Zaeta moves forward, following the sound of gunfire. Once she spots creatures in the air though she will veer off a straight course and try to find a good place for sniping, where she has a view of the whole situation, hopefully with some cover, like a good tree.

Always add your ability score. If I call for, say, a Survival roll, that's pretty much always going to use INT unless I call for something else.

Cor and Zaeta guide the team towards the crash site. You can see smoke and fire about forty meters away through the dense undergrowth. Just then, a sudden noise draws your attention. A dozen flying predators have erupted from the trees above and are swooping down to attack you!

These flyers are about 75 centimeters long with a wingspan of nearly two meters. Their wings are covered in a reddish-brown leathery membrane with ragged "hair" of the same leathery material on their bodies. They are unpleasant-looking creatures with long talons and curved beaks.

(Note that I have a subdermal armor augment (+3) as well as my regular cloth armor, just in case that makes a difference as the things try to maul me.)

The Traveller can pass orders, commands and suggestions to comrades fighting on the same side. To do this, the Traveller makes a Leadership check. The Effect of this check is the number of Boons the Traveller can give to any skill checks (including attack rolls) to other Travellers on the same side. Crastor's shot strikes and fries one of the bird-things, but his power-pack chooses that moment to enter a reset cycle! It won't fire again for several seconds!

On a "7", you achieve your goal but at some cost. In this instance, that cost is that Crastor's laser pistol won't fire next round.

"What are these things!" Crastor calls out as the creatures seemly ignored the strange blasts of energy wiping out their brethren. He fires again up at them.

Yeah, have discord, but not sure when it would make sense to remind you. The DM is already telling everyone when it is our turn, so not sure if you aren't getting the notifications on your campaign tab or what.


Cor, Freyjason and Zaeta blast the flock of flyers, hitting several individuals, but the rest seem manically undeterred. They stoop down on the group and attack with their razor sharp beaks and talons, then fly off again.

Trying to get another one of the rabid bird things:

Darn, missed.

Zaeta, wanting to end the threat, grabbed her gun again as they were flying away, but her haste made the shot go wild, and she was unable to bring another one down.

Zaeta then sets out in the direction they heard the fighting previously, hoping to find the missing crew, and hoping they had come in time to save them... or at least some of them.

Cor does his best to defend against the flying creatures, dodging their attacks or relying on his armor for protection. Finally, they break off the attack and the scout fires a parting shot. He realizes that Crastor was wounded in the skirmish and looks to Frey. "Can you patch him up quick? Follow when you can!" Then he hustles after Zeta, whose lithe form is already disappearing among the trees.

As you ease carefully through the dense jungle, you see ahead the smoking ruin of Alpha Raft. It will clearly never fly again and there is a body laying in the clearing to its left. Smoke curls out of the shattered wind shield. The flyers are swooping down towards it and flying away again over and over. They appear not to have spotted you yet.

Zaeta, give me an INT+Animals roll, please!

The flying creatures are acting like birds protecting a nest. Otherwise, they would have flown away when threatened and killed.

Strange, the birds are acting like they are protecting a nest. I wonder if the crew ran into something that they are protective of. Let's be careful approaching. They won't be driven away from their young easily.

Zaeta won't get into melee range again if she doesn't have to... she'll just approach to a good long-range shooting distance (gun has a range of 250 meters), letting the others go ahead. She keeps her comms on so that the others can report back about what they see at a closer range, but she is going to cover them with her rifle, and try to keep the birds away so the team can investigate/rescue.

Crastor leans against a tree and watches the birds, "I wonder if the crew had something...food or perfume maybe, that is drawing the birds in."

Since everyone else is just stopping, Zaeta sighs and changes her tactics.

Instead of staying here and shooting birds to keep them away from the rescuers, she puts her rifle away and draws her sword, and starts running in to be a rescuer herself.


Zaeta sprints across the clearing. As she nears the ruin of Alpha Raft, she can hear the flapping of leathery wings, but they veer off when she enters the craft, aided by a few of her crew's pot shots.

Inside, she finds the four missing crew. One, evidently dead, is laying in the back of the raft under a blanket. Two more are badly injured and wear bandages. One appears to have lost an eye to a flyer attack. Fourth crew member is the Chief Drive Engineer, Audhild Grondahl. She's dirty and stained with blood, but appears to be hale. She is holding a safety axe.

Grondahl looks relieved at the sight of Zaeta entering the raft. "Watch out," she warns. "Sometimes they try to get in. What the hell are those things? Never mind. Sorenson and Grunlund are both injured. Svensson is dead. Do you have a way to get us out, Ma'am?"

Cor sees Zaeta reach the aircraft, his rifle still aimed at any of the flying things that might try to breach the craft. Since nobody answered the earlier hail, he calls her on the comm unit. Zaeta, report. Any survivors?"

When he hears they need a medic, Cor will send Freyjason to join Zaeta in treating the survivors while he and Crastor cover with their rifles. When they are ready to make a break from the ship, the two of them will provide cover fire for them to reach their position.

Was planning to wait only a bit to see if his hail reached anyone before running to the ship, I wasn't really intending to stand around. But I can go with this situation and figure he's covering Zaeta's approach. GM, can we get our ship in closer to this position?

We drove away the main body of the flyers, but they seem to be protective of this area. They might have young here. Not sure, but we definitely have to get you away from here. Counting the one that you can see outside the raft, looks like three alive, two dead. Send someone else in to help if you can. There are injured.

As she is helping people get ready to move, and checking the body to see if she can bring it along, she asks Grondahl

Yes, now that you know where it is, you can force a landing through the canopy about 150 meters southeast of the crash site where the forest opens up a bit. It might make for some interesting flying, but your ship can take it. You’ll still have to find a way to transport the dead and injured 150 meters through the dense foliage.

”No, Ma’am,” she says. ”We were surveying the area, flying sort of low, and they just came up and attacked! Maybe they were protecting the area, but we didn’t have a chance to maneuver. They were on us before we knew it. The sensors didn’t detect them until they cleared the canopy and then it was too late.”

Frey looks the man in the eyes, and smiles a smile that is at least 30 years older than he looks

When that's done though, I need to be honest, I want reconstructive surgery for you. Learning of the injuries, especially to that of Crewman Gronlund as well as the bodies that will have to be recovered, Cor leans in to speak with Crastor. "Cover them. I'm headed back to get the ship in a bit closer. Think there's a decent landing spot only 150 meters away. Still a bit of terrain to cover, but not nearly as much as we've traveled to get here."

He calls in to Frey and Zaeta to let them know as well, then races back to the shuttle, firing up its engines when he gets there to try and make the landing site he'd seen. Hopefully it'll be close enough to get the injured crewmen aboard safely, as well as the bodies.

After a hair-raising landing in the tight spot, he calls in to the others. "All ready here, get those wounded soldiers to the ship and bring the fallen as well. The shuttle is now a hundred fifty meters to the southeast of the crash site, where the forest opens up a bit. Crastor and I will give cover fire from those birds!" He moves up closer to the wreckage site, but not beyond view of the shuttle.

That was close! Let's get those crewmen aboard! So one dead, two badly wounded and another two with injuries that won't impede their movement? How about the two strongest carry the body between them, two more help the badly wounded move out quickly (unless only Gronlund needs help moving), while the rest provide cover fire against those birds if/when they attack. Cor can also provide cover fire from the shuttle using his rifle as they get closer and Crastor can do the same from closer in where he's currently stationed as the crew emerges from the wreckage. Any other thoughts or ideas?
