Advanced Class Guide

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Just a few weeks ago, we announced the Pathfinder RPG Advanced Class Guide, an exciting new addition to the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game due out next summer. While we talked about it a fair bit at Gencon, this blog post is here to get you caught up on all the news!

This 256-page rulebook will contain 10 new classes, each a mix of two existing classes, taking a bit from each class and adding new mechanics to give you a unique character. Around the office we're calling them "hybrid classes." You can think of the magus (from Ultimate Magic) as our first test of this concept. It takes some rules from the fighter, some rules from the wizard, and then adds its own unique mechanics.

At this point, you're probably wondering what new classes you can expect to see in the Advanced Class Guide. So far, we've announced five of the ten classes.

Bloodrager: This blend of sorcerer and barbarian can call upon the power of his blood whenever he goes into a rage. He also has a limited selection of spells he can call upon, even when in a mindless fury!

Hunter: Taking powers from both the druid and the ranger, the hunter is never without her trusted animal companion, hunting down foes with lethal accuracy.

Shaman: Calling upon the spirits to aid her, the shaman draws upon class features of the oracle and the witch. Each day, she can commune with different spirits to aid her and her allies.

Slayer: Look at all the blood! The slayer blends the rogue and the ranger to create a character that is all about taking down particular targets.

Warpriest: Most religions have martial traditions, and warpriests are often the backbones of such orders. This mix of cleric and fighter can call upon the blessings of the gods to defeat enemies of their faiths.

Of course, those are just half the classes in this book. There are four more we have yet to reveal.

"Four?" you say. "But I thought there were ten!" And you would be right—because I'm about to let you in on another of the classes that will appear in this book, which we haven't announced until this moment!

Swashbuckler: Break out your rapier and your wit! The swashbuckler uses panache and daring to get the job done, blending the powers of the fighter and the gunslinger! For those of you who don't use guns in your campaign, fear not—the base class is not proficient in firearms (although there will certainly be an archetype in the book that fix that).

But that's not all! This book will also contain archetypes for all 10 new classes, as well as a selection to help existing classes play with some of the new features in this book. There will also be feats and spells to support these new classes, as well as magic items that will undoubtedly become favorites for nearly any character. Last but not least, the final chapter in this book will give you a peek inside the design process for classes and archetypes, giving you plenty of tips and guides to build your own! Since class design is more art than science, this won't be a system (like in the Advanced Race Guide), but rather a chapter giving you advice on how the process works.

So, there you go. That's six of the 10 classes that will appear in the Advanced Class Guide and an overview of what else you can expect from this exciting new book. While it's due to release next August, you won't have to wait too long to get your hands on these classes, because we're planning to do a public playtest here this fall! Check back here for more news as the playtest draws close!

If that's your issue, I would recommend looking at the Sandman Bard as mentioned above. It's a very good took on the Spellthief concept without pidgeonholing the character into absolutely having to steal spells to be useful (I really like this archetype because it's like taking the Spellthief class, the Beguiler class (which I loved) and Bard... and SMASHING them together into a glorious combination of deceit).

Isn't that what the ninja's for? ;)

And thank God. I've spent the last two months figuring on a way to make firearms work with a fighter/rogue into duelist, the main obstacle being you can't get the grit mechanic to work with Intelligence.

I'd love to have a class called Warlock: Witch/Summoner. Curses and A pact with a dark entity. Destructive dark magic and the summoning of evil outsiders.

There are just to many awesome combinations of the existing classes to make a book of only 10. And for some reason most of the ones i can think of involve the summoner.

I hope to have a class with the monk being combined with something, Anything really.

A Monk/Druid? Monk/Inquisitor? Monk/Rogue?

I'd like to see a rogue variant that gives up sneak attack and gets flurry of blows.

Welp, if I was to lay my bets. Now that Bestiary 4 is out, playtest should be sooner.

I'm expecting a Wizard/Cleric hybrid in there somewhere.

Just seems inevitable to me.

The trick is to make it interesting instead of "I have a really huge list of spells" which I'm confident the PF Crew can manage

I hope so, but I have a feeling it will mirror the Mythic release (Nov. 14th).

Hopefully just posting this has jinxed that date and it comes sooner ^^

Bestiary 4 had been shipped to the printers long ago...I doubt that played any significant role in the release of the playtest.

But yeah, might be wishful thinking, but November would be a good time to release it, especially with all the Nov releases getting pushed back into December.

Not to repeat myself, but isn't that what the ninja is for? Only not giving up sneak attack? :p Seriously, fighting unarmed as a monk of ninja level -4 (and then wearing a monk's robe) is one of the ninja tricks.

Now that I'm thinking about it the Cleric/Wizard hybrid could be the Scholarly European style Monk. Bookworm priest who devotes himself to studying and transcribing holy books, cataloging divine miracles and researching the mysteries of the gods.

Isn't that basically the cloistered cleric?

or 3.5 archivist class

Outlook not good :(

The primary reason was they felt that it couldn't fit multiple 'jobs' in a party, and they usually don't like to pigeonhole classes that much as it would someone who 'creates magic items'. Personally, I thought a little imagination and divorcing themselves from the 3.5 artificer would open up many possible roles within a party, but that's what I recall as the reason.

Sounds like you are wanting to play the Weaponsmith from Earthdawn. Basically, a fighter who has Armor/Weaponsmithing who can both improve weapons at the forge and has a magical ability to imbue weapons temporarily.

Alternately, the Mystic Kuznya from RIFTS Russia.

I'd play that, but I think I more want a skillful type rather than the brutesmashywashy.

A sort of Cleric/Magus FF2 (US) could be really cool.

Or a Cleric or Paladin/Magus Hexblade.

I know there are a couple of 3rd party artificers floating around. LPJ made the Machinesmith for Neo-Exodus which is kind of an Alchemist/Summoner hybrid

Liberty's Edge

A non monk unarmed fighter, an aura based class (like dragon shaman/marshal) and another trapfinding class are on my list if wants.

Also, noticed that SKR hasn't posted in a loooooooong while, which I take to mean he is working on the playtest document very long hours.

i hope so, i would love to get my paws on the playtest soon! im dying for it!!! and they said it would be out this fall and it is going to be november very soon, so im hoping with blood of the moon and bestiary four both out of the way we will get the playtest next!

Considering there are no new books coming out in November, I'd put gold pieces on this coming out next month.

How many gold pieces?

I wonder if They enjoy watching us squirm and being ready to explode?

They are probably working on the playtest and squirming ready to explode themselves to get it done before it backs up other projects.

So is that an Advanced² Class Guide?

I'm sure the answer to this question is somewhere in here, but I didn't want to sift through all one thousand comments.

Does anyone know where and how Paizo is going to announce the release of the playtest for this?

I'd say the Paizo blog for where.

When? Not sure at all. They just said "this fall".

Can't be too long, considering it's already november (well, in a few hours where paizo is located).

I've been reading Tim Akers's The Horns of Ruin and the main character is a paladin that self-buffs like a magus, or even a 3.5 Book of Nine Swords martial adept. She uses lots of historical events from her deity's past to name and power her abilities, which is really neat, too. She also has varying degrees in different paths. For example, she has lots of blade path buffs, is pretty competent in mobility and defensive path buffs, but is a bit lacking in gun path buffs.

Yeah, she's a paladin/magus/gunslinger. And her scabbard might be kind of sentient, or semi-alive, at least.

So basically, I think a self-buffing paladin would be fun. It would be neat if they could squeeze a full BAB and a really tight 6 level caster combo, casting almost exclusively buffing spells.

I'm really curious as to what spell list the Shaman will be using. It draws class features from both the witch, and the oracle.. Casts divine spells. My best guess is it will use the druid spell list, since it could use a spontaneous caster variant of it.

I actually presume it will be a spontaneous witch, and we would get the spontaneous druid in another form, considering we need spont versions of both classes.

I’m really excited about this book and this playtest.

Bloodrager: will this be a full BAB class with the same spell progression as the Paladin and ranger? That would make sense. We have two full BaB 4/9 divine casters, but no full BAB arcane caster. Will the Bloodrager get Cantrips?

Hunter: This is not for me, but I know there are people out there that likes pet, so it is good that Paizo is making them happy.

Shaman: I’m not really a fan of prepared full casters and I never did like the witch: don’t like the pet and not enough with protective spells and battle control spells. The Shaman could be just what I want or perhaps not.

Slayer: I would really love if this class gets something like smite evil or Ranger's Focus instead of sneak attack and favored enemy since I dislike bot SA and FE. My favorite ranger archetype is the Guide and Ranger's Focus is the main reason. Slayer could be something I love or hate. Regardless it’s a fitting and cool combination.

Warpriest: This is the class that intrigues me most. Is this going to be a full BAB class with a domain and some spell or is this a 6/9 caster with ¾ BAB? If this is a ¾ BAB class how will it differ from the cleric or even the Inquisitor? I really hope for a full BAB class with same spell progression as the Paladin, but with a lot of cool Su and some Spell like abilities. Since they are probably going to try some new stuff in this book I’m hoping for full BAB and 4/9 caster like the Paladin, but with Orisons at level 1. This would grant it full caster level. And some powers similar to the magus so it once per day (or more) cast quicken spells or enhance its weapon. Even if this turns out to be yet another 6/9 caster with it 3/4 BAB it could still be interesting, but there could be a risk of it ending up being Inquisitor with a Magus flavor. I know there are a lot of people that want to play something like a Paladin, but without the restricting of LG and code of conduct, so I’m hoping for a full BAB class.

Swashbuckler: I’m so excited and worried about this class. This could turn out to be my new favorite class or become my greatest disappointment ever. I probably have too high expectations, but I try to tell myself that as long as it gets full BAB, 4 skills per level and doesn’t end up being a class with lots of fluff and no real Ompf it will be OK.

Any news on the other classes?

edit:

I agree. A spontaneous caster variant with the druid list would be real cool. Druid spells, arcane spells as 'domain spells' and hexes.

BTW, I hope we get some more Oracle's Curses.

They kind of did a little bit of a mix with the bombs and wizard but what about a wizard/alchemist mix. It would be somewhat like an artificer I guess but at the same time it could be really interesting. Imagine making potions of any spell not just up to 3rd level. Or making things like spellbombs using the words of power option from ultimate magic.

A 6th spell level combat casting class that focuses almost entirely on buffing themselves? Sounds like the Inquisitor to me...

Personally I loved the idea someone else had of the Alchemist/Summoner, who gets a quasi golem as their "eidolon".

Dark Archive

I don't want more pseudo-summoners... they messed that class up too much the first time...

If the Warpriest becomes more holy warrior than priest, then it infringes on the Paladin.

If the Warpriest has alot of buffing/combat spells, my battle cleric looks silly by comparison.

Either way I'm going to be frustrated. =/

Highly unlikely, I don't believe those rules are part of the SRD, so not able to be touched. Something similar, but not called gestalt, might be possible, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Stand corrected.

A LOT of Unearthed Arcana made it into the SRD - check the "Variant Rules" column at the bottom.

I would be really surprised if they released a spontaneous witch as a divine class. But I suppose it is within the realm of possibilities considering all the new classes and the spell lists they may or may not draw from.

And if the playtest has no info out today, I assume we will be waiting at least another week!

Yeah, I had it pegged at late this month due to a comment from Sean, but it seems I was wrong. :(

I really hope they have spontaneous druid and spontaneous witch variants, even if they're combined in the same class.

Sorry...but I don't see how there's possibly a way to "blend" ranger and druid...they're not enough differences to be able to make a completely separate class.

To me anything and everything that can be thought of as a combination of the two could easily be comprised within adding a singular archetype or two. The same thing could really be said about the warpriest...where I love new class ideas that have come up before (witch, oracle, inquistor etc), several of these sound like they're trying to shoe horn in more classes when they're not needed. I would rather concentrate on 5-6 new classes that are complete in and amongst themselves...than water things down with "half-classes" that truly belong as some simplistic archetype changes.

The Shaman and Bloodrager in the list sound like potential true class options...the others not so much. The swashbuckler was always a roleplaying choice easily accomplished through bardic/rogue archetypes.
