Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Absalom docks, the Stately Parody

The captain stares at Karen, Ma'am, you suggested it, not I. Quite frankly, that'd be more of a distraction and hindrance for my crew. They're expected to take care of their own business between ports.

He takes a look at her lack of equipment, what are you going to guard? The apple barrel?

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Absalom docks, the Stately Parody

Karen and Grissfold return, with Kelsen between them, arms around their shoulders.

Grissfold shouts out to the captain and relays his experience. It's obvious though that many of the crew seem to be a bit happier, the effects of Karen's magic having extended to the Stately Parody.

The captain looks Kelsen over, Are you good to sail?

Aye captain, just need to get me sea legs! Kelsen shakes off the support of Karen and Grissfold as he stands up straight, with only a slight wobble. I'm a bit hungry, but I'll do.

Very well, go see Cookie. Then get to your post! Manx turns to Karen and Grissfold, tell you what, a healer would normally get a gold per day. We expect to be at sea for a week to ten days. What else are you willing to do for passage? By my count that still leaves you with 340 gold owed for the voyage.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Absalom pier, next to the Stately Parody

A healer? Well now, why didn't you say so before hand? The captain darts an arm out and grabs onto a passing sailor, these days passage would run you 350 gold for the trip. If'n you can take care of sprains and strains, I'll give you a discount. First, prove yourself.

The captain nods to the sailor he'd stopped, Grissfold here will take you to someone. Heal him and bring him back.

The sailor gives a curt aye, captain before turning to you and waving a hand up the pier, this way please.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

The captain stands on the pier bellowing orders to the stevedores as they load several casks onto a pallet attached to a yardarm. Sailor's scurry around the ship on various tasks. Several are seen scampering through the rigging as the ship prepares for departure.

A large half-orc stands to the side and just behind the captain with his arms folded across his massive bared chest.

The human captain, waves a clipboard, get those casks secured! Where's Jenkins? Jenkins!

A rotund halfling runs to the top of the gangway, you called captain?

Aye, get started on the evening meal. Captain's favor for everyone if we're ready to go early. The intensity of the crew kicks up a notch at the captain's word.

Well? You just going to stand there? What do you want?

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Oh, I just need it dropped off with a Caldaru named Ubutori in Senghor, shouldn't be too difficult for someone of your esteemed capabilities. Manx quirks an eyebrow back at his two servants, them? No, they're with me. I expect that you should be able to handle this on your own.

Manx stands, it's been a pleasure, as always. Adieu.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Location?

Manx raises an eyebrow to Tessara, yes? questions, you have?

Looking around, he heads for a pair of chairs before a window and flops down into one, sitting overly relaxed.

As a reminder, the scroll does indeed show as magical, as it should. The chest appears to radiate no magical aura under detect magic. And yes, Lord Serimus has several magical items on him, covering the spectrum of auras.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Aiden returns to Tessara, another man following behind.

Mistress, Lord Serimus heard of your need. He has asked for an audience.

The man pushes forward, Yes, I had heard that you were in need of a certain item, but were temporarily, I am sure, short of the funds necessary to acquire said item. He dismissively waves a rolled scrolled he holds in his hand. I have that item here. A small favor, and it is yours!

Lord Serimus snaps his fingers and two men come come into the room, each holding the handle of a small chest. It looks like either could have carried the chest by themselves, it is rather small, only a foot and a half wide, and about a foot tall and thick.

They set the chest down and retreat to stand to each side of the door. I am in need of secure transportation of this chest. You are in need of a means of travel. Deliver the chest for me, and our deal is done. I trust your word as a Crusader in service to Queen Galifrey.

He places the scroll on the chest and steps to the side. Deliver the chest within a fortnight and I'll consider your word fulfilled.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Light streamed through a stained glass window, casting its colored rays across the room. Dressed in the formal robes of a priest, the man looked at the disheveled traveler across from him. Between them a grand oak desk with gold and silver inlays stood as a massive symbol of the power of the priest.

The traveler stood nervously, eyes darting between the dark cloth wrapped object sitting on the desk and his master.

A-as you said, the city was empty. I followed your directions and found the tunnel. The building, it was nearly filled with sand. As I was preparing to leave, a large dragon was flying overhead. I hid and watched. The dragon was soon joined by several other figures, two on a flying carpet. Yet another stood on a hill near the center of town and thousands of floating orbs burst from his hand and flew throughout the town.

The priest stares at the traveler, waiting.

Gulping, the traveler continues his tale, I did what you said, and hid. The talisman you gave me did as you said. When some of the orbs flew into the room I hid in they, well they just popped, like a soap bubble, and disappeared. I waited a day and a night before leaving. I saw no other sign of them.

The priest reached a finger forward and idly nudged a small metallic orb sitting on the desk next to the cloth wrapped package. Quite a few orbs, for the talisman is completely drained.

He next turned his attention to the package. The very reason why he was here. It didn't look like much. Black velvet wrapped around a bundle. The priest opened a drawer and pulled out a pair of slim gloves. Quickly donning the gloves he carefully unwrapped the bundle, pulling each corner of the black velvet back.

Spread across the center of the velvet, and cleanly displayed were several pieces of what looked like a clay tablet with glyphs written across them. Frowning the man looked at the pieces for a moment before gently shifting them around. Satisfied he looked and saw that they formed a disk, about 18 inches in diameter when whole. Now in several large pieces. The glyphs were now seen to be written concentrically around the disk in a spiral. There is a piece missing! The center of the disk was a hole that looked like it would be about 3 inches across. Where is this piece? The priest glared at the traveler while pointing to the empty space.

I do not know! That is all that was there! I swear! On all that I hold holy! There was nothing more! The traveler cringed, fully expecting a backlash.

The priest pulled a glove off and wiped his hands across his face, Without the keystone, the glyph's true meaning can't be revealed. You must do better next time.

The wall behind the priest held a large mural map of the entire known world, spanning over ten feet in height and half again as much long, the detail was surprising. National borders were outlined as well as pin points of the major cities. The priest activated a rune in the map's legend. Magical energy flowed across the map. Most of Rahadoum fell dark and clouded. A large scar like area on the Tandak Plains in Taldor had also darkened.

Your next mission will be rather daunting. You will need to travel to Nidal. Going through Cheliax would be best. You will need to seek an audience with Visceroth. The priest walks over to a cabinet and pulls a pack from within. Everything you need is in here, wages included. Your boat sails within the hour.

As you command. The traveler accepts the pack and leaves.

After the traveler leaves, the priest wraps up the broken disk, and walks to a stone wall. He mutters an incantation before the stone wall. The stone rippled and flowed like water, pulling back and away from a door, solid metal, and dull in appearance. Opening the door, the priest stepped into a small room behind the door lined with shelves stacked with books, scrolls, and ancient artifacts. Against the back wall a solid shelf with nine spaces stood nearly empty. One was already filled with a satin wrapped package, much like the one the priest held. Carefully sliding the broken disk into one of the spaces the priest sighed, too soon, too soon. These seals should have held much longer.

The scene fades from view. In the morning you wonder, a dream, or a vision...

My character will be able to provide a front behind which the organization can operate, aka Universal Exports. The power behind the throne of course, nothing else will satisfy! Seriously, I'm thinking that he has simply found that crime provides the intellectual adrenaline that he needs while he continues what is otherwise rather boring and tedious arcane research. A wizard has many options for escape, from teleportation to invisibility, flight, transformations, and what I expect to be a personal favorite, charming dupes to do the dirty work for me.

OC... I've always wanted to play an anti-hero. I think this would be a good setting for it.

Concept is a smuggler, every OC needs someone that specializes in getting the goods from point a to point b without the watch finding out. This would be a wizard, one that runs a respectable shop by day, smuggling at night.

If this sounds interesting, I'll work on the crunch.

Sounds interesting, color me in, have to think of a toon to fit in with twilsemail's answers.

Do I get to keep the profits from everyone that buys a MUM?

I am after all happy to sell my own MUM.

I also have MILF's for sale! (Mum's In Light Fuschia, get your mind out of the gutter!)

:)

For those wanting to play a landwalker...

"Step right up, step right up, look and see how my lovely assistant is enjoying herself in this giant container of water! As you can see she is under no discomfort! You too can enjoy the beauties of life beneath the surface!

For only 2000 gold I will happily provide you one of my patent pending! mask of underwater methods, or MUM. This handy device provides an everlasting supply of air while you pursue your watery explorations!

Now, who will be the first to own MUM?"

Air bubble: wizard 1 spell, face slot, continuous use. Gold 2000 x 1 x 1 = $2000 gold

would llove to get into a gurps game, it is by far my favorite. I have nearly 200 books from 3rd and 4th, hard edition and pdf.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

link?

From d20pfsrd, which takes it from the core book:

"It retains the appearance, Hit Dice, base attack bonus, base save bonuses, skills, and feats of the normal animal it once was, but is now a magical beast for the purpose of effects that depend on its type. Only a normal, unmodified animal may become a familiar."

"Use the basic statistics for a creature of the familiar's kind, but with the following changes."

"Attacks: Use the master's base attack bonus, as calculated from all his classes. Use the familiar's Dexterity or Strength modifier, whichever is greater, to calculate the familiar's melee attack bonus with natural weapons. Damage equals that of a normal creature of the familiar's kind." Bold mine

"Saving Throws: For each saving throw, use either the familiar's base save bonus (Fortitude +2, Reflex +2, Will +0) or the master's (as calculated from all his classes), whichever is better. The familiar uses its own ability modifiers to saves, and it doesn't share any of the other bonuses that the master might have on saves." bold mine

"Skills: For each skill in which either the master or the familiar has ranks, use either the normal skill ranks for an animal of that type or the master's skill ranks, whichever is better. In either case, the familiar uses its own ability modifiers. Regardless of a familiar's total skill modifiers, some skills may remain beyond the familiar's ability to use. Familiars treat Acrobatics, Climb, Fly, Perception, Stealth, and Swim as class skills." Bold mine

Note that the table of level improvement for familiars applies to both animal and improved. All of the rules noted above would also apply to improved familiars.

Therefore, we know that a familiar is based on the base creature. A creature with a template can not be used, as only the base creature qualifies. Notice that for saving throws it references the master's class adjustments but still states the familiar is using only the base save, which is listed.

In addition to these points, you can look online, there are many threads covering this area, including here on paizo's site.

I personally think it sucks since it means that the higher the level of the wizard, the more of a liability the familiar becomes.

Familiars don't advance beyond the table, they don't get skill points, feats, etc, allowing one to level up makes them more powerful than cohorts

@lordzack, you must have missed the posts that this is not the time for character concepts.

@EntropyRules What Tenro said.

I am actually looking forward to the role play aspect of running macro scale events.

I have no problem playing one, probably NE. Though in that case I might go with an aasimar that resents her heritage and goes her own way as a godless cleric with darkness and liberation/travel domains.

Sounds like a cool game, and I am going to present two options, since I could go with either and be happy as a part of the game.

Name: Manx is just a filler for now.

Race: Wayang but could make do with a core class as well
Age: 21
Alignment: TN
Class break down: straight up wizard.
Role filled*: Arcane, the magic against magic, others can play steel vs steel.
Background: For someone with an affinity to the shadow planes, the night sky, and the moon have always had a certain pull. With the recent reactivation of the portal, an opportunity to study the moon and the abyss is too much of an opportunity to not get an invite on the expedition.

Generally pragmatic, he has found that doing good deeds in the community forestalls allegations of the means that he often finds expedient in his studies. And it never hurts to have the locals consider you friendly. The pitchforks at midnight is just so cliche'. Save the farmer's daughter and nobody is too concerned about the odd missing traveler.

The second option follows the same general idea but is a rogue/shadow dancer filling the position of skill monkey/face.

Out of curiosity, what is your primary language? Your English has more than a few grammatical errors.

Interesting choice.

Ape is CR 2, HD 3. It has Str 15, dex, 15, con 14, int 2, wis 12, cha 7.
Awaken adds 2 HD, changes the int to 3d6, and adds 1d3 to cha. Awakened adds +1 CR.

The way I am assuming that the DM is going to rule is that template CR is added after determining level for base creature HD/CR. Otherwise is just kinda pushes everyone to pick something they can stack a free template on.

For the awakened ape, you would be HD 4, CR +1, classes 20. Wealth of 22.

Since you are using something other than normal PC races, no point buy, so your max int is 18, wis 12, cha max 10. Hope you are going for a non-caster.

Going to be some interesting challenges for you, besides specialized clothing/armor. Do you sleep in the stable or the inn? :)

Isn't Aasimar already half celestial?

Resident wizard coming as well.

wish is a slightly cheaper method of using a tome, note they are both an inherent bonus, which doesn't stack.

My question would be, assuming the caster has item creation feats, would said caster pay build cost or retail cost?

I understand, I was thinking of a wizard as well, but that's a lot of work for what amounts to a one-shot game.

@Azharten How are you getting those stats? Assuming you spent your level-ups in Int, then you have +5 Int from leveling, +5 from a tome, +6 from the hat for a total of +16, from a score of 38, that means your start was 22, which is 2 points higher than possible.

Then, all of your other stats are at 20's, for which you have only the hat/belt giving a +6, which means they started at 12 plus the racial +2.

Five stats at 12 is 2x5, 10 points. Leaving 10 points for your Int, which would give you a 16, +2 from race, +6 from the hat, +5 from the tome, +5 from leveling up, for a total of 34.

The highest I know of that an Int score can go for a player character with only a +2 racial is: 17 points to buy a start of 18, +2 racial, +5 level up, +5 tome, +6 hat; totaling 36.

dotting for interest, more to come after i get to work...

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Round 2, Init 11 (AC 13/12/11 HP 20, CMD 12)

De'ohge raises his hand, palm up, and chants a few arcane words. As he chants two glowing blue balls spring into existence, crackling with energy. Gesturing at one of the zombies chewing on Tobin, the two balls spiral off through the air impacting on the zombie (#3).

Magic Missile 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 1) + 2 = 5

Posting interest with an upgraded version of this character, the game for which has died an unseemly death.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

ditto!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I dislike a requirement to provide an extensive background and complete character just to apply to a pbp.

The GM is asking me for hours of time invested with no guarantee of a return.

There are stocks in swamp land that provide better investments.

Good luck to all that apply.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Arizona,
No preference,
As Jennis is from a noble background, he and Hagin could certainly run in the same circles. Ditto with Barak, and Trane. Looks like the four of them would easily be a small group of youngish noble friends that run around together, especially as it seeks we are all black sheep. Don't have a connection to Yvette off the top of my head.

As for the last trait, I'd like Greater Adept of the Society (though Wayfarer may be replaced with something more appropriate), giving an additional 0-level spell slot.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hero Lab looks cool, I just don't like having to pay twice for everything, once to buy the book/pdf from paizo, and again to use it in HL.

I'm trying to get my group to consider breaking each pathfinder hex into seven smaller hexes or adjust the one development only. 124 square mile farms just don't make much sense for a fantasy environment, at 18 square mile hexes it starts getting closer to historical precedents.

What I'd like to consider is adding a set of rules to loosely govern what happens when you have a district full of monuments, or your city of four districts only has one tavern. My group has been talking about setting up some role play guidelines for consequences of not having certain types of buildings in a district or city.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

rofl, the group dynamic is certainly entertaining

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

so there were how many thousands waiting outside that gate?

At 1/8 CR each that comes out to...

:)

Just kidding!

why would you want to take a staggered approach like this?

It seems like you are hamstringing yourself from the beginning. You are either asking someone to lurk for possibly months of real time, or read months worth of posts to step into an existing role.

Not to mention that if they are taking over NPC's, then either they have to try and role play as the NPC was played, or the character will go through a drastic personality change for no apparent reason.

Pbp games will (unfortunately) often see a change of players throughout a campaign due to the length of time involved.

As the GM, you will also have a harder time balancing the encounters since they are designed with the classic 4-player party.

As a player, I would have no problem stepping into an ongoing game to replace a player that has gone MIA, but I would prefer to have my character walk onstage while the MIA character leaves.

In one game I am still playing (3 years now! and the game started two years before I joined!), we had a player leave for personal reasons, the GM had her character shot, only when the player returned a (real-time) a year later, we find that the shooting was staged, rescued the character and continued on our journey.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Manx nods in agreement with Radoslav, and finds himself surprised to do so, yes, just what I was thinking. To the boats!

Manx checks his gear once again, making sure he is ready to go.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Manx is as well.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Could Manx find a scroll of levitate in town?

Expenditures:

70g material cost for (3)1st lvl spells into spell book, 1 used for Flaming Sphere 2nd lvl.
80g climb kit.
12.5g scribe scroll of disguise self.
37.5g materials to scribe scrolls (3 1st lvl)
.5g bag, waterproof

Total spent: 200.5g

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

aye

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

by my count we have 6 players, of whom only 3 have mounts? Worst case, we wait until I can trade my 4th level slots for dimension door, I can take 2 mediums or 1 large on each trip.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

is there a map anywhere, I seem to have lost place of where anyone is

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Let's see about getting some gear then.

Manx finishes off his mug 'mead and tosses a couple of gold on the table to cover the meal.

Manx tips his hat at the others, until morning then.

Manx will head out and look to purchase; a waterproof bag, climber's kit, (2) levitate scrolls, and spell copying materials.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

[ooc]Only need one levitated person, with a rope...[/dice]

The wizard looks up from the journal to rest his gaze on Pik. "I can see you suggesting a lumberjack need not cut down trees for lumber."

Manx raises his mead to his lips while he looks about the group, his eyes traveling from the warrior decked out in heavy plate, to the erstwhile, well he really hadn't quite pegged Raddie's occupation, maybe adventuring taxidermist?
His eyes settled on Elransil, probably the most graceful of the group, "Unless sir wisdom can climb cliffs, I think this task would fall to you, how are you with knots?"

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

"Looks like we will need some rope and climbing gear. And I should probably see if there is someone with a spell of levitation."

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

my apologies, I thought my actions were clearly stated, since Sephird could move to flank he would do so, and attack. If he could not flank, then he would step back to continue ranged attack.
Thus he dropped the bow, stepped forward while drawing his weapons, and critically stabbed the goblin with his rapier, causing 6 damage.

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Knowing his companions will soon be arriving, Manx arranges for a private dining table with a hearty meal ordered.

A bottle of warm mead sits on the table with a candle casting flickering light across the shadows of the alcove. Manx relaxes against the back wall of the dining alcove rolling a mug of the warmed mead back and forth breathing in the rising steam of the honeyed spices. Tsuto's journal lies open before him and occasionally a page turns itself as he reads through the last thoughts of a deeply disturbed young man.

As his companions enter the room he will briefly flash a dimly glowing sigil over the table to draw their attention.

"As soon as the others have gathered we may discuss our next steps. In the mean time, help yourself, the kitchen will have dinner ready shortly."

the magical effects are within the realm of prestidigitation

Awesome job on this!

Male Human (Varisian) Wizard 2

Manx will wander about town, making small talk with the residents, trying to gauge the emotions and feelings of the townfolk.

He will also make small purchases at the businesses, in part to be an inquiring customer more than an idle busybody. He keeps his purchases to child friendly items that he hands out to those kids he comes across before it is time to meet up with the others.
