Pathfinder Battles: Hail the Living God!

Tuesday, February 19, 2019

This week's preview of Pathfinder Battles: Ruins of Lastwall examines the faith of one of Golarion's newest deities. Fewer than 50 years ago, the masked man known as Razmir appeared in the River Kingdom of Melcat, and declared himself a god after having passed the Test of the Starstone. Since that fateful day, he has raised a nation in Melcat's place that bears his name—Razmiran—and stretches all the way to the shores of Lake Encarthan. All who live there are required to worship him and pay harsh tithes to his church. Because PCs are likely lining up to join his growing cult, we thought we'd give them some minis to use!

First on the list is the Razmir Cultist, a Medium common figure representing the rank and file members of Razmir's church. These are the laity of the faith and can often be found serving an influential priest or operating as enforcers of the church's will among the common folk of Razmiran. For such service, the depicted cultist has been elevated to the church rank of Herald of the Eighth Step, as indicated by their black robe and iron mask.

The aforementioned Razmir Priest is the second in the series, in elegant purple robes. They wield no weapons but can cast spells like any other priest, and thus present as much a threat as an entire team of acolytes. Rarer than the common acolyte, the Razmir Priest is a Medium uncommon figure.

Since the Ruins of Lastwall set already features so many deities, it seemed wrong not to put the setting's newest god in a rare slot. Thus, I present to you one of the most impressive figures we've ever done, in my opinion: Razmir, Living God. The intricate gold detail on his cloak is awe-inspiring, and his commanding pose demands reverence. While he'd probably have you executed for the heresy, Razmir also makes for a more generic evil spellcaster in a homebrew campaign.

Though it's not the most flattering comparison, I can't help but think of Scar and his hyena lackeys in Disney's The Lion King whenever the topic of Razmir comes up around the office. So despite being far from the deserts of Qadira or Osirion, it seems fitting to show off this set's Hyena, a Medium common figure. There's not much to say about hyenas beyond that I find their "laughs" to be among the creepiest sounds made by any animal in the real world. Now I'm going to have that sounds stuck in my head just from thinking about it. The sacrifices I make for you all!

That's it for this week. Next time we'll look at the final six figures in the set and the last piece of set dressing, including one of the most requested minis since Pathfinder Battles started, and the final deity of the set. Until then, "row like you believe."

Most Requested? Well, now I can hardly wait for next week to see what it is! I know what my most requested is, but I don’t know what everyone else is asking for!

I can only assume that PFS is getting some love with Dear Old Uncle Drandle.

Very cool stuff. Though, I do not recall there being a rank of Razmiri priest that has a purple robe.

Those are some good looking minis!

The humans look really good. With one slight problem. The hands on that priest are much too big; I mean, look, wrist to fingertip is more than chin to crown.

Sweet! The Battles line continues its ability to put out bands of humanoids on a theme, making a case a really nice way to get what I need for a larger encounter. Having different poses on different miniatures goes a long way for me. I know it takes up a few more spots that could be served on other monsters or characters, but having four or five Razmir Cultists (or whatever I call them in my home-brew campaign) show up with two Razmir Priests is preferable to my using six or seven miniatures that look nothing alike. The latter works if I'm doing a gang of thieves or something w/o any real visual mark, but Paizo is the best at giving me what I need to flesh out my bands/guilds/armies with relevant miniatures.

As for these NPCs in particular, I'm both excited and a bit apprehensive about them. I love the robes, the colors, the poses, and the masks themselves. And I'm glad they are in those masks, and thus allow us to avoid the normal concern we've come to expect with caucasian flesh-tone on WizKids miniatures. But in these renderings, those masks on the Razmir Cultists are metallic and look AMAZING! If you get the production pieces in and the masks remain metallic as they appear here, they should be a huge hit. But if they are more drab and don't really have much shine, they'll be somewhat disappointing. I feel like these are a bit like the Dweomer Cat in that regard. I loved the rendering and was super excited for such a miniature, but in hand it was dull and even goofy. That piece is actually on my list of most disappointing pieces regarding Rendering-to-Production miniatures. Here's hoping the Razmir Cultists don't find a home there, too!

I never need an excuse for an animal in the set. You could drop desert animals into a Winter-heavy set and I'd scoop them all up. This hyena looks awesome, and I'm very happy it got the Common rarity. I feel pretty confident in the body of the miniature; Paizo usually does a pretty decent job with similar-styled hair or fur. And the spots shouldn't be too hard to get right. That face looks amazing, and in my opinion will be what makes or breaks it in-hand.

Thanks for providing us with so many of these previews so early. It allows me to decide ahead of time whether I will be buying any extras in addition to those I get in my case.

Here is my guess for the "one of the most requested minis since PFB started":

Let's see the facts:
: 3 common slots are open, one uncommon (but not a large one) and two rares (but not a large one).
We can rule out it being the dressing piece, as these didn't exist at the start of the line.
It has to be a small or medium mini.
PFB started in january 2012, so it has to be a fairly early creature.

I am going with medium mini.
And my guess is:
ARODEN, GOD OF HUMANITY!

Will a Ruins of Lastwall case still be the regular price as the previous cases in the line?

Under the My Subscriptions page, where it shows the upcoming subscriptions for the next few months, it's showing a total for my case at $358.18, which is 30% off the original $511.68 price, not the Paizo listed price of $399.99. Typically, it reads $511.69 $399.99 $279.99, with the first two prices being struck through. The product page for this set seems to indicate it's the Paizo listed price of $399.99, so in all likelihood it's just a weird hiccup. I know the Subscriptions page isn't final, and the information is subject to change (especially this far out in advance). But I thought I'd point it out anyways as I'm not sure I've ever seen it do that before.

Is the most requested mini a god? As it reads, I can't tell if, "and the final deity of the set" applies to the most requested mini in the set, or it simply applies to one of the final six miniature we'll see. Because if it's just general, my official guess is a Shocker Lizard (Small-sized) from the first Bestiary.

This is a weird copy-paste issue that I don't know how to fix. I'll let the web team know, as I can only seem to correct it half the places.

I wonder if this Pathfinder Battles set is a hint that the next AP after Tyrant's Grasp(*) will be set in and/or next to Razmiran.

(*)Since Tyrant's Grasp is supposed to be the last AP in 1st Edition, this would be first AP using 2nd Edition unless that is seriously delayed.

NEWS UPDATE:

In what seems to be a very strange move, Wizkids have just announced the release date for the yet unnamed "D&D: Icons of the Realms" set 12 (rumored to be nautical in theme) for AUGUST 2019 - the same month the "Pathfinder Battles: Legendary Adventures preview pack" releases and just a month before the full "Legendary Adventures" set releases!

This puts the two lines in direct competition in my opinion and also allows Wizkids to present the D&D set 12 at Gencon 2019 (august 1st-4th)!
Hopefully they'll do the same with PFB set 17.

Up until now i bought both lines, but i will favor the "Pathfinder Battles: Legendary Adventures" set, because
1) It features huge minis,
2) I play Pathfinder, not D&D 5e,
3) I want to support Paizo &
4) I find this a questionable move by Wizkids.

I seriously hope that "Legendary Adventures" won't get delayed to october as a result.
It certainly isn't beyond Wizkids, they just did it with "Ruins of Lastwall", which was originally acheduled for april, but got pushed back to may, presumely to move it away a little more from the march 6th release of "Dungeon of the Mad Mage".
This makes sense from a financial point of view, as Wizkids wants to sell both product lines, but puts in question the back to back release strategy in august/september.

D&D set 12 will feature 44 small, medium and large (no huge) minis & 1 gargantuan creature as case incentive, it seems.

I know, you mean "Malfeshnekor", but we havn't had a normal medium Barghest from PFB.

I have the medium one from D&D's very first set "Harbinger", but that one is 16 years old. ;-)

What i totally forgot:

The mini in question is most propably "TAR-BAPHON, THE WHISPERING TYRANT"!

He was on the cover of both the "Gazetteer" & "Inner Sea Guide" and only exists as Reaper metal mini so far.
Him and "ARAZNI" would make most sense for the last two rare spots.

Tar-Baphon is also in Reaper bones. And I agree he is likely to be included.

So what does everyone think was being referred to as one of the most requested miniatures? I've got no problems with it being a god, but I'm not sure I've seen one god requested over other gods more often than not.

I know there are some Large-sized miniatures I've seen commonly requested like a Rhinoceros/Wooly Rhinoceros, Constrictor Snake, Giant Mantis, and another Dire animal.

Medium are the Drow and the Shocker Lizard as the most requested I've seen. I agree it would be great to have a Drow given they are different color than D&D. Wizards' has already made PLENTY over the last 20 years, with many still affordable and easily attainable. But they seem more blue in PF, so it would be great to have at least one.

Is there an official street date available for Ruins of Lastwall? I saw Marco mention elsewhere that it was apparently pushed back to May from April, but the specifics might matter in my case. Our local "draft" group consists of a few university students who will be moving away mid-May, and I want to find out as much in advance as possible if we can draft before they leave us.

Thanks in advance, and let me also add in that this set looks absolutely amazing - great job, everyone involved!!!

Sadly there isn't one and probably won't be until april.

Here is the Wizkids official release list

At the moment they update it every wednesday.
I have been watching it for over a year now, they normally announce a street date three to four weeks in advance.

Paizo likely doesn't know the date themselves, as that is totally Wizkids decision.
But they will let them know once they know.
Lately Wizkids has provided Paizo early enough with the minis so that they can be shipped with their normal subscription items.

May 2019 shipping will likely begin on may 16th and end on 29th, but i expect Paizo to have minis by Paizocon (24th-27th of may).
