Quick question for those more experienced with 2e PbP. I was planning on having liberating step on my champion, which let's those I'm protecting take a step in the middle of a monsters' turn. Ideally, this would mean they can get out of danger and force the monster to make another move action if they want to continue their assault. However, it seems the nature of PbP would make this difficult without slowing things down too much. Have any of you seen liberating played on these forums? I could just take the paladin cause if it's too awkward, but figured I'd ask first.

I believe I have seen it done a couple ways. One way is to employ a retcon. If you see an opponent has acted and Noggin has a reaction, you can simply include in your next post what Noggin would have done and we can retcon the actions as necessary. While doing a retcon is rarely ideal, given that this is a low level scenario and what I know of the nature of the potential combats, it shouldn't be too difficult to do.
Another way, which could avoid retcons or reduce the impact of them, is to include a spoiler in your combat posts along the lines of...

I've found best practices is to make sure to include a note on your actions with plans for reactions like Valen's spoiler.
Most of the time to GM will remember. Cccasionally they'll miss it, or forget and then you can just make a post reminding them of your reaction and in my experience the GM is basically always generous with retconning as needed to make your reaction work, especially if you've made your reactions known in advance.
If your reaction involves dice rolls, I try and put those in a spoiler so the GM can be surprised if they want to be.
---
A lot of pbp can go smoother if you make it clear to the GM what you want to do, and then trust them to finesse the fine details if needed, and reactions are no different.
Some examples:
Surrounded by foes, Orin tries to hold his guts in with his shield and desperately lashes out with his axe.
Raise Shield (AC 22), will block as long as shield isn't fully destroyed. Target preference is Red than blue, than yellow.
dice= blah blah b
If down to once foe and they provoke, will take AoO if shield block reaction hasn't already been used.
---
Water Kineticist with push and slide on a single AoE
Posts my Fighter 10 with multiple reactions and multiple options
---
Obviously things that move targets as reactions are the most likely to be disruptive, but just be clear ahead of time about intentions, and politely remind the GM when they forget.
Sometimes GMs will even do things like: ...and John steps away tanks to the Champion's Liberating Step. (When you get a chance pick one of the squares to the west to step to) and let you be more specific about the detail if they don't need to know it right away.

Thanks guys! I'll try liberating strike for this scenario, and if it is too clunky for PbP, I'll retrain for the next one :)

Do you have a RPG Chronicles link you want us to sign in at?
BTW, you have March 6th listed as the start date, but Outpost officially begins March 4th. Was that intentional? I don't mind a 2 day delay, but I want to make sure that is not a typo.
GM Valen |
It is not a typo. I find that a slight delay in start times for conventions and game days make for smoother starts as there is less competition and the specials, in particular, often call for some extra input early on ..
I will be posting a RPG Chronicles link in the next couple of days.

Stopping by to say Hi, looking forward to play with you all. I'm in the UK so might post at different times.

A little later than planned, but the link is now up and can be found here.
Jacknife |
Jacknife has been replaced by Drakmak, as I just realised that Jacknife participated in this scenario.
So fighter/rogue is replaced by a wizard/artisan...funnily enough both from Quadira and the markets, just very different.
I'll update Drakmak's details over the weekend, that's the plan.

So why is this transaction between Ellvard and the Runelord important. He is not one of the folks we are looking for, right? I apologize if I am slow, I am suffering trough a head cold right now and am not thinking well.

At present, the party does not know why, or even if, the transaction is important. (Gathering Information may reveal more, but it takes time and is not guaranteed to work).

Were any glyphs distributed to Achurius?
Each player started with 2 Hero Points.

A summary of what we know/have accomplished, from what I can tell...
Filtch: Just located him. Has papers we would like to improve on.
Themolin: Very rich and a key 'customer' of Garla. He's the one we might find at the Ministry of Tithes making it an important place to visit.
Yuleg: Healed his daughter. He is ready to leave.
Dafrid: Teaches at the Acadamy. We have not tried to locate him yet.
Garla: We are not sure who this is. Nobody recognized the name at the guardhouse, but the captain secretly passed us some info on Ellvard. The captain could be using us to get at Ellvard or could be Garla or Ellvard could be Garla. Heck, Garla could be made up and could be a lure set by the government. Garla is a bit of a mystery right now and potentially a dangerous lead.
Daffrid is a woman. Otherwise, the above looks like a fairly accurate summary of what the party has learned thus far.
Noggin NineToes |
The captain is definitely garla, and she let us know that Elvard will be on guard when we leave so that we know we could bribe or blackmail him. Whether or not it's an elaborate trap is anyone's guess, but Noggin id the trusting kind though :)

As way of explanation, Tuesday night was a very special night for Portsmouth and still can't think of anything else for the moment. See Twitter for why, although it won't mean much to you. Also yesterday had to take my wife to the airport as she's off to Japan for a cruise, and has been very anxious about it all.
Normal service will be resumed next week, but I will posting.
