News about Gen Con 2014 and Official Call for Gen Con 2014 Volunteers

Monday, March 3, 2014

For Gen Con 2013, I advised last year that we planned to make it the biggest and best Gen Con yet. And it certainly was. We scheduled 1,400 tables of Pathfinder Society over the four days. We showed the world our GM 101 and GM 201 workshops, Kid's Beginner & Advanced Tracks, and Beginner Box Introductions, Parts 1 and 2. Gen Con was definitely a success and Paizo's biggest showing in history. But we can make it bigger and better!

Paizo will once again be a cosponsor at this year's show. What does that mean for Pathfinder Society? It means we return to the Sagamore Ballroom! We increase our playspace size, scheduling 150 to 170 tables per slot. Additionally, we also have two of the seven rooms that were used for Pathfinder Society last year. One of them will be used exclusively for Paizo seminars. The other room will have 10 tables and will be utilized for Pathfinder Adventure Card Game play.

We are planning to schedule 20 different scenarios, two Gen Con Specials, one Gen Con Exclusive, and two modules, We Be Goblins! and We Be Goblins Too! throughout the course of the convention.

The beginning of Season 6 Gen Con Special, The Paths We Choose, scheduled for Thursday night, will help us kick off Season 6 by showing off the achievements of many of the factions' Season 5 goals. As a tease, here is the short description as it will appear in the Gen Con catalog:

The failure of Mendev's wardstones set in motion not only a new crusade, but also catalyzed a change in the Society's various factions.

More information on the factions and surpirses upcoming will be offered in a series of blog posts later this year. This special is designed for levels 3—7.

The end of Season 5 Gen Con Special, Legacy of the Stonelords, scheduled for Friday night, will help us close Season 5 inside the Worldwound!

As a tease, here is the long description as it will appear in the Gen Con catalog:

At long last, the Pathfinders have reached the lost Sky Citadel Jormurdun only to find it already occupied by fiends and subterranean foes. The Society must mount an epic offense to explore the immense subterranean city while simultaneously driving off the squatters within. If they succeed, the Pathfinders may discover that the greatest prize is not the mountain fortress itself but the treasure that lies at its heart. The adventure concludes Season 5, Year of the Demon.

This Special is designed for levels 1—11.

The scenarios being scheduled for Gen Con are as follows:

Season 5

  • #5—06: You Have What You Hold
  • #5—08: The Confirmation
  • #5—09: The Traitor's Lodge
  • #5—10: Where Mammoths Dare Not Tread
  • #5—12: Destiny of the Sands, Part 1: A Bitter Bargain
  • #5—13: Weapon in the Rift
  • #5—15: Destiny of the Sands, Part 2: Race to Seeker's Folly
  • #5—16: Destiny of the Sands, Part 3: Sanctum of the Sages
  • #5—17: Fate of the Fiend
  • #5—18: The Stranger Within
  • #5—19: The Horn of Aroden
  • #5—20: The Sealed Gate
  • #5—21: The Merchant's Wake
  • #5—22: Scars of the Third Crusade
  • #5—23: Cairn of Shadows
  • #5—24: Assault on the Wound
  • #5—25: Vengeance at Sundered Crag

Season 6

  • #6—01: Trial by Machine
  • #6—02: The Silver Mount Collection
  • #6—03: The Technic Siege

We will be offering one exclusive on Saturday night. We will follow up Ruins of Bonekeep, Levels 1 and 2, with Bonekeep, Level 3: The Wakening Tomb also written by Jason. It is being designed for Tier 5—9 characters and again, will be particularly challenging and lethal. Ruins of Bonekeep, Level 3 will make its debut at Gen Con. We will only run level three one time at Gen Con so it will be a truly limited and exclusive event. On a side note, we will have a few tables running all three of the new Season 6 scenarios if you would rather not participate in this exclusive.

In regard to the Beginner Box Introductions, we have two different offerings again this year. During seven slots at Gen Con, we are setting aside six tables for these Beginner Box Introduction events. Both parts are scheduled with new players in mind. For Beginner Box Introductions, Part 1, it will allow for the first 45—60 minutes to be an exploration of the contents of the Pathfinder RPG Beginner Box, explaining the rules, and reviewing the pregenerated characters. The final 4 hours of each slot will be playing through the four, 1-hour adventures. For Beginner Box Introductions, Part 2, the GM will assist players in advancing their character to third level. The Beginner Box Transitions, Player Pack, and GM Kit will be reviewed. Once those three free documents have been briefly covered, we will be offering up five 1-hour adventures as time permits. Much like the four adventures in part one, these will be utilizing only the Beginner Box rules.

For the Pathfinder's Kids' Track, we will be setting aside six tables at seven slots during the convention. We are focusing on players aged 6—12 and we will be using the Pathfinder RPG Beginner Box for this as well. The Kids' Track is divided into two parts: the Beginner Track and the Advanced Track. Each kid's beginner track slot will be 2 hours long and each player will receive a check-off card. The first hour of each of the seven Kids' Beginner Track sessions teaches roleplay and rules, and reviews the pregenerated characters found in the Pathfinder RPG Beginner Box. During the second hour, one of the four, 1-hour adventures used during the Beginner Box Bash will be played.

For the Kids' Advanced Track, we are focusing on children who participated in last year's Kids' Beginner Track, at a local Kids' Beginner Track session near their home, or for older children that have prior experience with Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. The GM at each of the 2-hour slots will help the children level their chosen character to third level. After leveling is complete, the GM will run one of five new adventures designed using the Beginner Box rules.

We will be running each of the nine different adventures multiple times throughout the convention to allow flexible scheduling for children and parents. We will be restricting tables to four children players and are requiring a parent or guardian be present with their child (or multiple children if they have two or more interested in participating) for the entire 2 hours. The parent or guardian will assist the child when needed. But, we want to make this a good and memorable experience for the kids that attend Gen Con, who often find little they can participate in, especially with others their own age. We will be scheduling 24, 2-hour tables per day on Thursday through Saturday, and 12, 2-hour tables on Sunday, for the Kids' Track, divided between the Beginner and Advanced Tracks.

If a child plays all four different adventures in the Beginner's Track, he will be able to present his check-off card to HQ and receive a special certificate that celebrates his accomplishments. If a child plays all five different adventures in the advanced track, she will be able to present her check-off card to HQ and receive a second, different special certificate. Both certificates can be used on the child's Pathfinder Society character if they did to advance from the Beginner Box to the full Core Rulebook rules and participate in Pathfinder Society Organized Play. We may also have other give-aways or special prizes, such as dice and miniatures, similar to last year. I will be very picky when choosing volunteer GMs for the Kids' Track. I prefer to have school teachers and other professionals with experience dealing with children. I will consider GMs who are parents even if they do not deal with children regularly in their profession. If you are volunteering to GM the Kids' Track, please make sure to include all of your credentials. Also, since these are scheduled as 2-hour blocks, a GM will be required to run two Kids' Track slots back to back in a 4-hour block to count as one slot of credit toward GM rewards.

We will be running a new set of Pathfinder Quests inside the Sagamore and I do have a very few spots of 5-hour blocks for any GM interested in running those for players as they show up and fill the quests tables.

We are also bringing back the popular GM 101 and GM 201 seminars and need instructors to oversee the running of both. Both seminars will be offered on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Finally, I need volunteers who have experience with the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, to run demos in the Dealer Hall next to Paizo's booth, as well as run tables in a break out room next to Paizo's Seminar Room, from 8 a.m. until midnight Thursday through Saturday, and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sunday. You can volunteer to work one or two 5-hour blocks each day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Sunday ends at 4 pm) in the Dealer Hall. Volunteering for any demo time will count toward your GM reward credit below, but you still must have a minimum of seven, 5-hour sessions to qualify for a hotel room as a Tier 2 volunteer.

Now, let's talk about the GMs and volunteers we need to pull all of the above off and make it the biggest and best Gen Con ever.

I need a minimum of 350 volunteer GMs for Pathfinder Society games, Beginner Box Introductions, Kids' Track events, GM 101 and 201, and Pathfinder Adventure Card Game demos. I'll continue taking volunteer GMs until the slots are filled, at which point I will create a waiting list in the event that a scheduled GM has to cancel their Gen Con trip for whatever reason. I also need a few Volunteer Assistants for each slot of the show. These folks will not GM during their volunteer slots, but will instead help me run Pathfinder Society HQ, including marshalling, collecting tickets, distributing GM packs, entering tracking sheets into the database, and will be our go-to guys and gals for all things Pathfinder Society. Keep in mind these are very limited and likely to fill up in the first hour after the blog goes live.

Below you will find the reward structure for volunteering at Gen Con 2014. Keep in mind that you're volunteering for slots, not a specific event. Those that are able to spice up their event by adding 3-D terrain, props that stand out and the like, will be given first consideration for specific events. I will let you know the slots and scenarios you have been assigned as soon as possible. You may designate what tier scenarios you wish to GM but this is not guaranteed to be filled. I will do the best I can to accommodate your requests. My target date to have all GMs their assigned schedules is April 4. This should allow you plenty of time to plan a schedule, before the May 18 event registration, with your friends and family who are also attending Gen Con 2014. Please let me know via email which days you will be at the convention and how many slots you are volunteering for at Gen Con 2014.

When you email me, I need you to include the following information in your email:

  • 1) What email is tied to your Gen Con account.
  • 2) What email is tied to your Paizo.com account and what your message board user name is.
  • 3) I need to know if you have received the purple goblin Pathfinder Society volunteer shirts at a previous show. If not, I need to know what size you wear.

Volunteer Tiers and Rewards

Tier 1 GM Volunteers

Tier 1 GM volunteers are invaluable to making the show a success. Tier 1 GMs must select and volunteer for a MINIMUM of 8 slots. Tier 1 GMs may feel free to volunteer for more than 8 slots if they so desire. I only have room for 160 Tier 1 GM volunteers so don't delay in volunteering for this tier. Volunteers will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis, though I reserve the right to select volunteers who have previously worked for Paizo over new volunteers. Please do not volunteer for Tier 1 if you have any doubts that you won't be able to attend the show. Tier 1 GMs receive:

  • A FREE 4-day Gen Con 2014 badge
  • A FREE 1/4 of a hotel room in the Marriott or J.W. Marriott Hotels
  • A $10 per slot voucher for Paizo.com credit, useable at the show or anytime after, including with your subscriptions
  • A FREE Advanced Class Guide hardcover
  • Four FREE limited edition purple goblin Paizo Publishing Pathfinder Society Volunteer T-Shirts (if not previously received)
  • A special PFS boon that gives the option of choosing a one-time complete rebuild of any level character OR the choice to create a character from one of the following races: grippli, ratfolk, samsaran, suli, or vishkanya.

Tier 2 GM Volunteers

Tier 2 GMs must volunteer for a MINIMUM of 7 slots. I only have room for 120 Tier 2 GM volunteers so don't delay in volunteering for this tier — it fills up very quickly. Tier 2 GMs receive:

  • A FREE 4-day Gen Con 2014 badge
  • A FREE 1/4 of a hotel room in the Marriott or J.W. Marriott Hotels

  • A special Pathfinder Society boon that gives the choice to create a character from one of the following races: grippli, ratfolk, suli, or vishkanya.

Tier 3 GM Volunteers

While the rewards for volunteering for this tier are smaller, the majority of my volunteers will come from Tier 3. Tier 3 GMs must volunteer for a MINIMUM of 6 slots. Tier 3 GMs receive:

  • A FREE 4-day Gen Con 2014 badge
  • A $10 per slot voucher for Paizo.com credit, useable at the show or anytime after, including with your subscriptions

Tier 4 GM Volunteers

Tier 4 GMs must volunteer for a MINIMUM of 5 slots. Tier 4 GMs receive:

  • A special Pathfinder Society boon that gives the choice to create a character from one of the following races: suli or vishkanya.

Tier 5 GM Volunteers

This is the minimum volunteer level to receive shirts. Tier 5 GMs must volunteer for a MINIMUM of 4 slots. Tier 5 GMs receive:

  • A $10 per slot voucher for Paizo.com credit, useable at the show or anytime after, including with your subscriptions
  • Four FREE limited edition purple goblin Paizo Publishing Pathfinder Society Volunteer T-Shirts (if not previously received)

Volunteering for One, Two, or Three Slots

  • A $10 per slot voucher for Paizo.com credit, useable at the show or anytime after, including with your subscriptions
  • A special PFS boon that gives the choice to create a character from one of the following races: suli or vishkanya.

    When Volunteering...

Again, please be specific about what days and how many slots you are volunteering for. I will assign folks to slots and scenarios on an as-needed basis. I will update the needs in the thread below as I receive volunteers, so you may look there to remain up to date on where we still need help. You must have a gencon.com account and you must include your email tied to your Gen Con account in your email or I won't be able to get you a badge (obviously this is only for volunteers who are volunteering for 5 or more slots). Include your Paizo.com email account so I can make sure you receive the scenarios in your downloads. Finally, I need to know if you have received the purple goblin Pathfinder Society volunteer shirst in the past. If not, I need to know what size.

The time slots are as follows:

    Slot 1: Thursday 8 A.M. to 1 P.M.

    Slot 2: Thursday 1 P.M. to 6 P.M.

Slot 3: Thursday 7 P.M. to Midnight (Gen Con Exclusive #1 and three new Season 5 scenarios)

    Slot 4: Friday 8 A.M. to 1 P.M.

All Gen Con 2014 volunteers please email me at mike.brock@paizo.com with the subject line “Gen Con Volunteer - Tier X.”

Thanks in advance for volunteering and have a great spring and summer convention season!

For someone who has two Sczarni characters in the low end of levels, it seems strange to say this... but good. They don't fit the Society narrative well.

We use them to smuggle items across borders. They serve a vital need.

Mostly because supporting the Seeker tiers was more work than they expected.

I'm just as sad to see them go myself, mind you.

    What do you mean?

Are they dropping the higher (Seeker) levels?

For the multi-table specials, yes, it seems so.

Oh, for the specials. Yes, I’ve noticed that, which is a shame.

I thought you meant at first PFS was being capped at 12 again.

Development for encounters for a 12-13 subtier should take at least as much time as development for 7-8 and 10-11. Development for 14-15 will take as much time again, at least, based on the increased complexity of interactions to make GOOD story.

The other problem is that the appropriate framework of story to put those adventurers into are fundamentally different than the framework of story in which you put a subtier 1-2 table. They face different challenges with different mechanisms of resolution because of their vastly different capabilities.

Trying to fit both into the same event's wordcount can be very narrative-bending. Some of the better-received Living Greyhawk BIs were hundreds of pages to accommodate the need to have encounters that made sense across different APL bands - APLs 2 through 16, by even numbers, in their case. The writing and development time when doing this in a professional manner as Paizo is doing is just not feasible.

Hell, I was concerned we might not see ANY GenCon special this year due to time budgeting issues. Knowing that we traded 5-Ex being new content for 5-Conclusion and 6-00 both being things is great, and I can't wait to see what the factions have turned their attention to this year.

Easiest way is to go to the volunteer meeting on Wednesday night. It will be handed out there, and there will be a briefing from PFS staff.

Hi. I sent an email as well, but I haven't gotten my schedule yet. Last year there was an oddity where my schedule showed up in an email that I didn't use (for GenCon or Paizo.com). This year, that email address no longer exists, so I want to check if the oddity happened again.

I have slots that I owe (more than are available in 2014, in fact)! I want to start paying them off!

Not sure this has been answered yet. Do we know what the sub-tier breakdown will be for the Friday night special of the tier 1-11 adventure? OR can we at least hazard a good guess at what the breakdown would be, based on past years?

    Thanks all.

So far 100% of PFS things that go from 1-11 use the following subtiers:

    1-2
    3-4
    5-6
    7-8
    10-11

In theory this year could be different, but it doesn't seem likely.

Race for the Runecarved Key followed the same subtiers, but also had a 12+ subtier.
Siege of the of the Diamond City was the first special to include a (7–8) subtier. (1–2)(3–4)(5–6)(7–8)(10–11)(12–13)(14–15)

We'll have the badges and t-shirts at the Volunteer's meeting on Wednesday night. After that, we'll have them at HQ.

A couple of quick questions (I am guessing I know the answers).

    1) Are we expected to wear the volunteer t-shirts while GMing (and only while GMing?)

    2) Do we need to print out chronicles and/or session tracking sheets?

    3) How much time on either end of running the scenario should we budget for? i.e., should we figure on only have 4 hours real time to run?

    5/5 RPG Superstar 2012 Top 4

    1) Wear your volunteer T-shirts when you are volunteering. When not - wear what you like, including your volunteer shirt.
    2) You do not need to print out chronicle sheets or session tracking sheets.
    3) If marshalling is good, you should be able to get started within 5-10 minutes of the scheduled start time - assuming you have prompt players. At the end of the scenario, you've got paperwork to do. Never takes me more than 15 minutes.

Probably expected to wear them, but I don't believe it is required. I for one liked wearing them, and its fun to see the purple shirts all over GenCon.

    Silbeg wrote:

Nope, chronicle sheets and tracking sheets are all provided by HQ (unless this changes, since I think I heard their printing costs were in the tens of thousands last year)

    Silbeg wrote:

Well, slots are 5 hours, usually you'd want to have everything wrapped up and chronicles at least started being filled out by 4.5 hours, so yeah, probably close to 4 hours of real playing, unfortunately.

    1. We do expect volunteers to wear the shirts, so you'll be visible to staff and players as a volunteer. VOs, of course, can wear their respective shirts instead.

    2. HQ will provide Chronicles and reporting sheets.

    3. Slots are 5 hours and I'm hoping we'll have 30 minutes between slots*. We start mustering 15 minutes or so before the slot starts, so we'll expect GMs to be checked in by then.

*In past years we've had the first two slots back-to-back and a 1-hour gap between the 2nd & 3rd slot of the day. I haven't verified with Mike that we're changing that this year, but I'd like to.

Jon, in the slot listings in the call for volunteers it still shows the morning and afternoon slot back-to-back.

And about the shirts... Years ago, when volunteering for a different gaming company, some other volunteers wore their shirts out while going drinking and were not very good representatives of the company whose shirts they were wearing. I'm sure that Paizo would appreciate that if you were wearing your volunteer shirts with their name on them that you would not cause any negativity to their brand.

For the GMs that don't qualify for shirts, would it be helpful if we wore a particular color?

Well, the Paizo shirts are a bright purple, so if you really want to fit in... ;)

All good stuff to know. Thank you, everyone who answered. Pretty much what I expected.

I may still print out chronicles... Have some nicely parchment paper I was going to use for Con of the North, but never got around to. Would be a nice thing to have the
Gen Con chronicles stand out in a character's stack. It will all depend on weight.

Say, does anyone know a good battery backup for an iPad? Since this will be my primary means of carrying books, I think it would be good to have a buffer. Of course, my scenarios will be printed (looking into ways to reduce space and weight here as well, such as getting them spiral bound instead of using notebooks).

Maybe look into something like a portable electronics charger. My husband has one and seems to like it.

Speaking of shirts: this year can some stress be put on wearing the volunteer shirts? Last year a large number of marshals were wearing shirts advertising their local gaming group. It's great to see that kind of enthusiasm but it really didn't help identify them as the contact when trying to get the tables formed.

That shouldn't be a problem this year. Del and the rest of the SCARAB crew have been very helpful and understand that, as a Paizo event, we need everyone representing Paizo to be identifiable.

That's a point I can't reiterate enough. There are not enough power outlets in the Sagamore to accommodate even 10% of the GMs with electronic devices. I love my iPad and the space and weight savings it offers over hardcopy, but if you're planning on using electronic devices you need to be responsible for keeping them charged and running. Extra batteries, external batteries, whatever it takes.

Also keep in mind that the number of outlets in your hotel room will be limited, so if you're sharing (as most of our Tier 1/2 GMs are), you may need a power strip in the hotel room to plug in all the devices everyone brings with them.

One thing we CANNOT do is string power cords across the floor as it presents a safety hazard to players, GMs, and Marshals in a crowded room where the cord may be invisible under chairs, players, bags and cases.

To be fair, the one I have is for my iPhone, not an iPad. No idea how it would work out for the larger device since it, presumably, has a larger battery capacity.

As far as it goes for my phone, though, its awesome. Its just a tad bigger than a roll of nickels and it can be charged off the same charager plug the phone can. Just not at the same time.

To extend your battery life for tablet and laptop users:

    - Turn off your wi-fi and bluetooth (or just put it in airplane mode)
    - Manually adjust your screen brightness to the darkest level you're comfortable reading
    - Lock it when you're not using it

Do these three things and your battery life will be MUCH greater. I can GM 3 slots in a row from a fully charged iPad 2 using this method.

If you're burning through battery power faster than you expect, then find a plug to set next to during meal breaks. The portable chargers are also quite nice when you're in a pinch.

Your best bet is to print the scenarios and only use your tablet to reference things.

This. And then its a lot easier to make tabs, highlight different things, and take notes easily.

Yeah, I agree with Kyle and Andrew. Even my generic tablet can last me all day. But printing the stats/scenario is a must for long cons

That's definitely my plan, for sure.

I have it only for a reference... scenarios, stat blocks, etc... will all be printed out.

Wholeheartedly agreed. Even with a tablet, I printed everything out last year, and even though I didn't have to, I printed and pre-filled out chronicle sheets as well (sans pp and gp). I used my tablet as a backup reference source, and mainly for prepared full-color images of things from the scenario (monsters mainly).

This reminds me of something I wanted to note in case it hasn't been said already...

The GM Prep threads on the boards and the shared GM resources are amazing tools for prep-help as well as innovations for some scenarios... BUT ...before you use a stat-block that comes from anywhere but the scenario itself, double-check it in advance.

At Who's Yer Con, a GM had some monsters with 150% more hp than they should have had, almost resulting in PC deaths, during Siege of the Diamond City. Afterward, we discovered that the "GM help packet" for that tier had wrong hp values for at least two encounters. I'm sure 95% of those things are fine, but you don't want to have a PC die at your table and then later find out that something was wrong on your end even if it was without your knowledge.

I'll be in a similar situation. My partner shares his books with me, and I have a couple that get shared with him. This isn't a problem for local game nights; it will be at Gen Con. Neither of us possess computers with any semblance of battery lives.

I already planned on printing out all relevant material in advance; should this be sufficient for running encounters at the convention? You've [all] made it my understanding that space there is limited, so having 10 hardcovers with me isn't exactly efficient, either. I don't have a problem with it, and am very acclimated to carrying around all those books, but I'm led to believe the table real estate isn't there.

I pretty much have done this, and it works fine. I print out bestiary pages of all the monsters for a scenario and keep it in one of those cheap cardboard style folders with the scenario. If there's a new ability, feat, spell, etc. that they reference that I may have a hard time remembering from prep, I'll print that out too.

I only use my iPad to try and adjudicate the odd corner case in reaction to what players bring up, or verify a rule if a question arises.

As an avid contributor to the GM prep folder, if you or your friend remember the name of the scenario please PM me. We can try to get that fixed.

Another question for you Gencon Volunteer Veterans or GVV's for short. Besides preparing the scenarios and wearing our purple shirts what are some tips or some of your experiences with how everything works? Anything to watch out for or things not to do? This is all as far volunteering goes that is.

There are some non-gaming items you should have with you at the table and other things you should do:

    1. Water. Running more than even a couple of slots will tax your voice, particularly when you are in a room with 180 or so other tables. Keeping hydrated will not only help your throat, but will just be good for you overall. I know GMs who bring soda, but caffeine, while energy giving, also is something of a diuretic. So, I try to avoid sodas if I am going to be at the table for long periods of time.

    2. Snacks. Keep healthy snacks with you at the table. They'll be good for an energy boost, and if you are running slots back to back, you may not have time to get up and grab food. Now, people bring all kinds of stuff, and while the occasional candy is okay, you don't want to consume tons of sugar when you are just going to be sitting there. Now, as a diabetic, a healthy snack for me is different for others. But, make sure you have good stuff on hand.

    3. Medicine. We tend to take it for granted, but if you have meds that you need to take during a game or something, make sure you have it on hand.

    4. Hand sanitizer. You have no idea the amount of con crud that goes around. Using hand sanitizer can be really helpful in preparing a strong defense.

    5. Hygeine. It can't be said too much - shower, bathe, wear clean clothes, use deodorant, brush your teeth, etc. You would be amazed at the amount of gamer funk you'll be subjected to. It's not only a matter of courtesy, but sometimes it can be so bad as to distract people from the game. People will remember.

    6. Tissues, etc. You never know when you may need one to blow your nose, or to wipe up something off the table, etc.

    7. Get plenty of rest. Again, it cannot be said too much. I know it's tempting to want to run or play all day and night, and then rinse and repeat the next day. As GMs, we owe it to our players to try to give them the best experience possible, and being well-rested is key to that. Plus, it will help your voice.

    On the gaming materials side:
    1. Scenario. have your printed scenario and all resrouces that go with it: maps (if you can make them in advance, you will do your table a tremendous favor), stat blocks, rules you don't know off the top of your head, etc. You don't need to bring a scenario reporting sheet or chronicles (HQ will have them for you) (I always bring my own, and some GMs print chronicles on special paper to reflect that it was recieved at a major convention.)

    2. Boooks. Have your gaming books handy (either hard copy or on a tablet or laptop, but make sure you e-device is completely charged because you will not be able to do so while running.)

    3. Dice. Have your sets, and bring extras for new players or people who forget.

    4. Miniatures, pawns, etc.: Have minis or similar items for your encouanters, and bring extras for the players who forget theirs.

    5. Pencils, etc. Bring whatever writing instruments work best for you, and bring a few extra for those who forget.

    6. GM screen. Completely optional - some use them, some don't.

Keep in mind you don't have a lot of real estate at the table, so you don't want to bring too much stuff.

    I hope that's helpful

Also, do not underestimate the power of baby/body powder- it absorbs moisture, smells good, and keeps you from chaffing after being in the rooms all day with hundreds of other people.

Those of you using an electronic device to GM or play may wish to consider a purchase from here: http://www.woot.com/plus/gorilla-gadgets-power-banks-1

Note that a number of them are good to fully recharge a tablet. Don't buy them last minute, as you want to try it out before you actually head to the con.
