Question about the equipment: do you allow combining items/powers i.e. if I want to have gloves of dexterity and still have Gloves of reconnaissance is it possible?

I have changed the character, I lost deflection bonus and I will kindly ask of others to leave to me natural armor amulet :(

You can have ring of fire resistance and healing potions and money

(I'm not 100% set on this if you need the amulet or are willing to trade it)

I lost a point of resistance (cloak +1 instead of +2), and deflection (I wanted to keep maximally what I had, but headband +2 costs 4000 by itself.

I also had to increase the cost of weapons and armor.
I dropped few "flavor" alchemy items and shining wayfarer (replaced with vanilla version - saved 1500 right there)

Still, it seems auto progression gets you more in value (but obviously, you cannot chose to have weapon +3 (for example) instead of two or three other items)

I'm fine with gloves of dex + recon. The official rules are probably around somewhere, but let's say just add 500 gp to the overall price. Adding yet another would be an additional 2000, then 4000, 8000, etc.

Official rules are full cost of item 1 + 150% of item 2.

So 4000 + 2000 ends up being 7000, because you get 4 + (150% of 2 = 3) = 7k.

In case you're interested for the future. ;)


Appreciated! I also acknowledge I'm not the best at keeping us exactly "wealth by level" when it comes to treasure (maybe you guys wil find a pinata full of gold for no reason!), so I'm happy to keep the discount. :)

My sense motive roll becomes relevant here - it is a skill unlock that gives me bonus to init. since it is only 1 point between Aisling and the unknown elem, Aisling might move before entanglement starts and maybe get him/pull him out.

DC was 11+bluff mod of the target or DC 15 whichever is higher, I rolled 27

Assuming no bluff, this would give me +3 to init, +1 for succeeding on the check and +1 per 5 above (20+ and 25+)

You know, somehow, when I think elen, it always comes as elem from elemental in my mind. I even wrote elem in one post I think.

I have arcana +3, but it is not trained - is it same as in DnD 3.5 where you cannot roll for skills above DC 10 withougt being trained?

We can move on from my side...


I don't know if its official, but I definitely play it as "only people trained in a skill should know the tough stuff". It breaks my belief when a barbarian rolls a nat 20 randomly and starts babbling about arcane mysteries when he's barely literate :)


Announcement! We are finally meeting the other Volcano's Land table, as both tables have had player attrition over the last few months.

I will be using this table, because Benedetto's avatar is my DM avatar at the other table -- that would get confusing.

I am totally open to how you introduce yourselves ("a blast of ice goes over your shoulder -- what manner of creature are you?!"), just no straight up PvP. The Avengers might have some good-natured tension now and then, but we are all on the same team :)

Please say hello in Discussion, and then describe/introduce yourselves in Gameplay! You are meeting in the twisting halls of the Temple, where there is a narrow hall group 1 came from, a trap--filled hall group 2 came from, and a third, wider hall that leads to the unknown.

We have abundance of monks and rogues it seems. :) No traps are beyond us...but simple ooze...another story.

More Rogues and Monks means more flanking partners! I won't need to depend a much on creating flat-footed on my own.


Qizzvultz (is) Qizzvultz. Mycos (use) no verbs, but we (shift) our fungus-bodies into shapes to (make) verbs.


One last point of business --- most of the Beyond the City of Light have been playing nearly a year, so I'd like Benedetto, River, and Aisling to all go to level 10. Ideally, take the weekend to review the changes.

Two things I often forget: Levels and treasure. I try to make levels milestone in nature, but also I never want an entire year of RL time to go by with no levels gained :0

When it comes to treasure, I will tell you no one hordes things quite like the Temple :) I'm actually interested to see what happens down here.

Here's a list of major milestones we've had:

--Waking up in drifts of snow outside the city of Light, surprised to be alive after Moon's takeover

--Benedetto becoming a Knight of the Phoenix

--River found Gull, the boy she remembers she does not remember

--Defeating a horde of mephits and an inquisitor

--Taking shelter against Sky's Tears

--Surviving the time-warping presence of Moon fleeing across the dead Sky upon His defeat in Hearth, now missing his Smile, a scarred circle, vengeful and bloodied

--And made it to Hearth.


And Aisling is loved by Sky and Their many aspects.


I amuse myself with the Chapter and Book names, it also helps to organize the Campaign Diaries.

Only recently did I realize that my campaigns have spanned about two large arcs so far. I would call the complete arcs:

Novel 1: Volcano
(first rise of the Blessed and the Phoenix; Cauldron Lady rejected)
(the Smiler, defilement of the Temple; a Quiet Elder in Hearth)

Novel 2: Moon
(sylph madness, the fall of the city of Light)
(Moon attacks Hearth, but is repelled)
(Fey of the Gem Court ally with Moon)
(The Library of Reality in danger; drakes and dragons return to the world)

Novel 3: Sun
(humans, a race with no godly marks upon them, have returned to the world)
(the Tribe of Peace)
(beginning now as all these threads come together)


and I agree withy Aisling - meeting new memebers is fun, but giving River the weekend to catch up is only fair. I'll post early evening on Monday.

Can I use the Expanded Defense Wild Talent to get Shroud of Water?

Expanded Defense:
Element universal; Type utility (Su); Level 4; Burn —
Choose an element you selected with expanded element. You gain that element’s defense wild talent. You can take this wild talent multiple times, choosing a different element each time.

I don't have expanded element, but I also never got the water defensive wild talent which they assume you will get at level 2, so thought it was worth asking? But before that I should probably check can I even use the talent? Technically monks can't use shields or armor but shroud of water isn't explicitly either of them - it "functions as" instead.

Shroud of Water:
Element water; Type defense (Su); Level —; Burn 0
You surround yourself with a shroud of water, ice, or both that protects you from harm. The shroud can either cover your body, functioning as armor, or float around you and block attacks, functioning as a shield. It grants either a +4 armor bonus to AC or a +2 shield bonus to AC, and you can change the type of bonus as a standard action. This bonus increases by 1 for every 4 kineticist levels you possess beyond 2nd. By accepting 1 point of burn, you can increase the bonus by 1 until the next time your burn is removed. You can increase the bonus multiple times in this way, but it can’t be increased by more than 50% of its starting value. When you change the shroud to grant a shield bonus, any bonus in excess of this limit doesn’t apply, but it remains if you change the shroud’s bonus type again. Whenever you accept burn while using a water wild talent, the water coalescing around you allows your shroud to grant both the armor bonus and the shield bonus for 1 round. You can dismiss or restore this effect as an immediate action.

Let me know either way. If not can I retrain my 8th level talent into Kinetic Blade so that I can take Kinetic Whip at 10th and hit people with water tendrils?

I like the way this combat is running - everyone seems comfortable writing their plan, and I can bring the pieces together in a round summary when everyone has posted. We still need to see Aisling's post, and that will likely help Benedetto get flanking, but even then I doubt Ibinu will be put down before he gets to cast his nasty spell.

Hope to see everyone post today or tomorrow - my usual rule is to bot after ~24 hrs per round, but I'll hold off on posting until Sunday night since it's the weekend.

Thanks for double checking my math -- I put 20 when I think I meant 27 for you. He also got 5 bleed and all the - AC, which I was going to post this round.

I think that will make it right-- double check, because I want to make sure I get it right (lots of moving parts of characters)


Man I mesed up for Benedetto too. Ibinu is a lot worse off than I thought. He's almost down. All sneak attack was valid, I just messed up my counting. Glad I posted what I thought the totals were.

How does this reincarnation affect our loot? He got new chance at life. He can get whatever we replace (i.e. ring of protection +1 or +2 stat item)

That said, you guys obviously have history with him. And you're human so I'll start with the story about that.

If we split the loot:

I suspect, but do not know for sure, that it'll be okay.

1. These sorts of oaths tend to be 'until death'.
2. The spear that bound him is destroyed.
3. He showed signs of being mentally conflicted.
4. Opræterius can break elemental connections, potentially including bondage to the Cauldron Lady.
5. DM declared the CauldronSlave is free.

If it's not okay, we can just bonk him again. :D


This discussion is fascinating, both Discussion and Gameplay. Super happy we brought this group together.

I promise we will keep pursuing both tables' interests :) This chapter is finishing the Temple, and I believe all our threads related to Moon and Light, etc, will be next.
