Addendum Traits:
Nirmathi Militia Trainee - She DID train with the bow with the local militia, so I think she may just qualify. She'd pick up Survival as a Class Skill so she can stay outdoor without getting lost or starving :)
Deadeye Bowgirl - Even with Perri gone(and us less heavily skewed towards Melee until her AC comes online), she'll prefer having other Melee between herself and Enemies, meaning Soft Cover will often be a thing. Not having to worry about that would help with the 3/4th BAB progression and a focus on WIS.

Also, remembering the AC from Domain, I'd totally get Handle Animal with Background, too :) So a 50:50 split on midwifery and storytelling, and a full progression for Handle Animal. Just so I can be proper friends with that kitty once I meet it.

Experience: Whatever works best for your GMing.

Hit Points: Half HP guarantee + a roll for the second half might be nice.

Background Skills: Always fun to give a bit of depth to our characters. I'll just have to think about it, because part of Conrad's backstory is that he's pretty inept at... Most things except fighting, really.

2 ranks per level, for 4 in total, is that right?

Favored Class Expansion: Sure, why not!

Traits: I'll have to look them up and pick something that might fit, but yeah, sounds cool! Those homemade traits for Crypt of the Everflame are really nice. Sober, but efficient.

Free Story Feat: Never played with those before, but it's an interesting concept. Roya has already asked a question about prerequisites (you read my mind, Roya!). I also wanted to know how strict we'd be with Goals?

As for all the added mechanics we're discussing, I'd just like to say that I hope it won't make the encounters too easy. Of course, I'm the first one to say that it would pain me if my character died, but there's a bit of a thrill at the same time when the battles have genuinely high stakes (sure, Asar was difficult and we narrowly escaped death a couple of times -but was that satisfying to KO him after so much trouble?! Absolutely). Background Skill is more for flavouring than anything else, but I wouldn't want Story Feat, Favored Class bonuses and Max HPs to unbalance the game if there's stacked on top of each other, if that makes sense.

If it's just a matter of giving us a bit more of a chance because you know some encounters will be difficult, especially if there's only 5 PCs instead of 6, then all's good.

I'm even busier with the final packing with a million things to do and I move this weekend so this is my last post until I get internet up at my soon to be new home. Bot me until I back, hopefully in about a week or so.

My Preferences
Experience: Milestone Leveling
Hit Points: If the DM likes Max HP for everything I have no objections but I also like Half HD for shorter combats
Background Skills: Yes
Favored Class Bonus Expansion: Either way here.
Traits: Yes
Free Story Feat: Yes

Will have to think about what I'd want in leveling, no time for it now.

See ya soon, I hope!

@Conrad: No need really to worry things will be too easy. Max HP, for example, means our opponents also get max HP. It just makes crits or bursts less swingy, and tends to bridge the late-game gap from casters to martials a bit(as caster types typically will need an extra spell or two to deal with opposition, and will run out of the strong oomph faster).

That said, background skills don't add power or resiliency, traits are usually also just a nuance, and the extended favored class bonus also have negligible impact(because you'd choose the best option for you anyway, you basically get the 2 parts as freebie that you did NOT choose.).

The two big things are max HP, but as said that pendulum swings both ways, including our enemies, and the Story Feat, but i've not seem them break games, either - or they would be much more popular choices for some builds :)

So all in all, not worrying about the power level here.

A round-up of votes so far! (Just waiting on Brandark's input.)

Experience: 1 vote for Milestone Leveling and 3 ambivalent
Hit Points: Half + Half Roll has three votes, with two also okay with Max, and one suggestion to default to just Half
Background Skills: A resounding Yes
Favored Class Bonus Expansion: Two yes, one ambivalent, and one concerned about balance
Traits: A resounding yes
Free Story Feat: Two yes, one ambivalent, and one concerned about balance

---

So if you haven't already, start choosing your 4 background skill ranks, your campaign trait, and two other traits. (Unless Brandark has strong opposition.)

We can continue to discuss Experience, HP, FCB, and Story feats, especially once Brandark has weighed in.

---

Good luck with the rest of the move, Joras!

---

Great choices, Roya! It looks like Roya might need to meet a kitty somewhere in her next destination. Can you please link me to the specific animal companion you're likely to choose?

That goes for everyone, by the way. If you have a class feature that you'd like to introduce in roleplay before it comes online, like an animal companion, let me know so that I can help integrate it into the story!

---

Overall, as Roya said, I don't find that these changes unbalance encounters. Her explanations basically read my mind, so I'll refer to her! NPCs (and creatures, where applicable), will get some of these goodies, too, which mostly just lets me say things like, "It's dumb that this NPC doesn't have X skill given their background, so now they do."

Some of the Story feats are stronger than others, but they're mostly for flavor. They can provide extra hooks, raisons d'être, etc. And while I don't like exercising veto, I will raise my eyebrow higher than Spock's if you select something way out of your written background for the apparent purpose of powergaming.

As for Healer's Touch, I think that's a great one to aim for! I'd ask you to keep track of your damage healed versus dealt. For the Achievement Feats, I'd be pretty strict with the prerequisites. I'd be less strict with the Story Feats, though! They're an open conversation!

(And yes, I'd like to roll the expanded FCB out to the other games if I haven't done so already; Runelords and Iron Gods had both been running longer, so I didn't want to upset the apple cart too much. Which I already have. So why not?)

Perseverance (Campaign Trait): A local child recently went missing in the nearby Fang Wood. While others stopped their search when night fell due to bad weather, and tried to convince you to stop, you persevered. You found the child several hours later and brought him home safely. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Will saves.

EDIT: Will Heavy Hitter work? I hadn't noticed it came from Pathfinder Player Companion: Dragon Empires Primer.

Hum, after checking the Survival Traits, I think I joined Conrad on his search - Father Prasst, who is both our mentor, probably didn't want me to get lost out there alone, and figured he'd send us together.

Only that I'll have picked up survival skills from that. or you gain a +1 trait bonus in Survival, and the skill is a class skill for you. .
That frees up the milita training, and I can be curious and alert about the world around me with the ever popular Seeker trait(because honestly, it's a pity to have high Wisdom for Perception but not have it as class skill...)

One question regarding Healers Touch - RAW, it only works on healing spells - (...creatures using healing spells.) - that means other things like Healers Hands...or Channel will be invalid. In some way, it makes sense, since it affects healing spells if fulfilled, but I just wanted to clarify regarding channeled healing(which I opted to make my main form of party-wide healing out of combat.)
It's totally fine if it does not count, but I'd like to know because I'd be more likely to burn spells then to not lose too much progress towards the goal by healing via a different method.
(Or it could theoretically be argued that channeled energy is positive energy granted by the same deity that powers my positive energy healing spells when I spontaneously cast them.)
As said, just looking for clarification because obviously it would change how I handle certain situations.

Regarding the cat...it's complicated :D
I'll send you a PM regarding that, one of these days.
Suffice to say we are not in a hurry - the class feature activates on Level 4, and I do not intend to properly bond until I can pick up Boon Companion on Level 5.
Since we just GOT to Level 2, I don't think we'll need this resolved swiftly :)

Aha, this is why I prefer Archives of Nethys to d20pfsrd. The name of that trait is officially Quain Martial Artist and is much more flavorful:

Quain Martial Artist wrote:
Having grown up in Quain, you were taught under various schools of martial arts, and have used all you have learned to hone your fighting prowess. You gain a +1 trait bonus on damage rolls when using unarmed strikes.

The traits associated with Nirmathas are all much more appropriate for Regional traits (and also give certain hints about what is to come in the story).

Huh...it does say healing spells, but it was also published in the 3.5 days before the massive advancements in state-of-the-art healing technologies. Personally, I'd rather focus on the "target other than yourself" aspect. It begins to feel a little bit like the 2e Life Oracle when you have to provide the healing to others and not to yourself. So perhaps it only advances (and is eventually only maximized) when Roya is not included as a target?

I look forward to hearing about the cat eventually ^_^

Sorry I wasn't on over the weekend.
I was trying out the new game Starfield.

Mental note to check the games every day on my days off.

in answer to the following.

Experience: Medium XP Track or Milestone Leveling

I prefer the medium XP track. Never really got into the milestone levelling.

Hit Points: No change (but enable retraining), Reroll 1s and 2s, Roll 2x and take the higher, Half HD, Half HD +, Max HP

My preference would be the half +1, but I will live with the full HD.

Background Skills: Yes or No

Background skills, Yes, I honestly prefer them so that it fleshes out the characters more. As for the restriction on something for a day job, That is not a restriction that I have an issue with, as I normally do that with at least one of the skills.

Favored Class Bonus Expansion: Yes or No

An emphatic yes.

Traits: Yes or No

Yes, also helps flesh things out.

Free Story Feat: Yes or No

Ambivalent towards that, but will go with majority.

Will get my character leveled today, and updated with the changes, as I Will go with PFS for right now, as it is easier to add to the full hp.

Hum, I am perfectly fine with only counting channels where I exclude myself - note that self-healing would not count, anyway(as it specifically calls out "other" creatures).

Also, I do not expect Channel to ever benefit from the maximization, I just hoped it could contribute to the healing efforts to reach the goal.
Thank you :)

Also, a slight correction: My vote on XP was not "ambivalent", it was "whatever works best for you". It is not that I don't mind how we do it, heck, I like progression and I think all 3 modules only run to Level 8 or 9 or so, I wouldn't mind fast tracking either. But you do the work or keep track or know what kind of effort would be involved and/or how much filler content would be needed or how tedious some repeat encounters could be that are only there to provide XP.
So my vote is not "ambivalent", my vote is exactly what you would prefer on how we do XP. Consider it that way: in the final tally, you also get a vote to throw in as I'm gifting mine to you, seeing how it's a behind-the-screens thing that you are burdened with.

@Joras/Brandark: I think you are jumping the gun. We'd only get a chance at leveling again so swiftly by milestone :D
What GM said was not that we ARE levelling to 3 now, but that we recently leveled to 2 which allowed him to calculate that we are on the medium XP track(2k XP for level 2, 5k xp for level 3) because we are on 2640 XP.(And should have levelled faster on the fast track, and would still be Level 1 on the slow track).

Ah, I misread that. But that still means that I will have to do the FCB, Background, Traits, and Story feat for level 2.

That's correct: whatever we decide re: XP, you're still Level 2. You just get some extra goodies.

(Now if I had used my custom rebuild of Asar with a greatsword instead of a longsword and a slew of other feats and you had still won, you'd be much closer to Lv3, but that would have almost certainly been a TPK and entry into the undead gestalt campaign.)

    Needing More Discussion

  • Experience: 1 vote for Milestone Leveling, 1 for Medium Track, and 3 ambivalent/GM-preference/majority-preference (thank you, Roya)
  • Hit Points: Half + Half Roll has three votes, PFS (Half +1) has two votes, and three also okay with Max
  • Free Story Feat: Two yes, two ambivalent, and one concerned about balance

My Thoughts [ooc](for what they're worth)

  • Experience: The modules do not specify milestones, so it's a gut check on my part that may or may not be appropriate. They were, therefore, designed for the Medium XP track. Since the ambivalents were "whatever is easiest for GM," let's stick with the Medium XP track for now. I'll do my best to keep a running tally of XP gained in the campaign header so that you know what's coming.

  • Hit Points: The Half + Half Roll seems fairly popular overall. Let me go back and see what the previous results were...
  • Roya: HP, roll, con, FCB: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 + 1 = 9
  • Conrad: HP: 1d12 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
  • Miron: HP: 1d6 ⇒ 2
  • Brandark: 8 HP including Con Bonus (I guess you just took half?)
  • Joras: Hit Points-Bard: 1d8 ⇒ 1

Roya and Conrad's rolls were stellar, while Miron and Joras got the short end. I don't know if Brandark ever rolled. So...

  • Miron: Roll 3+1d3
  • Joras: Roll 4+1d4
  • Brandark: Roll 5+1d5
And be amazed at how much better your hit points are!

  • Story Feat: The lean here is yes. It's also absolutely the least crucial and least mechanical. I'm fine with this being an ongoing discussion. I'm having some discussions with Roya and Conrad about their specific interests, so I'm fine letting this one stay in limbo for a while as people have a chance to look over things.

    Story Feat:
Fearless Zeal (Devoted Background): You're willing to lay down your life for your faith.

Benefit: Once per day, you can add a +2 bonus on any single attack roll, caster level check, saving throw, or skill check. You must choose to add this bonus after the die has been rolled and success or failure determined, but before any results (such as damage) are rolled and applied. If you have 10 or more levels or hit dice, this bonus increases to +4.

Goal: Die in pursuit of your faith’s goals and be brought back to life. If you die in circumstances that don’t involve your faith, you gain no benefit. If your GM permits, you can instead remain dead and create a new PC inspired by your heroic sacrifice.

Completion Benefit: If you died and came back, you become a living symbol of faith. Once per day as a standard action, you can inspire those who share your faith to great effort, granting them a +2 morale bonus on attack rolls and saving throws for 1 minute. This is a mind-affecting, language-dependent effect. If you create a new character inspired by your previous character, the new PC receives a +2 bonus to a single ability score. This ability score can’t be one that already has a racial bonus. The new PC can later take this feat if he meets the prerequisite.

    lvl 2: Lore (Shelyn) +1

'Hard to Kill' does quite cut it. Can I take some more time to think about it?

It was in a completely waterlogged room.

Have me managed to ID it ?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

There are several NPCs back in town (Jocyn Elmaran, Holgast, Rantal Prasst, & Moltus Vargidan being the likeliest suspects) who can help to ID any magic items, which we can handwave or play out as you want.

For the most part, I find rolling for magic item identification to be most important when there are time constraints and knowing or not knowing what something does could have an impact on upcoming encounters or a big story beat. So it's still important for someone in the group to have Spellcraft and Appraise, but I'm not going to belabor the point by cluttering things up with rolls that just delay an eventual ID.

So that was a Ring of Swimming.

Are there are any other items that you had yet to ID? Potions, wands, that sort of thing?

His plate mail does not do me any good. If I was playing a warpriest that might be different. :)
The sword, also not my characters wheelhouse. :)

IIRC - The skeleton with the bad attitude that we beat up, was wearing chainmail.
That I am thinking about. :)

    Thank you on the ID.

I'm actually not sure I know much about Miron's background! When you have a chance, could you compile some of that in your alias?

I feel for you, Brandark. I feel like my devices keep on having shorter and shorter lifespans as the years go on. (Peep me a year and a half ago preparing a research article for submission to a journal when my laptop bluescreened and I, idiot that I was, hadn't backed up my work in 3 months.)

    ---

Also, fantastic and consistent RP moment from Roya. OoC, you're absolutely right that the dead Razmiran and the recruitment leaflet are core clues of what to do next. And if no one pieces it together, there's an NPC or two in town who will.

I think it is more the work system don't like the document format. :(

Works on my personal laptop, but I don't have that at home.

Doing College post army release (due to injury) I had a full technical document ready for hand in. 17 pages, fully researched, fully referenced.

Just needed printed and stapled to be handed in, and then when i turned on my laptop, I saw the Magic Smoke coming from my laptop. . .
Fried hard drive, fried power supply.

3 months of work, with 0 Back up.
Now I have 3 backups for my main. :)

So this is a game related question.

Should I go 2 weapon fighting, or should I go archery, and end up becoming a switch hitter ??

I don't need numbers or things like that, just a suggestions.

Missed the part where Kassen only gave us a few items! I corrected it on the sheet.

All this talk about computers remind me of when I lost my laptop during my first year of master's thesis... The battery died without any warning sign. Managed to save up all my work on a USB key in the nick of time, but it was one hell of a big scare!

Bought a new computer, only to kill it a year later by dropping water over it :') About a week's work gone -and in research, that was a lot.

Brandark: Roya already specializes in archery, and Conrad finds himself alone to do all the tanking. If Perri isn't replaced, we might need another melee character.

Alright, so I will go switch hitter, and go with 2WF.

I think getting a shot off, then swinging in to TWF would work for me.

    ~25*2 = 50

    total 160

    so 160-50 = 110.

I think I am currently at around 110 points of healing surplus, for the Healers Touch Achievement Feat.

Also, I am either a really great healer, or a miserable archer :D
(That said, the close quarters indoor with people blocking plus my strenght penalty did not really lend themselves to using the bow much.)

I tallied up to the best of my knowledge, but I may be off slightly in either direction. Just wanted to have a baseline.

It's been a while since I've played a 1E ranger (that I built, instead of a prefab NPC), but I loved building switch-hitters. I think the last one I built had quick draw to just keep engaging at range until he got up in someone's face, usually by throwing instead of using a bow. It wasn't necessarily the most effective, but it was lots of fun.

    Roya's initial tally looks great!

    ---

Miron and I have been chatting about another possible change (to crossbows), but I want to make sure we're settled on the current stats before introducing another possible house rule.

    HP: 19/19 | AC: 12 / T: 12 / FF: 10 | Channel 5/8 1d6| Fort: +4, Ref: +2, Will: +6 | CMB: -1, CMD: 11 | Init: +2(+2 if acting in surprise round), Perception: +10

Most fun switchhitter I had was a Fighter specialized in Two-Weapon-Fighting with Throwing Axes, unfortunately in a low-magic Campaign(so no Blinkback Belt or something).
But he'd usually get an opening Volley of Axes out, then turn into a melee blender, while throwing some more axes at targets of opportunity before drawing more and resuming blending.
Also meant there was always a full attack happening, even if the target in front of me went down early.
At least until I ran out of Axes :)

(and with Fighter Weapon Training and Feats Galore, they were surprisingly effective)

Also, I'll use that baseline then and progress from there, ty.

    Changing my Combat trait to:

Weapon of Peace: Even though you are a trained combatant, proficient with any number of weapons, you don’t relish killing your enemies. It’s not that you’re afraid of seeing blood, but rather that disabling a foe is superior to killing someone capable of admitting defeat. When using a melee weapon that deals lethal damage to instead deal nonlethal damage, you take only a –2 penalty instead of –4.

I love that trait! It also feels very appropriate for a burgeoning Shelynite.

Alternatively, people at home MAY be worried with the preparation group having been missing for quite some time now. I mean, if there is danger on the way there that cause them to not return, that would mean the kids they sent out to become adults are in danger, too.

So they could have sent somebody to look, or find out what's going on - we might run into a group either way, even without someone running ahead to inform them-

An astute point, and one that Dimira is probably thinking about, too.

Looks like I will be having to update by hand.

My program is being right stubborn after its last update, which broke it.

So Saturday, when I have time at work, I will get it updated by hand, using the books.

    Extra Paperwork, Yay <---- NOT

I have some templates (in both Excel & Word) that can help facilitate stuff for when we implement house rules not easily found/tweakable in stuff like Pathbuilder or HeroForge. If that would be helpful, send me a DM and I can share a Google Drive link with you.

I use YAPCG, but the macros keep breaking on my work computer.

Ok, so I worked through everything on my work computer, but by hand.

    Ranger Level 2

    HP +13
    Roll 5+5+2+1

    Fort +1
    Ref +1
    Will +0

    BAB +1

Skills - All except Craft Arms and Armour +1
Craft Boyer / Fletcher - +6 (Class, 1 point, Int)

    Feat - 2 Weapon Fighting

Fighting 2WF with Urgosh or other medium / Light weapon combo's.
    Main Hand -2 / -2 for modifiers.

I hope that covers everything needed.
If not, GM can inquire, and I will see if I can figure it out.

Finally back up after much bustle and bother, in the new place. I'm now in the Easter time zone of the U.S.

I admit to being a bit overwhelmed by all that has happened but nice to see the end of adventure 1. Will post shortly in gameplay updated what (little) Joras did. Expect to take a day or so to do the upgrades to my character.
