"I think it's important to maintain good sportsmanship. Especially if one's opponents are terrible. They do seem to need any help we can provide, after all, and that's what we're here for." Josef shakes his head disapprovingly. "I would never mock such a poor performance. I'm sure they feel bad enough already. I mean, look at them."
Deception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
GM chadius |
No one beat the DC to distract the mercenaries.
King Zusgut doesn't seem to notice your antics. Instead he laughs louder and louder over the goblins' boos until the mercenary leader screams. "FINE ! Let's see the Pathfinders do better!" She marches off stage and her allies are glad to get out of the spotlight (and raining fiery fruit.) Velkik's eyes are wide open as the fire spreads through the stage debris. Her hopes are dashed as the cleanup crew quickly clears the stage. They're good at this.
The goblins clap as you are ushered onto the stage. They begin clapping in unison and declaring you the champion!
...until Velkik blows a gout of flame from her mouth to get everyone's attention. "Let them perform first before we judge them, yes?" She grins. "And now... We Be Heroes!" She gestures to you as the crowd cheers.
Time for a performance! Feel free to describe your acting style. Each performer must roll a Performance check. Here's the play if there are parts you wish to act. Or you can just roll.
ZUSGUT - Josef
CRIMSI - Niccollo
GRENEK - Taigan
SIATHORN - Amanita
MITZI (a wolf, not a dog) - Hungry, being ridden by Barry (its a comedy duo)
PIZAZZ, and ULTHUN (a human) - Clebsch
Rise of the Goblin Heroes, a True and Accurate Account by Zusgut, King of the Goblins in Absalom
Act V, Scene 1
Enter ZUSGUT, CRIMSI, GRENEK, SIATHORN, MITZI (a wolf, not a dog), PIZAZZ, and ULTHUN (a human).
ZUSGUT (from atop his throne): I see the great heroes have returned! But who is this with you?Speak, brave knight.
ULTHUN: Oh mighty chief of the goblins, whose wit and skill are unsurpassed, I am called Ulthun, Watcher-Lord of Lastwall. Alas, that land has been overrun by undead and is no more!
GRENEK (hops forward): Is true. Undead everywhere.
SIATHORN: But we helped them escape! The longshanks. Not the undead.
MITZI: Woof!
CRIMSI: I helped collapsed the tunnel behind us. It was great!
PIZAZZ (huffily): I found people who appreciate my singing. Here, let me show you. (clears throat)
GRENEK: Quiet! Chief’s speaking!
(PIZAZZ grumbles.)
ULTHUN (to ZUSGUT): Please, my lord, we beseech you and ask the help of your mighty tribe. We are but mere humans and lack the cleverness and skill needed to escape the clutches of the undead. Will you aid us?
ZUSGUT: Of course, of course! Crookedtoes, my people, harken to me! Now is the time foretold, the time when the longshanks would come before us in desperate need.
GRENEK: We help too! We know how to fight undead longshanks!
SIATHORN: Yes, Mitzi will tear them apart with wolfish fierceness!
MITZI: Bark!
PIZAZZ: And I will compose a war song to lift our hearts.
(ALL except PIZAZZ groan.)
CRIMSI: No, no, no. We need my catapult!
ZUSGUT: I think we need to hurry; no time for catapults or songs. Prepare for the journey south and into our destiny! Now, WE be heroes!
ALL GOBLINS (cheering together): We be heroes! We be heroes! We be heroes!
GM chadius |
If this were live or in person we'd be able to swap lines. But this is PbP, so it would be way too slow. Instead feel free to either describe your individual lines, or just give a general description of your performance. I only need 1 Performance check from each of you.
Granny Deadybones |
Perform 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Granny gets a hold of the children and puts on her best kindergarten teacher running a pantomime voice - "Hungry and Barry need a hand - so all of you and I are going to do our VERY BEST woof and BARK when I give the signal, and you kids are going to bark and woof loudly!"
The above check os to cover for the wolf and the tebbybear probably doing something silly
Taigan |
Taigan does his best to imitate a small, froglike goblin.
"Ah--IS TRUE! UNDEAD EVERYWHERE!" he says in his loudest voice.
Perform: 1d20 ⇒ 17
He pulls out his air bladder and points it, like an Alkenstar pistol, into the distance. Miraculously, it inflates on its own!
Basic Kinesis. Spooooky!
Clebsch Gordan |
Clebsch does his best to deliver his lines without reference to the script.
Performance: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
He does about as well as a cowboy on Broadway might be expected to do.
Josef Shaison |
"I see the great heroes have returned. But who is this with you. Speak brave knight."
Oh, that's far too stiff.
"Of course of course. Crookedtotes my people harken to me. Now is the time forebold the time when the loansharks would come before us in desperate need."
It does not say "loansharks."
"I think we need to hurry no time for catapults or songs. Prepare for the journey south and into our destiny. Now, WE be heroes.
"We be heroes we be heroes we be heroes."
That's not a cheer at all.
Performance: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Oh. Maybe the king will be sympathetic instead of insulted?
GM chadius |
Granny is able to rouse the younger goblins into barking and howling at the right times, while Taigan is able to rally the audience.
Clebsch's acting scores a few boos from the crowd, but Josef magnifies the noise. They even bring out a metal gong and begin bashing it. Niccolo wonders if he's needed at this point.
It's up to Amanita & Barry to keep the crowd pleased.
I'll move us on in a few hours. Niccolo and Amanita have a chance to roll.
Subject V115.04-A "Amanita" |
Performance: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 Hero Point: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11 Well, hopefully it's at least not a crit failure.
"But we helped them escape! The longshanks. Not the undead."
"Yes, Mitzi will tear them apart with wolfish fierceness!"
The leshy, while an experienced performer, is clearly unaccustomed to doing the performance so directly.
Subject V115.04-B "Barry" |
Performance: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
The bear's movements, in an attempt to recreate the necessary "wolfish fierceness", are somehow simultaneously too stiff and too floppy for the needed effect.
GM chadius |
"Boo!" The goblins begin throwing rotting fruit at the stage.
Success: Nothing.
Failure: Gah! Now you're smelly!
Zusgut raises his hands for silence, and most of the goblins quiet down or wander off. “Well that was exciting,” he says. “But now it’s time for the tough decision.” The king pauses dramatically, and from somewhere nearby a goblin beats a drum in a rhythm reminiscent of a heartbeat.
“It’s a difficult choice,” Zusgut continues, drawing out the moment. “But I have to say that one performance...” he pauses as the drum continues to beat. “Rose above the other.” Another pause. “Today, the winner is...” He stops again, and now the goblins are all paying close attention. “The Pathfinders!” A cheer rises up at his words.
The mercenaries sulk to a corner. The leader grumbles at her minions, but they keep to themselves.
"Well, what a great show!" King Zusgut leaps off the throne. "A deal is a deal. There is a gigantic monster in the basement. It is very, very big, has a giant mouth, sharp teeth, and is green... at least that's what I heard."
He leads you to the entrance to the basement.
Any more questions for the king? Or are you ready to go in?
Clebsch Gordan |
Clebsch takes off his hat and bows dramatically, as if to thunderous applause.
Reflex: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
He nimbly avoids the fruit.
He asks the king, "Have you set any lamps up for light?"
Expecting it to be dark, he takes a torch out of his pack and attaches it to his shield with a shield sconce and prepares to light it.
Granny Deadybones |
Ref 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Granny also avoids the fruit being thrown, "Ahhh they love it! This is just Goblin applause!"
"Dear King, what have you and the tribe found so far again? I suspect there is more than rats down there...can you tell us what beasts you may have noticed?"
GM chadius |
"Hmm. Light. I wish I thought of that!" King Zusgut scratches his chin. "Then again, we are always prepared!" Right on cue, Velkik calls a few goblins to arrive with sticks wrapped in oily rags.
“Now, what lies beneath is very, very big, has a giant mouth, sharp teeth, and is green.” He mentions. "Our scouts noted a lack of fire and NO dogs."
"The water rises and lowers in the basement. For 6 hours or so it should be low enough for you to walk through."
If you haven't, now is the time to make your daily preparations.
Subject V115.04-A "Amanita" |
Reflex: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Multiple rotten tomatoes hit the leshy, and they simply remove them from their costume and begins eating it.
"Well, what a great show!" King Zusgut leaps off the throne. "A deal is a deal. There is a gigantic monster in the basement. It is very, very big, has a giant mouth, sharp teeth, and is green... at least that's what I heard."
"Ooh, interesting."
If a Recall Knowledge check is available from that alone, Amanita has a +3 Arcana, +4 Nature, and +3 Outer Rifts Lore.
Also, they'll use the scroll of mystic armor here.
Taigan |
Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
The Tian-La preternaturally dodges all the fruit as if he has been doing that sort of thing his whole life.
"Big, green, teeth, no fire. Sounds great." He waggles his fingers dramatically to make winds move about and grins. "Well, I'm ready. No need to look for two humps on a single-humped camel."
He arches an eyebrow at Amanita, and then nods after a moment. "Riiiiight. Fungus eats plants."
Josef Shaison |
Reflex: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Josef is better at avoiding thrown objects than he is at acting.
"I can light my wayfinder if you need it," he offers as he readies his bow, "but I do try to keep to the back of the group."
GM chadius |
Twisted and bloated, the wooden stairs connecting the main floor and basement are slick and saturated with water. The walls are covered in algae and the ceiling is coated with black mold, while old furniture and props from the theater are piled in the corners in soggy, crumbling heaps. Small crustaceans and numerous insects occasionally peek from the detritus or scramble into cracks or the shallow pools on the floor. The smell of rot and salt water hangs damply in the air.
To the west, a section of the brick wall has crumbled into a heap, creating an opening into a larger area beyond.
This area is completely dark. If you don't have darkvision you'll need some way to provide light.
It isn't long until you notice the monster: a large quadruped with razor sharp teeth and a long scaly tail. Crocodile? Alligator? Who knows, it's really large.
Well, more like monsters. A second one with a White-tipped tail quickly whirls around to protect the Red-tipped creature.
If anyone has Wild Empathy or a way to talk to reptiles, they may make a Diplomacy check to calm them down.
Clebsch Gordan |
Clebsch has set one of the torches into a sconce on his shield. When he sees the lizards, he raises his shield and draws his sword, but waits to see if anyone can communicate with them.
GM chadius |
I assume no one has access to Wild Empathy or similar ability.
The lizards strike!
Granny: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Josef: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Taigan: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Clebsch: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Niccolo: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Amanita: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
White: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Red: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
The white-tailed lizard moves first against Clebsch, who has kept his shield up, just in case!
Bite: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
Tail: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 10 - 4 = 15
And it pays off, protecting him from a nasty bite and sharp tail!
Clebsch Gordan |
Clebsch tries a feint before thrusting his sword at the belly of the beast.
Deception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Longsword: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
Damage, P: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Then he raises his shield again.
◆ Feint ◆ Strike ◆ Raise Shield
Note: Clebsch can make an Attack of Opportunity if triggered.
Josef Shaison |
Trusting the others to deal with the closer "monster," Josef focuses on the one behind it.
He holds out a hand and presses downward, trying to magically squeeze the strength out of the beast.
He also takes a shot at with his bow.
◆◆ Cast Enfeeble on Red, DC 18 Fort
◆ Strike Red +1 longbow: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25 (certainly has cover, but I'd have a Volley penalty for the other one) for piercing damage: 1d8 ⇒ 5, plus deadly if crit: 1d10 ⇒ 7
GM chadius |
The lizard with the White tail ignores Clebsch's feint. Maybe it should have, as his sword pierces the beast's belly.
Josef focuses his aim and shoots the one in the back, before seizing its strength. It grows noticeably weaker!

Subject V115.04-A "Amanita" |
While Barry remains unable to reach the lizards effectively, Amanita produces another puppet, its sown-on eyes suddenly making eye contact with the nearest lizard, not breaking as, with their other hand, Amanita hurls a ball of acid at the lizard.
◆ Demoralize, Intimidating Glare: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
◆◆ Caustic Blast, DC 17 Reflex: 1d8 ⇒ 2 + 1 persistent acid
GM chadius |
White Reflex: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
The lizard avoids most of Amanita's splash, but Granny gives it the old One-Two, hitting both times!
Niccolo has line of sight to the White lizard. I'll move us along in a few hours.

Taigan draws upon his gate to the Plane of Air, causing the currents to draw inward from their endless swirl, and then reach out to touch Granny, Clebsch, Amanita, and Josef!
Four Winds. Extra 1/2 Stride in Round 2. Kinetic gate was already activated.
He then slides north and westward without moving his feet, and unleashes a blast of cold and icicles.
Impulse Junction to do a 1/2 stride, 1 action Elemental Blast w Versatile Blast.
Elemental Blast: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
for: 1d6 ⇒ 5
GM chadius |
Niccolo's force bolt is too high to hit the lizard, but Taigan's wind chills it. He then blows a gust of wind to help his friends move.
Niccolo, I delayed you to keep the battle moving. You can retroactively take Round 1's actions. Please do this before the end of round 2.
The White-tailed Lizard continues to bite, but now with 2 juicy targets.
Even is Clebsch: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Jaws: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
Tail: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 10 - 4 = 19
Tail: 1d20 + 10 - 8 ⇒ (5) + 10 - 8 = 7
And nothing to show for it.

Spell Description
You point your finger and project a bolt of magical energy that stutters in and out of phase until it reaches the target. Make a ranged spell attack roll against your target's AC; if the target has any circumstance bonuses to AC (such as from a shield or cover), reduce that bonus by 2 for this attack. On a success, you deal 3d4 piercing damage. On a critical success, the target takes double damage.
GM chadius |
Granny Deadybones isn't able to get a good aim, but Niccolo fires another blast that pierces the lizard's hide. It sputters and collapses. The remaining lizard opens its jaws and prepares to charge.

GM chadius |
Clebsch and Barry quickly flank the lizard, and Barry manages to bop it on the snout, leaving a large bruise.
Taigan moves in to follow up, but his shot is too high. Taigan, you move after Red. I'll count that as your Round 2 actions, since it won't affect much.

Josef delays to better assess the situation.
The red lizard snaps at a stuff bear and a man behind a shield.

Bludgeoning: 1d6 + 4 - 3 ⇒ (1) + 4 - 3 = 2
It chomps onto Barry and tries to hold, but the stuffed bear is much too small and wriggles free. The lizard slaps Barry with its tail. Amanita feels the cuts and bruises forming on her body.
Josef's magic seems to have withered the beast's strength- the teeth and tail were much weaker than they should have been.

Taigan
Niccolo
Clebsch
Granny
Amanita (6 damage)

Carried forward by the win, Josef keeps the beast in sight.
