Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Discussion Thread!

If you could post in with the following info:

Character Name
Character Level
SFS #
Faction you're repping for this mission
If your character has played any of the following scenarios: 1–36: Enter the Ashen Asteroid, #2–05: Meeting of Queens, #2–06: The Stumbling Society, Part 1: Sangoro’s Lament, #2–08: The Stumbling Society, Part 2: Sangoro’s Gifts, #2–10: Bluerise Breakout, and #2-18 Forbidden Tides, #2-20 Shades of Spite

Also note that this is a Starship tagged scenario, so here would be a good place to touch base on who may take which starship role and whihc ship you may want.

Starship: Troivayan is undependable and will likely be getting high in his room while aboard a starship. He has some skill in Engineering and Mysticism, and a spotty employment record as a janitor. (I do have a neat array of starship boons to pick from!)

(will need to level him up and update tagline)

Looks like a newly-level 9 character won't break tier, so, I'll join in! This character is a heavy weapons AoE specialist soldier; I also have a lvl 9 sniper/spellshot technomancer, but that looks very similar to Safel's build, so I'll go for the soldier.

I have played this before, so I'll be consuming a replay (I don't remember much, though, and I'll of course keep what little I recall to myself!)

Character Name: Varuthalla
Character Level: 9 (Soldier 8 / Stunt & Strike Operative 1)
SFS #: 127582-706
Faction you're repping for this mission: Acquisitives (is this one of those scenarios where you must slot a Second Seekers faction boon to earn boons on the chronicle sheet? I vaguely remember a few of those in s2.)
Played any of the following scenarios: 2-06
Starship Combat: Varuthalla is an excellent pilot, gunner, engineer, or chief mate (or captain, via a hireling boon) and if needs be a passable science officer. Usually she'll let others pick roles and fill in the gaps.

Got a couple options for who to send on this mission:

Kōlēfō, Skittermander Operative 11
Kneepuncher, Halfling Vanguard 9
Kosigan, Khizar Nanocyte 9 (played 2-10)

Since we look to be low tier, I will take Kosigan unless someone has a strong opinion to the contrary. It is a blind melee fighter (many alternative ways to perceive). It is probably best as Chief Mate (+20) but can serve as Gunner (+10), Engineer (+15) or Pilot (+16) or Captain-via-hireling (+17). It can also either replace a light weapon with an aeon caster or upgrade one ship's system.

Aww, I remember Varuthalla from when he was a junior agent shooting liquor bottles in the Vault of Vorlath (though that sheet is not on any of these characters).

Aww, takes me back! I look forwards to "destroying many bottles of booze when rolling Nat 1s" this adventure :D

As luck would have it, when I GM'd Kosigan through 2-22, I assigned my GM chronicle to Varuthalla - so, in a sense, Kosigan and Varuthalla have beaten up space-mummies together (although maybe it was only alternate reality witchwarped versions that beat up space-mummies together...) In any case, I'm using my PF2 Hero Point in this SF game to narratively declare that Kosigan and Varuthalla know each other already, since it's more fun when PCs have a history together.

2 people marked this as a favorite.
Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Average level is 10.0 not counting your PC cmlobue so we'll definitely be low tier regardless of our 6th PC.

And yes: Magic Officer is pretty nice. Many of its options overlap with other Ship Roles but I'm a big fan of having alternate options to let more builds engage with Starship Combat and have advocated before that a Starship Boon to give a ships weapons the 'mystical' property seems like a no-brainer ACP boon imo :P

Finally A Slides link has been posted at the top of the campaign and in my profile bio line. The amp and images of NPCs/other things are there.

If you could also (when you have the chance, not as vital during a space fight) add you PC icons to the 'Marching Order' bits on Slide 2 that would be useful on the off-chance guns and blades might be drawn somewhere down the line...

So, between what was posted above and what we're good at, I'm going to suggest our initial Starship Combat roles look like this?
Captain: (via Hireling lol) Kosigan
Pilot: Gunnz
Science Officer: Sefel
Engineering: Gil-Oloth
Chief Mate: Troivayan
Gunner: Varuthalla

Since this is a Drake and we have opportunities for multiple Gunners, I think anyone so inclined can feel free to hop in/out of Gunnery, as they wish! Varuthalla is decent at Piloting, Engineering, and Chief Mate, too, so if anyone wants to switch out of those roles, just ask - she can sub in.

@GM Zoomba - we're in a Tier 10 Drake, yeah?

Ack on Science Officer. That was one of Sefel's choices. Agreed on Gunnery: when a science action isn't useful he'll jump over to a gun.

Boons I forget how this works. Is it pretty much one per slot type? Seems like a lot of Sefel's boons are social, slotless, or starship boons for much-lower-tier starships.

I have a light aeon torpedo upgrade boon that allows replacement of one starship weapon, but it's unclear to me whether there's benefit in using it over existing Drake weapons (taking input).

Social Society Exemplar (Second Seekers - Luwasi) count as at least reputation tier 2
Ally Always Prepared (Dataphiles tier 3): One use. Init +4, declared pre-roll. Alternatively, Init +2 after seeing roll.

Correct: A Tier 10 Drake, as you are playing in the 9-10 subtier

Also, as a rmeinder each of you begins this encounter with a bonus Resolve Point to use during this encounter at 8th level all PCs get a 'free' extra RP for each Starship encounter as part of the base rules (and a 2nd at 16th level), but it is very very often forgotten about :p

The real draw of Aeon weaponry is that they have the Mystical property, which lets them be fired using ranks in Mysticism + Wis mod, rather than usual ranks in Piloting + Dex mod. However, we appear to be spoiled for high-dex, pilot-y, types in this party, so I don't know that it'd be super helpful.

But, I mean, it doesn't cost us anything, so there's no reason not to! Up to you, really. We have to replace an existing Light weapon with it, so, given the loadout of a T10 Drake, I'd suggest swapping out the light particle beam in the Turret - both do 3d6 dmg, so no change in overall damage potential.

Oh, and yes, 1 boon per slot (except Slotless and Vanity boons, which have no limit.)

There's an opportunity cost for the aeon caster - I can't use Runedrive Rewrite. Our shields are now Heavy Shields 240 (so 10 more to each quadrant).

Kosigan prefers to melee and has all the fun stats of a Con class, but also has 40 speed, so it can be first or second in line depending on what others prefer.

So...is Aerondor/Gunnz around?
If they're not flying - should I just plop Varuthalla into the pilot's seat, to keep things moving? Or, would anyone else like to? With a +19, Varuthalla's not bad in the hotseat, but I'm by no means married to it.

A word of advice - you should be a lot more clear and upfront about that. When you said "Troivayan is undependable and will likely be getting high in his room while aboard a starship" I thought that was just character set dressing, not literal "I will not be participating in starship combat." For that matter, you shouldn't be playing scenarios with the starship tag, if you don't want to play starship combat.

@Varuthalla: Please don't worry about what Troivayan is or isn't doing. Out of character, this battle is a cakewalk (the ship hasn't taken a single point of hull damage) and it's okay to win a game of chess without moving all of your pieces. In character, please feel free to RP your frustration with Troivayan--it's perfectly natural for a vesk (from a militaristic culture) to be frustrated with a druggie slacker like him.

@GM: If you want to give Troivayan a point of Infamy or dock him credits for not participating in the starship combat, I won't object--he probably deserves it!

Mostly agree with Varuthalla here. If you don't want to participate in starship combat, they should not join games with the Starship tag. That's what the tags are there for - to make sure everyone gets to play the type of scenarios they want to.

If it's the character - 2 AcP gets you a hireling that can be a science officer or engineer.

On a PbP, after someone does nothing for a week, I'm starting to think that they aren't actually playing the game (wouldn't be the first time it's happened).

I would love to not worry about what other characters are or aren't doing, but the social contract that cooperative TTRPGs are built on is that your character will participate. I'm not saying you have to be good, but you need to be playing. You can even have the same RP moments: describe how your character is fighting through their inner demons or whatever, to focus on starship combat! Just do something. What you're doing (disengaging from the game and not telling people about it?) is disrespectful to everyone else at the table, pushing the issue out to everyone.

Look, I get it. Having a tortured soul working through trauma (or whatever is happening here) can be a very rewarding character. But, to do that, you need upfront communication, and, most importantly, consent, from the GM and the other players, to have a character that will just be absent at times.

It sounds like Troivayan could be a super interesting character to roleplay - in a home game, with buy-in, where it's discussed in a Session Zero. But it's best to leave him out of Organised Play. (At absolutely minimum, you need to be crystal clear in pre-game discussions, and like I said, avoid the scenarios where he'll have PTSD or whatever it is that's happening here.)

Oh, and Varuthalla is neither vesk, nor from the Veskarium. Maybe at level 1, she would have done what you suggest and be mad, but she's grown and re-evaluated her more militaristic views, particularly through missions on Pulonis. While on one hand I tend to agree with the "avoid starship combat tags if you don't like it" argument... I also note there are very very high level scenarios available for a level 12 to play. Being restricted from playing them just because you don't enjoy the subsystem seems harsh.

That said, just being upfront about it is always good. "[b]I don't like starship combat, please either bot me for the combat[b]" would be good. As suggested, just put in an RP post about quivering in fear as the ship is rocked by near-miss shots. Or the waft of -non damage induced- smoke coming from your room. Once a day or so to keep up the RP side of things.

Given that the starship combat is over, I've stated my enthusiasm to accept any in-character or out-of-character consequences, and the character is level 12 (so unlikely to have many scenarios ahead), the discussion is 99% an abstract one at this point. In other words, I'm content to let it sit and move on.

As frustrating as I understand a maze like this can be, you've stumbled across something you can now vent your frustrations out on in combat!

(and so far while the dead ends and backtracking are annoying and time-wasting {you're still doing okay on it: as this fight begins you've expended ~40 minutes as this fight begins} you have been relatively stealthy by getting into the base quickly and avoiding setting off several loud hazards or traps. Hence you're still catching this set of ysoki by surprise.

Mazes are something that are much quicker on a tabletop than on PBP.

If it changes things for Sefel, don't forget that you can draw a weapon as part of a move action - and, you're hasted too, right, so with one move action, you can draw a weapon and move 60 ft? Just pointing out options :)

I actually have my own question I've never been certain of about Line and Flexible Line weapons. It's not currently relevant here, but thought I'd pose to the group.

Line/Flex Line attacks roll once for attack and damage. But what happens if there are modifiers affecting attacks against one but not all of the affected enemies? Specifically (in my experience) something like Get 'Em

Ex: there are monsters 'red', and 'blue'. Improved Get 'Em is giving +2 to attacks against 'red'. If Navasi shoots a line weapon that would affect both 'red' and 'blue' and rolls a 19 on her attack, would that be a 19 vs the relevent AC of both enemies? Or would it be a 19 vs 'blue's AC, but treated as a 21 vs 'red's?

Ooh, ooh, pick me Teach, I know this one! There's an FAQ about it:
How do abilities like Get ‘em and Stunt and Strike interact with weapons that can affect more than one target (such as weapons with the blast, explode, or line special weapon properties)?
In most cases these abilities will only target one creature, and therefore the attack resolves as though only one creature (the target of your ability) is affected. In the case of the explode weapon property, the attack roll only applies to the attack against the grid intersection, but additional damage can be applied to the creature closest to the targeted intersection (the same creature that would take extra damage if you scored a critical hit). Note that as per the existing FAQ, you must still use the creature with the highest CR to determine the DC of your skill check with trick attack.

So yeah, you apply the relevant ability to only the specific creature it's affecting. In your example, Navasi would roll attack once, but yeah, apply a +2 to the role vs Red - so she'd have the one die roll, but a 21 vs Red and a 19 vs Blue.

Fun fact: this character, Varuthalla, is the reason that that FAQ entry exists in the first place :D I asked the question when it came up while theory-crafting the character build that would become Varuthalla (i.e. using the selective explosions stunt & strike with AoE heavy weapons to avoid hitting allies.) I just got lucky and it happened to be on that magical day in 2020 when Joe Pasini fell into a Spice Trance and answered like, every FAQ ever :D

Yes: unless something catastrophically goes wrong we should be solidly finished here pre-Outpost

Hello, this is an FYI that I'll be away in nature without access to computers this weekend, 2/17-2/18. I will return late Sunday (US/Pacific time) and resume posting. As this is just the weekend, I expect minimal disruption to the games I'm in.

Four inivisible and Gunnz with her cloak. Can one other person sneak really well?

I've already used my t-shirt reroll in case of a 1, but, Varuthalla has pretty good Stealth, and is willing to give it a try!

Assuming that passes muster, and we're okay spending 10 minutes making grenades, Varuthalla's game to try Operation: Cloaking / Invis / Pheromones! Do note that AoN says the pheromone grenades aren't Society Legal, but per the actual AR write up for AA3, they should be. I'll put a stealth roll below in case we go ahead with this, just to keep things moving, but if others in the party object, that's fine. I'm not married to this plan or anything :)

I'd allow this, if the rest of the party is fine with it. Note (unless I'm missing something) this would have Gunnz cloaked from her exploit and Sefel casting four Invisibilitys. It would also take 10 minutes you've spent 45 inside so far, though while V is crafting it the rest of you could so other things or Stamina Rest if you'd like.

Is the party okay with this approach?

Is there no way for Var to sneak through without taking time for the grenade? I'm just noting we will be getting pretty close to the hour mark...

I mean, rooms full of folk staring at screens could easily have folk walk past them without noticing them. Happens to me all the time!
