Arity throws a clever remark, leaving the woman stoned in surprise Bon Mot success! Then she raises buckler and moves in
Flory raises shield of her own, moves closer and tries to frighten the creature. But even despite her being thrown away by Arity, she does not see Flory threatening. Intimidation failure
Mary moves in, grabs her rapier and strikes twice. She hits once, and it feels like stabbing a stone. Hit -6 due to resistance

Albrecht recognizes the creature as Gargoyle, they have resistance to physical damage, except specific types of metal (adamantine), they posses no weaknesses.
Gargoyles are monstrous hunters made of elemental stone. They use their resemblance to decorative statues to hide in plain sight in cities during the day and descend upon unlucky pedestrians at night. Their most common form is that of a horned humanoid with bat-like wings, but individual gargoyles show a great deal of variation, with some appearing more or less humanoid and others resembling no known creature. A gargoyle’s features are not flxed; city-dwelling gargoyles who remain in the same locale long enough slowly morph, day by day, to match the style of the local architecture. These patient monsters can stay disguised for long stretches of time as they patiently await an opportunity to strike.

The stone lady has resistance 5 to Piercing and probably Slashing as well. Bludgeoning? Maybe, maybe not. Regardless, it's going to take Mary a long time to take her down even if she crits every attack. Given the +13 to hit and 2d8+3 damage, Mary will go down long before that happens. Mylos may have to do the heavy work of generating damage on her with spells, or Bonnie with her fire damage.
Mary takes advantage of Arity's flanking to take one last jab at the stone lady before scurrying over to take on one of the oozes.

You concentrate your effort on Gargoyle, Mary fails to feint but lands a solid blow. Bonnie lands a hit as well, her fire dealing the full amount of damage, surprisingly Albrecht's word struck Gargoyle with great strength, and then his arrow crushes the remains of her body. Flory claw missed the target, but the Gargoyle was already dying.
Combat is over. But you don't know if you have time to heal. You can try and see what will happen.
You found a rusted box in the fountain, it contains a brittle piece of parchment that names the bearer as the owner of "Maunder Castle, Maunder Bridge, and all appurtenances thereto."
The box also has a silver signet ring with a large ruby worth 75 gp; the ring’s band is inscribed with the words "Lord Maunder." The fountain contains a single metal climbing bolt that’s been underneath—and unharmed by—the sewer ooze for many years.
The door leading inside the castle is closed.
How would you proceed, head right in? Heal with potions and spells? Leave the castle to heal through threat wounds?
Marysiel |
Loot sheet updated.
Mary looks at the signet ring with a trained eye and nods in approval. "This is worth some serious gold." She tucks it into a pocket with the rest of the party loot. Her eyes light up when she reads the parchment. "Well, looky here! Seems we're now the proud owners of this castle and the bridge, and a good chunk of the land around here." She gives the building an appraising look and frowns. "Not in great shape, is it? We may not want to give up our lodgings at the fishing camp just yet." She glances at the climbing bolt, shrugs and adds it to the party loot.
She then examines the group for wounds. "I think we should take the time to heal up before we go in. How about we head outside for a moment to let me and Albrecht patch us up before we hit the castle? I'm in no hurry to face whatever's inside."
Flory Buntzer |
Loot sheet updated.
[/b] She gives the building an appraising look and frowns. "Not in great shape, is it? We may not want to give up our lodgings at the fishing camp just yet."
”A diamond in the rough”, says Flory. ”Who knows what we’ll find below the surface?”
Bonnie Anne |
Bonnie has two minor healing potions from character creation, which are probably too weak to be of any use in combat now. Since she's only down a little bit (two MHP will get her close to full), she'll suggest that we heal right in the courtyard - she'll keep watch on the door.
Minor Healing Potion: 1d8 ⇒ 8
Minor Healing Potion: 1d8 ⇒ 3
Marysiel |
Even with Bonnie gulping down her potions, we have Mary down 19 HP, Arity down 13 HP, and Flory down 7 HP for a total of 39 HP. Mary has already done Battle Medicine on Arity, Mary, and Mylos today, so she can't help there. It is unlikely that we're going to recover 39 HP using just Albrecht's Battle Medicine, a couple of Heal spells, and whatever potions we have on us. If we want to go into the coming fight at full strength then we will probably need to take the time to Treat Wounds.
Mary palms her minor Elixir of Life and looks at it doubtfully. "I don't think this is going to do it."
Arity Bell |
Arty winces at the slice she has received.
"Hmmm, I don't think it would be wise to try and get these tended to before proceeding. Who knows what monsters they have in there, given they had a GARGOYLE as an outdoor guard. This is quickly getting out of hand."
Bonnie Anne |
Sorry, to be clear - Bonnie is willing to guard the door while others are doing Treat Wounds. She didn't use Focus, so she'd be sitting around most of the time. This would allow us to heal to full while still maintaining vigilance against something that could otherwise come out and surprise us mid-bandaging.
Albrecht Jaeger |
Albrecht looks over the carnage before turning his attention to the keep.
"Hmm... The rest of the building is rather small. I doubt we'll have time to properly treat our wounds before someone emerges and assaults us. Even worse, the remainder of the leadbuster lads might be able to escape through a window or other egress.
Perhaps Mylos could provide us with a burst of healing while I provide some emergency first aid on the most injured. Then we could invade the keep immediately."
He shakes his head sadly. "Unfortunately I have not prepared any healing elixirs for today. I apologize for my lack of foresight. I do have a couple of improved drakeheart mutagens however."
A 2d8 AoE heal from Mylos would heal 9-10 on average then Albrecht could battle medicine for 2d8+3. That should come close to topping everyone off unless RNG does us wrong. The Moderate, drakeheart mutagen will provide 7 AC (5+2dex) vs the 5 (1+4) that we currently have. Perhaps Arity and Mary could use those.
Bonnie Anne |
I think Treat Wounds is better, heals and Battle Medicines are really good in combat. If we're concerned about being too close, we could go back outside the castle, and Bonnie can pull the gate down behind us. It potentially locks us out of the castle, but Bonnie can always Dimensional Assault back in.

Although this tall tower has supports for what must have been two interior floors, it has since become a drafty and dark open space that stretches twenty feet up to the roof above. The wall has only a few narrow windows that remain closed with thick wooden shutters. A set of stone stairs leads partway up one wall to a broken platform that has three unfurled bedrolls, and the main open area of the keep seems tidied up. One side features a long stone table with an array of equipment and two human corpses. The other side has a pentagram carved into the floor. Stubby candles stand at each of the pentagram’s points, and the stone floor in the middle appears blackened as though from great heat.
Next to a table there is a dwarf. He has dark, curly hair and a long beard adorned with skullshaped beard clasps.
