Paizo Employee CEO

If Paizo has some ins with the University of Washington that I don't know about, this would be the time to tell me.

I am an alumni of the U of W and might be able to help you out by giving a good word. What kind of graduate work are you looking to do?

Don't tempt me!

I know! If only I knew Java (rather than 8 years of Microsoft stuff) and hadn't just settled the family into a new house, I would be all over this.

Any long-distance telecommuting possibilities? ;)

I'm seeking a Ph.D. in Computer Science. And I appreciate the help, but the U of W already denied my application for this fall, and I figure that you'll certainly have the job filled by this time next year. (Or even by December, when the application for Fall '08 would be due.)

Also, the job description states that is may be more than 40 hours a week. While I'd be perfectly happy working longer hours for a company as cool as Paizo (in a city as nice as Seattle), that does make it rather incompatible with pursuing a higher degree simultaneously.

I wholeheartedly thank you for the offer of support, and I will have to keep it in mind should I ever try to transfer to the U of W in the future. It has been said many times in the last few months, but I would like to thank you, and all of the Paizo staff, for your and their contributions to the community here. How many companies has CEOs willing to do favors for (potential) job applicants?

I hope this does not unduly irritate anyone.

Yes, I'm that guy.

Hippopotami is an acceptable english pluralization. Unfortunately, no grammatical rule is absolute in our language. So while generally the conventions of greek and latin roots are correct, applying them universally is as flawed as universally applying 'i before e'.

[Pedant] If you're going to by hyper-correct, shouldn't it actually be alumna in this instance? [/Pedant]

(As, as far as I know, Lisa Stevens is a woman)

:D

What's the internet law which says that any post correcting another's spelling or grammar will itself contain at least one such error?

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32

That law is unnecessarily specific. While it is true that any post correcting grammar will contain at least on grammatical error, it is merely because correcting posts are a subset of all post, and any given post on the internet will contain at least one grammatical or spelling error.

Well, it turns out that knowing Java is not the major qualification for this job. The major qualification is "smart, learns quickly and gets things done."

When people talk about "knowing Java," they're usually referring to the language, plus all the various libraries. Normally, that's just the standard java.* classes, but we don't use any J2EE or servlets or JSPs or the rest of the ordinary "enterprise Java" stuff.

We use WebObjects and WireHose, and a few other open-source libraries for reading Excel files, generating PDFs, etc. Learning all of those -- especially WebObjects -- is a significant learning curve all by itself. And then of course there's the 40,000 or so lines of code in our repository. So we fully expect to have to do a lot of training to get someone up to speed.

Ken Marable wrote:

No. Everything's behind the firewall, and you have to actually be in the office to get anything done. Plus, it's a lot easier to just turn around and say, "Umm, Gary, just what were you thinking when you wrote this?" :-)

I used to be a computer whiz, back when people said things like 'computer whiz.' But I don't imagine my command of BASIC for the Commodore 64 has much application to the position.

I personally think the last two lines in our code should be:

494650 GOTO 10
494660 END

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

No way.

Our source code should read:

10 PRINT "Gary Teter is awesome"
20 GOTO 10

(At least that's what it was in the local Radio Shack in 1978....)

Ah the good old times of the TRS-80... :-)

Oh, the TRASH 80 was a fabulous computer ... you could drop that puppy from the top of stadium bleachers and it would still work. That thing was the workhorse at newspapers for a good long time, even after other laptops started appearing on the market.

Can I then say, "I'm smart, I learn quickly and I get things done."? :-)

Ummm. Yes. But, you know, a resume helps too. :-)

Already sent one, I guess I just figured you would look at the name attached to the subscriptions... Eric Wisdahl

I learned BASIC on an Apple II in 1982 in high school. I think.

Well, my first computer program was, what else--a character generator!

Then I took a class in C++ a few years ago when I finished up my degree.

I was voted the "King of Syntax Errors." While I still got a "B" in the class, I then realized that my computer whiz days were long over and now I was just another user.

Liberty's Edge

In one of my classes in college, I only attended three classes all semester. It freed up more time to concentrate on things I wasn't good at doing. Like Physics. And Calculus.

Run your cursor over the Jezebel link to see who "she" really is. You might rethink what you hear. ;)

I want to replace the Golem as the new face of Paizo, the Paizo Parrot! Brawk...after GenCon...brawk...after GenCon (wink, nudge).

I'll never feel clean again...

This is a bit of a necro, but was the software job ever filled?

If not, why not? For instance, was it because no one applied, or because no one met the qualifications?

According to this, no.

I've thought about applying, but I'm not sure if they could make it worthwhile for me.
(Not that I have that high of an opinion of myself, I just already have a decent paying job, and my commute would go from a 15 minute leisurely walk to an hour long drive from hell. :/ )

There's no chance you need anyone in Australia, is there?

Maybe I could open a local branch office?

Sounds like there's a Catch-22 there. The whole point of hiring someone (as I understand it) is so that you're not as overworked. But you can't hire anyone because you're too busy.

We've noticed this phenomenon. Which is why we like this thread. Maybe somebody will notice it, and solve all of our problems!

Liberty's Edge

You all heard it from Vic himself.

If you're interested in the job, just hire yourself. Show up to work on Monday morning and start giving Gary a little help.

It'll show initiative, too.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32

For Paizo, that'd be win-win. Because then they wouldn't need to put you on payroll.

Until the new guy takes a bit too much initiative and deletes everyones pathfinder subscriptions.

Scarab Sages

I think they need to hire me to review all their products (all received free of charge, of course...).

I think we urgently need a review of the new Warhammer 40,000 RPG.

DeadDMWalking...funny, that's pretty close to how I got a job at Hastings a few years ago...

Sczarni RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

Well, I sent in an application. So if Gary would ever get back to me. . . ;)
