Paizo Publishing Creates Strategic Alliance with The Order of the Stick Creator Rich Burlew
Paizo Publishing to become the exclusive sales agent for The Order of the Stick
September 30, 2005 (BELLEVUE, WA) Paizo Publishing, LLC, publisher of the officially licensed Dungeons & Dragons gaming magazines Dragon® and Dungeon®, and the premiere e-commerce site for all things gaming, is pleased to announce today that it has entered into a strategic alliance with Rich Burlew, creator and owner of the wildly popular roleplaying comic strip The Order of the Stick (OOTS) and his company Giant in the Playground Games.
The office has been buzzing about The Order of the Stick ever since Rich started to put his strips up on the Internet, says Lisa Stevens, Chief Executive Officer of Paizo Publishing, LLC. We all love his work so much that we approached Rich at Gen Con this year about forming a strategic alliance to sell and promote The Order of the Stick. It is quite a thrill for all of us to help bring this witty comic to an even larger audience.
Paizo Publishing will be soliciting The Order of the Stick graphic novels through distribution channels for release early next year. Fans of the comic will be able to buy OOTS graphic novels and merchandise on paizo.com.
Im ecstatic to be working with
Pizo? Pozo? Whatever, says Burlew. The point is, these suckers are going to do all the hard work while I sit back and rake in the sweet, sweet cash. Burlew went on to explain how the proceeds from the new deal would be used to finance a 117-room Caribbean mansion and a giant moon-based laser beam. Im going to call it the Lunar Lazer 4700, with a z, he gushed.
The Order of the Stick was started by Burlew as a web-only comic on www.GiantITP.com in summer 2003. Since then, the strip has been growing in popularity by leaps and bounds, leading him to release The Order of the Stick in print format. The first OOTS book, The Order of the Stick: Dungeon Crawlin' Fools, went on sale in January 2005 and has been a huge success. The Order of the Stick: On the Origin of PCs was released at Gen Con Indy in August and will be available for sale outside of conventions this coming November. Fans will be able to place preorders on paizo.com immediately. A third OOTS compilation will be available in early 2006. Burlew, the runner-up in the Wizards of the Coast Fantasy Setting Search, is also chewing on some ideas for gaming products to be released through Giant in the Playground Games and distributed through Paizo, but the author shrieked and hid in a janitorial closet when pressed for details.
Burlew will also be contributing new The Order of the Stick cartoons to Dragon magazine beginning with Dragon 338, which hits newsstands on November 22. These strips will be brand new mini-stories featuring the characters from the online comic, though the strips in Dragon will stand on their own.
Three times a week, the boys in our editorial department cackle like Halloween witches and point at their computer screens, says Dragon Editor-in-Chief Erik Mona. Naively, I always ask whats so funny, and their answer is always the same: Rich Burlew posted a new The Order of the Stick, they say, and then they look at me with the kind of sad eyes and mini-pouts usually reserved for run-over animals. I couldnt be happier about the cartoon coming to Dragon magazine.

Hooray! Go Rich!
(And Pozo!)
Awesome! Congrats to Rich, and to Paizo!
Just found OotS recently. Ok, like within the last few days. Yeah for Rich!
Wow... how did you keep this under the radar for so long?
This will mark a new age for Dragon Magazine. In years to come, people will ask "What was the first issue with Order of the Stick?"
How much space is given for the strip? Will it be a single strip like Mt Zogon, or a full page?
It's good to see someone with the publishing skills can help Rich with the logistics nightmare he had with the first book. I can spend my money with confidence with future releases. Will Paizo.com's store sell some of the other OotS swag, such as the buttons and shirts? ::big smile of hope::

It's good to see Order of the Stick finally reached a high enough level to attain the Feat: Negotiate Publishing Deal :D
Well done!

This is excellent news - I love OotS! :-D
Glee!
Where's my credit card?
*does the happy dance*
Boo-yah!!
No more shall we lack the Stick! Yessssssssssss!
*explodes in glee*
I just pre-ordered both books. :)
I second a previous question: will Paizo be carrying the mugs, shirts, and other stuff with OOTS on them?
Congo-Rats... Piazo & Rich Burlew, on bringing OOTS to the magazine.
*sets up a stool outside, under the mail box. waiting expectantly*

Hi Everyone!
Glad to see y'all are as excited as we are to have Rich working with us! We plan to offer a whole array of OOTS merchandise in the future, so stay tuned! I'll let you in on it as it develops.

I never knew that Rich Burlew was runner-up at the setting search.
Is there any information on what he submitted?
I thought 'Dawnforge' was second in the contest...
Wizards.com interview with Rich during the setting search process
Sadly, though, the only ones who know about the setting are Rich and the folks at WotC who have read it. WotC bought it - for $10,000! - and Rich signed an NDA on it.
I too am pleased to hear this announcement.

Shameless bump for people who haven't seen this yet.

Does anyone know if WoTC has plans to release the other two settings in any shape or form?

Given that they have been pretty adamant that they are only going to support two settings at a time, and they don't seem too keen on leaving either Eberron or Forgotten Realms in the dust, if they do realease the other two settings it is likely to be as one shot Campaign Options much like Ghostwalk, or else the might use peices of the campaign settings (i.e. character races, classes, prestige classes, or even magic systems) in other core products.
i was wondering when they'd do that.
OOTS is just too funny.
At last!
Go Paizo, Go Lisa!
I'm glad Rich can get back to what he's good at.
looks for pre-order button

For all we know, Magic of Incarnum might be based on one of those settings.
Anyway, this is awesome. Congratulations to Rich Burlew and Paizo - I look forward to more OotS comics and a magazine that's better for it.
Will these books be available through Diamond as the Dragon Compendium was offered? I prefer to buy my books through my comic dealer.
Thanks
Chris

Yep - we'll be soliciting them to all the usual distributors.

Congrats to Rich and Paizo!
OOTS is very funny stuff, and a good number of the rules articles Rich has over at his site a pretty good too.
Already have his first book, and just pre-ordered the second one. Heck, while I was at it, all of this joy encouraged me to get a Dragon subscription again.
OOTS is required reading for rules lawyers and those who dislike rules lawyers.
Cool! OoTS is the kind of gaming humor I like: funny, and no cheap shots at gamers. I don't like laughing at myself or my friends, dangit.
I hope OoTS will be in Dragon a long, long time.
:)

I just posted a quick review of "The Order of the Stick: Dungeon Crawlin' Fools" in the Paizo store. I bought it from Rich when it first came out, and I really enjoyed it. If you don't know about his work, head over to his site.

Excellent news! People been harping for that strip for a long time now. Usually a strip gets popular in the Paizo pages FIRST, then goes on its own, this is role reversal indeed.
w00t! That's awesome! Go Rich!
Ummm, there will still be new strips on-line 3x week after it gets published in Dragon, right?

Yes - the all-new strips in Dragon are in addition to the usual web strips.

Was there supposed to be a strip in the newest edition of Dragon? DId I miss it somewhere?
Mulban wrote: Was there supposed to be a strip in the newest edition of Dragon? DId I miss it somewhere? It's on page 65 of issue 339. Starting with 340, it will be going full-page, and should be easier to find.

I know it's a tiny bit unrelated but...
