![]() I'm just about to start running The Lost City on the boards here. It looks very good. Courts was fantastic fun from start to finish and has a ton of replay value as no party will approach the challenges in the same way. I absolutely agree that 4e is a structural dream for the GM. I'm not a huge mechanics bunny, and I am a drama person, so it suits me perfectly. I can encourage role play and create potentially lethal encounters. ![]()
![]() The group spend the next days in preparation for their venture into the wild lands of the Kargzant. Seraphiel, still grim from his discoveries in the Library, takes his leave. "I must find out what evil I unleashed in my earlier life. That may be the purpose of my current existence. There is a pattern in these things, always." For Gobi, the parting is a far happier one. Promising faithfully to rejoin his comrades, he is spending some time with Roswitha to her huge and evident delight. Blushing furiously, he explains a little about dwarven courtship. "She's going to introduce me to her parents and that means I have to bring a gift showing how much I value her. I was going to give her the parts of the big ring I found. Magister Weltmann says they're priceless and that's how I feel. But then I thought that broken bits might not look quite right, so I'll have to think again. Vel had better take them and look after them for now," he burbles happily. "I have to convince her parents that I'm serious and worthy as a suitor before they'll even think of accepting me, so you see..." His voice trails off in an unspoken apology at his desertion of his old friends. For Whiteclaw, there is the comfort of another note from Hroaldr confirming that her dragon egg is still doing well, ..."although I think it would be a good idea for you to return for the hatching. Still a few months away, we think, but don't leave it too long. The lads and I at the Lodge will do our best, but we're not the ones chosen to raise this dragon. Give my good wishes to Pirot, if you managed to find him." For Arianwyn, there is a bittersweet parting with Narissa. Spoiler: An evening spent in song and reminiscence ends on an odd note, as she breaks suddenly from his embrace. "I hope that we shall meet again, dear love, but I sense you will be singing for my bones when the time to do so comes." Then she laughs and pulls him close once more. "The better reason that our time should be well spent." ![]()
![]() The vintner does not deign to reply to Kia's comment, but the reveler shows how very drunk he is by blowing a loud raspberry at Arianwyn. "Party pooper," he yells. Thanks to Kia's intervention, Whiteclaw is able to get a swipe in at the reckless reveler. Basic melee via Kia (1d20+8=17, 1d10+5=8) Even hampered by the fumes, her blow bloodies the dwarf and he looks at her, his benign expression changing in a twinkling to one of slurred aggression. "You're not my friend any more," it blurts at her, wrapping its arms around her and breathing into her face. With a snarl, the gnoll breaks free of his grip and bares her teeth. Immediate interrupt when first bloodied. On hit target is grabbed. (1d20+15=28, 1d10+6=9). 9hp damge to Whiteclaw and she is grabbed until escape. Athletics v Fort to escape Grab (1d20+9=25). Escaped easily, but elected to stay next to the reveler, the better to hit him as soon as she can. Reason, Gobi and Seraphiel Spoiler:
The thick grape vines on the wooden structures seem to be getting thicker. Possibly even moving. Gobi - 3 ongoing psychic damage (se); -2 to movement and attacks; dazed to start R1's next turn

![]() Sorry about that. I left Reason off earlier as well. I must have missed when I was doing the initial map. Seraphiel's attack merely adds brightness to the pastoral idyll, but does not hit the impeccably coiffed dwarf. The drunken revelers reel towards the party exuding alcoholic fumes of such potency that those within range feel half drunk themselves. Aura 3. Those within the aura take a -2 movement penalty and -2 attack penalty (not cumulative). Currently affecting everyone except Vel, Arianwyn, S3 and S4. R1 launches bursts into song "Pour another cup, mine appears to be dry
Cheer all ye up, no reason to look grim
And all call:
Hoorah!"
Spoiler:
Merry song courtesy of Google search and Adrian H Wood here The effect is both tuneful and strangely horrible. With the exception of Kia, who finds herself unaffected and Arianwyn who is sensibly out of range, the sound simply boggles you. Drinking Song v Will (only enemies). On hit target is dazed to start of Reveler's next turn. Versus Vel, Seraphiel, Kia, Whiteclaw, Gobi, Reason (1d20+8=23, 1d20+8=28, 1d20+8=9, 1d20+8=17, 1d20+8=18, 1d20+8=26)
R2 seems to find Arianwyn's non-participation offensive and points at him. "You're missing the party!" he slurs. The warlock feels, rather than sees the attack coming and with an arrogance to rival the vintners, shrugs the attack aside. Vel - dazed to start R1's next turn

![]() Your adventures on Pharoe bring you no little fame among the druid enclave of Riggarth. Even these notoriously cautious souls permit themselves a measure of excitement at your findings on the island, and among the townsfolk you become increasingly well known figures. Opinion on your exploits is divided. "Heroes" is one description. "Meddling fools" is another. A few people have even been heard to say that interfering in the affairs of gods will bring some following doom, but they are in a minority. Arianwyn and Kia turn many heads as they walk the streets accompanied by Vel and Whiteclaw. Few people have met any eladrin at all and in truth you are a striking group. Both the eladrin attract admiring and sometimes speculative looks at their fey beauty. Vel is also not without admirers, although her scathing response to such approaches causes as much amusement to her friends as irritation to the notoriously short-tempered mage. Naysayers among the populace still have doubts about Whiteclaw - old tales of savage gnoll attacks are still the stuff of nightmares after all - but few would deny that she's earned her place in the community. "Old fool Hroaldr may have got it right with one gnoll. But I'm not standing for him building up a whole tribe of them." seems to be the general opinion. As for the old fool Hroaldr himself, his delight knows no bounds. "I knew there something going on with those stones and see how right I was to follow my instincts." He is virtually crowing with joy as Vel unpacks her carefully made tracings. These are, after all, the only extant evidence that the runes ever existed. One sadness you must all face is the parting with Anarak. During the voyage home, his silence became profound and when you landed, he turned to you all and announced he was returning to his own people. "I've been away too long. Dragonborn need their clans. You are dear and worthy companions, but I cannot stay here. I must be among my own kind." No words of yours will dissuade him, and it was with acceptance in your hearts that you gather to watch him sail away in Curlew when she next leaves port. Gobi however, is content to remain a while among the druids. He and Hroaldr already share a love of the Fruitful Bloom's cider and now the paladin discovers a scholar's side to himself he never knew existed. Increasingly the dwarf spends more and more time with Hroaldr, the pair of them poring over ancient documents and checking facts. They will not discuss their discoveries, but as the days pass, they disappear for longer and longer periods. ![]()
![]() Vel Spoiler:
Thanks for that. Edited previous post. Vel's arcing flames miss kobold 2 who jumps nimbly aside. His companion is less fortunate and the luckless creature is temporarily engulfed. For a moment he looks as if he'd like to flee, but a snarled command from the duergar halts him in his tracks. Edging round the side of the glade, Baldrech loads his bow again and aims at the duergar's head. Baldrech to K12 The shot flies true, but the duergar brushes it aside and steps forward, hefting his warhammer and confronting Whiteclaw. "You toy with things you cannot understand. But you will understand this. The wrath of Zemeboh will smite you where you stand." The warhammer thuds into Whiteclaw's chest and bursts into flame, leaving the gnoll gaping at the appalling wound and scarcely able to stand. Spoiler: Duergar cleric attack on Whiteclaw: (1d20 11=21, 1d10 3=12) 12 damage from the hammer and an ongoing 4 fire damage. He invoked Infernal Anger as a minor action. |
