AoO @ Rosanne (left a threatened square): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19 damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
The sailor in the middle slices at Rosanne as she moves away. The one on the left is then stabbed by both Rosanne and Jacques, leaving one remaining in the middle. "I surrender too. Please spare me!"
1 is dying, 2 have surrendered.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Torgal and Tobias finally get past the defenses of the sailors on the stairs and take them down. Only the 2 in the sterncastle with crossbows still stand. When they see their allies go down they drop their crossbows and surrender with their arms up.
You are successful in taking command of the sterncastle and the boats for now. Still sound of the fighting can be heard through the fog.
Round 10
Initiative: Rosanne, Jacques, Torgal, Tobias, sailors
Battle Map
All the standing sailors have surrendered.
Rosanne |
"Torgal, if you can I need some healing." Rosanne asks him, keeping an eye on what's happening around her as she moves the surrendered sailors away from the ships boat. "Might need to tighten those stays?" She adds to Jacques.
perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Rosanne is down 10hp.
Jacques Lacrimoisi |
Jacques pulls out a bottle of liquid and knocks it back quickly. "We should tie them up," he says distastefully. Then he narrows his eyes at the mists to the west. "We are supposed to secure the wheel, oui? It would be, against our orders, for any of us to wander into that fog, where our fellow pirates are fighting alongside the crew that we all respect and follow loyally. But if asked, all of us will say that we remained here as ordered, oui?"
potion of cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Rosanne |
"sounds lovely to me." Rosanne replies to Jacques, she smiles a little, blood dripping off her hands to show the work she's been doing. Glancing up at the wheel deck to yell at Toby. "Oi Slick! Stand by the wheel and act like you know what you're doing."
She's in a strange mood?
Torgal Cailean |
”Aye, here ye are - bottoms up!” Torgal hands his tankard to Rosanne, dark liquid swirling inside.
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
”An’ ah don’t think we should be wanderin’ alone,” he adds. ”Ah’ll stay with the wheel - maybe wit’ someone who likes ta throw things?”
Torgal’s proposing a 2-2 split, with one ranged and one melee combatant in each group. He’s solidly in the melee department. Or do we even have any ranged folks? XD
Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Glancing up at the wheel deck to yell at Toby. "Oi Slick! Stand by the wheel and act like you know what you're doing."
Tobias gives Rosanne a severe salute from the wheel. "Aye! Aye! And Torgal, don't be stingily with the healing!" The young sailor points to his bloody torso.
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Rosanne moves the surrendered sailors away from the boat.
Torgal heals Rosanne. now 11/15hp
Jacques drinks a potion. now 19/21hp
Tobias stands at the wheel and watches the surrendered sailors.
Out of the fog 3 more sailors run towards the boat. One of the Officers of the Man's Promise, armed with a long boarding pike (grants reach), moves to the boat. She signals 2 other sailors with her to attack you. One of them wounds the freshly healed Jacques.
short sword @ jacques: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20 damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
short sword @ rosanne: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Round 11
Initiative: Rosanne, Jacques, Torgal, Tobias, Sailors, Officer
Battle Map
Rosanne |
Rosanne sighs. "One bloody fool after another!" Slashing at the sailor trying to gut her.
claw: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
claw: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
"Torgal Gettem!" She yells when her strike is a mere scratch.
Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Round 11
Tobias deserts the wheel and rushes to help his friends and crewmates, making it to Jacques's side and attack the sailor in front of the wizard.
Rapier: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Dmg.: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Torgal Cailean |
Torgal flings himself into the fray, though he doesn’t have very far to fling since the fray has come to him! He splashes the remnants of his drink in the sailor’s face before jabbing with his rapier. ”Better learn t’ handle yer drink!” he cheers.
Dirty Trick, TWF, DF: 1d20 + 5 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 5 - 2 + 2 = 23
Rapier, TWF, DF: 1d20 + 4 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 4 - 2 + 2 = 23
Piercing damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Crit Confirmation: 1d20 + 4 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 4 - 2 + 2 = 14
Crit damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Dirty Trick to Blind #1, then attack. Torgal’s Divine Fighting Technique means he doesn’t provoke an AoO for attempting the Dirty Trick maneuver. Here’s hoping a 14 confirms against that sailor’s blind AC!
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Jacques rapier: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Combined attacks from Jacques and Tobias take down a sailor.
Combined attacks from Rosanne and Torgal deeply would the other sailor who drops his weapon and falls to his knees in surrender, clutching his wounds.
Profession (Sailor): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
The Officer finishes releasing the boat that the previous sailors had almost completed and is about to escape.

Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Round 12
Tobias takes a 5-foot step and engages THE BORG the officer in combat!
Rapier: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Dmg.: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Jacques Lacrimoisi |
Sorry for the delay! I’ve been slammed this week.
Jacques draws his pistol with a murderous gleam in his eye and fires at the officer from point-blank range.
Pistol shot, Deadly Aim, vs touch AC: 1d20 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 3 - 1 = 19
B/P damage, Deadly Aim: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Rosanne |
Rosanne takes a step away to let the melee fighters at the officer, throwing a Snowball spell at her.
Snowball vs Touch AC - Melee: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 3 - 4 = 1 Well f!*$!
Torgal Cailean |
Torgal runs around behind the others and jumps into the boat. ”Sorry!” he calls cheekily, ”this one’s already taken. Go find yer own!” He splashes the last dregs of his drink at her face for good measure.
Dirty Trick to Blind, DF: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 5 + 2 = 27
Move to just northeast (or east) of Tobias (in the boat or blocking the officer’s movement to the boat) and Dirty Trick. This will provoke an AoO due to her reach (if I understand correctly - though perhaps she doesn’t have the hands on her weapons for that if she’s also releasing the boat - we can only hope).
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Rosanne steps back and throws another wide snowball.
AoO on Jacques: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 reach weapon
Jacques draws his pistol, aiming at the officer which gives her an opening to attack. She is too slow and the bullet slams into her. With surprise and pain on her face she can't react to Torgal hopping into the boat and temporarily blinding her as Tobias moves in but almost trips over the body under his feet.
She steps back and wipes the liquid out of her eyes then stabs forward at Tobias but stumbles.

Rosanne |
Snowball vs Touch AC - Melee: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (8) + 3 - 4 = 7 Sigh...
Rosanne again finds avoiding Toby makes her spell go wide.
Not that either of those would have hit anyway. :(
Jacques Lacrimoisi |
Jacques reloads his pistol with a special paper cartridge and again points it at the officer.
Pistol vs touch AC, Deadly Aim, no Precise Shot: 1d20 + 3 - 1 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 3 - 1 - 4 = 15
B/P damage, Deadly Aim: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Torgal Cailean |
Torgal hops out of the boat and presses the officer back, his rapier thrusting towards her hand in an attempt to relieve her of the burden of her weapon.
Disarm, DF: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 4 + 2 = 21
Move (provoking an AoO), then Disarm.
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Rosanne throws another snowball but they don't seem to be working at all.
Jacques fires another bullet into the officer's leg, distracting her from hitting Torgal.
boarding pike AoO: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
A stab from Torgal at the officer's hand causes her to drop the weapon on the deck.
Again Tobias loses his aim.
"I'll not be captured by pirates." She states and then dives into the sea and swims to the loosened boat to escape.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22 avoids AoO
Swim: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Round 14
Initiative: Rosanne, Jacques, Torgal, Tobias, Officer
Battle Map
Torgal Cailean |
Torgal hurries back to the rigging and starts pulling the boat back up.
Profession (sailor): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Tobias positions himself back to the center of the deck, but with eyesight of the wheel, ready for another attack. "Jacques. Feel free to shoot her dead", the young sailor pointed to the escaping officer.
Rosanne |
Rosanne steps to the railing, perhaps now she was out of melee she could be hit?
snowball vs touch AC: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Fort save DC13 or staggered for a round. Last spell for the day.
The Diceroller hates me again.
Jacques Lacrimoisi |
Jacques reloads. "Blood in the water," he grins. "The sharks will finish her for us." Then he shoots the boat, hoping to render it unusable.
Pistol, Deadly Aim: 1d20 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (9) + 3 - 1 = 11
Damage? Deadly Aim: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
I figure the boat should be much easier to hit, and even a single hole in it will make it dangerously unusable.
Voice in the Maelstrom |
fort save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24 not staggered
The officer is his by a freezing cold snowball. As Jacques fires a shot wide into the boat she finally decides to surrender. "Ok, you got me."
Ship's Boat (motionless) AC 2. HP 120. Hardness 5. Bullet did 3 damage.
Combat is over!
The noise of the fighting around you dies down and soon the fog disappears. The Wormwood pirates have been successful in taking the Merchant vessel. Surrendered sailors are marched on deck and placed together under guard. Fallen sailors are dumped on deck together. Captain Harrigan walks out of the Captain's Quarters holding what appears to be a human heart in his hands. "Sandara!" The priestess comes running towards the Captain, a couple scratches gained from the fighting. She notices you and seems glad to see you are alive.
"Beseech Besmara to spare these souls from passing so they may have the chance to join us." Besmara nods and chants with arms spread wide. Positive energy spread out from here and seals the wounds of many of the sailors who had fallen in battle. They sit up, startled, scared, surprised, unsure. Some were too far gone and remain unhealed, dead.
All of her channels for today(5): 10d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 6, 6, 2, 4, 3, 6, 3, 5) = 41 If you are within 30ft. of her you benefit from this healing too.
"Hear me Rahadoumi. You are mine now and have the chance to join my crew. I will give you time to think this over. Piracy is not for everyone." He commands his officers to lock them in the secure storage near the main hold of the ship.
Rosanne |
The moment she sees Sandara Rosanne moves closer to get any healing going.
She's happy to see that Sandara survived the taking of the ship. It was a bloody affair. One which Rosanne worryingly enjoyed.
Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Tobias squeezes in with the rest, eager for the healing.
Well, mum. That's one. The young sailor thought to himself, concerning his first successful bit of piracy independent of the Seawraith. If possible, Tobias stands by Sandara to check if she's okay.
Torgal Cailean |
Torgal grunts as he puts his weapon and tankard away. “Reckon they might not appreciate th’ Pirate Queen’s blessing’,” he mutters, face wrinkled in a scowl. “Their choice t’ reject th’ gods, but it seems mighty foolish if’n you ask me. Wonder if’n any of ‘em need a drink.”
Jacques Lacrimoisi |
Jaques gnashes his teeth in frustration, having been too busy fighting the crew of the new ship to take the opportunity to inflict collateral damage against his enemies in the crew of his own ship. He angrily cleans his blade on the shirt of the surrendered officer and turns away in disgust. He steps into the circle of healing towards the very end, having looked after his own injuries during the fight.
Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
"Well, I guess the secret's out. Not that you were necessarily keeping it a secret", Tobias nods Sandara's holy symbol on her neck. "How long as the Captain known, ya think?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Sandara smiles again, "It's always been known. I don't hide what I am. The Captain believes I bring him good fortune."
Aboard the Wormwood, a party begins as the pirates celebrate their victory with fine food and drink from the Man’s Promise’s hold.
Captain Harrigan holds a meeting with his top officers and divvies up the plunder from the Man’s Promise among the crew in the early evening. Bolstered by gold and good drink, the party lasts for 36 hours, well into the next night. Naturally, no work takes place during the party.
During this time, you can take up to 5 ship actions each, or do nothing but drink and revel like most of the pirate crew does.
For taking part in the battle you each receive 50gp.
For taking and holding the aft deck and the boats, the group receives a potion of Cure Moderate Wounds(CL3) and a potion of Resist Energy(CL 3) and an additional 50 gp each.
For warning him of the sailor sneaking up behind him he gifts Tobias a Masterwork Rapier.
For each sailor you defeated the group receives 25 gp (total 275 gp) to share.
For capturing the officer alive the group receives 125 gp to share.
Total gp each: 200.
Group share: Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds(CL 3), Potion of Resist Energy(CL 3).
Tobias: Masterwork Rapier
Will you take ship actions or relax and enjoy the party?
Rosanne |
Rosanne is still coming down from the rush of battle and spends her time drinking and reveling with her friends.
After tucking her share of the gold in her pouch, and storing her pouch under her shirt.
Potions as group loot?
Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
For warning him of the sailor sneaking up behind him Captain Harrigan gifts Tobias a Masterwork Rapier.
Tobias marvel at the exquisite weapon. It looked elven made, with a feathered pommel and a bright navy handle wrapping, with excellent balance.
"Thank you very much, Captain", The young sailor beamed at his gift.Tobias celebrates with the crew, showing off his new rapier, and generally enjoying the good will of his crewmates. On the last night of the party, Tobias really puts the moves on Sandara, hoping to spent a private evening together.
Diplomacy (with Charming): 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 10 + 1 = 21
Potions as group loot. I say Jacques holds on to the cure potion, while Torgal holds the resist energy potion.
Torgal Cailean |
Do we want an inventory sheet? I've got a GoogleSheets template that's easy to copy/modify for the group if that's the case - just let me know!
Torgal stumbles over to the feast, hoping there's been some decent beer "liberated" from the Man's Promise. He celebrates with the crew, liberally refilling mugs and singing the Drunken God's praises long into the night.
No complaints on that proposed split, though it does rather leave Rosanne empty-handed.
Voice in the Maelstrom |
The party lasts through the night, the next day and well into the next night, the pirate crew drinking and reveling together because of the captured bounty. Hostilities seem to be put on pause as even the crew who seem to hate you still share a drink to celebrate. Almost everyone gets drunk or passes out at some point, mostly during the second night, effectively ending the celebrations.
The cook's cabin on the Man's Promise was heretofore unoccupied and a couple of inebriated pirates are found snuggled up in there the next morning.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
At dawn, a few hours after the celebration finally winds down, the ship’s bell sounds, calling all hands on deck. When the crew is assembled, a long line of captured officers and sailors from the Man’s Promise is brought on deck and paraded before the crew. Captain Harrigan addresses the captives first, offering a place on the Wormwood’s crew for any who want to throw their lot in with pirates. Several of the Rahadoumi sailors step forward; Master Scourge cuts their bonds, and the sailors take their places among the Wormwood’s crew. Harrigan then turns to address the Wormwood’s crew.
"All right, you scurvy tars! You’ve done a right good job by me—we’ve got a second ship now, and she’s quite a prize from the looks of her. But I still have only one crew. So here’s the plan—the Wormwood will sail on to our planned destination with our new shipmates here, while Mr. Plugg will pick a skeleton crew to sail the Man’s Promise to Port Peril, where she’ll be worth a pretty penny as salvage."
"As for these fine fellows here"—Harrigan gestures at the remainder of the captured ship’s crew—"some of them will no doubt be worth a hefty ransom from their families back in Azir. And for the rest, if the life of a pirate’s not for them, they can spend the rest of their lives at sea!"
To make his point, Harrigan grabs one of the Rahadoumi sailors and throws her overboard to the accompaniment of cheers and laughter from the Wormwood’s crew. As the unfortunate woman sinks beneath the waves, many of the remaining sailors scramble to swear their loyalty to Harrigan.
Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Tobias sighs dejectedly at the young Rahadoumi's fate, not sure whether to throw his life away on a rescue attempt.
Jacques Lacrimoisi |
Oh hurrah! Bon chance!
Oh shoot, I should have attempted to influence more of our shipmates while we were reveling!
Voice in the Maelstrom |
The officers are led belowdecks and the crew begins to disperse to their daily tasks. As they do, Mr. Plugg and Master Scourge pick out several of the Wormwood’s original crew, telling them to be aboard the Man’s Promise within 10 minutes to set sail for Port Peril. You are all chosen to join the skeleton crew as well, and Scourge smiles evilly as he picks you.
You have little time left on the Wormwood. Gather your gear, visit Grok's store one last time to buy things if you want.
Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Tobias scrambles to grab his gear from his strongbox. In the chaos, the young sailor finds the besmaran cleric. "Sandara? Are you being reassigned to the Man's Promise?"
Voice in the Maelstrom |
Sandara nods to Tobias, her stance betraying a little awkwardness. "Yes. I heard the Captain wants to sell it. Without him to temper Plugg's hate, we need to be careful."
Anyone going to shop with Grok? You each have 200gp + what you had before if you want to spend. There will be no chance to shop for a while.

Sandara nods to Tobias, her stance betraying a little awkwardness. "Yes. I heard the Captain wants to sell it. Without him to temper Plugg's hate, we need to be careful."
"Indeed we do, my precious Sandara. Besmara has seen us through many storms, let's hope she is still us. See you onboard." Tobias goves the cleric a quick kiss on the hand and rushes off to Grok's.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19At Grok's shop, Tobias marvels at the masterwork thieve's tools. "I'd like those please, Miss Grok."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
Tobias purchases the masterwork theieve's tools for 100 gp.
Before the young sailor leaves, Tobias will see if Grok wants to buy his original rapier.
Tobias "Toby" Wraithborn |
Fair enough.
