Solid Design

4/5

The double-sided Noble Estate flip-mat presents a top-down "roof on" view on one side and a "roof-off" view on the other side. Both sides include the same large, central courtyard with a central fountain, statuary, and hedges. The "roof on" view doesn't show where the doors to the interior of the house are, which is an admittedly minor thing but could be an issue during a game. The "roof off" view is one I've used in a few adventures now, and it has a good array of interior rooms. There's a multi-stall stable, an attractive parlor, a servant's wing, kitchens, and a main wing with posh sitting rooms and bedrooms. The detail is impressive, with everything from paintings hanging on the walls to individual pots and pans in the kitchen. The flip-mat works great for everything from a Pathfinder Lodge to a rich merchant's house, and could be used for drawing room mysteries, garden party assassinations, and more. I think if I had my druthers I'd prefer the "roof on" view be replaced with another, different noble estate (I prefer more variety), but on the whole this is a solid flip-mat. As with all Paizo flip-mats, this is fully-gridded on both sides and takes dry and wet erase markers just fine.

Great map.

5/5

Love it. I generally only buy the maps I know I can use in a lot of different campaigns and this one fits the bill.
Not sure how or why this got a low rating from other users. To each his own. 5 stars in my opinion.

Not worth it.

1/5

GOOD:
I like the biggest room. It is a cool place for a conversation that turns bad. The colors.
BAD:
Almost everything else.
The too big featureless roof, the courtyard design, the missing doors and windows, the too cramped rooms and stables - i could go on and on.
WORSE:
That this flip mat was even produced like this. Isn't there some kind of editor who "proofchecks" these designs?

Luckily the only flip-mat in the whole line that is not worth the purchase.

Not sure what this would be useful for.

1/5

Completely disappointed. This is one map, I’m passing over, whereas I happily hit my brick and mortar store for the new map releases.

The exterior is a lot of roof with little features. There should be gargoyles and other things that could be useful for encounters. The interior is even more disappointing. It contains plenty of rooms like we've already seen on previous maps. There are a lot of small rooms where encounters would not be good. I was really hoping for a ballroom for party scenes, with plenty of detail and room for a party. There's no awesome library or dining hall.

The art, as usual is great, but that doesn’t save it.

It's similar to the Pathfinder lodge (which is actually more useful) which makes it largely obsolete.

Also, how many noble houses only have one floor? This could have been a good multi-map pack if it included useful spaces and rooms.

Nice

Nice, can't wait to see what we will be getting in this one :)

Same TRDG!

Nice! It sorta reminds me of the Pathfinder's Lodge house? Anyways, the building could be very useful, serving either as a villain NPC's mansion…. or even the estate of a high-level PC who's made it into the epic levels. He better surround his mansion with tons of bodyguards…. because he's probably earned tons of powerful enemies by then.

The shown placeholder cover is indeed from the Pathfinder Lodge.

I imagine this could be useful for AP 99 or 100...

The art, as usual is great. This map would be useful, but I don't believe it's going to live up to its potential.

I agree with the previous post.
The exterior is too bland and repeated in a considerable part - about half - on the flipside.
And the interior is too cramped in both the stables and the outlying chambers.
Also not a single window!
I don't know a single noble house without windows and only 3 doors on the front side?
The design is unusable.
It would have been better to leave the courtyard out and opt for a ground and second floor.

This will be the first flip-mat in years that i will not buy!

A real sad effort.

Liberty's Edge

Torn. The rooftop side is useless, but the interior side is pretty good with a lot of rooms that I could populate. I would essentially be buying half a flip-mat, with the other side blank, for all the use it'll be me. A basement or second floor would have been better -- maybe even a half and half map, with the flip side being split 50/50 between a basement and a second floor, to avoid needing to replicate the courtyard. Water under the bridge now though. I may get this one, but definitely bottom tier on acquisition priority.

I like the interior. I am just creating a thieves guild adventure where the PCs have to infiltrate a thieves guild and have to undertake various assignments to become members, its great for that.
But I have to agree with the previous posts about the roof map. Though if Pcs are trying to gain access via the roof to thieve then the roof becomes a playable area.
But why not create two floors, then have more space downstairs. Or a basement.
I'll still get it, my map and tile collection is crying out for houses and mansions.

I don't know, I don't hate the roof. Great for an ambush in the courtyard or an assault from the outside.

But, I agree, like so many of these "big house" maps, one interior floor just isn't enough. So would the answer be a "Noble Estate II" with a second floor and a basement, or a 2-flipmat jumbo pack with basement, 1st and 2nd floors, and roof, or just doing floors 1 and 2 in the future (no basement or roof)?

Personally, I like the jumbo pack idea. Maybe once a year, Paizo could release a 2-flipmat jumbo pack of interrelated maps and have it count for 2 months worth of subscription (like when magazines do double issues that could for 2 weeks or 2 months). We've gt a lo of great maps, but having 4 sides to work with once in a while would allow some interesting new possibilities.

It may look like the Pathfinder Lodge house but it's not. Nor is the cover the PF lodge. This map is not as useful as it could be. It really needed a ballroom, and some open spaces... rooms where encounters can take place. We already have a very similar map from Paizo.

If you read more carefully you notice i wrote that the PLACEHOLDER COVER was the same as Pathfinder Lodge.

Of course the final cover is another.

Otherwise i totally agree with you - a ballroom would have been awesome.
Or a real big dining room.
A giant courtyard or roof - not so much.

I have to agree with the comments thus far and, while I like Mosaic's idea of "Noble Estate II" or a jumbo map pack with two flipmats, I would exhort Paizo's map team to consider rethinking the layout and place the bedrooms on a second floor so that ballroom or extravagant parlor or grand library could find a place within the structure. OHR's Blackwolf Manor (a PDF) would make for great reference as it is as well a walled mansion, but is a two-floor affair that packs in a lot more in a smaller footprint. Hope that this can be revised in such a way that it can spark more in the way of imagination.

The roof is a mistake. The "indoors" side can be used for encounters outside, which would leave the other side available to be a second floor. A second floor doubles the usable space and lets you put in more interesting stuff (libraries, armories, collections, arcane studies, whatever) once you've got the mandatory kitchens and bedrooms out of the way.

Definitely a double map set so you can include a second floor, and please give the roof character. If you're going to create a map with so large a roof, don't make it boring. There's no gargoyles, things to hide behind, etc.

And the rooms inside are cramped and there for flavor but not practical for real encounters.

"Noble Estate" with one bathroom and one toilet room....

These are my favorite kind of flip maps. I'll definitely be buying at least two hard copies and the PDF when it comes out. Kudos to Paizo. Great job. Keep them coming like this and I'll be a Customer forever

The problem with the second floor thing is this is a two-sided map and you can't have both side showing at the same time obviously. If they're going to do a second floor it seriously needs to be a to map set

I love how it looks like a zoomed-in view of the Mansion settlement building from the kingdom building rules!

Well, my Flip-Mat is already pre-ordered and will be shipping soon, so I'm getting it regardless of opinions. But I do agree with the previous comments. A minor disappointment in that this is a single-story building, which is not too impressive for a "noble" residence.

The Nobles that occupy this manse…. must be a really low-ranking noble that fell out of favor from the Family Patriarch. He has a decent courtyard, but no spacious ballroom! In any case, I got mine for a good pre-order price, so I'd still make use of this for my (ahem, D&D) campaigns. It would still be useful as a mansion/hideout for an NPC or villain.

picking up mine tomorrow at the local shop and buying the PDF as well. love this one. ..lot like the country Inn that can be used in a lot of my games
