It's minutes/level with an incorporeal undead, rounds/level with haunts.
Last sentence:
"The spell's duration changes to concentration (up to 1 round/level) when affecting a haunt."
Yes, but that just means only haunts use rounds/level.
The duration is "1 minute or 1 round/level; see text". It's ambiguous if that means ((1 minute or 1 round) per level) vs ((1 minute) or (1 round/level)). Spells with fixed durations aren't common, but they do exist.

I think you're trying to read a little too deep into it. It's quite explanatory.
Haunts do not receive a saving throw against the spell, but the caster must succeed at a caster level check whose difficulty is equal to at least 10 + the haunt's CR in order to temporarily calm the angry entity. The spell's duration changes to concentration (up to 1 round/level) when affecting a haunt.
Edit: Okay. I see what you mean now. Maybe it is only a 1 minute duration with incorporeal, however, it's 1 round per level with haunts. Haunts do work like traps in a way, so that would make sense. And 1 minute/level does seem like a long time. I'll dig around on the interwebs to see what I can find regarding this spell.

Are we all on the lower level or are we still working our way down when the beetles attack?
It's three apparently-Huge-sized creatures in an open room too small to contain them, with no cover, well within Darkvision range. If nobody managed to see these things before we'd all managed to literally squeeze into the remaining space, I'd assume mind-affecting or illusion magic.
There's enough hints in the hole on the "upstairs" map to see where the hole overlaps - it's the bottom four rows and right three columns. Meaning Green is extremely visible, and the others should be with a bit of repositioning or flight.
EDIT: Have to see what the GM says, of course, but my post assumes someone saw something while at least the back line was still waiting.

Should be no problem to attack them from above with missile weapons, AoE items & spells.

A bunch of things...
I didn't want to trigger 2 combats at once.
I know they can't really fit in the room. The squares are 10' btw.
Yes, you probably did see them before. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt.
If you want me to retcon then I will.
I've been running PbP games here for a while (over 5 years) and I've mostly been "easy going" I want you guys to have a good time but I think with the 3.5e monsters vs Pathfinder characters you guys aren't a "match" for the monsters.
If you have specific things you want for the combats then I'll do it. I try to do the best I can.
Sorry if I seem testy. My dad was in the emergency room then hospital for heart failure over the weekend and I was a bit emotionally drained the last few days.

No, that's quite fine. That was just my reasoning for why we probably weren't all downstairs when combat started. If it unintentionally came across as aggressive, I'm sorry.
10' squares? I'll shrink Granny's token, then. And that fixes the too-small area nicely.
Sorry to hear that. Take the time you need - that's more important than this.

I cleaned up the lower level map a bit & made it bigger along with making the big bugs (15' space) to scale on the map.
Sorry to hear about your dad.
Take some time off if you need, or feel free to post less frequently.

Yes I can relate, my dad just beat prostate cancer, but it was a stressful two months.
Thank you for running this crazy group -- and thanks for letting me tag along.

My general rule is: Unless my character is about to die, whatever the GM says goes.
And I'm sorry to hear about your dad. No problems from this side if you backseat our fun to support your family.

shaventalz |
On a different note...
Do we think there could be swarms further in? Or would it be worth it for Granny to drop some Ball Lightning down there and speed things up? Two hits of 3d6 (reflex half) per turn. I don't know how many arrows everyone's carrying, but if these things have decent AC/HP, just shooting them down could deplete stocks.

![]() |

Good to hear about your dad.
Jory has lots of arrows.
Would love to adventure more with this group, a nice mix of colorful characters!!

![]() |

Thanks for all the ranged attacks & spell support! I was thinking of having Trokkus try to fly back out, but he both sucks at Fly and would provoke two AoOs. And then if he did make it to the top, he wouldn't be able to contribute much. (unless the beetles crawled up the side of the shaft, which might be a possibility if they have a crawl speed)

![]() |

"Don't worry about it. You're not the first boy I've had run off to play with bugs."
Granny casts another look into the hole. "These are a bit bigger than normal, I'll admit."

The Green beetle drops, as Bobby blue and Ringo red are left.
Bobby tries to dodge Granny's spell
[dice=Reflex]1d20+5
He fails!
Ringo also needs to make a save. One of the two balls was directed at him, in an attempt to annoy him into not chewing on the corpse.
...how are these corpses even still here? Are they fresh?

shaventalz |
Kahwen draws back and lets fly at Bobby.
[dice=shortbow]1d20 + 15 [dice=arrow]1d6
He stands for a moment examining the results of his attack then jerks as though something suddenly occurs to him and grabs another arrow.
He knocks, draws in fires it in a smooth motion once he gets going.
"Sorry, Companions! I don't do this very often!"
[dice=shortbow]1d20 + 10 [dice=arrow]1d6
If it's 25' down... couldn't Kahwen just move sideways 10' and get sneak attack on one? Especially since the beetles are pretty big. That'd be within 30', and it's probably better than making a full attack for plink damage.

The bodies look like a few weeks old.

![]() |

The bodies look like a few weeks old.
Hmm. That's definitely newer than the city's destruction. Could be other merchants?
I see four possibilities to explain this:
1) They were sealed in this chamber, died, and the chamber was only very recently opened (like, a matter of hours.)
2) Something has been preventing things from eating the body until recently. Could be magic, could be poison.
3) Something is regenerating the bodies as they're eaten.
4) The author didn't think this through - he wants giant beetles eating the bodies, and so there will be.
Given that this is season 0, my money would be on #4.

@Everyone: In the future, when Klaus uses his Aura of Fury, are you alright taking the -2 to AC for a +2 to hit if within 20' of him?
"Don't hold back on my account, if they happen to get that close to me."

@Klaus: I'm happy with that too (it'll be good if you remind us periodically so I don't forget to factor it in).

Also on the subject of the corpses:
Granny will take 10 on Heal (for 19) to try determining what killed them. Not a great bonus, but it might be enough to at least narrow things down a bit.

It doesn't really say. Are you trying the Andoran faction mission?

Wanted to try narrowing down what happened - whether they died via Song-induced head explosions, or were hunted down and mauled by wildlife, or maybe shot from ambush by the locals.
Definitely want to bury them as correctly as is feasible.

Granny is able to determine the proper Mwangi burial rites for the dead and she thinks that the gods will be pleased by her discovery.I'm assuming you bury the bodies
What were the answers to my questions from this post?

It is Kahwen's turn to be impressed.
"Quite adept, Friend Rallas. I don't think I've ever seen such a creative and effective solution to dealing with pit traps. It seems we all have things to learn on this expedition. I only hope I can demonstrate some knowledge that will help everyone," he says.
"...he just rolled the beetles into the pits, didn't he?"

What CR were the ghosts?
Phooey. Makes sense, given how many there were, but that's not high enough to fulfill the requirements. The Howlers were probably even lower (base monster is 3, so I can't imagine templating them up to triple that.)

The forums started acting up right after I made Granny's post, and didn't come back at all until after the edit window expired.
That's a swift-action roll-twice ability on the 1d20 (guiding spirit trait), but the 1d6 from inspiration doesn't get rerolled.
Final result should be 53 to adjust their attitude.

It was a very good roll on something she was built for. Rallas has the same modifier on Disable Device.
Also, Granny has something to say before we leave the temple. She wants to hold off on saying it until after we build some more good will with the ex-slaves (removing the manacles and stabbing their boss.) However, they really do need warned about the unconscious slaver we have stashed away wherever. They'd probably want to take revenge on him, and that would make reforming him a little difficult.

It would make reforming him ethically a little difficult.
It would make reforming his physical body easier since some of the bones would bend in new and interesting ways.

"As a linguist, your point is well made."
"As a member of the Silver Crusade..." Granny begins waving her cane in EbonFist's face. "No! Bad player!"
