yes.

EileenProphetofIstus wrote:

Adventure #368 (missing Mordru's first appearance by just 1 issue, dagnabbit.)

Yes.

And after I went and posted that, I actually thought to check my facts... and I'm surprised. According to the Wikipedia, the Archives edition reprints something from Superboy #124, and Showcase Presents doesn't.

Tonight, I intend to look up my Showcase Presents volume and see if Superboy #124 is truly absent. And if it is, I wonder... did that issue have something Legion-related?

(Showcase Presents DOES have Superboy #125, which introduces Kid Psycho. I don't want you to think that I'm confusing 124 with 125.)

Okay, now I get it. 124 has Lana Lang first becoming the Insect Queen. It IS in Showcase Presents; the wikipedia entry is in error. Nevermind; Ignore my last post.

As your new president....

Thanks for the kudos folks, but it was from a link I got a few topics down. Still, this is quite a windfall. Now I can see what was up with that Tyrok thing.

Ok, great intro speech Freehold DM, but want we want to know as the new Legion leader what are your going to change? Serious questions have been raised that need addressing.

1. Should we put a cap on the maximum number of hours Brainiac 5 spends in his lab. Late at night I hear all sorts of strange sounds coming from there with an occasional manical laugh crying "Success, Success!.

2. When the next furlough schedule come out?

3. R.J. Brande just gave us another 30 million credits, how do you suggest we use the money?

4. Isn't there something you can do about Infectious Lass. The guy Legionnaires keep dating her but then they call in sick the next day. It's getting to be a problem.

5. What can we do if the crazy wolf guy comes back to the thread again? Are we able to authorize genetic experiments between him and the Efreeti? Should we? What are the possible outcomes?

6. I've also got three individuals who want to try out for the Legion. You need to schedule some try outs.

Oh boy. Heavy is the head that bears the duly elected leadership position.

1. I'm going to see if I can get Element Lad(Alchemist) and Tyroc(Tyroc) to sound-proof the lab. Again.

2. Furlogh? Didn't they cancel that comic years ago? I'll have to check with that warwoof fellow...

3. Economic stimulus money! It must be spent wisely. NO, Sun Boy(Inferno) we do NOT need extra survellance of the female Legionnaires living quarters- what's that? A stalker of some kind? Well, I'll have to think about it then...

4. *sigh* Not again. Guys, if you are going to date Infectious Lass(Infectious Lass), then you're going to have to be extra careful and- NO, not that kind of careful, Tenzil(Tenzil). Geeze. I'm going to have to have Brainy(Brainy) set up that "High School Gym Class" trideo again, aren't I?

5. Speaking of Brainy, he did mention something about success with fire breathing wolves...I'll have to check with him. Or maybe White Witch(White Witch), since they can grant wishes too?

6. That's a good idea, but I think we've been a little too distant with our tryouts in the past. We got lucky with the Subs, and far too many of the LSVs are rejects from our trials for our liking. I say each of us act as mentor for a potential recruit and bring them here when they are ready for a tryout. If they make it in, cool. If not, feelings aren't hurt as bad this way, and we can either put them in the Academy for more training or perhaps shuttle them to the Science Police for whatever they're trying to put together over there for metas, aliens, and what have you. Sounds good?
In other words, I want to see everyone's homebrewed characters!

PERSONALITY QUALITIES
Public Image: As/9
Secreted Playfulness: Ex/7
Self Sacrificing: Su/15

pUBLIC IMAGE
Area: Honor SSM: +10/category

The character places considerable value on their public image. When this quality is selected by a Legionnaire, they not only concern themselves with their own image but that of the Legion as well and they feel the Legion and all of its members should do their best to serve as a positive role model for all.

When dealing with the public, the character normally receives a +1 bonus for every three categories they have in this quality when dealing with the public or other public figures. Whenever there are damaging occurrences to the individuals’ public image or those they represent, the character attempts to improve upon that damage. This may result in the character electing to take a particular action, make a public apology, gives their personal word of honor that the situation shall be rectified or some other improvement to the damaged image.

Legionnaires with this quality include: Saturn Girl/As/9

SECRETED PLAYFULNESS

Area: Romance & Love SSM: -5/category

Individuals with this romantic quality share many exciting moments with their lover; though such times are always spent in great secrecy. Should any of the characters romantic encounters, preferences or details be openly revealed, the individual suffers considerable embarrassment.

Should a character become embarrassed as a result of this quality, the Representing Player must make a d20 roll. Any result equal or less than the character’s category indicates that they are embarrassed but not to the extent of it affecting their social capabilities. A die roll exceeding their category number always results in extreme embarrassment.

When this quality is first selected, the Representing Player must determine how their character reacts upon extreme embarrassment. Typical reactions include hostility towards the person they blame for the exposed secret; walking out of a room and making their displeasure known even breaking down and crying. The selection made is the manner of roleplaying the Representing Player undertakes at the time.

If the information revealed about the character is particularly harsh, the Cosmos Master may impose a category reduction to the character’s Secreted Playfulness quality; thus increasing the likelihood of failure.

The duration of the character’s embarrassment usually lasts for the remainder of the action sequence. Depending upon time lapses between sequences or the degree of embarrassment, the Cosmos Master may require another d20 roll to be made in order to determine if the character continues to act accordingly.

Legionnaires with this romantic quality are: Saturn Girl/Ex/7

SELF-SACRIFICING

Area: Honor SSM: -30/category
The character is willing to make great sacrifices in order to save their teammates. Anytime a great impending doom arises at which the cost of a character’s life may well be at hand, the individual elects to make the sacrifice.

Each time this personality quality comes into play, the character adds their category number to any die roll made in which the Cosmos Master feels could be the big moment of sacrifice. The Cosmos Master may declare more than one life or death moment based on the circumstances of the situation; in each case however, the character applies their bonus to the die roll. Characters that have any remaining uses of their Luck trait may combine that bonus with their self sacrificing die roll.

In the event that the Representing Player elects not to make the sacrifice, the Brande Account suffers a -100 point deduction. Depending upon the current point value of the account, this could result in a negative balance.

Characters with this personality quality include the following individuals: Ferro Lad/Ex/7; Proty 1 /Av/5; Saturn Girl/He/10.

I'm thinking something is up. Either he is switching servers or he has been served himself. Neither of which is good. I hope to hear some news on this front soon...

In other news, the middle of Power Girl #11 made me weep with joy. We're back starting next month, towards the middle of May. Three guesses why I'll be getting the collector's edition...

Yes new Legion comic coming out. I can't say I know any details but I suspect one way or another it won't be a reboot but rather picking up the original Legion right after the Legions of 3 worlds mini-series we had last year. Is that the same impression you guys have?

I haven't been on the site for several days, but I sure noticed that were having issues today. Still working on the game.

Book is currently sitting around 140 pages with still a lot of information that is started but not complete.

Looks like the Legionnaire Commlink Rules Players Guide will be about 200 pages. I can see I'll need to make another book in order to get the rest of the player information out, so I need a new title. Any suggestions?

The second book would primarly encompass player campaign information, such as the Legion Headquarters, basic information about the U.P. the Science Police as well as the Legionnaires character sheets and origins.

Very much the same. I'm glad that they aren't rebooting or killing off the universe or doing anything that might be misconstrued as "stupid". We all have our universes we love and our universes we don't, and the Legion fandom as a whole is so diverse that one man's meat is indeed another man's poison. I'm literally dying to know

Spoiler:
who the GL Legionnaire is...I've been aching to see the image of a GL ring and a Flight Ring next to each other for YEARS!!!!

I say take a page from the Mayfair DC Legion RPG book and make the second book a "Fan Guide" to the Legion, a VERY tongue in cheek "Who's Who" in the Legion. Base it off your favorite sports team's brochure, the thing they give away for free when you go see a home game.

Not a bad idea. That just made me think of "The Legion Outpost", taken after the comics in hte 70's/80's where they placed fan mail and answered things Legion related. Your thoughts?

Yes new Legion comic coming out. I can't say I know any details but I suspect one way or another it won't be a reboot but rather picking up the original Legion right after the Legions of 3 worlds mini-series we had last year. Is that the same impression you guys have?
Very much the same. I'm glad that they aren't rebooting or killing off the universe or doing anything that might be misconstrued as "stupid". We all have our universes we love and our universes we don't, and the Legion fandom as a whole is so diverse that one man's meat is indeed another man's poison. I'm literally dying to know ** spoiler omitted **

If memory serves, your first or second post on this thread brought up the GL corps, which had happened in my "20 YEAR GAP". What I still don't get though is how he joined the Legion when his power came from a device, or did they change the Legion Constitution on that rule? Was he a honorary member or full-time member?

It's an easy argument to claim that Wildfire's powers "come from a device", since he's not much more than a floating blob of energy with an attitude whenever his containment suit gets breached.

I'm all for it. That was a strange title for their letters column though...

Hey may have been an honorary member due to the bad rep of the GLC at the time in addition to the source of his powers. I'm not a fan of that part of the constitution, I will move to amend it.
