He seems to be alive, but bleeding badly.

@OSGMO: Can Woy attempt an assist (that is if he is smart enough to realise the sheriff didn't actually murder me...). Should I roll my third stabilise attempt? Happy for you to do it to move things along...

Elder Beholder ‖ Shadowdark Map

Yeah, that's fine - we can just assume you stabilized :)

Woy realizes Ãrwulf is seriously wounded, but still breathing.

Kneeling by the downed shire-reeve Sly stays the big man's hand with a rueful smile;

"Too late big lad. This one's gone..."

(Unless stopped by Woy) He then slips his shorter blade across the lawman's throat...

Elder Beholder ‖ Shadowdark Map

I will leave this one fully up to you guys.

----------

At the church:

All those in the church hear alarmed, panicked screams coming from outside - something along the lines of 'murder', 'sheriff' and 'bandits'.

Human Male Fighter 1 | HP: 0/9 |AC 16 (17 w/shield) |Spd 30ft | Saving Throws: Str +5, Int -1, Wis -2, Dex +4, Con +3, Cha +0

”Gllllggggkkk…*koff* *koff* glggkk. “

At the edge of wavering in and out of consciousness, Ārwulf has a vision. A gaunt man, on a raft at the edge of a mire, fen or other such swamp. A coin. A knife. A release, and then…darkness.

His eyes open.

”Whose…round is it? I need… a drink.” He looks at his trunk, at the blood lying around him. ”Think I can…hold it?

Ārwulf passes out.

Elven Male Ranger 1 | HP: 13/13 |AC: 16 |Spd: 30ft | Fort: 4| Ref: 5| Will: 2

Calhoun looks out the door, then gently closes it while shaking his head.

"I hope that I am wrong, but I think some of our "friends" just killed the sheriff!"

Lewill peers up from his intricate work of cleaning of the grime from the stone, "WHAT?? We need to see what is happening! Our friends might be in trouble!"

No no…, thought the big man. Fair fight an’ then back an’ toe the line, and let the man be. I’d have beaten many to death elsewise.

But Woyzeck was an experienced mercenary, and had stolen more than his fair share of nearly dead man’s boots, and well, he HAD tried to kill his friend after all.

His mental deliberations were slowed by his damaged thinking apparatus… and so definitely slower than the dagger that expertly opened the sheriffs throat up.

He moved to avoid the worst of it, but ended up still wearing some of the foes blood.

Oi…, I was still thinking bout him. He defaulted to mercenary. Oh well, check ‘is stuff. He got anything nice?

Elder Beholder ‖ Shadowdark Map

As his throat is slit, the sheriff's breathing becomes steadily weaker, and the pool of blood becomes larger. Eventually he expires.

You find he is wearing a chain armor, was wielding a sword with a symbol in the pommel you do not immediately recognize, has a dagger on his boot, and a pouch with some coins, and 2 nuggets which seem to be made of gold.

You also notice some people peeking from far away in the distance.

----------

At the church:

Father Almery immediately rushes out to try and understand what might be happening outside, and the children go after him with curiosity.

Sly watches the man expire, his smile rictus as he places the widow's coin under the dead shire-reeves tongue as he mutters an oath:

"Take his shadow. Gift the coin. A transaction complete."

The assassin nods appreciatively as Woy shows keen direction in stripping the still warm body of anything of value.

"We are being watched Big Lad. Best we grab what we've earned and get Ārwulf up. I've seen the type of justice served in these rural sh1te holes before..."

Sly slips the dagger free from the dead man's boot and belts it alongside his blades.

He then moves to heft Ārwulf to his feet;

"In a past life I'd have left you to take the ire of the villagers. Not now... I'm a better man... with a better shadow..."

The assassin smiles to himself.

Darcy follows the father out to see what is happening... or what new opportunities might present themself.

Elder Beholder ‖ Shadowdark Map

@Woy and Sly: What's the plan?

Father Almery moves surprisingly fast for a man his age, and he makes a beeline toward the direction of the shouts.

Further ahead he comes upon a group surrounding a man who is sweating profusely - "They killed them... Outsiders..." - he gasps - "Edge of the village... South... Murderers..." - he continues, trying to regain his breath.

A hushed brouhaha quickly spreads among the gathered men, women and children, as people engage in gossip and debate and further questioning the man.

Father Almery seems nervous, and looks back at Calhoun, Lewill and Darcy - "Ousiders..?" - he mutters to them - "You don't think..?"

Dunno - was mulling the Sheriff's wife widow's place, but too many eyes most likely. Waiting for the others possibly? Lots of ideas - none of which will win hearts and minds of the Grimmsgate folkels... Ārwulf needs healing - wether its coerced or not doesn't matter to Sly. If the good Pater won't give it willingly I've some thoughts on how to convince him.

Elder Beholder ‖ Shadowdark Map

Let me know. I will consider you are with the dead bodies until you have a plan/direction ;)

Actually makes sense to stay with the bodies. Deputy Lucky doesn't know what befell the Sheriff as he bolted before the coup de grace... besides we we're acting in self-defence. Sheriff didn't like that we had questioned his wife... flew off the handle and the big lads cleaned house.

Sly eyes both men as he helps Ārwulf stand;

"Right lads. Let's face the music. We acted in self-defence. Accused the Sheriff of taking coin from Rayne as per his wife's account. He flew into a rage and attacked. You boys dealt with it... at some cost. Make sense?"

He eyes the huge warrior with a hard smile;

"Woy - you understand big lad? The Sheriff. Attacked us. First."

"I pray to the Gods that is not the case Father..."

...but that dark man...I would not put cold-blooded murder past him...

I will allow a moment for Darcy and Calhoun to weigh in if they want. Otherwise I will keep us moving.

Huh? I don’t see this as a very unlikely turn of events. Though it seems Sly is (or was, initially) aware of more than the rest of the party is (was) privy to, for (some of us) us to want to…reckon with a corrupt sheriff seems just about par for any course of old school DnD. I’m actually not following the surprise, or humor!

Ah if Ārwulf is still ko'd then let's leave him on the ground - safer and looks more sympathetic.

Sly looks down at his fallen comrade with mock concern as the clamor of a village approaches...

Elder Beholder ‖ Shadowdark Map

"Take me to the wounded" - Father Almery's tone becomes more urgent - "Maybe there is still something which can be done..." - and thus the group of gathered villagers ambles on, following the distraught deputy.

Elder Beholder ‖ Shadowdark Map

Eventually they manage to find the scene of the vicious fight - many people stop short, their eyes open wide at the violence and fallen combatants - they seem hesitant in what to do.

"There they are, the murderers!" - the deputy shouts - "They simply attacked us when we tried to run them out of the village for loitering and vagabondry!"

But not Father Almery - he rushes ahead to check the wounded, but not without a sidelong glance to evaluate if Woy and Sly present some danger - "Please move aside, I want to try and help" - he approaches the sheriff first, examining his vital signs.

And so the group is reunited! :D

Sly pays the holy man equally no heed as he tends to the dead sheriff. Instead the assassin affixes his hard gaze upon the still living deputy;

"Murderers you say? We defended ourselves after exposing the Shire-Reeve's corruption! No we are no murderers... Were we so, you would not be breathing to bleat your lies... Were we so you would be endangering yourself with such open accusations... And as murderers we would be compelled to find you and butcher you in your home..."

His rictus smile flashes momentarily. before faux stoicism is returned.

"... but we are not such men... Lucky for you."

Elder Beholder ‖ Shadowdark Map

”Lies!” - the deputy retorts, after swallowing hard - ”It was you who attacked us, while we were escorting…”

”This man’s throat has been slit open…” - Father Almery’s voice interrupts the deputy, bringing a deadly silence all about.

He stares at Woy and Sly questioningly, his hands covered in blood.

Darcy feels that this is the most exciting thing that has happened in months. She helps herself to some food from the Priests cupboards and climb onto the roof to get a good view of what's going on.

Darcy, if you are staying in the chapel, you will be too far to witness any of the ‘action’, even from the roof. You are free to stay of course. The place is deserted - it seems like the kids left with everyone else.

Darcy followed the priest out earlier. If there isn't a roof to get on, or a tree to climb, she'll try to find somewhere to watch the drama unfold. If there were no snacks available to snatch on the way out she'll skip that part.

Lewill's face pales at the sight of all the blood here, and when Father Almery pronounces his verdict his eyes narrow to the newcomer and unconsciously clenches his fists as he waits for the assassin to defend himself further.

”Klg…gllggg….pltsh…blkplb… gurgles Ārwulf quietly on the ground.

Lost again in unconsciousness, Ārwulf’s reverie shifts. A blind angel bearing a set of rusty scales shouts to the heavens, the sky populated by boil-ridden and pustule-skinned hands all pointing down accusingly. Meanwhile, a pool of red fluid begins to rise from gaping holes in the ground to cover the land, and pork pies grow wings and take flight, honking wildly.

Sly keeps his cold stare affixed on the Deputy;

"Lies eh? Escorting us for what was it? Vagabonding and loitering... Nothing to do with the good sheriff's dealings eh?"

He pauses, sneering smile growing wider;

"His throat was indeed opened. He felled our friend... We fought. Pater - was it not you who said Dreng was a brute, who cowed his wife and was unsavoury? He got his. I cut his throat and his shadow both: Umbra mortis nihil timet malum."

Elder Beholder ‖ Shadowdark Map

Sly's words shatter the silence, and send ripples through the gathered villagers - voices start to rise, and tempers apparently also.

"Did he just confess? He should hang"
"Outsiders are always trouble..."
"Told you the crows were a portent"
"Who will be sheriff now?"

Are some of the hushed comments.

Almery's voice makes itself heard trembling, among the others - "Regardless of this man's sins, who are you to pass judgement on others... With murder?" - he stood up, staring at Sly - "To make yourself judge and executioner by your own laws?"

You start hearing the glint of metal, and see some pitchforks and shovels being wielded. The deputy still held his blade.

"You need to answer by your crime" - the Father stated flatly, looking also at Woy - "You need to lay down your weapons, allow yourselves to be taken into custody, and face the consequences of your actions"

Shaking his shock away, he goes to look over the wounded deputy and Ārwulf - "And stop this madness now, before anyone else gets hurt"

I think we need more people to weigh in at this moment. I will give time for it.

Darcy sure, you can be up a tree, munching on some snacks and watching it all unfold :)

Not sure that even if any of the non-murderhobos wanted to speak up for us (they all seem like morally…clean….individuals and mostly appalled by our Operation Squirrel), doing so would likely make them complicit. I clearly don’t think we have much party…cohesion here! So I imagine it will be a long drop from a short rope for the three amigos…never could stomach priests and their ability to be…unfailingly pragmatic, and when it suits them, honest.

And clearly nothing our group was doing with the stone (or generally) seems to the clergyman to be of any sort of import worth standing up for, and I’m sure to him, murder (either apparent or inferred) is fairly abhorrent. I don’t blame Almery. He has the whole town’s immortal soul to think of, and the town’s ongoing stability in the face of losing its sheriff…

Sly's smirk widens at the priests words;

"Lay down our arms? I think not. Turn ourselves over to your provincial sh1tehole justice? You have no Shire-Reeve... The deputy there is complicate in Dreng's corruption, so whose justice? I'll pass... As for who I am to take the life of another... Lets just say we all our callings Pater. Some guide the flock. Others cull the wolves."

The assassin pauses, the nods towards the downed Ārwulf;

"Tend to him and I'll honour your request. I want his voice heard in this clamour of the witless and worthy..."

He rests his hands upon the pommel of his belted daggers.

"Have you no ounce of compassion in your veins, or does only ice water flow there? What of the Sherrif's...wi- uhh family?" Lewill retorts, "I don't see your actions as warranted or even necessary Assassin!" His voice rises again, "Perhaps you should explain your...reasoning to Yanissa...or did you forget what the Sherrif's wifes name is?"

Yes those who kill without remorse do forget minor details like that! Poor Yanissa, maybe I should talk with her first...

Glancing back over to Father, "Please do tend to Arwulf here. It is my belief that man means good, just was duped here."

Woyzeck knows the baying of crowds… and he knows they aren’t good.

He demeanour is clearly only of disturbance. He is no gentle giant however. Where some village idiot would burst into tears or start curling up, he only hears the rushing of blood.

But he remembers one thing… because he was part of it once… he thinks… maybe… He struggled with hazy memories.

Trial by combat, he says simply. The gods will decide this one by trial by combat.

Elder Beholder ‖ Shadowdark Map

"I am not sure what you are talking about young man" - Father Almery frowns - "There is to be no more fighting, and definitely not any trial by combat" - he added - "You are to be apprehended, and remain in custody until we have managed to reach out to the authorities in Troye"

At the mention of the widow, Sly smirks and shrugs;

"By all means go inform the good Widow she is free of her husbands shackles. I am sure she will be beside herself with grief... Oh and while you're at it give her back the coin that sits under that dead basterd's tongue. Tell her it was money well spent."

When Woy suggests trial by combat, the assassin's rictus expression widens;

"Trial by combat is a justified means to ascertain guilt or innocence. Especially where the law is no longer... able or willing to be enforced. I've seen nobles in civilised places like Troye settle judicial disputes betwixt champions. In my line of business it pays to know what's what in such matters."

As he speaks his hands remain gently poised o'er pommel of dirk and shortblade. His eyes back to the surviving deputy when he says willing.
