Hello, all!

In our Rise of the Runelords game, a second player just dropped in these past few weeks. The player who dropped was a half-orc barbarian, so I am looking for a character to fill his role as a tank and front-line fighter. The other characters in the group are a human witch, a human oracle, and a dwarf bard (archaeologist). Everyone is still at 1st level.

A note would be that I will be much more likely to pick an application if its background is interesting, ties in well with the campaign setting (Varisia and the town of Sandpoint), and shows good roleplaying ability.

Players should read the Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide for information about the immediate setting and coming up with characters that tie in well. The guidebook Varisa Birthplace of Legends also has a lot to offer in the way of information and ideas for characters and backstories, although this resource is completely optional.

In this game, I am putting a heavy emphasis on roleplaying and exploring the setting and personal story arcs than on just bashing through the AP. This means that the pace might be more relaxed, but I think more fun, in depth, and rewarding.

I would like to maintain a posting requirement of at least one substantial post per day, although maybe not as heavily on the weekends. It completely fine if you need to not post for a stretch of time, but as long as you can be communicative about your availability.

Character Creation:

-1st Level
-20 Point Buy

-Average Starting Gold

-Max HP

-Races: Anything from the CRB. If you are a human, please specify your ethnicity (typically, inhabitants of Varisia will be other either of Chelaxian, Varisian, or Shoanti descent, and will have an easier time weaving a background story into the campaign setting). As described in the Inner Sea World Guide, your ethnicity choice might grant you an additional starting language; for example, Varisians all automatically speak Varisian as well as Common.

-Classes: All core and base classes, except for the Summoner, Gunslinger, Ninja, or Samurai.

-2 Traits + 1 Campaign Trait. Players should each select one campaign trait from the Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide or from pages 330-331 of the APG to tie their stories into their recent (or not so recent) arrival in Sandpoint. They should then select two other traits of their choice like normal from the APG or as an additional option from Varisia Birthplace of Legends.

Here is the current campaign thread.

Can't wait to read your applications. I'll make a decision on Saturday sometime if there is enough of a pool to choose from at that point Good luck!

Welcome to Sandpoint!

Located several miles north of Magnimar along the Lost Coast, the bustling coastal town of Sandpoint is busy and vibrant with the excitement of the upcoming Swallowtail Festival. Food vendors and peddlers of all kinds have set up stalls and carts throughout the market square and around the newly built Sandpoint Cathedral.

Several years ago, the old Cathedral burned down in a tragedy that claimed the life of the Cathedral's priest, Father Tobyn, and his beautiful daughter, Nualia. Father Tobyn was well-loved by the town's people, and his passing was mourned by all. Nualia was an exceptionable beautiful young Aasimar woman, who many say was blessed by the goddess Desna herself.

In honor of the completion of the new cathedral, the town is holding the Swallowtail Festival to renew the site's blessings from the gods, and the whole town is full of an immense amount of excitement. Much tragedy has befallen the town over the past years, something the townsfolk call the "Late Unpleasantness." Everyone is looking forward to a chance to relax and finally put the past behind them.

Each of you, for your own reasons, find yourselves in Sandpoint on the 22nd of the month of Rova, one day before the Autumnal Equinox, the date of the festival. With the festivities beginning in the morning, you have each made your way to one of the local taverns, the Rusty Dragon, in hopes of renting a room and filling your stomachs with some hot food.

This large wooden building, which overlooks the Turandarok River, is the first structure one encounters after crossing the southern bridge entrance into Sandpoint, marked by a sizable iron dragon that looms over travelers from the building's roof; time and weather have taken a toll on the sculpture's iron form, which undoubtedly is the source of the tavern's name.

The common room is chalk full with people. The bartender and owner is a beautiful young woman, who is busily bent over the stove adding different spices to a stew boiling away in its pot. She appears to be in her mid-twenties, and of possible Tian ancestry. A tattoo of a dragon and music notes covers her left arm, and a finely crafted rapier hangs loosely from her shapely hip. An elderly halfling woman, constantly on her feet, attempts to fetch drinks and food for the ever growing horde of patrons.

Hello, all!

Welcome to Rise of the Runelords! I am going to make the first post in the Gameplay thread imminently, so please go ahead and respond whenever you are ready.

The posting expectation that I would like for us to have is to try to make at least one substantial post every weekday, although more is totally fine, as well as posting on the weekend. If you need to miss a day or even a week, then that is totally fine. We can just decide to have you botted or put the game on hold. I should mention that I am planning on being away on vacation without internet for two weeks this summer, for a week starting this next Friday, and then again in mid August.

A quick note is that I would love to see short stat blocks such as the example one that I am using in your profile's classes/levels section for easy reference.

"The town of Sandpoint needs you!"

This is the recruitment thread for a game Rise of the Runelords that I am planning on running. I am looking for a well balanced party, both in terms of abilities and backgrounds, of exactly four players.

I've linked to pdfs of both down below for convenience.

In this game I am very exciting to put a heavy emphasis on roleplaying and exploring the setting and personal story arcs than on just bashing through the AP.

I'm super psyched to get this game off the ground and to looking at all of your applications. Feel free to ask me any questions, and have great time and good luck with your applications!

Alright, the discussion thread is open. What are people interested in doing? Is anyone interesting in GMing? I personally would strongly prefer to PC.

So I've been noticing a very common trend here on paizo.com: there are much more players than GMs. For every game that is offered a tremendous amount of people apply for positions in the party, especially with popular adventure paths like Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous. This makes it incredibly difficult to get into a game as a PC, let alone a game you want. With any luck, it will take you a handful of tries. For each of these games, you need to familiarize yourself with the setting and house rules, role up a character complete with a backstory, submit it, and await the GMs verdict on who is to be chosen for their game. This can be quite frustrating and time-consuming. It seems to me that the only way of getting into a game in any good amount of time with any control over the specifics is to run a game yourself. If you're into that, then great! Pbp tends to tailor very strongly towards GMs. They can offer up a setting, adventure, or AP that they are willing to run, and swarms of players turn up looking for a spot. All you have to do is take your pick. This has kind of forced me to spend all of my RPing time on here running games, which I enjoy, but a lot of the time I also get the urge to play as a PC.

I had the thought that it might be better to go about this business of getting into a game in a way closer to the way we do it IRL. Usually a group of about 5 people assemble all with an interest in playing Pathfinder, and then they work out the details together from there. Who is going to GM? Are we going to use an AP? If so, which one? What kind of characters can we create that will compliment each other and make the game more fun? And so on.

Is anyone interested in doing this kind of thing? After I describe generally what kind of game I would be interested in playing in, I was thinking that the first 4 people to take me up on it would form our group.

Here are the types of things that I would like to see from a Pathfinder game that I would play in. These things are very tweakable. I just that I would give people a general idea so that they can decide if we would be a good gaming fit. I would to see the expectation be that people post at least once a day, except perhaps weekends, or if they give fair warning in advance. I would like to stick to the world of Golarion, because I both like it and it's familiar. I would be down to play in either a homebrew or adventure path.

Let me know if this interests you. All of what was described above can be debated and changed. It will all be what the group decides upon together.

I look forward to hearing what you all think!

I'm looking for two players to replace the characters we just lost. The party right now consists of a human wizard, and a human barbarian. The game pretty much just started, and the PCs have not yet begun the Swallowtail Festival.

-2 Traits. One campaign trait from the Player's Guide or pages 330-331 of the APG, and one other trait. The only trait that comes to mind as unbalanced would be Rich Parents. Feel free to change the flavor of a non-campaign trait to fit your backstory.

"The town of Sandpoint needs you!"

This is the recruitment thread for the second game of Rise of the Runelords I am running. I'm looking for four adventures to undertake the quest of saving the town of Sandpoint from destruction. I'm more likely to pick your application if I think your background is interesting and you show good roleplaying ability than if your character is well optimized, though I do want the final party to be relatively balanced. I strongly disapprove of dump stats, unless you have a good reason for them that ties into your backstory. A score below an 8 counts as a dump stat in my book. I would like to maintain a posting requirement of at least once per day if possible, but absences are fine if you let me know in advance.

Feel free to ask me any questions!

Our Rise of the Runelords PbP game just lost our healer, so I thought that I would put out word for a replacement. We are in the middle of the first part of Burnt Offerings, so everyone is still first level. The town has just been attacked by goblins, and the players are currently fighting them off. You can check out the gameplay thread here.

The party right now consists of an elf wizard, a human ranger, and a half-elf alchemist.

I'm currently recruiting players for the Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beginner Box to be played PbP on roleplayinggames.net, who have a Star Wars dice roller built into their forums. You don't need to own the beginner box, or necessarily have any experience with Edge of the Empire. This is because we'll be learning the game as we go. The only requirement is that you be able to make at least 5 meaningful posts per week. I'd like to end up with about 4-6 players. If you're looking for something new to try, this game is absolutely excellent.

Here are the pre-generated characters. It's first come first serve! So far only 41-VEX has been taken. Please note that the character backgrounds are all the way at the back of the documents.

41-VEX - Droid Colonist

Lowhhrick - Wookie Hired Gun

Pash - Human Smuggler

Oskara - Twi'lek Bounty Hunter

Mathus - Human Technician

Sasha - Human Explorer

Is anyone interested in playing Star Wars: Edge of the Empire? I just recently got the game and am still getting acquainted with the rules. I probably couldn't GM, but I would definitely be down to play. If no one wants to play this system, I am also interested in playing Saga Edition.

I just started thinking about a sandbox campaign I would like run in a PbP. My GMing experience only extends to running APs, so I feel a little out of my depth. I'm looking for both general sandboxing advice and campaign specifics.

I would like it to be heavily player driven, and possibly more focused on roleplaying than combat. I'm unsure whether I should run it like a large single player campaign, or bring the PCs together. What would be a good location? I would like something urban, but there are so many cities to choose from. Korvosa immediately sprang to mind, but maybe Absalom or Magnimar would work better.

Discussion thread is open! I put a map of Sandpoint and a list of shops and locations which might be of interest to you off the top of my head in the Campaign Info. This is where I'll be placing things like handouts and the like. The current battle map will go up top along with the initiative order if there is room. For those of you who are curious, we will be using block initiative.

Hello everyone! I'm doing a run through of Paizo's adventure path Rise of the Runelords here on the forums. I'm looking for a well varied group of 4-5 players to take on the challenge and save the town of Sandpoint from destruction.

You should be ready to post at a rate of at least once per day so the game doesn't get bogged down especially during combat.

Character Creation:

Happy submissions!

Please refrain from posting here if you aren't one of the people who know who they are.

Hey, so we're playing Pathfinder, which you probably guessed. We'll start off using the beginner rules and premade characters before we move on to the full rules.

There are four characters to choose from. It's first come first pick.

Valeros Human Fighter (Neutral Good)

Merisiel Elf Rogue (Chaotic Neutral)

Kyra Human Cleric (Neutral Good)

Ezren Human Wizard (Lawful Neutral)

You will be bound to playing the alignment of your character. If you want to play a character who adventures for personal gain as opposed to helping people, then be the Rogue or the Wizard. If you want to be okay with breaking the law, don't be the Wizard. Just post with your choice of character. If you haven't already, make an account so you can post. We'll make aliases later.

Let me know if you have any question.

Is anyone interested in starting up a sandbox style game set Varisia? I've been wanting to involved in something like this for quite some time now, but people tend to be more interested in running APs. I'm already involved in quite a few PbPs, and I tend to post daily, at least. This is a Varisian gypsy character I threw together and am excited to play. I'm waiting to find out the starting location for the game before I post my background. Let me know if you have any interest in running or playing a game like this.

I've running a We Be Goblins PbP on the forums. I just picked up Maptool, and started using it. I made an image out of the Shipwreck from the the module and imported it into Maptool. I tried to adjust the grid so it lined up with the map, but it will only align with a small section of the map and be out of whack with the rest. No matter what I try I still can't get the whole thing to line up. I anyone could help that would be awesome.

If it makes a difference, here is the map I'm trying to use:

Male Game Master

His Mighty Girthness Chief Randwattle Gutwad has you summoned to the Moot House at the center of the village. A pompous overdressed goblin called Slorb greats you, pushing his lensless glasses up his nose. "Chief Gutwad waits."

He opens the door and you enter a large room filled with trophies of Licktoad heroics; Stolen Weapons, Shiny treasure and the pickled bodies of small furry animals adorn the walls and shelves of the large room. At the centre of the room you see him, Chief Rendwattle Gutwad. He has squeezed his wide girth onto a six foot high teeter chair: his throne. The chief never speaks to anyone but his advisor Slorb, and then only in whispers because the words that come out of his mouth are so mighty that they may frighten away all the words in the heads of lesser goblins.

"Hit the dirt!," barks Slorb. A great honer!! As you sit down the chief begins to speak in a booming voice that fills the room.

“You all be heroes. Each of you. You are best Licktoads but for me. And maybe but for Slorb. That you aren’t fleeing in terror from mighty sound of my voice is all the proof you should need. Yet soon, all Licktoad goblins will know your might, for I have
picked you for a dangerous mission.

“You know about fireworks and map we found in Scribbleface’s hut. Fireworks were fun. But map is more fun. It shows a route to a place near the coast where Scribbleface found fireworks. And it says there are more fireworks there! “I want them for Licktoads. You all go get them tomorrow. Tonight we have big bonfire to burn bad luck away from you, and we play many games. Much fun. Tomorrow you fetch me fireworks. If you meet men, you make them dead. If you meet dogs, you make them dead. If you meet horses, you make them dead. If you meet Lotslegs Eat Goblin Babies Many, you maybe should run. And if you not find fireworks, you not come back or we feed you to Squealy Nord!"

Now is a great time to introduce your characters.

Male Game Master

Here is the discussion thread. We should get started with the game in about a week.

You are goblins of the Licktoad tribe, who live deep in Brinestump Marsh, south of the hated man-town called Sandpoint. Once, other goblins tried to burn Sandpoint down, and they would have been legends if they had succeeded. But they didn’t bring enough fire, and got themselves killed as a result.

Yesterday, your tribe discovered that one of your own had been using forbidden arts and was engaged in one of the greatest of taboos—writing things down. In fact, rumor holds that what he was writing was a history of your tribe! There’s no swifter way to bring about bad luck than stealing words out of your mind by writing them down, and so your tribe had no choice. You branded the goblin’s face with letters to punish him, which is why everyone calls him Scribbleface now, and then you ran him out of town, took all of his stuff, and burned down his hut.

That’s where things got interesting, because before you all burned down his hut, Chief Gutwad found a weird box within the building. Inside was a map and a lot of fireworks—fireworks that immediately came to use in burning the hut down. Then, this morning, Gutwad announced that tonight there would be a feast in order to drive out any lingering bad luck from Scribbleface’s poor decisions. But perhaps even more exciting, all of you have been secretly invited to meet at Chief Gutwad’s Moot House. Why would the chief want to speak to you? It can only mean that he’s got an important mission foryou all... one that the other goblins of the tribe couldn’t pull off. This could be your chance to go down in
Licktoad history!

I'll be recruiting for We Be Goblins!. I'm looking for four 1st-level players. I'm only allowing material from the CRB and APG, with the exception of material published by Paizo specifically for goblins, like to the Dogslicer, or goblin racial traits. I may be willing to make exceptions. I'm a new GM, so be patient with me.

Creation Rules:

  • Level One
  • 15 Point Buy
  • All classes from CRB and APG, except for Wizard, since goblins have a fear of writing.
  • 2 Traits.
  • Average starting wealth for your class.
  • You should be able to post at least once a day.

Any clerics should worship Zarongel, the god of dog killing, fire, and mounted combat. His domains are Animal, Evil, Fire, and Travel.

I big part of the fun is going to be the fact that we are playing goblins, on of the most amazingly fleshed out races in Pathfinder. Be sure to have an appropriate backstory and for your character. You get bonus ponts if you come up with your own goblin song!

Let me know if you have any questions. I'm very excited to run this adventure, and think it's going to be a blast! If this turns out well, I may run Jade Regent for the same group if people are interested.

I'm toying with the idea of starting up a homebrew campaign on the forums. Any suggestions about how I should run tactical combat?

I'm going to be starting a homebrew Pathfinder campaign with a sandbox feel for some friends of mine. I've never run a Pathfinder game before, and I don't have a lot of experience running other RPGs. I've run a few DnD 4e modules, but that's about it. We are going to start playing in a about a week or so, and I'm unsure as to how I should prepare.

I'm starting small with my setting, limiting everything I prepare to the city of Lyrios, which lies on the coast of the main continent of Alara. Until a few years ago, Lyrios was part of a large empire which was ruled by a line of sorcerer kings. Then, the king disappeared, leaving no heir. Now the country is a collection of small nations and city states, all trying to carve out a piece of the former empire.

I'm lost at how I should begin. I'd like to get my PCs involved doing something, but I don't want to railroad them.

I would gladly appreciated any help or suggestions. General game mastering advice would also be helpful.

I'm looking for someone to GM a Star Wars Saga Edition campaign PbP. In another thread I found a couple others who had some interest, but none us want to GM, or haven't spoke up.

Potential GMs
If you are interested in GMing, leave a post with a campaign idea. The position goes to the applicant with the best idea. The only criterion is that we start at 1st-level. The rest is up to you.

Potential Players
If you're interested in playing (not GMing), just leave a post. I'll make note of you if we aren't yet full. I'll PM you when we select a GM.

I was wondering if anyone would be interested starting either a Pathfinder or Star Wars Saga Edition play by post campaign. I recently bought the core rulebooks for both games and am interested in trying one or the other out. I don't think I would want to GM, I'm relatively new to these games.

Let me know if you're interested in playing, or perhaps GM-ing!
