Star Trek: Celatum

Game Master Lapyd

The year is 2369. The fresh Miranda-class science vessel USS Inopia is assigned to its first archaeology exploratory mission in the Yinaya-7 alien colony at the Beta quadrant in Federation controlled space. The Inopia is comandeered by Captain Jay Pasteur, a middle-aged officer whose entire career happened behind a desk until some months ago when he received the letter assigning him to the new ship. The entire new bridge officers, crew and passengers of the ship - totaling around 450 people - don't very much look forward to their 5-year mission, especially considering Jay's fame for being slow, indecisive, bureaucratic and risk averse. But nothing is truly risk free in this galaxy, is it?

Pre-Read:

Below is a summary of everything written on the pads; assume hundreds of pages of reports with numbers and graphics. If you have questions, feel free to ask by the discussion board and if it's something that the reports would bring, I will answer there.

Yinaya-7 It's a class-K planet and the seventh celestial body on the Yinaya star system, not in terms of distance to the star, but in terms of size. There are nineteen celestial bodies in the system, but only Yinaya-4, Yinaya-5 and Yinaya-7 are inhabitable. Yinaya is a very irregular star with roughly oval shape and composed of different materials that generate different gravitational fields - making the orbit of the celestial bodies constantly shift. At any given time, only two of the three inhabitable planets actually have acceptable temperatures due to the distance to the star, so roughly every couple hundred years the population of the planet that will become uninhabitable somehow migrates to the other planets. Yinaya-7 is about a decade from going through such process, as Yinaya-4 is slowly becoming inhabitable again. These planets have no satellites, and their temperatures are high, varying from 130 to 160 Fahrenheit. The vast majority of the Yinaya planets is covered by oceans with very acidic pH water, and rains are constant. The entire surface - bottom of the ocean and islands - is crystallized with several micro sharp-edges. For most aliens, the only way to survive in the Yinaya planets is by using special suits that protect against the heat and acid, filters the air, and is hard enough to deal with the sharp crystals. The Yinaya system is in the border of the Romulan space, but it's considered "Fleet" space.

Yinayans There are several species of plants and animals, but the intelligent species on the system planets is called the Yinayans. They resemble very thin and tall humanoid with ophidian features and no hair. Not much is known about them, but their bones seem to be flexible and malleable, they have impressive regeneration skills, are amphibious and their bodies are fully adapted to their environment. While they don't actually have warp technology, they don't do by choice; they already proved to be very advanced technologically, beyond the majority of the Fleet's planets, to the point that they basically contacted the Fleet to be asked to be left alone and without interference. Their entire technology seems to be an absurdly advanced understanding of biology, including things like cloning and "bioteleportation". They aren't aggressive at all, preferring to stay neutral to galactic conflicts - the absence of rich minerals or materials on their system makes it easy to do so. They agreed to allow the Fleet to send an archaeological expedition to study their crystal formations and society, in exchange for similar material being provided about the class-M planets of the Fleet.

Rumors Things that truly interest the Fleet about Yinaya is the belief that their people are completely connected to a strange sort of hive mind; the Yinayans even argue that the star itself is part of the hive mind. There had been too few interactions to prove if it's real or just a pure religious interpretation. All the biotechnology of the Yinayans also seems to be way beyond the understanding of the Fleet scientists; they seem to work only with natural elements, and don't have metals on their environment. Some scientists proposed that the Yinayans may be truly "magical", in the sense of owning technology and materials beyond understanding that could only be interpreted as such.

Yinayan Linguistics:

The linguists of the Federation weren't able to fully translate the language yet. It's a pleasant sounding, non-nasal language, and the tone you pronounce words may change their meaning completely. It doesn't seem to have relation with any other known language. Gestures aren't common at all. The few Yinayans the Fleet met appeared to have difficulties speaking their own language, as they argue they can telepatically communicate with each other (although they haven't shown the same capability when communicating with other species). The Fleet seems to have enough data for the most basic words, like greeting someone, thanking, or asking to be excused. Any kind of progress in translation or linguistics techniques will likely be received very well.

Yinayan Behavior and Mannerisms:

Yinayans are reserved people. They move slow and don't gesture. They dress usually in very long robes with dull colors like grey or beige, and don't seem to use jewelry or tattoos. Their apparent "conjoined" minds create some fascinating effects - they all seem to react the same way, at the same time, when surprised or happy with something. When interacting between themselves, they mostly just stay grouped silently, barely moving any muscles. When interacting with other species, they alternate freely who's speaking, trying to usually give priority to the Yinayan that is closer to the audience.

Yinayans Medical:

There is very few details about the Yinayan physiology. They're apparently reptilian, being very tall and lean humanoids with ophidian features. They're amphibious, and have flexible bones that the Federation scientists estimate make them great swimmers and capable of squeezing through small spaces like snakes. They have light white scales through their bodies, but it's unknown how resistant they are. The Federation never had access to a hurt, diseased, or deceased member of the species, but the Yinayans themselves revealed to have highly developed regeneration capabilities. Despite the very high temperatures and acidic nature of their environment, their bodies seem fully adapted, and have not shown signs of discomfort while in other Federation controlled environments (the few ships they have been onboard). The Star Fleet would consider an incredible accomplishment to learn more about them.

The Captain stays up, and signs with his hand to Antas.

Please announce the departure, mister Di Santos. - he's brief, then gives a step ahead as Antas follow up.

Lieutenant... - he calls to Cavallera - ... Take us out to the first plotted point on the chart.

A multitude of actions start happening throughout the bridge, as different officers start announcing the ship detaching, engines engaged, all decks set. Finally, the helmsman on the controls make the Inopia move, almost as smoothly as a gentle wave, in a circular motion away from the station - and then pointing away from Jupiter.

The Exchange

Male Human Lt Commander, Chief Engineer

Antas gives the command to all departments and has communications request departure from Starbase. As the ship departs Starbase Antas steps to the engineering station and hits the exterior lights in ancient Earth signal of departure to Starbase using the lights as the signal which he knows the base watchers will appreciate.

Departure signaled, Sir

As the ship engages Antas hears the impulse engines go to quarter impulse to bring her out per regulation and calls out

quarter impulse and as the ship moves out past the first defense perimeter Antas says calmly: full impulse ready to the warp point at your command Sir

Lieutenant Htun Khaing Mg Zeyar (Communications)

Zeyar continues to doomscroll furiously on his pad, though he looks up briefly in response to the Inopia detaching. Before the ship has even departed, all of his staff have received at least a dozen communications with mountains of reports to review before tomorrow's meeting.

Male Human Lt. Security/Tactical

McCoy smiles. It's one thing to be shuttled around as a passenger from a starbase to a waiting ship in dock, but to be at the bridge of a ship, even if you're not the one piloting, stirs the imagination. It reminds you of how the early cosmonauts/astronauts must have felt when they readied to launch. Eager to plunge into the star pocked black and see what was out there

Do it. - says Jay, closing his eyes as the ship jumps to warp. The sensation is strange to all; despite the extreme speed of the vessel, there's no whiplash or inertia felt inside of it. The technology has long advanced beyond it.

The captain finally takes his chair, crossing both hands under his chin, thoughtful. All ceremonies completed, the officers are now free to go for their business, work and studies. The next meeting with the commander is only at night, and he seems particularly entertained reading reports in his pad. The next stop is in about a couple days to get supplies and some extra personnel at another space station on their way to the Yinayan system.

You're all free to move around, go for lunch, interact with the other NPCs, go play in the holodeck, interact with each other, meet your subordinates - whatever you want until the night! Assume it's completely uneventful until then.

The Exchange

Male Human Lt Commander, Chief Engineer

Antas moves to the Doctor and says Doctor, the captain would like a console set up on the bridge for you. I haven't seen too many bridge consoles for medical so I am going to give that a once over, but is there anything in particular you might like to have?

Male Human Lt. Security/Tactical

Lt. McCoy has a couple of things to do, first among them, track down the Ensign who trained in the holodeck and see how she is doing. He also needs to find out who is the counselor. Something feels very off to him and he's not sure what it is.

Lieutenant Htun Khaing Mg Zeyar (Communications)

Zeyar concludes his business and heads off to the holodeck

I'm getting ready for clinical (I'm in nursing school); I'll post some more about Zeyar's bizarre fantasies tomorrow :)

@Finn: Are you still with us? We need to pick the pace - at least one post everyday during the week, ideally even some during the weekend. If you can't make it, please let me know and I'll try to dig a replacement.

Antas:

The doctor gets his subordinates to send complete specs of what's needed on the station.

Please feel free to either proceed to work on this station, or proceed to anything else! Hopefully Finn will appear again at some point, but don't wait for him.

McCoy:

The lieutenant has no difficulties finding her. Once Cavallera was confirmed back on duty, she received a note asking her to resume her duties in the ship, so she's now towards the cafeteria walking around in pair with another ensign. They're assigned as guards there, but are simply talking in a low tone as the place seems mostly empty.

Do you want to chat with her, and to go search for the counselor?

Zeyar:

It doesn't take long for Zeyar to find the holodecks, one of each being free at the moment. He quickly reserves it inpromptu, and is now ready to proceed.

Male Human Lt. Security/Tactical

McCoy's convo:
He adresses her by her rank and name in greeting, then adds "A moment of your time, please?"

Chating with her

The Exchange

Male Human Lt Commander, Chief Engineer

Antas will get to work and call down to engineering to send up a couple of the damage control engineers to work on the bridge with him. He will create a medical station on the bridge tied to communications and engineering as well as damage control linked to the sick bay.

McCoy:

Sure thing, sir... - she says, stepping away from the other ensign - How may I be of help?

Her tag says "Sarin" - as in, Ensign Sarin. She doesn't seem nervous, or agitated; just curious as to what Joe wants.

Antas:

Antas and the other engineers take a very good part of the day to set up the station with everything requested, and by the time they complete, the lieutenant commander is starving. A nurse helps them test the consoles, and they seem to be working beautifully.

The Exchange

Male Human Lt Commander, Chief Engineer

Antas goes to his room for a bit and gets a break and eats a good healthy meal filling that ravenous hunger and then takes a quick 15 minute nap before getting up and doing some stretches and returning back to work to check on the engineer crew and how they are doing on his tasks.

Male Human Lt. Security/Tactical

With Ensign Sarin:
"Ensign Sarin, I was told by the Lt. Brollo he directed you to the Bridge with the absence of our.. usual helmsman. And there you were sent to the holodeck to familiarize yourself with the helm control of the bridge. First, thank you for your willingness to adapt. Second, do you feel more confident now should the need arise again?"

A bit of a smile "And I apologize if this seems abrupt. I'm trying to stream line any future situations like this for the good of everyone."

Antas:

With the engineering fairly spread everywhere across the ship, it's not hard for Antas to run into someone from his crew as he walks through the ship. Things seem to be running smooth, this first day, and D'Tara may be really keeping everybody on her toes on the engine room.

McCoy:

Oh, sure, sir. Yes, the lieutenant asked me to be ready for the helm, but no need for adaptation... I expect from time to time to be on the console, as I am currently assigned as the backup in case lieutenant Cavallera needs. We worked together a little bit on the controls a couple days ago, so I'm somewhat familiar with them... But the idea to do a quick review on the holodeck was good. - she says, adjusting her hair behind her left ear with a smile.

Male Human Lt. Security/Tactical

McCoy's conversation:
Once again, McCoy is struck by the oddity that every woman on this ship seems to have a crush on Cavallera. No one is liked by everyone. Something is... yes, off.

"Just in case he has another.. incident, I'd like you to keep up private training on the controls. I'll arrange an hour of your regular shift be reserved for it. I've delayed your shift here enough so I'll just let you know I try to keep an open door policy if any of the security staff has questions or concerns."

And unless she does have any more, he heads to the Counselor's office.

The Exchange

Male Human Lt Commander, Chief Engineer

engineering:
Antas will take time to observe all the various engineer assignments before making his way to the shuttle bay to see how 5he addition of the transporters is going making sure to complimen any particularly good work by his crew as he goes or to make suggestions if it looks like they could use a hand
