I think the key aspect of this is the spell itself. The 4th rank version of silence specifically makes a 10 foot emanation around the target of the spell normally. So let's look at the rules for all parts.

P.S I really need to learn forum posting code. /Facepalm

Rulebook wrote:
An emanation issues forth from each side of your space, extending out to a specified number of feet in all directions. For instance, the bless spell’s emanation radiates 15 or more feet outward from the caster. Because the sides of a creature’s space are the starting point for the emanation, an emanation from a Large or larger creature affects a greater overall area than that of a Medium or smaller creature. Unless the text states otherwise, the creature creating an emanation effect chooses whether the creature at its center is affected.

Silencing shot itself has a 25 (DC). Now you are correct it does not list what the DC is for but imo you correctly parsed what should have been done. It's not a reflex save, since that would be the avoiding of something more visable in nature. It isn't resisting a poison or other physically inhibiting ailment. This really only leaves a mental alignment or a loss of senses, which, I believe, silencing shot would qualify under.

The only other aspect of this then becomes how does it affect the target?

As mentioned earlier it creates a 10 foot emanation. The spell also itself has a 1 minute duration when used on a friendly target.

Using the TGTBT principle, I think we can agree this would be too long of a effect. I think you have ruled well for a duration, but it's also ignores the emanation effect, because the ammunition specifically calls out that it should.

Great discovery. I believe this should get an errata to clarify. Also, this strikes me as the kind of ammo that should have ranked versions.

Thanks for the detailed response! I agree that it should very likely have higher ranked versions (especially if there's a DC). It came out in Guns & Gears, so I think it's possible that it hasn't gotten errata'd because of Remaster shenanigans, but it could have also just flown under the radar.

Silver Crusade

So we were playing in a campaign and had reached the final boss, and my Gunslinger shot them with a Silencing Shot. We saw there was a DC for the shot, but... not what the DC was for; a Will save? Reflex save to avoid it? The Perception check to notice a lack of sound in the area? The spell, Silence, doesn't have a saving throw associated with it (because it can only be cast on a willing target, thus the bullet overrides that application).

I haven't seen any errata for it and I can't find that anyone else has had this issue with it. While it DOES seem ludicrous to allow the spell to just work on an enemy, the DC 25 is a touch low for a level 11 item. There's a lot of weirdness around this, but it IS nice to be able to attempt to silence an enemy - any ideas or weigh-ins on the DC and its intent for this one, folks of the forums?

Edit: For clarity, we did just rule it as a Will save at the time, and if the enemy failed it'd last for 1d8 rounds. This is just to bring other folks' attention to it and get clarity if anyone else has had to provide it.

Making more spells NOT be touch range is only a good thing for most casters, that it changes one spell usage for one class does not mean the entire remaster has fallen to despair. If shocking grasp was THE go to option then it *should* go tbh. No one spell should be the defining spell for any class, everyone should have options that are viable. Plenty of spells do, and will, still use spell attack and be perfectly fine for magus.

Saying this as someone who does play magus, I don't like the presumption that I'll always have the same spell load out on every magus I make, what's the point of other spells and the diversity of the system of my class won't work without one spell? (Spoilers, it works fine, I've had plenty of fun.)

Anyway, I love these changes and look forward to seeing more, lots of interesting interactions on the way! I really like the new light-plus-dancing-lights combo.

Silver Crusade

Like it says on the tin, we're getting pretty close to the release of the Player and GM Core coming out, and subscribers tend to get theirs a little early so there's earlier charges, etc.

I know that in one of the streams it was mentioned that we'd hear more about how the payment issue for two books coming out in the core line at once would be handled, but has it been clarified somewhere and I can't find it? Or, if not, is there any way we might know when to check back about that sort of thing?

Any information is good, we're on a tight budget around Christmas time so every bit of advanced warning helps, and I'm sure I'm not the only one!

It's such a godssend to have all of the team so passionate about this, and I'm super thankful to everyone who's contributed to making this THE best VTT experience I've had. My partner's had some contributions to a couple of releases so I've gotten to see a fraction of how much programming can go into the automation and quality of life tweaks. Honestly everything is so fluid once it's done that is honestly too easy to forget the amount of work you guys do for US to be able to play as we do, so genuinely thanks to all the folks involved!

Silver Crusade

Oh that makes perfect sense, yeah, and it's a great starting point! I've got a campaign that's going to spend a bit of time in Arcadia so it's a good bit to know, thanks for the answer and insight!

Silver Crusade

Appreciate all the responses you've given out so far, Luis! You've been doing great stuff here and in the published works

One burning question I've had, and can't find anything about (which of anyone else reading can point me to a blurb or something, that'd be wonderful too), is there any info out there about elves in Arcadia? And if not, any thoughts on that front? I'm sure a full answer would be in an Arcadia based book, but it's worth asking, especially if I missed something!

I haven't read through everything yet but insofar as I can tell Con's used for DC, and thus counteract checks, and in at least one instance determining targets within an aura. Still reading though! Seems a bit like Thaumaturge in that regard; it's a "martial" that gets benefit off of a stat that isn't used directly in attack/damage, but it does at least boost HP and Fort saves.

ALL that being said, a feat for a burn effect could be interesting, but not having it baseline feels alright with how they've built the class. Opinion may vary, still going over things, this is just knee jerk reaction.

We're playing Malevolence soon, and with two groups! I'll be playing one of each, and with free archetype;

In game 1, Namarien, a Svetocher Dhampir (Elf, he/him) Thaumaturge with the Weapon Improviser free archetype, his first implement is a wand, and I'm intending to play around with scrolls, talismans, and whatever random weapon I can grab.

In game 2, Savrias Covarian, Tiefling (human/hellspawn, they/them) Psychic w/Loremaster free archetype and Precision for the telekinetic shenaniganry.

I'm HOPING that it's a measure to make sure that subscription and pre-orders aren't delayed too far beyond the release date, so pushing the release date back would help subs to get theirs and give more breathing room, what with the delays in shipping. I'm hoping, but my impatience is real lol

What? no i haven't been refreshing the community service forum frontpage every 30 minutes since thursday looking for it. why would anyone even suggest that?
Your only doing every 30 mins? Poser. :)

I’ve had the Customer Service and Secrets of Magic pages up on my phone’s browser. Every time I get a text, I also check the forums. I have a problem.

That problem is my party really needs me to change from Wizard to Magus for us to win the Ruby Phoenix Tournament.

That is a pretty serious problem, how you gonna let your fighting team down like that?
I feel your pain. A couple of the players in the game I'm currently GMing are trying to find ways for me to kill them so they can play Magus and Summoner.

I feel all of this so deeply. My group picked back up an old game from PF1 within the last couple of months. One of them was a magus and has been chomping at the bit to BE a magus again instead of a Swashbuckler w/Sorcerer multi. And so I keep doin' the refresh dance for their sake! (And mine who am I kidding, Magus was one of my favorite classes when I got to play)

Silver Crusade

Having slept on it, read through the other opinions, and talked with some of my players and peers... I'm still really internally divided.

I feel more and less terrible about the number of slots they get, and looking at the numbers from other casters has made it more conflicted.

A full caster has focus spells and between 28 and 37 spell slots, and 5 cantrips. At best they're expert in armor and weapons, and at worst they're master with casting (poor Warpriest).

A mult-class non-caster who dedicates fully has 14 spell slots plus 2 or 3 cantrips, and possibly some focus spells. Said multi'd character is at worst going to be expert with armor and master with weapons, and master with spells, in general (though possibly a legend in either weapons or armor).

A magus or summoner who takes the "Extra Spells" feat has focus spells, 6 slots, and 5 cantrips. Magus is Master/Master/Master, as is Summoner (effectively, via the Eidolon).

If summoner/magus dedicated fully to a casting archetype they'd have half spells that a full caster normally does, at 18 total slots, and redundant proficiency because they're both already master casters.

If the new classes had a third of the options of the lower slotted normal casters they'd still be looking at 9 spell slots per day. 3/3/3 could accomplish that, so could 2/2/2/2/1. I don't think 1 each would feel good, either, though, especially for Magus with how "spellstrike" works right now. Multi-classing would, at this point, bump them up to 23 spell slots, which is just behind a lower-slotted full caster, and possibly too much?

At that point, though, with having 9 spells I think the casting enhancer feats and multi-classing would feel less mandatory for either class, though. They could still absolutely burn through their slots, especially a Magus, but it'd leave some room for utility or other considerations.

Would that be too many slots, still? Obviously playtesting is still needed, but that at least feels a little better to me, on paper. Food for thought, at least?

Spellcaster MC dedication on Magus sounds good at first glance.

It is, though you can get some of the same effect via Martial Caster. Maybe too good.

I'm really not convinced Magus has enough basic spell slots to really do the thing they seem to be aiming for. Multiclassing really helps with that, but should probably not be as good or necessary as it looks like it might be.

Worries me and my group are having as well; Multi-classing seems TOO good of an option, and Martial Caster might be near mandatory to accomplish the theme of the class. Cantrips and other spell sources will surely help, but not with feats requiring 'non-cantrip spells' to accomplish their effect. I'm still willing to playtest it out and see for sure but my knee-jerk reaction is to question the extreme slot limitation (while loving everything else about the class so far).

Kalaam wrote:

It's interresting that, in concept when you take all the Spellstrike feats, the idea is that you cast only very few spells, but when you do...everyone better take cover.

However until you get those feats, 4 spells per day feels very, very limited, having to choose 4 spells within all of the Arcana list will be challenging to say the least xD Gotta try that. I would have expected a Spell Recall focus spell to alleviate that, something akin to "By spending 1 Focus point, recharge one spell slot you have expanded during this encounter." with a frequency limit of 10 minutes or "once between each refocus" or something.

I've had a player comment with concerns about highly limited casting, as well; on the one hand I totally get the need for limiting them (master weapon prof, decent armor, and decent casting prof), but on the other that does seem a bit strict for the slot limitations. The martial caster feat seems all but required for them to get the most bang for their buck with most of their toys, and even then is 6 slots enough?

That's what playtesting is for, for sure; it may feel fine between focus spells, multiclassing, innate spells, and cantrips, and I really hope so because I like every other aspect of the class so far!

Silver Crusade

On Skill Expertise;

I really like this as a feat. Barring skilled human, a few classes and archetypes, only being able to reliably raise two skills to expert before the master increases start showing up feels bad, and having more ways to expand your skillset while still working within the boundaries of the game could make a fun difference.

Expert "might not be much", but any opportunity to increase proficiency without spending those precious level increases just... again, FEELS good. It's a feel good feat!

Silver Crusade

While I was out shopping for groceries I got the email for my copy! Home and downloading now, at long last...

Silver Crusade

Well, consider what permanent is from the perspective of beings that can survive for millenia. If a mortal dies, is judged, and then goes on to ...say, Heaven, and does eventually become quintessence, does the fact that it took 120,000 years make it weaker or less amazing?

It's different for everyone, and everything, with a soul, I'm sure. We get an example of one NPC in a certain AP who was alive over 10,000 years ago, and we see them as an outsider in our current time in-game. They went beyond petitioner and are still in existence, and that's wild.

What time means to an outsider, petitioner, or god is entirely different than what it means to us, I think; the life cycle, in their planar view, is always in motion, sure, and nothing lasts forever, but in comparison to the brief time that PCs/NPCs have on the plane, it can sure feel like forever!

As to immortality, though, there's always shortcuts, and certain NPCs have made good use of them (Old Mage Jatembe, Haojin, Baba Yaga, and more). Mythic PCs from PF1 could achieve a kind of immortality, too, but I imagine those are extremely rare and for good reason!

When reading an encounter in the book they're listed as, for an example, Moderate 1. What I was curious about was if that is intended to be a moderate encounter for a level 1 group, would a level 2 group then treat the same encounter as one level less severe in difficulty?

For context, my undersized party is moving around the Citadel in a rather odd way and they've hit level 2, but are about to encounter the bugbear, spider swarms, and Alak with the Imps.

So for the bugbear encounter - it's listed as Low 1, would I want to award xp as if it were Trivial instead of Low, since the party is level 2? Or should I adjust the encounter to make it Low difficulty for a level 2 party?
