Male Elf Ranger 4

Those pesky humans!

Male Elf Ranger 4

I know, but there is a small problem. Namely that I am dead. :D

Male Elf Ranger 4

So long as I am buried with my bow eventually.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Ok, I am going to be basically offline for the next week. Going skiing for a week in France, so will be nice.

Won't be able to post alas, so it will be at least a week of you all having to be diplomatic till I will be able to do anything.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Obviously as Talon is dead I cannot really complain, but I would really hate to be buried with the weapon that killed me. He was always a bowman, and so to be buried with a sword seems to be rejecting that part of him, and especially a sword that butchered him.

Fear not though, I shall not come back to haunt you if you do bury me with a sword, but I just wanted to put it out there.

Male Elf Ranger 4

I feel bad, seems that my entangle spell is causing a lot lot more fuss than it is actually helping us. Sorry. Wanted to shut them down and stop them moving, meaning that we could take them on one by one. Turns out instead I might be responsible for a lot more than I had bargained for. Sorry

Talon

Male Elf Ranger 4

The more and more I read, the more I wonder if you are going to make it out alive at all. Its doesn't look like it thus far.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Oooooh, 18 inches of snow? That just means skiing into uni. Would be awesome. Please send that to the UK

Male Elf Ranger 4

Nope, alas Talon got rather bashed by the Three Fighters, and is now very very dead. Its cool though, I got to cast my first ever spell with him, despite having played him in so many campaigns over the last decade. :D

Still, out with the old elf, and in with the new.

Male Elf Ranger 4

I think it is more to do with being entangled by my spell to be honest

Male Elf Ranger 4

Hehe, I had to die at some point, just a shame that it came again so quickly.

Don't ressurect me guys. The kingdom is weak as hell already. I am sure I can come in as some kind of an NPC. We need a rogue for example. Never played one before, but am sure that it can't be that hard.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Looking at it, 2 of the fighters hit me for all in all 38 points of damage.

If I look at it right, ,then that takes me to -10, spot on death in one hit.

Up to you how to run it, but crunching the numbers, I am dead dead

Male Elf Ranger 4

I know that it could have been placed much better. However, it's Talon's first spell ever, and I was trying to work out whether he would instinctively know the range limitations and so on. I figured he probably wouldn't, and therefore placed it directly as I did. It still helps Wil in a roundabout way as it forces the witch to roll a ton more dice. Albeit for very low DC's, but the more dice you have to roll to do something, the more chances that you have to screw things up. At least that is something that playing Bloodbowl taught me.

Looking forward to the anniversary. Wondering what you have set up for us on December 9th :D

Male Elf Ranger 4

hope you don't mind me trying to save your backside there Wil :D

Male Elf Ranger 4

Casting on the Defensive:

Casting a spell while on the defensive does not provoke an attack of opportunity. It does, however, require a concentration check (DC 15 + double the spell's level) to successfully cast the spell. Failure means that you lose the spell.

I believe therefore if I read this correctly, that if I were to make the DC 17 concentration check, then I can actually cast the spell without provoking anything at all.

Also, if I read correctly, then I am at +6 to the roll in the first place, making it more or less 50/50 whether I get the spell off in the first place.

Wish me luck

Concentration check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

Awesome

Willing everything into a single last throw of the dice, Talon casts through sheer force of will his first ever spell. Entangle

As the roots and grasses around the feet of Wil, the Witch, Talon and the three Guards, he panics for a moment, having not wanted to affect such a large area. Still, the simple business of survival now comes to mind, as his rapier comes out of the scabbard and he goes into a duel for his life

Assuming this is allowed, then everyone 40 feet from me needs to make a reflex save of DC 13 or be entangled.

Reflex save

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

Male Elf Ranger 4

Seeing the Paladin being so thoroughly battered with the use of dark magics, Talon is immediately torn. Wil was his friend and desperately needed help. The mirror images that surrounded the witch did not help Wil at all, and something desperately needed doing about them.

It would most likely cost him his life, especially with the fighters so close, but perhaps if he were careful about it....

Basically I would like to cast my one spell of the day quietly in such a way that the whole area around me for 40 feet in each direction is covered in vines. I would like for the action to come in just as Wil is 'powering up' as it were.

Let me know if I can make a stealth roll or something to manage it, and then I will roll the dice.

Male Elf Ranger 4

I swore an oath that I would not strike the first blow, and thus far I have done but fire a single arrow at the hand that went for my friend. I will now lay away my weapon, leaving myself open to your blows if that is what you wish. Oaths and the furtherance of my people are more important to me than my own life, and thus I follow them

Realising that his temper had nearly caused him to break the oath to the Elves, he puts his bow back across his shoulders, and waits, hand on the rapier at his side, waiting.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Looks like I might be in trouble huh

Male Elf Ranger 4

Drawing a single arrow from his quiver, Talon fires in a single movement at the hand that has begun moving in the direction of Azlain. The arrow hits and pierces the 'skin' of it.

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Male Elf Ranger 4

Our insolence? No. Your ship and crew destroyed our ship and in the process attempted to kill us all. I think we are more than entitled to have some bad feeling, especially when you fired the first shot on our boat.

We are all guests of the Elves here, and thus must abide by their rules. They wish for there to be no trouble here, but mark my words. If we meet again elsewhere, the same can not be said.

Talon will be readying an action to fire upon the hand should it begin to move towards an ally, with the intention of destroying the hand and the one who cast it.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Because your efforts to sink our ship and kill us all were not as succesful as you would have wished them to be perhaps. We came here to claim an important part of our heritage, not to deal with murderers and traitors. Good day.

With venom in his voice, Talon will turn from the witch and begin the physical challenge.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Be careful. All of you.

Talon smiles at the group. It was so fatalistic, the idea that they could screw this one up. Elorin and Seltyn were some of the finest minds they had, especially coupled with Thalas' wisdom. He was sure they would be fine.

Turning back to the physical task ahead, he scans the test area, trying to work out the best route, and what equipment to keep on his and what to leave behind for the moment.

Male Elf Ranger 4

I too will be more than happy to work on the physical challenge if there are slots available. My own language skills are sadly lacking.

Talon will stand slightly to the side of the beleaguered mage, wondering how magic can be powerful enough to bend that one that that is most important, the mind.

Male Elf Ranger 4

I was reading a scroll? Yikes ok.

Will save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

As the words on the scroll are read, Talon feels his mind slowing down. Words that at one point made sense begin to no longer do so. Confusion is evident on his face.

Is this just temporary loss or permanent drain? Very important to me at least.

Male Elf Ranger 4

You have my oath that your methods of travel will not be shared with any outside of those that you have personally shown the methods of travel.

He will however attempt as best as he can to make a mental map of those trails so that he might be able to make his way back through them another time.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Their ideals fit my own in that case, certainly it is something that is worth looking into. Purity of the bloodline is something that the Elves tended to hold dear, although much has been added by the infusion of human blood into our race. Discussions with them might prove interesting.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Talon will most likely be in the background, training. He has said what he believes is the right option, and indeed will go hunting in the area. His spirit has awoken with a deep need to run, to find a packmate and run with them.

Running through the forest he trains up his skills in tracking, often following spoor for hours, and then simply watching whatever it might be that he has found till the sun begins descending and he must once more return home.

Male Elf Ranger 4

I believe we understand your desire to have the artifact returned to you. But if I might be so bold, then remember one thing. You have waited years for this, surely a small amount of time longer will be no such loss. We came to find ships that might help our race, and I think I speak for us all when I say that we would be loath to return home without them. Give us your swords and your men, and let us face battle together as a united front. Then, when we have the ships we are looking for, surely your esteem in the eyes of Lady Ciedrel will be greater, and thus your chances of having what you believe to be rightly yours will also be greater? Join us on this task, and we will do whatever we can within our means to make sure that your cause is treated justly and seen by the lady herself

Male Elf Ranger 4

Assuming Talon has overheard the conversation between Suny and Seltyn. Talon mutters slowly We lost the boat that would have brought us here. I wouldn't like to go back home empty handed. Might make the Queen wonder whether she is supporting the right side. In my opinion, we thank these people for their help, press on, and then on the way back pick them up and head to home. The mission comes first and all that. Hell, maybe this lot will be able to help our cause

His hands tight on the bow, he mulls over his thoughts, twisted and tangled as they are.

Male Elf Ranger 4

When Talon sees the huge flurry of emotions and almost crippling doubt and grief on Wil's face when carrying out the ritual, he wonders about his friend, and how he can cope when so much rides so close to the fore.

How can you remain sane, and yet feel as much as you do? I do not understand it at all.

He goes away for a while looking for a target to practise on, and then works more to hone and refine his skills. There was so much more to do, and so so little time.

Rested yes, recuperated not so much. It's good to have you back though Elorin. I missed you and that voice of yours He smiles slightly and then finds a flower to hand to her. He looks awkward at this point, as though he has never given a flower to a lady before.

Male Elf Ranger 4

SN: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

I am afraid that my knowledge of our races history is poor, although I can tell there is a story there. Your sarcasm befits you well. The grudges of old? I don't know of them, unless you are referencing to the time after the Goblin Wars. If that is the case, then there have been many changes recently. The Humans have a much shorter lifespan than ours, and thus there have been changes in Government there, and not all of the humans are as unreasonable as you might believe. Why do you hide yourselves away from the others, and withdraw your forces from the world around you?

I mean no offence by this, but these Elves around me and myself are searching for the tools to make our people great once more. It has been a hard fight thus far, and some of us have fallen, including myself at one time, although I was fortunate enough to have a little intervention there. Why do I mention this? Because the Elven nation needs help right now, and fast at that. There are Rovagug cultists that are roaming the lands, and with there being so few of us, we are having to take what we can find, when we can find it. For example, the Bow I have upon my back is a gift from the Humans for services rendered, I would introduce you to the bow Oneshot

If I am overstepping my bounds then sorry, but this part of the story feels like the undiplomatic bow wielder should say something.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Yikes! It's good that your toddler is ok. Kids are built like little tanks, I remember when my little brother was that age. Once managed to fall down our stairs at home and come away with a tiny bump on the head. He didn't even cry.

Sounds like your kid is looking to get some levels in rogue though!

Btw, who are you in the kingmaker game? I haven't clicked behind the links for aliases for fear that it would spoil the surprise of what people can do.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Yeah I think it might be worth us all taking at least a rank in it. The more of us that can talk our way out of situations the better. Plus, I am considering making Talon into an arcane archer, so sorcerer levels are a must for me. Might not be the most amazing sorcerer ever, but a fireball in your face is going to hurt if I have Charisma 13 or Charisma 130.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Something to get us out of this mess eh? Like that other boat? :D

The Hall might be the best place to go. In any case, it will be out of the plains here, and we might be able to find help for ourselves and Elorin. First things first though, is everyone ok?

Male Elf Ranger 4

Windfavour, do something crazy! Anything to stop those bastards getting another shot off at us!

Despite it being a difficult set of shots, something had to be done to stop the officers. Talon comes up with one more idea. Someone would be steering the other ship. If he could hit that person... it might buy them some time.

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

Arrow 2 attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18
Arrow 2 damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Male Elf Ranger 4

But I thought I was Spartacus?

Male Elf Ranger 4

Next round actions:

With the fire contained for the moment, and the crew of the other ship needing violent encouragement to get the catapult working, his arrows were obviously having the impact that he wanted. Readying two more arrows, he lets them fly, aiming at the officers who are whipping the crew.

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

Arrow 2 attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
Arrow 2 damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

The first arrow misses horribly, flying wild and sinking into the depths of the sea, forever lost. The second however flies true, hitting its target.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Right, I think I have computed the bonuses right. If I am correct, then I have the current buffs and general modifiers

Bless (Banner Maiden and Normal Spell) +2 attack
Cat's Grace+2 attack
Rangers Favoured Enemy+2 attack and damage
Bow+2 attack and damage
Deadly aim-2 attack, +4 damage
Rapid shot -2 attack, but a second arrow

So I think I therefore have +4 attack compared to normal, and +6 damage as compared to normal thanks to all the buffs. That's slightly scary.

Talon sees that the fire seems to be more or less under control, and so changes his mind from fighting that to shooting more of the humans.

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

Male Elf Ranger 4

Watching lazily as the missile comes towards them, Talon is amazed at the tenacity of the people manning that engine. He had thought the initial bolts that he had loosed at them might have sufficed as a warning, but evidently not. He once more begins loosing bolts at those that are reloading and operating the catapult.

He aims carefully, trying to find the main person responsible for the catapult, and then looses a mighty arrow that flies true, striking another man down. My embelishment, but 30 points of damage with a single arrow is pretty impressive I think, assuming it crits.

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

Crit confirm Arrow 1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Additional crit damage: 2d8 + 8 ⇒ (5, 5) + 8 = 18

Arrow 2 attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Arrow 2 damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

Alas I believe that Thalas has Oneshot, otherwise my formula has been two points off on everything. If it turns out that I do have Oneshot, then please add 2 to all the numbers. Meaning at level 4 I am at +11 to hit even with Rapid Shot. Ah it is a good day!

Someone sort that fire out!

Male Elf Ranger 4

I believe I am still hasted, and forgot to add the bonuses that I should have had previously. My apologies. It is too late to ask for us to go back and recount it. So, my understanding is that we have Suny on the enemy ship in a lot of trouble, as well as some archers on the other boat causing us some trouble. I think some humans are in for a little hurt!

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

Arrow 2 attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Arrow 2 damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

Arrow 3 attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Arrow 3 damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16

Those shots are aimed for the archers at k47,k49 and k50. Hopefully that will drop the buggers. Would love to use my entangle spell, but that might have to wait till we get on the other boat or something.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Talon will target the officers or the witch again, assuming that they are alive still. Not sure whether my actions from before have been resolved so putting new ones in.

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Male Elf Ranger 4

Still here, just not got a lot to say.

Not sure if both of my pre stated actions have been resolved either, so just reading atm

Male Elf Ranger 4

All those buffs flying around, its great for an archer like me! It has also just occured to me that Maeve was from the Black Citadel...

Boat @ 100'

Searching for the witch (or Maeve). If I see her, then arrows will be flying towards her, otherwise I am hoping to hit an important officer or something

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17

Arrow 2 attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
Arrow 2 damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

Move action is to find a burning arrow of some kind for next time around

Boat @ point blank

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21 Searching for the flammable ammunition on their boat, then firing the burning arrow that I hope I was able to find.

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

Arrow 2 attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18
Arrow 2 damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

Male Elf Ranger 4

I would have opened fire at around 200 feet. Therefore that would be their range from us right now.

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 yikes

Round 1 actions:

I will take the siege weapon operators, the rest of you focus on the others, including their spotter. Can anyone see any more officers? Target them first!

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Arrow 2 attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Arrow 2 damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Arrow 2 crit confirm: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
If that crit confirms then
Arrow 2 additional damage: 2d8 + 14 ⇒ (7, 4) + 14 = 25

So 11 damage off the first arrow, and then potentially 40 off the second arrow. Not bad for a 4th level ranger :D

I am aiming as before stated at the catapult operators. The aim is to make them realise that to use it is certain death, and therefore frighten them off from the idea.

Male Elf Ranger 4

No we aren't. That we are dropping like flies doesn't help matters. What I am wondering is how we are doing compared to the dwarves, although I doubt that Chainmail will tell us that.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Grief does weird things to him. He is out for blood now, and that need will be assuaged.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Well there is that. We might get lucky and I only clip an officer. I kinda hope not. Think Talon might be slipping into evil...

Male Elf Ranger 4

Talon smiles grimly, it was about time.

Warning shot ready and firing captain

Assuming that the bannermaiden bonus and favoured enemy, and cats grace apply then.

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Arrow 2 attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Arrow 2 damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Those arrows will be aimed at any and all officers or people giving orders on the deck of the other boat. Not at the rowers.

If no change is seen, no banner etc then...

Arrow 1 attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Arrow 1 damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Arrow 2 attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Arrow 2 damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

rinse and repeat each round till the officers are dead or all resistance is destroyed.

If seltyn were to haste me at any point, then I get a third arrow, but we will deal with that another time.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

I ken. But if we had been more cautious with those castaways earlier, then Elorin would not be dead. I would sooner slavers and pirates are killed than we are to lose more of our own. That ship wants to intercept us, and is not flying a banner or standard to show who they claim allegiance to. I would rather they rethink that strategy. I am hoping that raising our own banner, and letting fly an arrow will perhaps force their hand a little. In any case, I do not advocate letting them any closer than they are now.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Anger flows through Talon as the idea that pirates might attack goes through his mind. He would not take it lying down. He speaks slowly, his voice rising as he goes.

I somehow doubt that these people mean well. Bannerwoman, raise your standard, we live or die once more this day. The only reason that this craft might wish to intercept us is to wish us harm. They are unannounced and do not fly a standard of their own. Do we wish to fall as our sister did? Do we wish to roll over like dogs and cower? We fire now and protect that which is ours. We protect our lives and those whom we love. Fire now, and may your aim be TRUE!
