Is the private section for subscribers?
Right now it's just for site collaborators, i.e. those who are working on the site. We "stage" content in work areas while we format and link the content in private work queues and then let it sit until the customary "Street + 2 weeks" delay period lapses.
We've *considered* starting a subscriber service where people who are not site collaborators can gain that same level of early access to content but we've not really pursued it much yet. Basically not sure how much interest there'd be in it.

The inclusion of the magic item slots for animal companions was something I advocated in writing my sections of the book, as something that I felt the messageboard community had long wished for some clarity on and I'm glad people like that part. Ask and ye shall receive... at least sometimes. :)
Hound master too!

Great book but my only compaint is that the Barbarian and the Rouge are the only classes that got an animal companion and familiar in the book. Also to far the rouge has an arctype that gives a monkey familiar but the one in the this doesn't limit you that way.
I would like to see familiar/animal companion archtypes for...
Bard-(familiar)
Cleric-(Familiar)
Fighter-(Animal Companion)
Ranger-(Animal companion at 1st level maybe looses spellcasting)
Ranger-(Familiar and better spellcasting)
Sorcerers-(Familiar for those who want to be something other then arcane bloodline.)
Oracle-(Familiar and Animal Companion arctypes)
Summoner-(Replaces Eidolon with templated(celestial, fiendish, etc.)Animal Companion.)
Paladin-(Animal Companion at 1st)
Alchemist-(I think there is a way for them to get familiars but an archtype to improve it would be nice)
Magus-(Familiar focused)
Magus-(Animal Companion)
Gunslinger-(Animal Companion)
Druid-(Familair instead of Animal Companion.)

I would like to see familiar/animal companion archtypes for...
Bard-(familiar) - Magician (APG 82)
Cleric-(Familiar) - Eagle Domain, Frog Domain, Monkey Domain, Serpent Domain (UM - Other nature-themed classes with access to domains may select an animal or terrain domain in place of a regular domain.)
Ranger-(Animal companion at 1st level maybe loses spellcasting) - Falconer (UC 67)
Sorcerers-(Familiar for those who want to be something other then arcane bloodline.) - Tattooed Sorcerer (Inner Sea Magic)
Oracle-(Familiar and Animal Companion arctypes) Nature Mystery
Alchemist-(I think there is a way for them to get familiars but an archtype to improve it would be nice)
Magus-(Familiar focused) - How "focused" they can already get a familiar, there's not any class I'd considered familiar focused, so why would a magus?
Druid-(Familair instead of Animal Companion.) See Cleric above.

Seasinger Bard from APG also gets a familiar, but from a list.
Magus-(Familiar focused) - How "focused" they can already get a familiar, there's not any class I'd considered familiar focused, so why would a magus?
Magus makes a successful Kn(Planes).
DM: "The creature has DR 5/Piercing..."Magus: "My Hedgehog wraps himself around my non-spellcasting hand..."

Beat me to it!
Also a Cleric can get an animal companion with the Animal Domain at level 4. One of the Magus Arcana grants a familiar to the Magus.
So only Fighter, Monk, Alchemist and Gunslinger don't have options?
Gunslinger really should have a "Lone Ranger" archetype.
Does Parasitic Twin count for the Alchemist? :)

I think that the book is great, but am disappointed not to see an option for the Gunslinger.
I'm currently playing a surly highwayman character(5 Gunslinger, 2 Rogue and 1 Fighter/Cad), who rides his faithful horse. I've toyed with the idea of dipping into Cavalier for the Mount ability, but the Cavalier's emphasis on Orders/Armor just don't feel right for my highway character concept.
I had hoped that there would be either a Gunslinger archtype or a feat that would allow any class to obtain a weaker version of the animal companion. Perhaps in a future book....

This book is adorable.
Just on the first pass:
Please keep getting Emily Fiegenschuh cover art.
I really dig the animal item slot work. Thanks Jason!
That artwork on page 4? More of that please! Just the iconics chillin', relaxin', everyday lifin'. Seeing Feiya, Harsk, and Seoni just taking it easy with their animal companions was a real treat and Good God even here Alain's face is the most punchable thing. Do the art orders specifically ask for that?
Commonly associated animals by race was a great touch. Nice continuation of what was in Blood of Fiends, IIRC.
Huntmaster is going to make a lot of folks happy, I think. This year seems to be one for longstanding Pathfinder wishes to come true. :)
I know people are split over the centerfolds, but I've been liking these huge art spreads, and I really enjoy this one's focus on Golarion-specific animal species. (I could have sworn the firefoot fennec could be found on the Storval Plateau though. Am I remembering wrong?)
Also on that centerfold, I really want to thank the artist for the ether frog. It flip-flopped between "ew" and "awwwwww" a lot until I read the text. Without the context of the text, I would have sworn it was the most Pokemon-ish looking critter on Golarion yet. After the text and realizing what I thought were certain organs were probably something else: G'AH! (srsly, the black and white pic of the ether frog? Freakin' adorable)
The Master Of Your Kind feat for familiars looks like it could lead to all sorts of fun.
Page 21 art. CHILDHOOD DREAM.
The two page section on awakened animals and what that means for them by animal type is something I really want to sit down with.
Figurine of the Glass Walrus. :D
That artwork of Lem on a llama makes me happier than I would have expected.
Moose companion. @#$% YES.
I love that armadillos are now a familiar option. Sadly/fortunately, no leprosy ability.
The back cover's list of the Big 20 gods and associated animals is fun. I really liked some of the more unexpected examples(Sarenrae and basking reptiles, Pharasma and elephants, etc)
And there's a lot of mythological callbacks hidden in there if you're familiar with the history of those gods...
Shelyn: ....,wolves
:)
Zon-Kuthon: ...,rabid wolves
;_;

Eric Hinkle |

Wait, wolves are associated with Shelyn? Being a big wolf fan, I am oddly pleased by this. But are they associated with any other deities besides her & her brother? In RL mythology they're usually companied with war gods.
And just what animals are associated with orcs and half-orcs? I always thought that wild swine and wolverines would make great furry pals for half-orcs, given their mutual ferocity and ability to survive.

Lamashtu was the other one I think. With Shelyn and ZK though, it probably ties into their family history.
Orcs and half-orcs get boars, but a whole lot more too. Wolves again, and lots of megafauna.

I was going to say some things, but this pretty much covers it. This is an amazing book in every way. I expect to use every single section, and the art is great from start to end.

The center spread in this book is the first that actually didn't annoy me. All the others since the revision in format were a bit too much art for art's sake and no crunch, and here the art actually served a purpose, showing us what a lot of these creatures really looked like, some for the first time.
And the walrus's big special ability is Fatal Gore, giving them a base 19-20 threat range on their gore attacks, though the animal companion version doesn't get that ability till after the size increase at 7th class level.

Robert Jordan |

I think the only thing I was sad about is the Moose and Walrus get to start medium and increase to large size while our poor Bear is stuck at medium. I LOVE this book and it's going to get a lot of use from our table. I was just hoping they'd give us something about Bears going large size maybe at 7th level or something.

I am glad to see this clarification, and this is going onto my must-buys, as I am currently playing a druid in PFS. This will give me some future ideas for character concepts. I'd like to wait until the PDF comes out, but if the book is at the store tomorrow, it is getting bought.

Hmmmm.
I'll have to look into this one. I often end up with Druids as the party's NPC while DMing. They make excellent secondary healers/attackers, not to mention they provide convenient excuses to be "offscreen" while the PC's try to figure out what to do next.
"Hey, let's ask Raina!"
"We can't. She's off foraging for dinner."
So more info on animal companions is always welcome, especially since the current NPC Druid is rather fickle with her "pets" and changes them quite often.
Looks like you'll be getting some money from me this month.

Yeah, mindsets and such. Some interesting ideas in there. Particularly fond of the aquatics section.
One other thing I want to thank this book for tying into that part: Thanks for not falling into the traps the 2E Monstrous Manual fell into in some of their natural animal write-ups, where there was some obvious favoritism going on with evil-leaning octopi and good-leaning and totally-not-romanticized-because-they-appeared-on-someone's-middle-school-f older-covers dolphins. ;)

Hate to say it, but the evil octopi / good dolphin trope is well within the classic mythological view of those animals. That has continued into modern television / movie portrayals as well. And, octopuses don't rescue many people. There's that too...

Their father was a wolf spirit. I believe zun kathon tortured him into madness and sends him roaming about every once in a while to cause destruction.
