So, who else went into the realms of the absurd with me and posted a big time item? I tossed out a cool 245,000 g.p. value with my submission. Did anyone actually top that, or did I push the theorhetical limit of what common sense would dictate should get sent in?
Nope, I guessing that you pretty well surpassed it. We'll find out for sure on the 28th.

I had some high priced items (including a suped up version of the one I actually submitted), but I ended up deciding to go with a version that was ~11 000 gp.
Its "cheap" enough that low-mid level groups could use it, and hopefully versatile enough that even a high level character would want to keep it around.

my submission was priced at 16000. it fits into the 'one in every party' range of 12-18 grand, like boots of speed, monk's belt, +4 enhancement bonuses. it is also cheap enough for a party to pitch in for if they want, and expensive enough to make for an investment in its very unique (and i hope popular) ability.
my first thought to submit was another item in that range. i think that's a pretty safe range for most hard-to-quantify items, since wondrous items are harder to price than anything else.
here's to the 'next great black-artist' (note avatar above).

I figure mine was about 1.4 million.
It only did 2 things but it did them all the time. I realised the cheaper aspect was just a weaker version of the top one so I removed it. Then I went through the list of items and figured it should probably be 200K. I didn't start out to have a near artifact level item but considering the idea I had it turned out that way. The price of a continuous 8th level spell I guess.

Holy Bag of Holding!
What the heck did you do?Mine came in at right around 10k without using any racial,
class or alignment restrictions.
Isn't anything above 200k getting into epic level anyway?
On a semi-related topic, I've seen dozens of posts where people voice concern over getting the price correct. I've read the rules a dozen times over, and it seems pretty straightforward to me, am I missing something that makes it more complicated?

While I applaud your "Holy Bag Of Holding!" (made me laugh), I must say that maybe some of us (or at least me) tried to make an item and realized that it didn't have the effect of a specific (or combination) of spells already known.
If items are priced based on spells usually, how could we know how to price it? And even worse yet, I started using a caster character 2 weeks ago, realising that I don't know how to handle those hocussy-pocussy characters, nor the cost for those things. Going straight back to my roguey (rogue, spellthief or scout) characters.

Well, again maybe I am oversimplifying, or maybe I've just never designed something that falls outside the parameters.
But p 285 of the DMg (table 7-33)
pretty much covers anything - or close approximations thereof, some items don't work out quite right, but most items (at least the ones I've checked do).
Also as I understand it, Table 7-33 is in order of application, that is, if you have an item that duplicates a spell effect, (such as a glove of true strike) you would go down the list, in order to find the best fit before resorting to spell/caster level cost.
So an item that duplicates a spell effect that grants an AC bonus would be costed as an AC bonus, not as the cost of the spell/caster combination.
I'm not trying to be a smart-mouth here, I guess I am just trying to understand what types of items are difficult to price? It could be that I just haven't been creative enough to come up with something that doesn't fit somewhat within these parameters.

The biggest question with valuing wonderous items (in my opinion) is utility over cost. Sure you could fork out say 32,000 for amulet of natural armor +4, 36,000 for cloak of cha +6, and 98,280 for, say, a ring of spell storing (not a wond.item I know!). Or you could pay up around the 300,000 mark for a single item that does all of the above, freeing up two, possibly three extra slots for additional items. With the added bonus of a 'rare/cool' item, many a player will opt for the more expensive option.
The old phrase 'better poor and prepared, than rich and dead' is something I like to drum into my players. Frequently. :D

This would be a real pain to price properly.
So it's got some animate objects, some continual flame spell ability...
Two characters can man it to get AC 20 and Atk +12 melee (2d8, 2 pincers).
(there isn't a guide estimate for what you should do when it requires 2 characters to use).
It requires a Search DC 20 to locate the opening hatch. Normally an item that requires a skill check to use calls for a 10% reduction in price, but this skill check really only needs to be done once, since once you know where the catch is you shouldn't have to find it again...
It's stuff like this that becomes difficult.

Definitely a bad idea to say a specific price, since it compromises anonymity, but I figured my price based on the guidelines, then lowered it a bit when I realized that my device had somewhat limited useability. Rather than crafting some uber-powerful death-kill device I went with a neat piece of glitter that would actually be used in a milieu where magic was common. It was also something that would have come in handy once or twice in my campaign.

I tried something simple (1 ability, 8K, always on), but spent my 200 words explaining why it exists in the first place and works like it does. Hopefully this tactic works. That's the skill you need to actually carry through and write an adventure: things that make sense as part of a big picture.
If I get selected, the next submission will be the country the item was from, then the owner of the item, then associated beasties, and finally the proposal that they all fit into.
Or I'll go back to writing horror supplements. Sigh.

That was exactly my plan too but I liked my item and it didn't really fit with the country I was thinking of using so now I'm just kind of winging it.
