Pronunciation question: is Xopatl pronounced with a "sh" for the X like it would be in Nahuatl (making it "Sho-patl," basically)?

Where in Golarion would you hypothetically place Malivars, your homebrew rabbitfolk?

I considered going with a full-on Nahuatl pronunciation, but decided to veer away from it just a tad. Tyrant's Grasp 5 has a pronunciation guide for Xopatl, which notes it as "so-PAH-tul" instead of the more obvious Nahuatl one. The letter X in modern Mexican Spanish is a bit different from the Nahuatl X and I was more familiar with those sounds. For example, the X in Mexico or Oaxaca sounds like the English H from words like happy or howdy. There are also other times where it sounds like an S, particularly in the name Xochitl (hear Xochitl Gomez's name in this video). So, I grabbed the S sound that the X makes in Xochitl and used that for the X in Xopatl.

This gives me a thought: Perhaps there's an ancient Razatlani language which has more Nahuatl sounds and modern Razatlani uses more contemporary sounds like those in Mexican Spanish? It would be a fun little thing to consider.

The primary populations would be in forested areas like the Verduran Forest, the Fangwood in Nirmathas, and the Fierani Forest in Kyonin. There are probably also pockets of rabbitfolk in other climes like the River Kingdoms, the deserts of the Golden Road, and the frosts of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings or Irrisen.

Any thoughts on wyrwoods? I really loved seeing them in Xopatl, but not much has been said about their place within Arcadia's cultures.

I'm a big fan of construct ancestries, and they're one I'm eager to see more of.

Wyrwoods rule. I am also a fan of constructs ancestries and robots in general. My love for robots was cemented by the one-two punch of watching FLCL and absolutely loving Canti, followed up by playing a warforged fighter in a 4E campaign for several years. It's part of the reason why I jumped at the opportunity to write automatons for Construct Handbook and wanted to give wyrwoods more love in Heroes of Golarion.

The few thoughts I've had are as follows:

If and when we were to get to Arcadia, wyrwoods would definitely be a part of it. If I had my druthers, they would be a playable ancestry that's uncommon or even common in Arcadia.

Wyrwood culture would be interesting because they would be so far removed from Azlant that there's a decent chance that the servitude aspect of their history would be a distant memory. Would it shape wyrwood culture? Most likely, but it would have a very small footprint for modern wyrwoods. Wyrwoods would have probably spread out from the eastern coast of Arcadia and moved inland by a serious amount, though they might not be widespread throughout the entire continent. Any trepidations local Arcadians would have had with wyrwoods' connections to Azlant would be long gone and they'd likely be just any other person to a native Arcadian. Wyrwoods would be part of the background alongside humans, dwarves, orcs, halflings, and so on.

Mechanically, I haven't thought about them too much. They would have a unique niche compared to the likes of androids, automatons, and poppets. Perhaps they would have even greater magical abilities powered by their aeon hearts? Not sure, but I think I would prefer for wyrwoods to feel mechanically distinct from those other three ancestries in some way. Heritages could be tied to the type of material used to create the wyrwood. There was a bit of this in 1E with the different materials you could swap out for different racial abilities.

Mind, all of this is just kind of off the cuff thinking. None of this is set in stone anywhere and please don't read into this too much. If and when wyrwoods make their 2E return (and I want it to be sooner than later!), I would not be the only one having to make calls on this.

Oh, one last thing. The wyrwoods featured in Tyrant's Grasp 5 are not representations of proper wyrwoods in the area. They lacked the spark that granted them proper sapience. Whether that's a soul or something else, I'm unsure, but those wyrwoods were just "mindless" constructs. "True" Xopatli wyrwoods might be a bit different from the ones you encountered as enemies in the adventure.

I do a yearly FLCL rewatch, and my first ever published product was an Eberron fan supplement! You've got killer taste.

The thought of a construct ancestry being a known quantity in culture is something I really love, and I think helps with the identity angle some - all the other current options are obscure rarities to the folks around them, so people just going "Oh yeah, there's a family of them at my church each week!" is super cool. Local interpretations of Brigh or some other god of artifice would be fun to see, too. The construction material idea ties nicely into my nostalgia for warforged having that option with feats back in 3.5.

Even if those Xopatli wyrwoods weren't "alive," their visual designs were absolutely gorgeous. The artist deserves all the kudos for them - those illustrations are why I want to play one!

Is there any chance you have a one-sentence description for either Nalmeras or Innazpa? I know we have basically nothing officially published for either.

I'm going to hold off on teasing those for the moment. I have my thoughts on what those nations will probably be, but I'd rather commit by putting it in print rather than speculating on the forums. Innazpa is known as the Land of Living Stories, so you can use that to imagine what could be going on there.

There are definitely additional Arcadian teases coming in the future, so keep an eye out!

Luis, since PaizoCon is over, can you help clear up whether or not the Ratajin are in the Lost Omens: Impossible Lands? We know they aren't one of the new ancestries, but are they in there still as a part of the book's bestiary? As a non-ancestry option? Or were they deemed needed to be in another book?

Paizo Employee Developer

10 people marked this as a favorite.

They are included in the book's bestiary. We only have so many "slots" for ancestries when a book includes them and unfortunately they didn't make the cut. Part of that is due to the fact that there's so little information on them. Mwangi Expanse taught us that working with a single sentence and expanding on it to create a full ancestry, like we did with conrasus and golomas and shisks, is pretty difficult! Rather than do that again with Impossible Lands, it was better for us to focus on one of the "one line" name drops and give them more love as we design and develop the new ancestry. We actually worked internally quite a bit to develop concepts ahead of time, create concept art, and more for kahrishis so we would have an easier time during the writing and development phases of the book. Since we could only focus on one, ratajin was moved into the bestiary.

If and when we get a chance to look at Vudra, return to the Impossible Lands, or have another ancestry-focused book, there's a good chance to see them become playable. With the monster entry in IL, they've now entered the "ancestry ready" status like stheno. The entry gives us details on the ancestry's physical features, some background info, at least one piece of art, and a stat block that we can use to build a mechanical foundation for the ancestry. All that we need now is the right book for them. If enough people bang the drum for ratajin, I'm sure we can convince other people on the team to make that happen sooner than later.

Is there anywhere in Arcadia where psychic magic is known? Vudra is the main hub for it, but we’ve seen a few other places and peoples familiar with psychic abilities elsewhere.

I would guess that there is. I have some ideas on where that might be, but until more concrete information on Arcadia is decided, I don't want to commit to anything that might end up being incorrect later.

At the very least, I assume that all classes are found throughout Arcadia, which includes psychics, so they wouldn't be seen as a rarity or anything like that.

What is FLCL?

It's an anime from the early 2000s. I first watched it when it was broadcast on Adult Swim and it happened to be during a very formative time for me. (Watching something when I was fourteen really stuck with me! Who would have guessed?)

The show is primarily a coming of age story told through the lens of a gonzo, high-energy plot featuring robots, space aliens, and other really weird stuff. It features a soundtrack by the pillows, a Japanese rock band and a very high quality animation style(s) that was pretty top notch for its time. Overall, it's something that is really hard to make heads or tails of for the majority of its length, but is still super compelling. Luckily, the show is only six episodes long, so it lends itself to future rewatches to better understand the show's events and catch other fun tidbits throughout. I really love this show and I recommend it to everyone, but also know that it can be hard to penetrate as a piece of media.

There were eventually additional seasons made, but these were nearly two decades later and I've never checked them out myself.

Hey Luis! I'm so psyched right now for Battlezoo Eldamon right now! How would you incorporate Eldamon into the Lost Omens campaign setting? I was thinking about running a Tian Xia adventure when Eldamon releases and going all in with that book.

Paizo Employee Developer

It's hard to say without having the final product in hand and knowing the exact nature of Eldamon and knowing the suggestions for incorporating it into the setting. That said, the vibe I get from Eldamon is more fey than anything else. I think a fun story would be one where the boundaries between the First World and Material Plane get ever so thinner and allows for more fey to appear in Golarion and the like. Eldamon could start "crossing over" and become a new thing that people discover. A story about the initial discovery of Eldamon and paradigm shift on Golarion would be interesting.

What would 'The Sound of One Hand Clapping 'be like statted as a monk maneuver?

Ever play the game Fallen London?

Paizo Employee Developer

3 people marked this as a favorite.

"The sound of one hand clapping" is a koan, a paradoxical anecdote or riddle intended on getting you to think about logic (or illogical matters in this case) and hopefully push you toward enlightenment. Basically, it's a thought exercise that hopefully helps further your understanding of yourself and existence. This all sounds very meditative to me and suggests something you would use to empty your mind. Thus!

Clarity of Mind[reaction] Feat 14
Monk
Trigger Your turn ends.
Requirements You are currently affected by a mental effect that you gained by failing, but not critically failing, a saving throw.
You focus on one of the many koans you know and use its paradoxical nature to help place your mind in a meditative state to temporarily overcome a mental effect. Until the end of your next turn, you ignore a single mental effect that meets the requirement. You can suppress a particular effect using Clarity of Mind only once.
Special You can use this reaction even if the mental effect is preventing you from using reactions.

Mind, this is just something I threw together and is not official in any capacity, but I think it would work well for monks. It's just a reskinned (reclassed?) version of the rogue's Cognitive Loophole feat, so at least we know it should be balanced!

As for Fallen London, I've never played it. In fact, this was the first I've heard of it. I see that it was created by the same team that made Sunless Sea, which I've always heard good things about, so it might be fun to check out!

Thanks! Although I thought the original one was to smack a person across the face. "Snap out of it man!"

Hi Luis!

Do you mind offering a few suggestions for deities that might be interested in the peoples there, both with the best of intentions and those with the worst?

If that's too vague, then I'll rephrase slightly by asking which deities might want to see the Arcadians flourish and which might wish to seem them fall or be subjugated?

Thanks in advance.

I know you say never mind later, but I still feel like answering this question. From what has already been put into print, Abadar, Ah Pook, Cihua Couatl, Kazutal, Pharasma, and Sarenrae all have some kind of presence in Arcadia. I'd imagine that Arazni also has her eye to her homeland. There have also been name drops of Pahti Couatl and Tolte Couatl as deities, though those are just a single sentence in Bestiary 3, so there's not much to work from at the moment.

Of those, Abadar, Cihau Couatl, Kazutal, and Sarenrae are wanting prosperity for the people of Arcadia. Ah Pook is absolutely trying to establish fear and uncertainty among the populace.

Of the other core deities, I could see Asmodeus, Desna, Erastil, Gozreh, and Nethys being ones with more pronounced faiths on the continent. There's nothing to say that the other deities couldn't have a foothold there either, but it would likely be minimal.

keftiu wrote:

That product was made before Infinite was a thing, so DTRPG was the main place to put it, especially as it was in collaboration with Rogue Genius Games. I've since learned that publishing something in the Infinite environment "locks" it in forever. That is, if I wanted to do a Kickstarter where I expand on my 3PP offerings, for example, I could only do so with material that didn't exist in Infinite. I can do that with rabbitfolk and my latest ancestry release, but not with dragonkin. (Though, as the dragonkin is an OGL product, there is a possibility that I could reuse the mechanics with a significant flavor rewrite outside of Infinite. Gonna have to check with a lawyer for that.)

I have thoughts on how rabbitfolk would fit in Golarion if I decide to bring them over to Infinite, but I'm holding off on that for the moment.

I didn't! I haven't had access to cable TV in over a decade at this point, so I haven't been able to keep up with Adult Swim, Toonami, and some of the other TV I enjoyed growing up. At least not in the same way as before, since I can still stream stuff. I know the folks over at Adult Swim and Toonami love FLCL, so I'm not surprised it keeps popping up there.

Nope! I have very little experience with Fire Emblem personally. I've played about an hour of the first GBA title and that's about it. Also, I know the characters featured in the Smash Bros. series, but beyond that, I have no real knowledge about FE. I'm glad that my dragonkin were able to help you secure your character concept, though. Did you get to decide which teams are the finalists in Fists of the Ruby Phoenix? The five that get unique endings have caught my eye tonight, for... reasons.

Paizo Employee Rule and Lore Creative Director

If you're referring to the seven teams (plus one PC team) that compete in the tournament proper, I did! Since I had to write the Ruby Phoenix Fighting Roster article, I got to decide the makeup, theme, and stories for these teams. I worked with the other AP authors to figure out some broad strokes ideas (teams from all over Golarion, one could be more magic focused, etc.), but everything else was my own. The only requirement was that one of the teams was Tino's Toughest and serve as an underdog/friendly rival team. I didn't have much say in what happens to the teams in the rest of the AP, though. Those decisions were made by the authors and our developer.

Any plans to make an official mana or spell point system rule set? love the idea for some different flavor but understand the need to balance wizard and sorc, etc. Really like they idea of mana and spell casters knocking themselves out from pushing themselves.

Hi,

I love the Investigator class as Int-based martial, but honestly list of features seems a bit underwhelming, at least for some types of campaigns - dungeon crawling for example. Also having Devise a Stratagem as a free action really depends on GM style, at least from my experience.

From what I've seen the best way to play investigator is to dip into some caster class to utilize high int and the fact that spell attacks are not covered by Devise a Stratagem. Which is a bit sad - I would really like to be able to play competitive Investigator without need to cast spells.

So I guess my question is - is there any chance that there're some review / fixes might be coming for Investigator?

Probably not. Such a system would require a lot of playtesting and it would take resources away from other things like classes. I also think it's a fun system, but I don't feel that's the kind of spellcasting system that would be commonplace enough in Golarion to warrant making a ruleset for it. Maybe someone on Pathfinder Infinite could do it!

I feel that the investigator is pretty aligned with our current expectations, so I don't foresee any kind of major changes in the future. Of course, if enough people are telling us that the investigator isn't working for them, we could definitely revisit that.

Is there any particular order of which maps to rely on more if they conflict? For example, in the World Guide alone, the big Inner Sea map has a lot of different borders than the regional maps. Is it generally smaller scale and more recent > larger scale and older? Something else?

Super fair that this is a more nitpicky question that is for a very specific subset of wiki and map users like me, lol.

Can we expect an expanded edition of Gods and Magic? I understand if you guys needed more time to revamp the goblin gods, but there were others left out that I felt were glaring holes (the three main Vudran gods Vudravati, Obari and Embaral, main Protean Lord Ssila'meshnik, Main Psychopomp Usher Ceyanan, some rakasha imortals, asura rana and velstrac demagogues).

One more thing. Do you know when the city of Kibwe was founded? I know it's an ancient city, but it was difficult figuring out how long the area has been around for.

I think the Inner Sea Poster Map is still the gold standard in terms of detail. I know that in the rush toward to PF2E's launch, we got a little more lax with things like borders. Basically, the higher detail maps like the poster map or the zoomed-in maps of specific nations like the map of Cheliax in the campaign setting book are the ones to go with.

It wouldn't necessarily be something like a Gods & Magic 2, but we're definitely looking for ways to get more gods brought over. I think the chance of another book in the vein of G&M is possible, especially since there are lots of groupings of gods, like the ones you mentioned, that we still want to port over. It's just of matter of when and what would be the best product for that.

Unrevealed at this time. The original gazetteer suggests it was over a thousand years old, but Mwangi Expanse also name drops Kibwe during events set as early as 1054 AR, so there might be a conflict here. It could be that Kibwe existed for thousands of years as a small checkpoint or trading post, but eventually grew into a proper settlement around 3600-3700 AR.

I'm really looking forward to Treasure Vault release coming February, especially the "Alchemy Unleashed" part.

I've read that there will be some new poisons there, is the goal is to expand the assortment of poisons or could we expect more powerful ones (based on level)? As far as I know, poisons are not really useful right now because of their low DC and only targeting Fort.

Are there any alchemical ammunition in the book? I really like the idea of non-magic ammunition, but at the moment there are very few alchemical ammunition exist.

Finally, could we probably expect any preview before the release?

Yeah, there are a lot of new poisons. This includes lots of variety in both concept and level. I don't believe the expectation of DCs has changed with these new poisons, but I wouldn't know as well as someone like Michael Sayre, who was the design lead for the book.

Yes, there is a fair amount of alchemical ammunition in the book.

There will be definitely previews soon! Stay tuned!

Hi Luis, can you offer some clarity on the map of the Lake of Mists and Veils in Gatewalkers 2? Most of the shoreline is very different from previous maps, lots of locations are spelled differently ("Egade" vs "Egede", or more awkwardly, "Skyloatch" vs "Skywatch", as examples), Orlov has dramatically moved, etc.

Can you provide guidance on how we can use this map? Is this considered the new coastline, settlement spellings, etc?

I wasn't in my Creative Director position (or fully spun up in the position, can't remember exactly) when Gatewalkers was completed, so I can't speak to the nature of these changes. They could be errors or might be aligning with future plans for the setting. I'll definitely look into them, but don't expect any kind of update on them soon. For the moment, assume they're correct, as this is the latest version of the map.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I would say no. I think leshies statted up as "monsters" (i.e. leshy stat blocks from the Bestiaries) can represent leshies that aren't fully capable of or interested in living a fully independent life. That is, there could be a leshy with a "young" spirit or one that isn't in a position to take on the life of an adventurer or NPC.

One burning question I've had, and can't find anything about (which of anyone else reading can point me to a blurb or something, that'd be wonderful too), is there any info out there about elves in Arcadia? And if not, any thoughts on that front? I'm sure a full answer would be in an Arcadia based book, but it's worth asking, especially if I missed something!

Paizo Employee Rule and Lore Creative Director

3 people marked this as a favorite.

There isn't at the moment. I've been working under the assumption that all of the core ancestries (dwarf, elf, gnome, gobling, halfling, human) are found on every continent, since you have to use the CRB to play characters in any part of the setting. How widespread these ancestries are varies, however. In Arcadia, I feel that elves would be far less prominent and be an uncommon ancestry, maybe even bordering on rare. They're around, but they're not found in every region. The reasons for that aren't ones we've explored, but I feel that it might be something like a lack of an auidara network on the continent. It's harder to spread out across the continent when returning from Castrovel without a way back to Arcadia.

All of that is to say, there isn't any info on Arcadian elves at the moment, but knowing that they're rarer than humans, dwarves, halflings, and orcs might be a helpful starting point!
