Crypt of Everflame and Abomination Vaults PbP

Game Master AoW_GM

When the mysterious Gauntlight, an eerie landlocked lighthouse, glows with baleful light, the people of Otari know something terrible is beginning. The town's newest heroes must venture into the ruins around the lighthouse – and delve the dungeon levels far beneath it – to discover the evil the Gauntlight heralds. Hideous monsters, deadly traps, and mysterious ghosts all await the heroes who dare to enter the sprawling megadungeon called the Abomination Vaults!

I am a long-time PF1E GM, looking to move into PF2E (first time) and experience the magic for myself. I am looking for a group of 3 adventurers, who can post at least once per day M-F, who are in search of a dungeon crawl and want to play 2E!

If you're not familiar with AV, this is a megadungeon so if that is not your cup of tea, even though there will be opportunities for rp. Since I have read that the adventure is unforgiving to low level parties, we will be running through a modified Crypt of Everflame 2E scenario to get the party to second level and some fame before tackling the adventure itself.

The game takes place in and around the town of Otari. Your character is encouraged to be from Otari and use a campaign specific background, but doing so is not required.

Classes and Backgrounds: Since this is meant to be an introductory game, please limit Class and Background options to the Core Rulebook. I know there are plenty of splat books and a plethora of character classes, but since this is my first foray into 2E, I will limit the options of CRB and the Common trait, unless you have an interesting backstory for an uncommon item.

Starting equipment = 15 gp.

I have one character already who will be playing in this game (he will be playing a half-orc fighter), and I am looking for a balanced group of THREE more adventurers.

Backgrounds specific to Otari and AV:

Bibliophile
You love few things more than a good book, and as a result, Odd Stories is your favorite shop in Otari. The bookseller Morlibint supplies you with fiction, anthologies, and other delightful reads, and he's always eager to discuss his latest finds with you. You know that imagination is the greatest magic, but a working knowledge of actual magic helps, too.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Intelligence or Charisma, and one is a free ability boost.
You're trained in the Arcana skill, and the Library Lore skill. You gain the Arcane Sense skill feat.

Eldritch Anatomist
You're a trained physician who can ably tend wounds of many kinds. But more than a practitioner, you're a scholar. Some cultures shape flesh to extreme degrees, creating aberrations from humanoid forms. The fleshforges of distant Nex practice this fleshwarping, as do certain subterranean societies you hope to one day study— preferably from a safe and clinical distance.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Intelligence or Wisdom, and one is a free ability boost.
You're trained in the Medicine skill, and the Fleshwarp Lore skill. You gain the Assurance skill feat with Medicine.

Market Runner
Keeleno Lathenar, the proprietor of Otari Market, is a grim and bitter man. A werewolf named Jaul Mezmin mauled his wife, Ayla, to death 30 years ago. Keeleno has never forgotten nor forgiven this attack, and he believes against all odds that Jaul has evaded justice and is alive and well. Running errands for Keeleno around town, you've gotten to know him almost as well as you know Otari. Keeleno's suspicions have rubbed off on you a bit, so you keep a wary eye on other people— particularly around the full moon.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Constitution or Charisma, and one is a free ability boost.
You're trained in the Diplomacy skill, and the Otari Lore skill. You gain the Hobnobber skill feat.

Ruin Delver
You've looked through some of the smaller ruins in the Otari hinterlands but have never quite built up the courage to check out the creepy lighthouse called Gauntlight. You've heard that these ruins are pretty well picked over, and mostly collapsed, but you always planned to some day explore them and perhaps find some bauble left behind from the centuries-old battle where the Roseguard slew an evil sorcerer. You know that the crumbled stone of old ruins has a tendency to shift, so you'd better step lightly if you get the chance to explore Gauntlight.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Dexterity or Intelligence, and one is a free ability boost.
You're trained in the Acrobatics skill, and the Roseguard Lore skill. You gain the Cat Fall skill feat.

Starwatcher
You're one of Wrin Sivinxi's closest confidantes. You've spent many long nights with her under the stars, learning the tales associated with the Cosmic Caravan and how the heavens can predict the future. You know that Wrin has paralyzing claustrophobia; she sees menace in angles and danger in confined spaces, which is why her shop is an all domed canvas that opens to the sky. If Wrin thinks there's trouble, you'll be the first to offer to help.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Constitution or Intelligence, and one is a free ability boost.
You're trained in the Occultism skill, and the Astrology Lore skill. You gain the Dubious Knowledge skill feat.

Witchlight Follower
While in a dismal forest or remote swamp, you caught sight of a string of lights bobbing through the trees. You stepped forward for a closer look, and then still further when the lights retreated a few paces. Then you remembered the rumors. Will-o'-wisps, rushlights, corpse lanterns—whatever they're called—such evil creatures lead people to their doom. With a supreme effort of will, you broke free from the alluring enchantment, and you've resolved to never let the strange lights of remote wildernesses claim you again.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Dexterity or Wisdom, and one is a free ability boost.
You're trained in the Survival skill, and the Wisp Lore skill. You gain the Terrain Expertise skill feat with both swamp terrain and subterranean bodies of water.

Recruitment will remain open for one week or until I get sufficient applications. I will post if the recruitment deadline changes. Any questions, please let me know.

Have wanted to play Abomination Vaults for a while, and with a little modded Crypt of the Everflame (also never played, but hear good things about) to get us there sounds fun. I’m still a nascent player of PF2, only just getting the hang of it (or not as the case may be) and now the Remaster…so I’m trying to get in as much experience with the system as I can. Going to do something a little different this time…

Looking to submit an Elven or Half-Elven Rogue with the Starwatcher background…

Welcome Oceanshield, look forward to the concept.

Horizon Hunters

Not quite sure about background but I'm thinking in a warpriest of Ragathiel

Thank you Ricka. For players unfamiliar with adventure path and Otari, you can access the player's guide at: Link

Ok, OSW applying with Serenllys.

Serenllys has lived in Otari for several years, and mostly keeps to herself - she is on good terms with Tamily at the Fishery, and is known to favor exotic wines, when she can afford them.

Mostly Serenllys is seen in the company of Wrin Sivinxi, and is rumored to occasionally venture to dark and subterranean places on behalf of her close friend in search of curios and trinkets.

Occasionally Sernllys visits the Stone Ring Pond on the northern outskirts of town, usually on clear nights when the moon is gone, all the better to watch the sky and seek out her favorite constellations.

Serenllys is a personable individual however is quick to judge, though she is just as easily apt to change her judgements given more consideration and experience.

Very useful info, I think I should work on my concept a little as it is a bit out of there compared to Otari and it's inhabitants and I don't really feel like being an outsider who just arrived, still I'm aiming at playing a warpriest

Hey all, I'm the half-orc fighter with a kind soul who worships Iomedae. I look forward to gaming with you.

Serenllys, great write-up, you're in, so that's 2 players. Ricka, the warpriest sounds interesting and will wait for the finished product. I am anxious to start the game. :)

If you need an online character generator to simplify the character creation process, I recommended this one: Link to character generator.

I used Pathbuilder for the first time when creating Serenllys. It was helpful just to populate all the fields, then I used Archives of Nethys to cut and paste relevant abilities. Conceivably I could have just used Pathbuilder, but there were different devices at different times. But it makes creating a character seamless.

Radiant Oath

Here's Ricka's character.

Marietta growth in Otari along with her older brother Lenard, both found their calling in Ragathiel and Vildeis respectively and when they where old enough they leave, Lenard was a Paladin and fought bravely in the Crusade at Sarcoris, Marietta however was more of a cleric and saw little action during her years of formation at Lastwall since his brother forbid her of joining the crusade against the demons in Sarcoris until she has proved to be capable.

However, the worldwound was closed, Lenard survived the crusade and went to Lastwall to meet her sister who has become a warpriest, then it everything was put upside down, the Whispering Tyrant destroyed Lastwall, Lenard died Marietta survived somehow but she wasn't ready, her conviction and faith faltered, she ran away in fear...

Time passed, things settled and Marietta found herself back in Otari the shame of cowardice crushing her but the favor of her deity returned, in fact it never abandoned her no even when she committed anathema and ran away, she's ready, soon, this time she won't run again

For the time being as a cleric she has been trying to preach about justice and her deity's teaching in the town, her shameful retreat is no secret however, most people don't blame her but still...

Marietta is a good friend of Vandy and spends much of her time at the temple

I'd like submit Kelri Greenhill, a halfling wizard, for a chance to play in this game. Mechanics can be found on the Kelri Greenhill alias.

Kelri was born and raised in Otari, and was a curious child easily fascinated by stories, especially about magic. This led her to undertake a basic wizard education to learn more about the possibilities of magic. She chooses to worship Shelyn for the stories that inspired her and her belief that magic is also a form of art which can inspire others.

Kelri is still studying magic in Otari and continues to be a frequent customer at Odd Stories often chatting about books or her studies with the owner Morlibint. Aside from there she’s also likely to be found at the Dawnflower Library for their books or the Rowdy Rockfish for a meal and some quiet conversation.

Are there still any slots? I know you mentioned you were looking for 3 people, but in my experience most of the APs are designed for 4, and have heard that Abomination Vaults in particular is pretty lethal. If you are looking for more, then I offer:

Bogrir Shadowstone, dwarven thaumaturge (ruin delver). Bogrir grew up in Otari, and he always loved ancient stories about ancient civilizations. His first adventures came from exploring old ruins in the swamps around Otari, until he stumbled onto his ability to draw on the power of the artifacts he found there.

If you'd like Bogrir to join the group, I'll do a more complete background and a full stat up of the character. Thanks!

Ricka, thank you for the character. Party may need a dedicated healer, but I see that you are more offense-oriented.

Bookworm, thanks for the submission. Arcane helps out a lot.

Azjauthor, you are free to submit before the deadline, but I am limiting classes to CRB so no thaumaturge. Since this is my first crack at 2E, wanted to get some experience under my belt b4 messing with the advanced classes.

Given the lack of applications, I am moving up the deadline: Recruitment ends tomorrow 12/3 at 6:00 PM EST.

Horizon Hunters

Actually I'll do both, I can still prepare heal and I plan on taking versatile font at level 2 to split between heal and harm, furthermore I'll go for the medicine skill feats, I lack an healer pack at the moment however

Crypt of Everflame AND Abomination Vaults??
Definitely interested.

I only just saw this recruitment this morning, but would love to play. That said, I have yet to play any of the 2e stuff, and am not all that familiar with the character creation specifics for 2nd edition (And would have to rush to get up to speed by this afternoon, obviously).

Would you allow me to use one of the iconic characters with some fluff changes? Say, Kyra, the human cleric, just done as a male character with modifications necessary to fit this game?

If not, no harm, no foul. Figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

Sorry, I missed the restriction to Core Rulebook. New concept/application, then:

Kamau, dwarven champion (liberator), grew up a deaf and mute orphan on the streets of Otari. He would often spend his nights in the nearby swamplands, looking up at the stars and embracing the stillness of his surroundings. He gradually came to worship those stars, in the form of the Celestial Caravan, but was specifically drawn - some might even say chosen - to serve as a champion of the Black Butterfly. He has recently decided to prove his devotion by offering his services to protect others as they travel at night.

Ricka, thanks for allaying my concerns.
GM Snarrfflefox, sure you can apply with a modified version of Kyra.
Azjauthor, my concern would be as a deaf and mute, you're not going to be rping much with the party and npcs. If you have a way around that, would love to see the stat up.

Playing out those difficulties would be part of the fun of it. In a text-based situation, it would be easy enough to describe out the reactions and roleplay, so I would think it would actually be easier to play this type of character in this format. In addition, I'd be happy to spend feat slots on Sign Language or Read Lips feats, or you could grant them for free to fit the concept (See Core Rulebook references here)

Treasure Vault has an assistive device, a voicebox, that I could wear to speak in social situations, and I would be able to speak in sign language in Common. And then there are hearing aids, so we could say that my character has those as well. The assistive items are incredibly cheap, so there's no problem with me starting out with them, if you'd allow them. They are listed here. They don't have any mechanical impact, just allow for hearing/speech.

Also, if you want to avoid all of that, I could just go with Desna as my primary deity instead of Black Butterfly, which means the deaf/mute aspect wouldn't be needed.

Very cool, azjauthor, I was unaware of any of those devices. I would like to see the stat up of the character.

Great! Here is my character sheet in the profile, along with a spoiler that outlines the backstory a little more fully.

You know, I think I'm going to withdraw at this point. Today's gotten busier than expected, and you seem to have the bases covered.

Have fun!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Okay, for the first time in my PbP history, everyone who applied was selected! LOL! Congrats to:

Serenllys
Marietta
Kelri
Kamau

Radiant Oath

Wow! Just made some last moment changes, since I won't be getting channel smite until level 4 and use harm as I envision and will grab versatile font at level 2... I'll start with healing Font if that's okay, later on I'll become more offensive
