Dr. Dei...sounds like a Bond villain.

Congratz!

Congrats, Dr. Dei!

This last year was really a lot of work but having my PbPs for distraction and Paizonians for company helped me to get the work done without getting lonely or crazy so thanks gang.

Cool man. What was the subject of your PhD?

Congrats Tarren!!

Congratulations on the PhD!

Good news on The Mad Island of Dr. Keegan:
After a freaking year of commuting, broken up by a few weeks of subletting and dog-sitting, I may have a permanent room lined up for January, assuming I can get a look at it and it's legit.

I try to be polite and not answer that question because, you know, it puts people to sleep. ;-)

Spoiler:

I wrote about nationalism in English as a Second Language textbooks. It was a provocative thesis and sure to alienate every one who could possibly ever give me a job I'm qualified for.

Actual quote from the thesis defense: "Much better than a PhD in physics. I mean, MY GOD, those are boring!"

WIN!

Are we allowed to read said doctoral dissertation?

I got a new t.v. The old one was dieing.

My wife tried playing Elder Scrolls, and the screen was so dark, her character used all his torches walking around TOWN in the DAYLIGHT.

All is goood in the world now.

Scarab Sages

I finally got HD Tv to go with my 40" LCD.

I'll be bottling my second batch of beer soon.

Christmas is coming.

I really liked Elder Scrolls... then I bought the next game in that line, Oblivion. Also a great time.

THEN I bought a 61" 1080p TV (probably already outdated) and the clarity on Oblivion actually hurt my head. I had to make the screen less resolute just to enjoy myself.

I think plasma screens mess me up even worse... headache-wise. Dunno why that might be. My eyes seem fine. Mebbe I need to have the peepers checked.

I find most of my clients have HD TVS and HD cableboxes, and aren't using HDMI cables or the proper settings, even years later. I had my TV for a year before I actually got it to HD for me, dern it.

If your picture is squashed, or clipped, it shouldn't be. The problem is often on the cable box settings and not the TV itself.

How are you enjoying your system?

I have a lot of problems with photosensitivity. There's nothing wrong with my vision, I just see best in the semi-dark. I joke that I have low-light vision. (My husband says that it's not a joke. He is totally baffled by strange statements like "don't turn on the light, I won't be able to see to read.") In order to play Oblivion, I have to turn the lights all on to the point that is physically painful until I start looking at the tv. That seems to override the headache sufficiently.

Sweet, a large TV for Xmas its a great gift... too bad that would require a brand new gaming console and lots of hours on it... mmm.... I'll better stay away from the electronics area at Costo... *shakefist*

I'm the same way, reading in light that makes other people want to turn on the lights. Their idea of bright enough to read by is my idea of a police interrogation.

Thanks for the tip on how to survive looking at Oblivion! It really does make me feel better knowing I'm not the only one out there with that oddness. I have so many oddnesses. ;)

I'm loving it so far. We had them install the HDMI cable, and it looks great. We have Comcast, which doesn't have as many HD channels as I thought it would, but the ones it does are pretty cool.

One of the first things I watched in HD was the Giants/Redskins games this past Sunday. Talk about a difference!

Ok, I read something about these in the news recently. This realtes to Australia but could apply to the US as well.

Apparently you can get these ranging from about $50 to a couple of thousand. Generally, salespeople will tell you that the ones that are a couple of thousand are much better, but (according to the article I read) this is not the case. The cable either does the job or doesn't, so if you can buy it cheaper, do. Apparently a lot of people are being ripped off by this.

Still, I wouldn't take my second hand advice on it. Maybe try shopping around, or asking some tv or electrnoics expert (who doesn't have a stake in selling you anything) their opinion.

Liberty's Edge

That's what I was figuring, but it's like there's nothing on t.v. any damn way but people on islands being backstabby b~$~%es and stuff, so I couldn't give a crap.

My new t.v. though--wow, what bad complexions they all have. Dayum.

Ha! I normally really dislike "reality" type tv shows, but I have to admit with shame that I have a weakness for that one.

Especially after the first few weeks when all the old and ugly people are voted off (and my tv isn't good enough to tell that the young, good looking ones have bad complexions).

Liberty's Edge

I like that Rudy guy; I watched the first series with the nekkid gay fat guy and then the allstar where they didn't have fire to boil water, and they told them there was brain parasites in the water, and not to drink it...but Rudy said to hell with it and drank the water cos he was a Navy Seal and he drank weirder crap than that before.

Liberty's Edge

I never watched the first season, but I think I watched that All Star one, I remember that bit.

But yeah, kind of have to agree with you with the current one (well, the one we’re seeing here currently anyway), there’s more than a fair share of backstabbing b~!&$es. Narsty.

A 6' HDMI cable can be picked up online for $11 (I listed a really cheap place in another thread months ago) and it'll do the job as good as an $80 cable. There's debate among philes based on the science of it all but I defy anyone here to submit to a test and notice a difference.

Get the cable though... it is so worth it.

Liberty's Edge

Thanx!

I trust you; regardless of the fact that an $11 gamble is better than a $100 one, (which is what Circuit City was trying to sell me...I think it was an "HDMI" cable; I could be wrong. OOOG! Zog make fire!)

I went to buy the t.v. at Circuit City, seeing as I felt bad they were going bankrupt. Then I got there, and they tried to bump me up....3 times....3 times in increments of $100....then I walked out and didn't feel quite so bad for them no more's. Just....take the money I'm here to give you. Figure out how to take the money, man. Don't shake me down for more. It isn't there.

End of rave.

I was watching an HD episode of Law and Order the other night, and my wife walks in and says of one of the actresses: "Wow, look! She has a pimple they tried to cover up with make-up." Creepy!

Audiophiles can't tell the difference between monster cable and a coat hanger.

This excerpt cracked me up:

"Not a single one (of ten self professed audiophiles)) was then able to tell the difference between the Monster Cable and the hangers, and all agreed that the hangers sounded excellent."

I wish I could have that test go down... especially the reveal:

"This is the best cup a joe ever!"
"Why we've replaced your coffee beans with rabbit turd!"

Ordering the present that my son has been begging for for the last four months. Yep, all he wants for Christmas is "a stuffed green cthulhu and a sled." And I just ordered the cthulhu. I had to go with the puppet since the regular plush is on backorder, but I don't think he'll mind.

How old is your son, Lynora, to want a Cthulhu plushy ?

He's five. I bought a My Little Cthulhu for a birthday present for a friend of mine and ever since he saw it he's been obsessed. When he sees that I am on the Paizo site he comes and sits beside me and begs to see the pictures of the cthulhu plush.

Scarab Sages

My meeting in D.C. went well yesterday. Not only did my presentation get some kudos, but so did my entire branch. Huzzah!

Congrats, Aberzombie. Good things in DC:

Basil Thai in Georgetown

My screen name or my real name? IRL, I was named after a character in Doctor Zhivago. My parents intended to call me Lara for short, but somehow it ended up as Rissa instead. I haven't read any books with a main character named lynora.

I do like lynora, but I was talking about Rissa. Yes, there are a series of Sci-Fi books with the lead character named Rissa.

Edit - F.M. Busby wrote the books.

Yeah, my two and a half year old loves the My Little Cthulhu (or Coolu as he calls it) when he sees it on the Paizo main page … his mother doesn’t seem to think its an age appropriate Christmas present however … maybe for his birthday next year.

The Cthulhu itself it totally fine for a little one, although I think not before age 3. But I would suggest removing the My Little Victims. They come apart easily and could pose a choking hazard. In addition to being, you know, a wee bit gruesome for a toddler.

Hey, gruesome can be good. I was raised on original Grimms' Fairy Tales, and I turned out FINE.

...

Actually, disregard that. Gruesome is bad. Yeah.
