Thorn Goldenoak |
Hey GM, thanks for having me at your table!
I played the menace once, with character created using the 'simplified' rules and as a result I did not like it that much (mostly due to the rules).
The current PC is gunslinger with Way of the Vanguard. If possible I would like to go with Dwarven Scattergun but the scatter is something that makes me sceptical, I would see how our team composition looks. And if others are fine to be frequently sprayed with 'splash'.
Alternatively it seems that Arquebus is for the most part better option. It swaps scatter 10 ft for Fatal 12 and longer range :| And as a result does not required dwarven feat. But those are technicalities.
I do plan to give Thorn reinforced stock for melee, and sufficient amount of HP to not fall from one hit.
Skill wise he brings Athletics, Nature, Survival +5. Stealth, Thievery +6.
No social skills whatsoever, we will see how I find playing him.
It seems that Treasure Vault brought alchemical ammunition, bane ammunition and elemental ammunition. If we would allow for content from that book, I would gladly use it, if not than no biggie, I can go for 1 bomb ;)
EbonFist |
I haven't made it yet, but I'm debating between creating a champion of Cayden Callean (and learn how to spell that) or playing my goblin cleric of Sarenrae (which I have made.)
EbonFist |
When are we starting and has anyone not checked in? I'm leaning toward my goblin cleric but if we don't have a frontliner, I'll make my champion. I just need to know when I need to start working on him.

Hey, I think some are ;)
- We have Tyranius with Alchemist/bomber (INT PC)
- we have Meadow + Silence Ranger (Dex)
- RxGus jamming on Thaumaturge (Cha PC, from what i saw they can hold the frontline, but I guess there are different builds)
- Myself on Thorn: Gunslinger (way of the vanguard), I am building him as a frontline (as much as gunslinger can be a frontline).
We have 1 open seat, and yourself EbonFist. I think we would be fine with both cleric and champion, so pick one that you prefer.
And by the way, hey @RxGus, it is good to see you again. I think we play with each other on another WaterySoup table ;)
Kzem |
Meet Kzem- an Orc Thaumaturge!
He will be close to frontliner- he will hit for decent damage and will be able to create his own flanks. In PFS, he can survive as a primary damage dealer. I would be a whole lot more worried about him being a the primary front in an AP.

I'm fine with it as long as it's Common or Uncommon, and as long as you know that I don't plan on owning the book during this adventure, so I'll be relying on you to know the items.

Mehhh ... I'm not that kind of GM.
Play the characters you want to play, I'll modify the encounters to match the party (a luxury afforded to me by Adventure Mode).
If nobody wants to be a healer, the magical healing rabbit will run through the room after every encounter, pooping out healing potions. Because, if you were unaware, that's how healing potions are made. :D
Kzem |
Certainly not suggesting that the GM would be the issue- I find that PFS is written more around a mix blend party (things not being optimized), where as APs don't tend to pull punches because they assume well balanced parties.
I think most of my APs have really needed a someone to soak up damage because of how central combat is to most story lines.
My comment was more about allowing others to not feel pressure to *have to* choose a full melee.
Thorn Goldenoak |
I think there is plenty of room for any adjustments, if we go with the team as is, we would have Thorn and Kzem at the frontline. None of them is perfectly suited for that task, but they are not bad either.
At the same time none of our team members are particularly squishy, Meadow will have decent AC and HP, Buzz decent AC and low HP :) So Buzz is squishy :D No matter what EbonFist would come up with
If we don't have a heal, we can rely on other forms of healing, I could go for Natural Medicine for Thorn to have treat wounds + potions, which would solve some of our needs ;)
The rabbit is a good backup thou
Grimmylow Grunderbuff |
I think I'll go ahead and go with this guy. He's no frontliner but he can take a hit. He's got some damaging spells and plenty of healing.
Although the Champion is buzzing around my head so if I get a chance I'll probably end up making him.
Meadow the Archer |
I've made an alias for Meadow and Silence. I'll fill in all the relevant stats and headers this evening.
@Buzz Spriteyear--Meadow's backstory heavily involves a group of sprites located deep in the Immenwood that raised her from a toddler. Would you like to be included in their number and have some history with Meadow or would you prefer to hail from somewhere else? Even if you're not from that particular group they could still have had some contact in the past if your character has spent any time deep in the Immenwood.
GM Watery Soup |
Aight, I see five PCs. Buzz, if you could put basic info in your header, it would be appreciated, and if one of those pieces of information would be your character's pronouns, it would be helpful. :)
I'm not 100% sure how Hero Points are supposed to work for Adventure Mode, but in the absence of any firm guidance to the contrary, I'll declare everyone starts with one and GM glyphs can be handed out, as with a regular PFS scenario. Plus campaign coins and whatnot, same as a Scenario.
GM Watery Soup |
... and I forgot that the PbP overlords run the world from their base in Grenwich. I thought I had all day today to prep. Sorry.
Glyphs are GM glyphs, 1st at 10 games GMed, 2nd at 30 games GMed, 3rd at 60 games GMed, 4th at 100 games GMed. You get to hand out an extra Hero Point at the beginning of a game. Coins are something super special for service to the overlords - Venture Agent stuff, I think. Most of the people I've seen with them have been in charge of stuff.

The stairs leading into the basement of the Otari Fishery creak with age as the group makes its way downstairs to find the beast that has been eating all the fish. In the center of the room, between stone pillars holding up the fishery overhead, are barrels filled with salted fish. Two of these barrels have been smashed open, spilling their contents on the floor. In the east wall is a large hole, opening into darkness.
Tamily Tanderveil was thrilled when you agreed to help her with this simple task, but as you make your way downstairs, you can’t help but wonder if this might be a lot more adventure than you bargained for.
Tactical map is on Slide 3, overview is on Slide 4. Note that north is to the right. Let me know what your character is doing, and place an icon in an appropriate square.
I can't find a link to the slides.
GM Watery Soup |
It's at the top of the campaign, but, also, I'm putting it in my tagline.
Grimmylow Grunderbuff |
Greetings fellow sapients. I am going out of town on vacation starting tomorrow and not returning until Monday night. I likely won't read the forums in that time and even more likely won't post, but will try to catch up on everything by Tuesday. If you are in multiple games with me, prepare to read this portion of this message multiple times...
In the current combat, Grimmylow will cast Forbidding Ward on the person most injured and then sustain it while casting Daze on the rats.
His Spell DC is 16 and his Spellcasting modifier is +3.
Kzem |
Looking at the yellow rat, Kzem attempts to better understand its nature and its fears.E.L. vs Standard DC Creature Level: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23 Sensing its deep uneasiness, leaves the falcon's talon attached to his shield boss.
Striding forward, he finds himself in a flanking position to support with Silence, before striking at the flat footed rat with his talon'ed shield.
Shield Boss: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 Damage (b): 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 + either highest weakness, or weakness of 2 (if EL wasn't a critical failure)
◆ E.V.
◆ Stride
◆ Strike
Thorn Goldenoak |
Sorry I should have been more explicit, way of vanguard reload:
Clear a path basically allows you to shove without a map:
'If your last action was a ranged Strike with the weapon, use the same multiple attack penalty as that Strike for the Shove; the Shove still counts toward your multiple attack penalty on further attacks as normal.'
So you shoot, you shove and reloads and then have an action to do something else as 3rd action is on full map, but shoot + shove are not. But in here it made no difference

Silence the Egotistical Owl |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Silence's Spider trivia:
"Ugh it's awful. Look at it squiggle it's mouth bits."
A spider's mouth parts are different from an insect's. Instead of mandibles capable of chewing, spiders have fang-tipped jaws called chelicerae. With these, they pierce their prey and inject a venomous fluid that immobilizes it.

GM- I will gladly take that readying of Exploit Vulnerability, but my understanding is that there is a difference between “mortal weakness” and “personal antithesis”
Mortal Weakness After identifying a creature's weakness, you use a thematically resonant bit of esoterica to attune your attacks to your discovery. Your unarmed and weapon Strikes activate the highest weakness you discovered with Exploit Vulnerability, even though the damage type your weapon deals doesn't change. This damage affects the target of your Exploit Vulnerability, as well as any other creatures of the exact same type, but not other creatures with the same weakness. For example, when fighting a pack of werewolves you might use silver shavings or crushed moonstone to deal damage that applies their weakness to silver to your attacks against any of the werewolves, but you wouldn't apply this damage to any other monsters with a weakness to silver.
Personal Antithesis You improvise a custom weakness on a creature by forcefully presenting and empowering a piece of esoterica that repels it on an individual level; for instance, against a tyrant, you might procure a broken chain that once held a captive. This causes the target creature, and only the target creature, to gain a weakness against your unarmed and weapon Strikes equal to 2 + half your level.
My take:
If I pass (succeed or critically succeed) an EL check and they have a weakness, I can use exploit vulnerability against the highest weakness of that creature, and all others of the same type.
If I fail (but not critically fail) my EL check, or they don’t have a weakness- I can use my personal antithesis (2+ 1/2 level), but that only applies to a single creature, regardless of if they are the same type or not.
GM Watery Soup |
Your Round 1 EL was a success, so it ahould be MW.
Kzem |
Ok! I assumed mortal weakness only applied if the creature actually had a weakness to apply.
I’ll take the good news!

I don't know the thaumaturge very well, I've played 0, played with 0, and GMed for ... you. That's it. You're my guinea pig.
Upon re-re-reading it, I think you're right - you get mortal weakness only if they have one.
Does anyone else who knows thaumaturge better have any insights?
Kzem |
This is my first time as well. Here are the two best references I have found. My plain reading of the rule matches your re-re-reading. Here are a couple of references that I have used to come to this conclusion.
#1: a feat that explicitly states that Personal Antithesis applies to other creatures
#2: A paizo rules thread
There is a feat that addresses this:
Sympathetic Vulnerabilities
Here is the best thread I have seen on it:
Paizo rules question
Meadow the Archer |
I only GMed a couple of scenarios for a tharmaturge. I just asked him what his stuff meant and trusted him to have it right. A couple of times I asked for the name of an ability and looked it up real quick on Nethys.

I played one in beta testing, and gm'ed for one or two. Overall I think you are on the right track
Success You recall an important fact about the creature, learning its highest weakness (or one of its highest weaknesses, if it has multiple with the same value) but not its other weaknesses, resistances, or immunities. You can exploit either the creature's mortal weakness or personal antithesis. Your unarmed and weapon Strikes against the creature also become magical if they weren't already.
If it has weakness => you get mortal weakness which works against every kobold of the same type in the fight.
If it has no weakness => you get personal antithesis, which works against that specific kobold
GM Watery Soup |
You're welcome to press on without resting, but this fight will mark the official end of the first half of the scenario. There will be no other treasure in the room, and it'd be a natural place to rest up and/or go upstairs to buy stuff.
So far, you've acquired:
Shortsword with emerald in the pommel (sell value: 5 gp), minor healing potion (sell value: 2 gp), everburning torch (sell value: 7.5 gp), roaring lion shield (sell value: 5 gp), cash (20 gp), gold ring (sell value: 5 gp), +1 shortsword (sell value: 17.5 gp), cash (11 gp), cash (7.34 gp), scroll of magic missile (sell value: 2 gp), emerald (sell value: 20 gp).
That's 102.34 gp if you sold everything, 20.46 gp per PC if split evenly.

This is also the place where I hand out Chronicles for the first half, and also as a matter of courtesy, offer an off-ramp for anyone who doesn't wish to continue.
Please give me your PFS information (Character Name, PFS number, faction) if you'd like a Chronicle.
GM Watery Soup |
I was about to say yes and cut and paste the part from the sanctioning that proved me right, but then I was proven wrong.
Players who play through Menace Under Otari, as well as GMs who run the adventure, can apply the adventure’s Chronicle Sheet to any first level Pathfinder Society Organized Play characters. Players and GMs must decide which character to apply credit to when they receive the Chronicle Sheet. Each Chronicle Sheet gives 4 Experience Point(s), 4 Reputation with one faction, and 14 gold pieces. It also grants 8 days of Downtime.
Did everyone else pick a 1st level character?
