I am an alumni of the U of W and might be able to help you out by giving a good word. What kind of graduate work are you looking to do?-Lisa
I'm seeking a Ph.D. in Computer Science. And I appreciate the help, but the U of W already denied my application for this fall, and I figure that you'll certainly have the job filled by this time next year. (Or even by December, when the application for Fall '08 would be due.)
Also, the job description states that is may be more than 40 hours a week. While I'd be perfectly happy working longer hours for a company as cool as Paizo (in a city as nice as Seattle), that does make it rather incompatible with pursuing a higher degree simultaneously.
I wholeheartedly thank you for the offer of support, and I will have to keep it in mind should I ever try to transfer to the U of W in the future. It has been said many times in the last few months, but I would like to thank you, and all of the Paizo staff, for your and their contributions to the community here. How many companies has CEOs willing to do favors for (potential) job applicants?

Singular: Hippopotamus
Plural: HippopotamusesFor Greek and miscellaneous roots.
Hippopotami is an acceptable english pluralization. Unfortunately, no grammatical rule is absolute in our language. So while generally the conventions of greek and latin roots are correct, applying them universally is as flawed as universally applying 'i before e'.

I hope this does not unduly irritate anyone.
Singular: Alumnus
Plural: AlumniSingular: Radius
Plural: RadiiWhere the roots are Latin.
Singular: Hippopotamus
Plural: HippopotamusesFor Greek and miscellaneous roots.
[Pedant] If you're going to by hyper-correct, shouldn't it actually be alumna in this instance? [/Pedant]
(As, as far as I know, Lisa Stevens is a woman)
:D
What's the internet law which says that any post correcting another's spelling or grammar will itself contain at least one such error?

I know! If only I knew Java (rather than 8 years of Microsoft stuff) and hadn't just settled the family into a new house, I would be all over this.
Well, it turns out that knowing Java is not the major qualification for this job. The major qualification is "smart, learns quickly and gets things done."
When people talk about "knowing Java," they're usually referring to the language, plus all the various libraries. Normally, that's just the standard java.* classes, but we don't use any J2EE or servlets or JSPs or the rest of the ordinary "enterprise Java" stuff.
We use WebObjects and WireHose, and a few other open-source libraries for reading Excel files, generating PDFs, etc. Learning all of those -- especially WebObjects -- is a significant learning curve all by itself. And then of course there's the 40,000 or so lines of code in our repository. So we fully expect to have to do a lot of training to get someone up to speed.
Any long-distance telecommuting possibilities? ;)
No. Everything's behind the firewall, and you have to actually be in the office to get anything done. Plus, it's a lot easier to just turn around and say, "Umm, Gary, just what were you thinking when you wrote this?" :-)

I learned BASIC on an Apple II in 1982 in high school. I think.
Well, my first computer program was, what else--a character generator!
Then I took a class in C++ a few years ago when I finished up my degree.
I was voted the "King of Syntax Errors." While I still got a "B" in the class, I then realized that my computer whiz days were long over and now I was just another user.

I'd love a job at Paizo...but I don't know if they need someone with my rarefied specialties. What do you say boys?
The wierd thing is; I can't read any of her posts without 'hearing' her voice (same goes for a few other regulars, too...).
Does anyone else remember the Cadbury's Caramel Rabbit...?
"Hii there, Mister Mole. Why're you always bizzying around? Take it eeeeaaasy, with Caaadbury's Caaaramel....."

Run your cursor over the Jezebel link to see who "she" really is. You might rethink what you hear. ;)

I've thought about applying, but I'm not sure if they could make it worthwhile for me.
(Not that I have that high of an opinion of myself, I just already have a decent paying job, and my commute would go from a 15 minute leisurely walk to an hour long drive from hell. :/ )

Gary Teter wrote:Turns out I suck at not finding extra hidden hours in the day!Sounds like there's a Catch-22 there. The whole point of hiring someone (as I understand it) is so that you're not as overworked. But you can't hire anyone because you're too busy.
We've noticed this phenomenon. Which is why we like this thread. Maybe somebody will notice it, and solve all of our problems!
