Ultima uses her magic to shock the Green Kobold.
The green Kobold avoids part of the zapp, but it’s still enough of a jolt to kill him.

With the three scout Kobolds dead the way is clear for Celosia, Tain and Goxormas to act.

”Halt! No need to die!” he yells in the Common tongue, shield raised ready to bash it if tries to move past him.

Goxomas will move behind the remaining Kobold

Then, Goxomas will get in the way of the Kobold.

Celosia scurries forward and zaps the lone remaining Kobold. He dodges some of the damage but still gets zzorched.

Tain raises his shield and moves up and behind the Purple Kobold, calling for him to surrender.

Goxomas moves forward to flank the Purple and steps into a Spike Trap set by the Kobold!
The catfolk’s dancing does interfere with the Kobold’s defense as the monk swiftly strikes with a flurry of blows hitting the purple Kobold once. (Goxomas please make a basic Reflex save vs DC17 or take 7 damage)

The Kobold sneers at Tain in draconic and makes a Hurried Retreat from the fighter (Does create Attack Opportunity). The Kobold draws and throws a spear at Tain for blocking his retreat. The spear hits the fighter despite his raised shield.
(Tain you can use your reaction to take AoO or use Shield block to negate the damage.)

Celosia peeks around the corner and hits the kobold once again with lightning.

Ultima moves forward readying her sling.

Goxomas evades some of the trap damage. He dances up the kobold and unsuccessfully strikes at the foe.

Celosia sends an electric arc at the kobold. The purple foe takes partial damage from the arc and is still going strong being more hardy they the average kobold.

Angered by the spear wound and finally realising the kobold isn’t going to cease being aggressive, Tain tries to bring it down. Then quickly remembers defend on the off-chance the little beast survives…

The Purple Kobold growls in frustration as he draws a shortsword and stabs at the heroes. The first strike hits Mikhail and the second strike misses Tain.

Tain slays the Purple Kobold with a mighty blow!

Combat Over

Searching the bodies you find more dried fish, four sets of small leather armor, and a dozen spears. In addition, you find a shortsword, a spike trap, and an eggshell necklace on the leader.

The necklace worn by the kobold trap-master is a special necklace: a simple copper chain and a cracked piece of a large eggshell. The shell is ivory in color, but it has strange green veins running through it. This piece is only about 3 inches across, but the egg it came from must have been at least 2 feet wide.

There is no other treasure in the room, but there’s another exit a spiral staircase in the back of the room descending even deeper into the earth.

This is where part 1 ends and part 2 begins. The adventure suggests this is a good time to report back to Tamily Tanderveil about what you’ve found, sell any treasure you found, purchase additional gear, and rest up or you can continue to press on after a round of healing.

"I think we'd better go back and report. This is a strange place."

"Let's go back. Report. Then, we can continue to investigate."

Goxomas pauses, then says, "And, get something to drink. I'm almost out."

Tain nods at Perrik’s statement, the. smiles as the amurrun keeps things…real. Though Tain is somewhat personally gratified at the final slaying of the kobold, he is equally perturbed by the senseless killing.

What in all the hells is going on down here. This is more than just…crocodiles.

He nods again.

”I guess I could use a drink.”

As the group prepares to head back, Mikhail raises a prayer to Pharasma and casts heal on the group.

Celosia follows the group gratefully back upstairs, hoping to spend some time in the sun.

She will examine the egg shelled necklace,

The group decides it is best to report back and start out fresh the next day.

Goxomas gets something to drink and a refill for his jugs of wine. Tamily provides free drinks as she eagerly listens to the strange tales of what the heroes found below.

Tain feels perturbed by having to kill the kobolds and seeks a drink.

Hikhail provides healing to the group with a bit of prayer to Pharasma.

Celosia also returns to the surface spending some time in the sun.

Ultima examines the Eggshell necklace but cannot determine what creature it could belong to.

No one in town can identify what sort of creature would lay such a massive egg, although Tamily speculates that it might have come from a giant turtle or another reptile. The heroes may yet discover what laid this strange egg later in the dungeon.

Reporting to Tamily Tanderveil about the scaly creatures creeping around the caverns, she appears shaken by the story of what you found underneath her fishery, ” Implore you to press on and put an end to this menace. There is no telling what they are planning down there, but it’s not good.”

” The creatures are kobolds, small reptilian humanoids related to dragons who live in small tribes and have a fondness for traps. The amount of fish that has gone missing is far greater than what could have been eaten by a handful of kobolds. I’m worried that there’s something far hungrier beneath the city!”

Tamily pulls two potions out from under the bar and hands them to the group ” Here are two healing potions I keep in case of emergency please take them sounds like you may need them.”

Tain frowns on hearing the relationship between kobolds and dragons, and puts their relationship together with the egg necklace and comes up with….

”Fish!?! Are there any dragons that eat fish? I’m sure I was wrong about the crocodiles, but c-could there be a fish-eating dragon down there?”

Tamily pales at the mention of dragons, " I hear dragons can eat just about anything. Where would the Kobolds get a dragon egg from? It's got to be something else."

The cleric takes the speculation in stride. "Honestly, if there's a dragon down there and the kobolds want it to attack Otari, we're for my Lady anyway. I would rather meet Her having done all I could for the people here, Tain...wouldn't you?"

Tain nods along until Perrik seems to question his valor.

”I wasn’t suggesting anything like shying away from whatever is below. And anyway…if it hatched recently, which we don’t know that it didn’t, it might be a small dragon.”

He looks again at Perrik unevenly, both trying not to cause not take further offence.

”Which would still require quite the battle to…overcome. Especially if it is surrounded by kobolds.”

A small voice pipes up from behind everyone. "We...could try to make friends instead. Maybe? I would rather not hurt a dragon if we don't have to."

"That would also work, but we'd need to know what the kobolds want. That means listening to them, and they didn't seem to want to talk last time we crossed paths."

Tain nods again, then shakes his head emphatically.

”I’m all for not killing Celosia, but you saw what happened when I tried to take the less death-to-kobolds path. My body grew a spear. Maybe we need an expert on kobolds…”

When Tain tried to reason with the Kobolds, It was obvious the Kobolds didn’t understand common. They only spoke in Draconic.

Tain being a local knows two people in Otari who he would consider sages.

At ODD STORIES there is the wizard Morlibint who specializes in fanciful fiction, but he and his husband also sell textbooks, teaching tools, and scrolls of wizard spells. Morlibint is incredibly well-read and can help the heroes decipher tomes in ancient or unusual languages they might encounter in their adventures.

Also, the head priestess of Otari’s largest temple, the Dawnflower Library, is a chatty woman named Vandy Banderdash. Always eager to greet newcomers, regardless of their faith or vocation, Vandy has a surprising knack for recommending the perfect bit of reading to people she’s only just met.

Ok, if it was obvious the kobolds only spoke Draconic, Tain will attend Odd Stories, and ask Morlibint if he knows any Draconic, and will try to learn some phrases such as “My friend here likes soup” (“We are not your enemies”) and “I think your nose is on backwards” (“Take us to your leader”) or similar.

She will spend her time gathering herbs and other things to make poultices to have ready to heal. She will be ready when the group is.

(Game wise: I let Tain chose an exploration task where he has a phrases which he is repeating over and over to himself ready to call out at the start of an encounter.)

Tain smiles a little sheepishly.

”Ah…thanks Morlibint. And let me know if you get any new…nautically themed…books.”

Are the rest of the partymembers ok with Tain spending 2gp on the book? According to the loot, if we sell everything we get @17 gold each. Tain will spend out of his own share if necessary. Heading to the Discussion thread to talk loot more generally…

Rested and reequipped, the heroes make their way back down into the darkness taking up the exploration from where they left off.

The stairs spiral down deep into the earth before ending in a chamber that looks like it’s been prepared specifically to defend against intruders. On one side of the room, a table has been turned on its side to provide cover, while on the other, crates and barrels have been piled up to create a second barrier.

The party heads down the stairs to the lower level, but everyone stops on the staircase, having spotted a kobold hiding behind the barricades.

Combat has not started yet. If Tain bought the translation book he could try a phrase and diplomacy.

Mechanically, the kobolds are Hidden to everyone. This means they can be targeted, but with a DC 11 flat check because their exact location isn't known.

The tables and barrels can be crossed, but their squares are difficult terrain.

”Uh, thanks Goxomas! But I can pay for it.” Tain purchases the book and spends every free moment trying out his Draconic phrases.

Now…
Tain almost stumbles down the stairs in his haste to bring the translation book to bear. He doesn’t really need it for this phrase, but it’s there as a back up. He tries his best with the rough, sibilant tongue.

”Nazh klak tor vak. Vee kass pahr!” ”Stay your weapon. We come to talk.”

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Oh well. Probably said “Your father is a cesspit. Can we smell farts.”

Upon detecting the hiding Kobold, Tain calls out in draconic ”Nazh klak tor vak. Vee kass pahr!”

The hidden kobold hisses angrily and yells ” Vaz Saks Zhan Rhap Eev!”.

Using the book Tain translates what the kobold said ” Would you like fries with that?” he thinks diplomacy went poorly.

The red Kobold that spoke pops up from the table and fires a crossbow hitting Tain with a sneaky shot. He then reloads and fires again missing the fighter.

Another Kobold pops up from behind the barrels and fires two shots at Tain, but both miss the fighter.

Tain cries out in pain. He see Gox and Mik dealing with the closer creature, and hustles to deal with the second. He mostly hits wood.

Mikhail moves in flanking the foe with Gox he stabs the same kobold with his dagger.

Celosia creeps forward and shocks the two kobolds with an electric arc. Red takes a full zap while blue only takes half the jolt.

Tain moves in to threaten the blue kobold. Taking a swipe he misses.
